Plays were often held in the rural communities as fund raisers.
I remember attending some at the Grange in Elk Run (Sullivan Township)
when I was a child. They were always slapstick comedies and the audience
loved them. The humor was enhanced by the audience's personal knowledge
of and friendships with the actors.
