Good Morning Members,
Our 4th Annual EMGS Reunion was help July 20, 2002 at the home of our Vice President Mikell Haskins in Coudersport, PA. I must say it was a huge success, Alice & Mikell are to be commended for putting this together.
Mikell greeted us all with fresh coffee and doughnuts at her beautiful home. Its such a warn & relaxing place with the wonderful sound of the trickling creek in the background.
Mikell opened the meeting with a prayer.
The first speaker was Ron Ebbert from The E.O Austin Home/Historical Society. He begin by showing us the movie of the Austin Dam that broke in Sept. of 1911. It included scenes of many other catastrophes Austin suffered over the years. The E.O Austin Home/Historical Society is very new and are operating on a shoe string, so to speak. At only $5 a year for membership, I urge anyone with any ties to Austin Borough to get in touch with Ron Ebbert and show your support of this newly formed Society. The address is Austin Home/Historical Society PO Box 412 Austin, PA 16720. Tell him your from EMGS . If anyone wants to buy the Austin Dam Film, Ron Ebbert can tell you where to get it.
Our next speaker was Kurt M. Pfaff Director of the Eldred WW II Museum. The Museum was started to preserve personal memories of WW II Veterans who are dying at an alarming rate. He borough with him some of the Munitions Produced in the Munitions Eldred plant. I never thought I would hold a hand grenade or Trench mortar shells much less a thermite aerial bomb but I did the day of the reunion.
Kurt told us some of the personal stories he has heard from the Veterans he has met over his years as Director. You can not help to get teary eyes listening to the true accounts of these War Veterans. I have never been to Eldred War Museum, but I will be taking hubby there soon. The Eldred War Museum has a website and it is http://www.eldredwwiimuseum.org/ the e-mail address is info@eldredwwiimuseum.org the address is Eldred War Museum 201 Main Street Box 273 Eldred, PA 16731
Lunch was then served.
After Lunch the speaker was speaker Robert Currin Curator of Potter County Historical Society. He spoke on many things of interest in Potter Co. and invited all of us on a tour of the new Potter County Historical Building. Bob Currin to me is like E.F. Hutton, only better. When Bob speaks, everyone listens. He is a terrific person and if you want to know anything about Potter County he's your man. At last year's reunion I had a guy come up and told me that Bob Currin was his teacher in school and he came to the reunion just to hear Bob speak. I know just what he means.
The Potter County Historical Society President is Leon B. Reed Sr. I don't have an address for him, but the Genealogist at Potter Co. is Kay Brownell Reed and he can be reached thru her at gazelle@pennswoods.net or pottercohist@adelphia.net.
As things stand now our reunion next year will be held in Potter County again. I think it is going to be in Ulysses at Leon & Kay Brownell Reed's home. It should be the same time, 3rd week of July. Will let you know more on that later.
In closing I want to thank Mikell & Paul for having us at their home. They are terrific Hosts, although I didn't see much of Paul.
Also, would any of you members like to take the job as Newsletter and Publicity Editor. We need one badly. Please someone write to me and volunteer for this job. It would make me so happy.
Have a great week,
Mary E Bryant Pres.

McDonalds and Sweeneys: Descendants of Well-Known Pennsylvania Emigrant Family Announce Reunion
Dushore, PA 12/21/99. Representatives of one of the largest and
most widespread Irish emigrant families in northern and central Pennsylvania,
the McDonalds and Sweeneys, announced plans today for their First
Annual Reunion in July 2000. The family is composed of related
descendants of Peter and Catherine (Waters) McDonald, John and Catherine
(Burns) McDonald and Michael and Catherine (Sweeney) Sweeney. Other
families related by marriage include still different McDonald lines, Farrell,
Jordan, Wright, O'Donnell, Travis, Karge, Barth, Kelly and
more.
These families of canal-workers, farmers and tradesmen originally settled
in Sullivan County in the early and middle nineteenth century. They cleared
the great forests, built farms and raised large families that entered the
professions and trades common to that era. As time passed, the children
and grandchildren migrated to Elks, McKean, Jefferson, Indiana and other
counties in central and northern Pennsylvania. Today, their descendants
are spread from California to Tennessee and New York State to Florida.
All are drawn emotionally and by history to the small towns that dotted
Sullivan County a century ago: Cherry, Cherry Mills, Dushore, LaPorte,
Ringdale, Bernice, Mildred. The weathered gravestones at St. Basil' the
Great church in Dushore, St.
Francis Xavier of Overton, St. Francis of Mildred, and St. John Lutheran
of Wilmot bear the names of these ancestors and their fellow pioneers of
Sullivan County.
The McDonald-Sweeney Y 2,000 Family Reunion will be held at the Fairgrounds
in Forksville, PA from Friday evening, July 28 through noon on Sunday,
July 30. A full course of events, meals and tours of the old homesteads
is planned. Further information can be obtained from Ray and
