I'm writing to you with the HIGH hopes that you may be able to be of some assistance to me. Over this past weekend my husband and I attended an estate auction on Route 6 just West of Mansfield, it was the Baker Estate Auction. While there I purchased a very large, very ornate, and very old Bible. After getting it home and looking through it did I realize that it had a decent amount of older family history in it. I firmly believe that there might be a family out there that this bible belongs to and I'm now on a mission to try and locate them and return it to them. Most of the family information recorded in this bible appear to be from the Potter county area. I will list below the information I've been able to find thus far...
* A certificate of marriage for Thomas Grattan and May (Mae?) Saunders, both from Marsh Creek, PA dates 8/13/1889. It was witnessed by Francis White and L. Darling and signed by H. Vas Burg of Lindley, NY. It appears as though the wedding took place in Lindley as well.
* A notation of a marriage of Charles C. Grattan and Katherine O. Straley on 7/13/1918. The marriage took place in Corning, NY but I believe the Charles is the son of Thomas Grattan mentioned above.
* A notation of the birth of Charlie C. Grattan on 7/2/1890 (I believe the Charles C. Grattan mentioned above).
* There are three death notations as well:
Mae Saunders Grattan on 1/19/1919
Thomas Grattan on 9/23/1927
Charles C. Grattan on 3/11/1969
* A certificate of graduation from the 7th grade to the 8th grade of Galeton Public School dates June 4, 1903 for Charles Grattan. It was signed by his teacher, Mattie V. Cole and the principal, R. O. Welfling.
Any assistance you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached by e-mail at LLb12@cornell.edu. Thank you again!
Joyce,
News of a success story. About 2 years ago I read the letter from Lisa
Coots that she had purchased a Bible at an auction outside Mansfield,
PA. I saw the note at the following link.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/bibles/grattan1.htm
I responded to Lisa and she graciously gave me the Bible with no charge. I took her and family out to dinner and we've become friends in the years past. Mrs. Gratton was a Straley , and my mothers great aunt. I was very appreciative of Ms Coots's generosity. Most folks connected with genealogy seem to be. Once again, thanks for your site..
John--
