Wellsboro Borough

In area Wellsboro is the largest borough, except Fall Brook, in the county of Tioga. It was christened Wellsboro in its infancy, in the year 1802, by Mrs. Mary Wells Morris, wife of Benjamin Wistar Morris, the first settler, and sister of William and Gideon Wells, who were pioneers and first settlers in the township now known as Delmar, from which wellsboro was organized as a borough in the year 1830. Four years after receiving the name of Wellsboro, it was selected as the county seat of Tioga County, which honorable distinction it has since enjoyed. John Norris was its first burgess.
