Roushy Cemetery
Town of Ashland, Chemung County, New York
--- Biographies and Personal Photos
The Roushy Cemetery is located in the Town of Ashland, Chemung Co.,
NY. It is situated on the east side of State Highway #14, one-mile north
of the New York - Pennsylvania line, and about 300-feet south of the junction
of the Rogers Road, a town highway, and Route # 14. The plot is the responsibility
of the town and has been cleared of high grass, weeds end brush. About
a quarter of the grounds has no markers, and there is no evidence or any
burials there. A white wooden rail fence defines the west, or roadside,
line, while a combination wood and wire fence marks the limits of the other
three sides.
The plot is approximately 130-feet in width and 275-feet in depth and
lies on a slight incline. About two dozen markers are broken and/or off
their bases. Several lay intact on the round and a few of these cannot
be read because of erosion. Another dozen stubs of stones mark unidentified
graves. It was necessary to apply liberal amounts of chalk to most of the
monuments, while many had to be dug our of the sod. All markers, regardless
of condition were carefully scrutinized.
In 1931-32, Mr. & Mrs Hugh Staver recorded the old cemetery, but
for some reason did not report many of the monuments which were read in
1974. Although they did not record any infants or children, some markers
reported by them were not found in 1974. Markers Reported by the Stavers,
but not found in 1974, are marked by an asterisk (*).
This list of markers was compiled on Aug. 8, 1974 by Miss Isabel
Ridall and Joseph C. Boyd.

Hello Joyce
I have some photos of the Roushey Cemetery that I took last year.
Would you want to post them on your site. One of the photos is of
the tombstone of Isabella McCreery Roushey, wife of Michael Roushey. Why
isn't she in the listing of those buried in the Roushey Cemetery. Answer
- See Warning

Handwritten: Roushy Cem 1811=1902 (Tombstone)
Stephen T. BROWN, the aged father of railroad superintendent,
George R. Brown, died at his home here at 3:300 o’clock Saturday morning
after one week’s illness from a stroke of apoplexy at the advanced age
of 91 years. His wife, who survives him, is 87 years old. They
celebrated their sixty-seventh wedding anniversary last February.
Mrs. Brown was born in North Hector in Schuyler county and moved to the
Fassett farm when 19 years of age. His wife was born on the farm
and says that she desires to be buried in the cemetery, in a quiet vale
near the old homestead, where all that remains mortal of her husband will
be lowered to Mothter Earth this afternoon. Funeral will be at the
house at 1:30. Dec. 22.
