Elmira Republican 1854 09-Feb   Dunn, Catharine AN OLD LADY: Mrs. Catharine Dunn, residing in Nunda, Livingston Co., was born Oct. 15, 1753, and is therefore now one hundred years old. We understand she is smart and in possession of all her faculties. She came to the Chemung valley from Orange county about 70 years ago, and from here moved to Nunda, where she has since resided. She is the grand-mother of Mr. John Carpenter of this town.

Daily Republican 1854 31-Jul D Ferrel, John Mysterious Suicide: On Friday about noon, the body of an Irishman named John Ferrel, was found suspended by the neck, with a cord, to the limb of a tree in the woods, about two miles west of the Pine Woods Hotel, in the town of Southport…body still warm when cut down...had been working for a farmer named Laughlin...had been living in a bark hut since leaving home two or three days previously...had shown no signs of insanity while employed...did not learn his age.

Mr. and Mrs. Hammond were at Southport as their farewell visit, intending immediately to remove to the Far West. Say not that beauty, health or love Can save us from the hand of death; In her were all combined to prove Our hope depends upon a breath.

Daily Republican 1854 26-Jul D Partridge, Milton SAD CASE OF DROWNING: Yesterday afternoon, about 5 o'clock, a young man, about 16 years of age, named Milton Partridge (only son of Capt. Partridge of this village) was drowned in the Chemung by jumping over Hills Dam, situated above the upper bridge. It seems that he, with several others had gone up above there to bathe, and proposed to his comrades to jump which caused his death. Immediately afer he had jumped over the sheet of water he cried out to those on shore, that "all was right" - but in a few minutes they missed sight of him, the counter current having carried him under the dam. About an hour and a half elapsed before his body was recovered, although diligent exertions were made by a large number of our citizens to find it. On removing some brush wood, which had lodged near the dam the body floated down stream several rods, and was caught. It was then taken to the residence of Capt. Partridge, on Lake Street. Young Partridge was a lad of rare promise, and his untimely death is sincerely deplored by

Daily Republican 1854 11-May D Thomas, Malinda D - SUDDEN DEATH: On Monday afternoon, a colored woman by the name of Mrs. Malinda Thomas, while in the kitchen of Haight's Hotel, fell suddenly to the floor, as it was supposed, in a fit. On taking her to her residence, on the corner of Dickinson & Fifth streets, she shortly afterwards died. On Tuesday a post-mortem examination on the body was held by Coronor Wey which resulted in the discovery that her death was occasioned by the flow of blood from a rupture of a large tumor in the pit of her stomach.
