Join the Chemung Valley History Museum for "100 Years Ago:  The Journal Comes Alive", the final Local History Bus Tour, on Friday, September 19th with tour leader Allen C. Smith (with a little help from Diane Janowski) as he takes us on a tour of  some of Old Elmira's notorious sites!  After the 2-hour tour, we will all convene back at the Museum for a light lunch provided by PDR's.  The cost is $10 for Members and $12 for Non-Members and the tours leave the Museum promptly at 10am with a return for lunch at 12pm.  If you have any questions or for people who want to book a spot either e-mail me back or call (607) 734-4167, ext. 205.

  Just to let you know, we have postponed the Chemung Valley History Museum's final Local History Bus Tour of the season until Thursday, October 9th, 2003 due to the weather expected tomorrow.

“Memories are Made Like This…”

Grandparents, celebrate National Grandparent’s Day by bringing your grandchild for an afternoon of recording family memories and making a memory book that your grandchild can treasure for years to come.  Coordinator of Research Collections Jason Harmon will provide introductory genealogy information in case you’d like to add a family tree to your memory book and Education Coordinator Maureen Reynolds will help you assemble your memory books.  Bring pictures of you and your grandchild, you at your grandchild’s age, or pictures of your grandchild through the years.

Current Exhibitions at the Chemung Valley History Museum, 415 East Water Street, Elmira, NY 14901, http://www.chemungvalleymuseum.org/ or (607) 734-4167:
June – December 2003:  Fugitives No More:  Chemung County’s African Americans During the 19th Century.  This exhibition explores the differing roles of African Americans in Chemung County during the 19th Century and how they made a difference in the lives of those they encountered.

 January – November 2003:  The High Line: A City Divided, A City United.  This exhibition revolves around the photographic documentation of the elevated rail line construction through Elmira in the 1930's.  The exhibit also features the words of local residents who were involved with the construction in the 1930's.

June – December 2003:  The Great Car Thing.  This exhibition features three automobiles from the Prohibition Era.

Permanent Exhibition:  A Community Album.  This exhibition focuses on two themes: "preserving the past" and "how lives were changed." Themes include: ethnic groups and neighborhoods, Elmira in the Civil War, and Mark Twain's Elmira. "Hands-on" interactive units, such as a listening station that features our music CD, help bring history alive!

This year's final History on Wheels Bicycle Tour is right around the corner.  This year's final History on Wheels Bicycle Tours is "Elmira's Architectural Treasures".  Join Quarry Farm Caretaker Richard Rolinski as he takes us on a tour of some of Elmira's architectural achievements!  Join us Saturday, August 9th, 2003 from 8am-10am.  Cost is $5 for Members, $6 for Non-Members, and a family of four for $16, with each additional member $3 a piece.   A light breakfast will be served following the tour at the Chemung Valley History Museum.  For more information to book a seat, call (607) 734-4167, ext. 205!  Reservations must be made at least one day prior to each bike trip!

Thursday, May 29th, 2003, the final installment of our Civil War Lecture Series, which is free and open to everyone -
“Women in the Civil War” – Join Allegany County Historian Craig Braack as he discusses the roles women played in both the North and the South during the Civil War.  Their roles ranged from life on the homefront to sending supplies to various battlefield participants.  He will show how the emotional effects the war forced these women to endure and survive.

Also, beginning again this June, the Historical Society will be sponsoring the History on Wheels bike Tours, which will be held once a month thru August beginning on June 21st with "Elmira's Cemeteries" with Town of Elmira Historian George Farr.  George will discuss the hidden treasures contained within Woodlawn Cemetery with the group.  Cost for each bike tour is $5 for Members, $6 for Non-members or $16 for a family of four, and $3 for each additional person.  Cost includes a light breakfast after the tour, which begins at the museum at 8:00am and lasts approximately 2 hours.  The tour will be led by Paul Kingsbury of Kingsbury's Cyclery.

Also beginning in June is the first installment of our Local History Bus Tours, which will also be held once a month thru September, and will begin on June 19th with "Churches of Chemung County" with County Historian J. Arthur Kieffer.  Archie will be taking the participants on a tour of some of Chemung County's architectural and religious treasures.  Cost for each bus tour is $10 for Members and $12 for Non-members.  Cost includes a light lunch which will be served upon return to the Museum after each tour.  The tour begins at 10am and lasts approximately 2 hours.  Reservations must be made at least one week in advance of each trip.

J. Arthur “Archie” Kieffer will give a lecture on Sunday, June 8 at 2:00 PM at the Chemung Valley History Museum at 415 East Water Street in Elmira.
The lecture is based on his new booklet The Bridges of Chemung County from the Chemung County Historical Society’s “Chemung County Snapshots” series.
Following the lecture will be a book signing. The event is free and there will be books for sale on the day of the lecture.

Thursday, May 1st, 2003 – George Farr – “The Voices of History:  The American Civil War, The Letters of Private Andrew Brockway 107th New York Volunteers” – Join Town of Elmira Historian George Farr as he takes you through the activities of the 107th Regiment beginning with their mustering in at the Elmira Rendezvous and then through the major points of their campaign, as portrayed in Private Brockway’s letters.

Thursday, May 8th, 2003 – Eileen Patch – Voice from the Civil War, A Living History Presentation – Dressed as her great grandmother, Sarah Englis in historically accurate 1880s clothes, Ms. Eileen Patch will look back 20 years to the war and read excerpts from her son’s letters, who was a member of the 89th New York.  These letters were edited and compiled into a book entitled “This from George”.  Copies of this book will be on sale in the Museum Gift Shop and Ms. Patch will be happy to sign them after her presentation.

Thursday, May 15th, 2003 – Douglas Oakes – “Elmira at Gettysburg” – Join the Chemung Valley Living History Guild’s Doug Oakes as he discusses different regiments, which included members from the Chemung Valley that fought at Gettysburg.  He will explain where and when these regiments fought during that historic three-day battle.
