Notes for MICHAEL CLANCY:
Birthplace in Ireland unknown though there is a high probability that he was born in or near Parish Doora which is just East of Ennis, County Clare, Ireland. We do know that his children were baptized in Doora Parish.

Dear Mr. Clancy,
While there is no town land called Doora, it is our understanding that the
area called Doora is sited in the general area of the town land of Noughaval
- which you will see from the map which we forwarded.
Yours sincerely,
ANTOINETTE O'BRIEN
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Noughaval is located in the heart of the Burren about five miles east of Lisdoonvarna and is in the parish of Ballyvaughan. Its name comes from the Irish - nuadh gabhail, meaning the new settlement, new habitation or new acquisition. In the 1837 census the parish held 408 inhabitants and 64 of these lived in the village of Noughaval.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Mr. Clancy,
Further to your E-mail of the 24th March (2002) -
to the best of my knowledge children baptized in the ecclesiastical Parish
of Doora-Barefield were actually baptized in the Parish Church at Barefield.
The registers for the Parish are held at the parochial house in Barefield
and I am sure that when you visit the area the priest there will clarify
the situation.
Sincerely,
----------------------------------

Kilraghtis
A parish, in the barony of Bunratty, county of Clare, and province of Munster, 31/2 miles (N. E.) from Ennis, on the road to Gort ; containing 1866 inhabitants. It comprises 4594 statute acres, as allotted under the tithe act, and though only one mile broad is nearly six miles long. At Ballyally is the seat of Andrew Stackpoole, Esq., and at Barefield is a very picturesque lake. The parish is in the diocese of Killaloe ; the rectory forms part of the rectorial union of Ogashin, and the vicarage part of the vicarial union of Dromcliffe. The tithes amount to £97. 7. 81/4., of which £46. 3. 1. is payable to the rector, and the remainder to the vicar. In the R. C. divisions it is part of the district of Dowry or Doora : there is a chapel at Barefield. The ruins of the old church still remain in the burial-ground. About 230 children are educated in three private schools.

Noughaval
A parish, in the barony of Burren, county of Clare, and province of Munster, 2 miles (N. N. E.) from Kilfenora, on the road from Ennis to Burren ; containing 408 inhabitants, of which number, 64 are in the hamlet. It comprises 4521 statute acres, as allotted under the tithe act, only a small portion of which is under tillage, the greater part consisting of rocky limestone pasture, yielding a rich though scanty herbage : there are about 80 acres of pasturable mountain. The living is a rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Kilfenora, united at a period unknown to the vicarage of Carrune, or Carne, together constituting the union of Noughaval and the corps of the precentorship of Kilfenora, in the patronage of the Bishop. The tithes amount to £35, and of the entire benefice to £70, the whole payable to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, by whom the benefice is at present held in sequestration : the glebe comprises 26a. 0r. 22p. In the R. C. divisions the parish forms part of the union or district of Carrune, or Carne : the chapel is at the village of Noughaval. About 35 children are educated in a private school. The ruins of the church stand on the glebe : and at Banroe, Ballymurphy, and Ballygannor are the ruins of the castles respectively so called. Within the limits of the parish are three ancient forts, attributed to the Danes ; and at Ballygannor is a cromlech of extraordinary dimensions, the table stone being nearly 40 feet long and 10 broad, and supported by upright flag stones, rising about six feet above the ground.

The Tithe Appointment Books for the old Civil Parish of Doora, dated 1826, list three Clancys as land holders/leasers: Thomas; Martin and John. Research suggests strongly that one of these was Michael's Father though we cannot be certain which one.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
St Brecan's Church is the old name for Doora Church, the ancient building east of Doora dump, off the Ennis to Quin road. St. Brecan of Aran founded a church in Dalcais. It was named after him and it is thought this is the church in question. It has been described as being of considerable antiquity. It is in fairly good state of repair today although the west gable is gone. One of the walls houses a round-headed window, which is believed to be of a very remote period.
There was a holy well in the locality dedicated to St. Duran, thought to be the saint who founded the first church in this area. Legend has it that when smallpox or measles came to the area, families would bring the children to the well and dip them in to ward off diseases. Stations - prayers and mass - were still carried out at this well until the 1830's. The well itself is still marked on the Ordinance Survey maps of the area.
Doora may lay claim to other wells dedicated to St. Brecan in the town land of Kilbrecan, in which sits the ruined church of Carrantemple. There is also a well dedicated to St. Micheal and a church called Killevalla in the Doora area.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There were some Clanceys evicted from the Lands of Lisivoroheen in Cty Clare in 1849.
---------------------------------------------------------
The following was excerpted from the Clare Library web site:
Emigration
by Naoise Ó Cléirigh
"The Catholic Irish who landed in America before the mid-1850's arrived on sailing ships. April and May were the recommended months for the emigrant to take passage. July and August were to be avoided as the prevalence of south-west winds made for a tedious journey. Those travelling to the U.S. depended almost entirely on their own devices, relations already in America frequently providing passage money."
....................."Each migrant had to have sufficient provisions to last the journey, which usually took from 50 to 70 days. Those early emigrants were much to be pitied. What a traumatic experience it was for people who had not been more than fifteen miles away from home and who could not read nor write, (in 1841, 61% of all Clare people over 5 years were illiterate). The Irish peasant's knowledge of life ahead of him was often fragmentary and fanciful."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Clancy family arrived in New York city ("Eastport" was noted on his naturalization form as the port of entry) from Ireland in May or June 1840. Michael was sponsored for US naturalization by Victor Piollet who, in conjunction with the Wells family of Wyalusing PA, recruited Irish men to come to the US to work on the construction of the North Branch Canal.
A search of the index of immigrants arriving in NYC during 1820-1846, Microfilm M-261, roll 16, by NARA did not yield any Clancys or variations thereof. A review of Film # 0830237, Maine, Passamquoddy, Custom Records 1820-1944, for the year 1840, was also made by John Clancy. This area would have included the Eastport ME arrivals. The film listed passengers by quarter of the year with no reference to specific dates or ships. The tape was missing data for July-Sept 1840 but this should not have been an issue as we believe the Clancys arrived in May or June. Many Irish did arrive in America via this port in 1840. There was a Michael and Ellen Clancy, both age 26, who arrived sometime during the 2nd quarter (Apr-June) of 1840. Tantalizingly close but (1) no children and (2) the ages are wrong. Also arriving at that time were William (age 20) and John(19) Holleran/Halleran - Ellen's maiden name. It was interesting to note that very few families with small children were evident. It appeared that most of the Irish immigrants were in their 20-30's, generally single. Or, perhaps the children were simply not listed/counted?

Documents indicate Michael's profession was stonecutter.
No Census record for the Michael Clancys found in the 1840 census in:
-Towanda Borough
-Wysox
-Sheshquin
- Wyalusing
- Asylum
- Wells
There was however a David Clancy family in the 1840 Wysox census:
Clancy, David 200001 00001 4
Translation: 2 males under age 5; 1 male between 30 & 40; 1 female between 20 & 30.
We have no idea if there is any connection between this family and the Michael Clancy family. Henry Farley, Sayre PA, and President of the Bradford County Historical Society, states that there was a priest by the name of Clancy in the Bradford County area at this time. A search of the Philadelphia Diocese online web site did find one priest named Clancy who, for a short while, did travel to the Bradford Co. area to minister to the faithful.

Where are Michael, John, Bridget, Ellen,Thomas and Ann in 1860?
Michael - there is in the same census a Michael Clancy age 28, farmhand, found at the Ed.. Coolbaugh home. Dwelling 1567; family # 1487, images 30/31, ancestry.com. No further record found for Michael.
John - no record found. There is, apparently, a John Clancy buried in some Wysox cemetery w/o birth/death dates. Need to pursue this further.
Bridget - would have been Abt 24 at the time of the 1860 census.
Ellen - there is in the same census a female domestic, age 18, named Clancy residing at the ? Coolbaugh house, Dwelling 1536, Family # 1449, images 25 & 26, Ancestry.com. The census form has Clancy as the first name and ditto marks (for Coolbaugh, head of household, several people above her name). This was probably an error by the census taker and Clancy was her last name. Our Ellen married Charles Schultz in 1861.
Thomas - there is in the 1860 Wysox census a Thomas Clancy, age 20, farmhand, at the Ferdinand(??) Allen house: Dwelling 1496, Family # 1411, Image 20, Ancestry.com. Our Thomas married Catherine Daugherty Abt 1865.
Ann - there is an Ann Clancy, domestic, age 15 at the (?) Coolbaugh farm in Wysox. Images 20 & 21 Ancestry.com; dwelling # 1502; family # 1416; pages 192 & 193.
Note: Michael, Ellen and Ann all working at different Coolbaugh farms. Coincidence? Any relationship between the families?

Census: 1880, No mention in census; died 1870-1880 ?
Occupation: Stonecutter
Residence: 1870, Census reveals he lived in N. Towanda
Notes for ELLEN HALLORAN:
Ellen was apparently pregnant with Thomas Clancy when she and her family immigrated to the US. We believe Michael and Ellen arrived in the US in May or June 1840. Thomas was born that September in PA It is difficult to image such a trip (30+ days; steerage; little space; poor hygiene & food) with 4 (5?) children plus being 6 months pregnant.
Note: in the 1870 census Ellen is residing with her son Patrick while Michael, her husband, is residing with his son Thomas in North Towanda.

Notes for PATRICK CLANCY:
Patrick was baptized 14 January, 1830, in the Ecclesiastical Parish-of-Doora, Kilraghtis and Templemaley. At his and other Clancy children baptisms the priest indicated that the family resided in the DOORA section of the parish. Baptism sponsors were John McCallan & Bridget Doolaghty.
In the US Patrick & Ellen lived on the old Clancy homestead in Wysox, PA on Laning Creek Rd. No children.
1850 Wysox Census
Note that Patrick Clancy was a laborer at the J.E. Piollet farm. Mr. Piollet sponsored the Clancy's naturalization and, most probably, their immigration to PA to work on the North Branch Canal.

Q: Who is "Ellen?" Patrick did not marry Ellen Hurley until 1873. Could this be his mother Ellen Halloran?
A: It probably was indeed his mother. The 1870 census also finds Michael, his father, residing with his son Thomas Clancy. One can only wonder why the parents were at different sons' homes. Was it illness, economic, other?
We assume Patrick and his mother resided at the old Clancy homestead in 1870. Later, Patrick and his wife Ellen Hurley also resided there. They had no children. Note that Patrick was a stone mason like his father Michael.

The 1900 Wysox Census finds Patrick, age 70, a retired farmer living with Ellen. Ellen states that she is 60 (?) and that she did not ever have any children and that she was born in New York (state?) in 1839 (?) and that both of her parents were born in Ireland. Patrick confirms that he immigrated to the US in 1840. Patrick will die in 1906.

Emigration: 1840, With parents into New York.
Naturalization: September 18, 1868, Petition submitted
Occupation 1: 1850, Census reveals he was a laborer on one of the Poillet farms
Occupation 2: 1870, Stone Mason17
Notes for ELLEN HURLEY:
Note that she was born in NY and her sibs were all born in PA. We do not know if her parents were wed in Ireland or in the US. Notice also that her next sister was born 8 years later. It is possible that there were other births in between but that they died.
Per 1850 Standing Stone census she was 12 at that time? Need to research the 1836 DOB info.
The 1870 Standing Stone Census finds her age 30 living with her widowed mother Bridget and her brothers Daniel and Patrick.
The 1910 census finds her (Widow; age 67) residing with her brother Patrick (single; age 54) in Standing Stone. See image #6.
The 1920 census finds her residing with her brother Daniel Hurley and his family in Standing Stone Township. She was 82 at the time and lived for another 4 years.
Died at the American Hotel at the age of 87 after
a 3 week illness. Buried in SS Peter & Paul's cemetery.

In the 1860 Wysox census a Michael Clancy, age 28, farmhand, found at the Ed.. Coolbaugh home. Dwelling 1567; family # 1487, images 30/31, ancestry.com
There was no record of Michael Clancy in the 1870 Census for Wysox, Standing Stone, Towanda, Towanda Boro or North Towanda. It is assumed that sometime after the 1860 census he either moved away or died. If he died locally perhaps he was buried in the old Catholic Cemetery where the Orsam/Sylvania Plant is now located and where we believe his parents were buried - see notes for father Michael and the mass transfer and mass re burial, without headstones, of remains from that cemetery to the present SS Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Perhaps he served in the Civil war? Could not find any Michael Clancy who served in a PA outfit. Did find the following NY entries with enlistment ages about right:
# First Name MI Last Name Residence ST Enlist Rank State Served Enlist Age Enlist Date Enlist Place Survived War Events
2 Michael Clancy Priv NY 35 04/09/64 5th Congres. District, NY Y

6 Michael Clancy Priv NY 29 08/04/62 Albany, NY Y
7 Michael Clancy Priv NY 32 08/25/62 Utica, NY Y
Note that all of the above soldiers survived the war. If our Michael was one of them you would think that he would have returned to Bradford County.

iii. JOHN CLANCY24, b. 1833, County Clare Ireland25; d. Aft. 185026.
Notes for JOHN CLANCY:
John was baptized on July 19, 1833 in the Parish of Doora, County Clare. His baptism sponsors were John Callinan & Mary Halloran. He has not yet been found on the local PA census records after 1850 when he is listed at his parents home-see father Michael.
There is a John Clancy buried in a (non Catholic) Wysox cemetery, w/o birth/death dates, but he may also have moved away or served in the Civil War. Or, if he died young locally he may have been buried in the old cemetery ("Sylvania Plant") and his remains later moved to mass grave at present SS Peter & Pauls as we believe his parents were.

4. THOMAS3 CLANCY (MICHAEL2, CLANCY1) was born September 18, 1840 in Bradford County, PA37, and died November 16, 1917 in Towanda, PA38. He married CATHERINE DAUGHERTY38 Abt. 1865 in No record found. She was born Abt. 1842 in Ireland39, and died January 14, 1889 in Towanda, PA40.
Notes for THOMAS CLANCY:
Farmer, part owner of a saw mill located on Sugar Creek - see story in "History of the Towandas", 1770-1886, C.F.Heverly, page 239 re: "Myer Mills". Thomas and Catherine lived in No. Towanda Township. Following is an excerpt from Heverly's history re North Towanda:
"It lies between Ulster on the north and Towanda on the south, the Susquehanna on the east, and Burlington on the west. The Sugar creek runs through the township from west to east, and a number of small streams come into it from each of the hillsides that bound the creek valley. North Towanda is the smallest in area of the townships of the county. Along the creek, and between the creek and the river on the south, the soil is adapted to grain raising. On the north the land is higher, and the soil is not so easily cultivated. The near proximity of the borough of Towanda makes a ready market for all farm produce, and the street running north from the borough is being rapidly filled up by residents, and from time to time the enlargement of its lines has encroached upon the original limits of the township. There is not a church building or store in the township, the people going to Towanda for religious privileges or the purchase of goods. About 1796, Isaac Foster built a grist mill near the mouth of the creek. In 1799, Jacob Myer enlarged and improved it. Isaac Myer, a son of his, was in possession for many years, when it was popularly known as "Myer's mills." They have been rebuilt, enlarged, and improved from time to time, so that they have fully kept abreast the best structures in the county. Abiel Foster built a mill at what is known as the pail-factory. There is now a saw-will there, the pail-factory having been abandoned. "
1850- Thomas resided with his parents

Note that Michael the father is residing with his son Thomas. Michael's wife, Ellen, was residing with her son Patrick at this same time (see "Patrick"). Perhaps the parents were unable to care for themselves physically and/or financially and the brothers agreed to share the responsibility.

Note:
BCHS has a notation on an index card, which is attributed to an article in the Bradford Republican(?) January 28, 1897, that Thomas Clancy, son of Thomas Clancy died Saturday (?date) in Towanda, age 1 year. Another notation of the same date, attributed to the Bradford Star, on another card states that Charles Francis Clancy, son of Thomas Clancy, died Saturday in Towanda, age 7 months. As we know that Charles was alive at the time of the 1900 Census (see Thomas Clancy jr.) this does not make sense. Not sure how to reconcile the two notations. Perhaps there was a baby Thomas who died in early 1897, and if 7 months old, would have been born in June 1896 but Charles was supposedly born in that month and year. Twins? Check birth records. Need to get a copy of Charles death certificate!

More About THOMAS CLANCY:
Burial: November 20, 1917, SS Peter & Paul Cemetery, Towanda, Bradford, PA41
Immigration: 1840, Born shortly after parents arrived from Ireland
Occupation: 1880, Miller42
Residence: 1910, North York Ave. North Towanda PA43
Notes for CATHERINE DAUGHERTY:
No record of Catherine in the 1850 Wysox or Standing Stone Census.
The 1860 Wysox, Bradford, PA census shows a Catherine Da(o?)ugherty as a servant, age 20, born Ireland, in the household of Joseph E. Piollet, H/H, farmer age 40 ("Wysox 1860 Census, images 28 & 29, page 1053, Piollet family as servant"). Victor Piollet (not sure of connection with Joseph-brother or cousin?) served as the naturalization sponsor for Michael Clancy's immigration application. Michael was Thomas' father. Not sure if this is the same Catherine. If it is we assume that she immigrated sometime between 1850 and 1860. Recall that Wysox and Towanda were only 3 miles apart and that the nearest RC church for Wysox was SS Peter & Paul's in Towanda.
------------------------------------------------------------
The Dec 13, 1948 Towanda Daily Review obit for her son Thomas F. Clancy noted that her name was ELLEN Daugherty Clancy. Perhaps someone was thinking of the grandmother by mistake?
-----------------------------------------------------------
The 1860 Cherry Township, Sullivan, PA census, image #42, contains the following DOHERTY family:
John,60,Farmer,Ireland
Mary,40,Ireland
Catherine,18,Ireland
Ellen,10,Ireland
Bridget,8,PA
Margaret,4,PA
Cecilia,11/12,PA
Do not know if this is our Catherine but the age is right. Note that based on the above the family may have immigrated between 1850-1852. Cherry Twp was next to Dushore which had its own RC Church-St. Basil's. This Catherine's age is a better fit with what our Catherine gave to the 1880 census.
Recall that we have never found a copy of the marriage certificate of Thomas Clancy and Catherine Daugherty. Could this above be our Catherine and was she married at St. Basil's in Dushore? The certificate would identify Catherine's parents and resolve the mystery.
Contaced St. Basil's by letter in March 2003 and received their reply dated March 10, 2003 (On File). Diane Fowler, secretary, said they had no record of Thomas and Catherine's marriage.

Notes for MARGARET CLANCY:
The 1910 census has Margaret residing at her father's and her age was 43. By 1920 her brother Martin and her sister Mary (Lynch) were the only residents at the house. Where was Margaret?
The 1920 Census for Los Angeles finds her age 53, Widowed, a dressmaker living as a boarder at James and Katherine Harrison's residence on Hudson Ave. James was an actor.
In 1930 she was back in Bradford County, residing with her brother Martin Clancy and sisiter Mary Clancy Lynch at her childhood home in North Towanda. Perhaps she was only visiting; death in the family?
We know from Martin's obit (1948) that she resided in Los Angeles at that time.
She died at her cousin William Lynch's home in PA or NY.

Notes for JOHN CLANCY:
Lived at his father's home in No. Towanda at the time of the 1880 census when he was 10 years old. Census records for 1890 are not available. No record of him in the local censuses for 1900 and 1910 though not all records for the Towanda area have been checked. No record of his death locally so he may have moved away sometime before 1900. He was mentioned in his father's October 1917 Will so he was presumed to be alive, somewhere, at that time. WWI for the US started April 1917.
The record of whose is buried in his father's plot in the SS Peter & Paul's cemetery contains a reference to "John X" without date.

Notes for MARTIN CLANCY:
Single. Barber (shop on Bridge St. Towanda). Violinist; conducted his own orchestra.
The 1920 Census finds Martin, age 43, single, a barber, living in No. Towanda, Brad., Pa., ED#25, Image #1 in the "Towanda-Ulster Rd". Living with Martin is his widowed sister Mary Lynch. Mary's husband died in 1888 shortly after they were married. Mary had earlier resided with her father. Mary is a school teacher. Both indicate that they and their father were born in PA and that their mother was born in IRL. It is believed that Martin and his sister reside in their father's prior home.
In the 1930 census (North Towanda,Bradford,PA; ED 36; ancestry image #6), Martin now has two widowed sisters living with him:
Martin Clancy, Head, 54, Single, Barber
Mary Lynch, sister, 62, widowed, no occupation
Margaret Wilcox, sister, 63 widowed, no occupation (Samuel Wilcox died 1905)
Martin would die in 1948; Mary in 1950 and Margaret in 1954.

In the 1860 Wysox census there is an Ann Clancy, age 15, listed as a domestic at the (?) Coolbaugh home. Pages 192/193; images 20/21 Ancestry.com; dwelling 1502; family # 1416.
It was reported in "History of Bradford County Pennsylvania, 1891-1995; Curtis Media Inc, 1996" that Ann's sister, Bridget, had married William Thompson and resided (1906) in Elmira NY. We now believe that it was Ann who married William Thompson. This assumption is based upon the 1870 & 1880 Elmira, Chemung, NY census:

The above, by itself, does not prove that "Ann" is Ann Clancy. A marriage certificate or a Will would be needed to confirm. Ann Clancy was born in PA. However both her mother and her father were born in Ireland. Thus, the above (1880 Census) birth locations for her parents could pose an issue. However, note that Ann's birth location is PA while for all of her children it is noted that their mother was born in Ireland. Was this a mistake by the enumerator and/or the family member answering the questions or could Ann be the 2nd wife of William? If one believes, from the 1870 Census, that the noted children: John, Mary, William and Thomas are the same persons as noted in the 1880 Census, and that it is the same Ann in both census, then it seems fair to assume (pending better records) that this is the same family in both census and that Ann is the first wife of William.
The obit for Margaret Clancy Kirwin (d 1923), sister of Ann, Bridget et al, notes that the following persons from out of town attended Margaret's funeral:
