Uriah moved to Missouri where he married an Indian woman and raised a family. A Uriah Maine was in Clark County, Indiana in 1840. A U. E. Main was in Wisconsin in 1850 and 1851 and 1860.

Would like to know more about Uriah E. Maine's early life in Tioga Co. Pa. He moved to Wiss. about 1848. His father John Maine Mother- Nancy Spencer. I have quite a bit on the Maines and their branches. RPaul 29478@aol.com, 1218 E. College, Broken Arrow, Okla, 74012

Second Generation

2. John2 Maine (Joseph3, Peter4, Jeremiah5, Ezekiel6, John7 Mayne, Alexander8, John9)(1) was born in Scipio, Cayuga County, New York 29 NOV 1779. John died 17 DEC 1857 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 78. His body was interred DEC 1857 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

He married Nancy Spencer 25 DEC 1808. Nancy was born 18 APR 1792 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut. Nancy was the daughter of Uriah Spencer and Deborah Elliott. Nancy died 21 SEP 1873 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 81. Her body was interred SEP 1873 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.(2)

Historical Note: .(3) "A grist mill was erected at Mainesburg about 1809, by Noah Rumsey, Sr. Two or three years later he sold it to Jonathan L. Spencer. In 1824 he sold his lands and mill and other personal property to John Maine, a pioneer in Lawrence township, who also bought the lands and personal property of Lyman Spencer. Mr. Maine operated the mill until 1841, when he sold it to Solon Richards, who ran it for a number of years, and sold it to R. K. Brundage, and he in turn to Philemon Doud, who tore down the old mill and erected a steam mill on its site. N. E. Calkins succeeded Doud as owner of the property, which finally passed into the hands of Hiram Horton, who leased it to Aaron Austin. On April 17, 1894 the mill was destroyed and has not been rebuilt."

John was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 Census in Delmar Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.(4) John was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Lawrence Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.(5) Historical Note: .(6) " In 1820 Lyman and Orange Spencer were operating a distillery near Mainesburg. It afterwards became the property of John Maine, who ran it for a few years and then discontinued the business."

John was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.(7) Nancy and John were both 60-70 for this census. Their household included one male under five, two females 5-10, two males and one female 10-15, one male and one female 15-20,one male and one female 20-30, and one female 40-50. Obviously this is an extended family including the family of one of their children. Since the 1840 census records no names but the head of husehold, we can not conclusively identify the family.

In the Census of 1850, John was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.(8) John and George were farmers. John's property was worth $5000 which is one of the highest valuations in the township. John was the first postmaster at Mainesburg which was originally called Corey Creek when it opened in 27 JAN 1830. The post office name was changed to Mainesburg on 1 April 1830 in honor of John Maine. He served until 31 March 1846. In 1886, the final h was dropped from the name and it has since been called Mainesburg.

I do not find John listed on the 1830 Sullivan census, although there are two John Maine households in Cayuga County NY where John originated. Also, father in law, Uriah Spencer was in Delmar township in Tioga County.

" John Maine was born in Scipio, New York, November 29, 1779, and came to Tioga County in early manhood, locating in Lawrence township. About 1825 he settled near the site of Mainesburg, which village was named in his honor. he was a miller by trade, and always followed the business of farming. On December 25, 1808, he married Nancy SPENCER,,,, to which union were born fourteen children... Mr. Maine was a Democrat in early manhood, subsequently joined the Free Soil Party, and later entered the Republican ranks. Both he and his wife were members of the Baptist church, and he was connected with the Masonic order. Mr. Maine died December 17, 1857, and his wife September 21, 1873.

In the Census of 1860, Horace was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.(11) Horace was a farmer with real property worth $3000 and personal property worth $1200. 17. Joseph3 Maine (Peter4, Jeremiah5, Ezekiel6, John7 Mayne, Alexander8, John9) was born in North Stonington, New London County, Connecticut 4 APR 1753. Joseph died 1783 at age 30.

She married John Gordon. Sarah died 1854 in Mainesburg, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 93.

Joseph Maine and Sarah Rathbone had the following child:

+ 2 i. John2 Maine was born 29 NOV 1779.

18. Sarah3 Rathbone (Daniel4) was born in Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts 29 AUG 1760. Sarah died 1854 in Mainesburg, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 93.

She married twice. She married Joseph Maine in Richmond, Massachusetts. Joseph was born 4 APR 1753 in North Stonington, New London County, Connecticut. Joseph was the son of Peter Maine and Mary Egglestone. Joseph died 1783 at age 30. She married John Gordon. Apparently married a second time as she is with her son, John, in 1850 census as Sarah Counsilman. She was married to John Gordon after the death of Mr. Maine. Maine genealogy says she married W. Councilman after the death of Mr. Maine and married Mr. Gordon after the death of Mr. Councilman, but the census taker recorded her with the Councilman name in 1850.

19. Uriah3 Spencer (Christopher4) was born in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut 04 MAR 1770. Uriah died 1850 in Georgetown,,D.C., at age 80.

He married twice. He married Deborah Elliott about 1789 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut. Deborah was born 1769 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut. (See p. 244 of 1883 History) Parents Christopher and Olive found in LDS-IGI, ancestry of Christopher in LDS-AF in Spencer.GED.

Uriah Spencer and Deborah Elliott had the following children:

20 i. Fanny2 Spencer was born in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut about 1790.

+ 16 ii. Nancy Spencer was born 18 APR 1792.

21 iii. Horace Spencer was born in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut about 1795.

Uriah Spencer and Eleanor Boher had the following children:

22 iv. Polly Spencer was born in Lawrenceville, Lawrence Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania ABT 1796. I earlier had Polly's birth as about 1805, but her tombstone indicates earlier, age 41 at deat in 1835. In this case Eleanor Boher is too young to be her mother. Polly died 09 DEC 1835 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 39. Her body was interred DEC 1835 in King Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Town, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.(26) age at death 41 y on tombstone. She married Elijah Welch BEF 1814.

Elijah was born 1790 in Vermont. Elijah (27) was the son of Nathaniel Welch and Lura Dickinson. He married Charlotte Bliss AFT 1840. Elijah died 30 NOV 1862 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 72. His body was interred DEC 1862 in King Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Town, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.(28) Elijah was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.(29) Elijah was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.(30) Elijah's household included one female 5-10, three females 10-15, two females and one male 15-20, two males 20-30. Elijah was between 40 and 50. The household also included a woman 70-80 who was probably his mother Lura. Both Elijah and Lura were widowed at the time of this census.

In the Census of 1850, Elijah was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.(31) Elijah was a farmer with property worth $4000 which is one of the highest valuations listed on the 1850 census. Lura, called Lucy in the census, was blind. A Margaret Welch age 18 is listed. I have assumed this is the same as Maryette from the Minnie WELCH Seymour work. The three Spencer children are Charlotte's from her earlier marriage to Charles Spencer.

In the Census of 1860, Elijah was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.(32) Elijah was a farmer with real property worth $4000 and personal property worth $800. Almeda. Amanda and Mary Ellen were servants. Whose baby is eight month old Eugene? Is Mary Ellen listed in census Maryette? Source of Polly's parentage is the Tioga County History (1883 or 1897)where she is listed among their children. This source is reliable as it was written from interviews of people at that time. There is a problem with the birthdate of 1805 which makes her too young for the marriage i n1814. Needs investigation. Howard L. Williams gives name as Nancy Spencer rather than Polly, but Polly's sister Nancy was married to John Maine..

Uriah Spencer and Deborah Elliott had the following children:

23 v. Charles Spencer was born in Lawrenceville, Lawrence Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania about 1801. Charles died 1840 at age 39. He married Charlotte Bliss about 1822. Charlotte was born 07 APR 1808 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. Charlotte was the daughter of Stephen A. Bliss and Charlotte Bailey. She married Elijah Welch AFT 1840. She married Heber Cole* after 1862. Charlotte died after 1883 at age unknown.(33)

Uriah Spencer and Eleanor Boher had the following children:

24 vi. George Spencer was born in Lawrenceville, Lawrence Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania after 1804.

25 vii. Harriet Spencer was born in Lawrenceville, Lawrence Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania about 1807.

26. Deborah3 Elliott was born in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut 1769. Deborah died Nov 1802 in Lawrenceville, Lawrence Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 33.

She married Uriah Spencer about 1789 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut. Uriah was born 04 MAR 1770 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut. Uriah was the son of Christopher Spencer and Olive Stowe*. He married Eleanor Boher about 1804 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Uriah died 1850 in Georgetown,,D.C., at age 80. If you are not navigating this Tri-Counties Site via the left and right sidebars of the Current What's New page you are doing yourself a disservice. You can get to any place on the site easily by making yourself familiar with these subject and place topics. Try them all to be as familiar with the site's 16,000 plus pages as you can. Stop groping in the dark and take the lighted path. That's also the only way you'll find the search engines for the site or have access to the necessary messages I may leave for you. Make it easy on yourself.

Before you use this, please read this explanation about what I expect in return. This is a two way street so please reward my efforts with your contributions of genealogical research.

This is formatted in Modified Henry Format from Ultimate Family Tree Software. If you do not understand Modified Henry Format, please consult any reliable genealogical reference book.

This work is part of an active and dynamic project and it will be outdated as soon as it is printed. Please refer any contacts that you encounter who are interested in this back to me so that I can ensure that they have the most recent version of the work. This portion of it is neither complete nor perfect. It is through exchange that its quality and scope can increase. If you have anything to add or correct on this, please contact me. This particular family genealogy is in a very incomplete state but is being placed online in response to several researchers who have requested the information. Please list Joyce M. Tice of SRGP as the source in any work in which you use this material. Don't pass it on without my name and a way to reach me included. Such efforts will allow the material in the databae of SRGP to continue to grow and develop.
