The age column for females under age ten and females of age ten and under age sixteen has been taped over in the past and unreadable and there may have been females of that age group within the household. James appears on the 1812 Tioga Township, Tioga County assessment list, one of only two townships in existence at that date, and the first assessment list known to be in existence, with 50 acres and 1 cow. James Boylian appears on a special assessment of Tioga and Delmar Townships, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, dated 7 Oct 1814 when it was submitted to the commissioners of Tioga County. This was a special tax enumeration of the two townships that existed in the entire County at that date. James was listed as age 33, farmer. James appears on the first assessment list of Jackson Township, Tioga County (Rutland Township had not yet been created) with the notation “living in Bradford County.” James does not appear on the 1817 Jackson Township assessment list. Enumerated in Elmira, Tioga County (that portion that became Chemung County), New York in 1820 with two males under age ten (b. 1811-20), one male of age sixteen and under age eighteen (b. 1802-04), one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1795-1804), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94), three females under age ten (b. 1811-20), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94). BUDD
John Budd is related to have been b. 8 Jan 1760 (DAR Patriot Index), but in his own pension deposition and in the 1840 census enumeration he was b. c. 1762-63. John served in the Revolutionary War in Dutchess County, New York, m. Mary Russell b. c. 1775 (pension deposition) or c. 1778 (ts). Enumerated in Tioga Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1810 with three males under age ten (b. 1801-10), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84). The columns for female members of the household of age ten and under age sixteen, and sixteen and under age twenty six are not legible for the 1810 census so the females within the household in that age group are unknown. John appears on the Tioga Township assessment list of 1812, one of two townships in existence at the time, with two cows. John does not appear on the special assessment of Tioga and Delmar Townships submitted on 7 Oct 1814 to the County, having evidently moved the short distance of a few miles into Columbia Township, Bradford County. Enumerated in Columbia Township in 1820 with one male of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1805-10), one male of age sixteen and under age eighteen (b. 1802-04), one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1795-1804), one male of age forty five and over (b. before 1775), one female under age ten (b. 1811-20), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1805-10), and one female of age forty five and over (b. before 1775). Enumerated in Columbia Township in 1830 with one male of age twenty and under age thirty (b. 1801-10), one male of age fifty and under age sixty (b. 1771-80), one female of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), and one female of age fifty and under age sixty (b. 1771-80). His record of service is given in his affidavit for a pensions as follows: "That he the said John Budd, aged 67 years, resident in Columbia township, doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary war, enlisting as a private at Crampon, Dutchess county, N.Y., 1779, in Captain Post's company of infantry in Colonel Shepard's regiment and General Glover's brigade of the Massachusetts line; that he continued to serve in said regiment for the term of one year when he was honorably discharged at Peekskill, N.Y.; that he also served occasionally in the militia and was in the battle of White Plains and at the taking of Fort Montgomery; trade and occupation has been that of a carpenter but has been unable to work for several years by reason of rheumatism; family consists of himself and wife, aged 55 years, who has unusual health." Enumerated in Columbia Township in 1840 as a pensioner, age 77. Mary d. 22 Dec 1841 63y (ts) Morgan Cemetery, Austinville, Columbia Township. John is related to have d. 19 June 1845 83y and buried on land near his residence, which was a knoll on the east side of Lodge Hill Road near Sopertown Road. If this did occur, no evidence of the burial now remains. John d. less than four years after the death of his wife who has a marker in the Morgan Cemetery so it would seem more likely that he was buried with his wife. There is no indication that there were any other family burials on the farm and other family members were buried in the newer cemetery created at Baptist Hill not far from the family residence. Since he has no marker it may have only been assumed in earlier times that he was buried on the family farm. The farm where John and Mary resided passed to son Albion, which passed to his son Louden.

Josephus d. 4 Apr 1845 46y 2m 6d (ts) Clark Burying Ground. Estate probated 28 May 1845 (Docket A-2 p. 185 no. 117), administrator, Orinda Clark. Amos Mansfield was named guardian of minor children Byron, Helen M., and William W (Docket B2 p. 479). Orinda survived Josephus but when she died is not known. Orinda’s marker has disintegrated and is no longer legible. Her name on the marker was visible in 1980 and it is known she died in March or May as the first letter “M” was visible. She was perhaps deceased before 1850 as she is not found enumerated on the 1850 census. The estate of William Rose who d. 10 May 1852 Rutland named among the heirs “Josephus Clark grandchildren” indicating Orinda was deceased by that date. On 25 Feb 1852 Julia A Clark of Rutland sold (Liber 22:593) to Byron Clark of Troy, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, one seventh equal undivided part of the farm on which Josephus Clark, deceased, resided. This indicates that Julia was one of the seven living children of Josephus and Orinda.
There would appear to be a son b. 1821-25 on both the 1830 and 1840 census enumerations but his identity does not seem to be known. The obituary of daughter Laura below states she was – “born, May 18, 1824. She was the eldest of a family of eleven children.” The dates of birth for the older children below cannot be correct as some conflict, but they are here given.

The sad event of the death of Mrs. Laura M. Strait occurred at the residence of L. R. Gleason, Esq. in this village on the morning of July 3d. Mrs. Strait had just completed her arrangements and was waiting to take the next train to accompany her daughter to her new home in Pueblo, Col., when she was taken suddenly ill and took instead, that long journey to that land “from which no traveler returns.” She was the daughter of Josephus Clark, who emigrated in an early day to this state from Mass., and was one of the pioneer settlers of Tioga county, having settled in Rutland where the subject of this sketch was born, May 18, 1824. She was the eldest of a family of eleven children, two, only, of which survive her, Mrs. Mary A. Corey, of Stuttgardt, Arkansas, and Mrs. Helen M. Ingraham, wife of Capt. D. P. Ingraham, of Elmira, N. Y. She was the widow of S. S. Strait, late of this place, and sister to B. W. Clark, so well and favorably known among the early business men of Canton, whose widow is now the esteemed wife of our fellow townsman, L. R. Gleason. Mrs. Strait was also a sister of the late Julia A. Humphrey, widow of Dr. A. Humphrey, formerly of Tioga county, Pa. She leaves of her own family to mourn their great loss, one son, Samuel J. Strait, living near this village, and one daughter, Mrs. D. C. Moran, now of Pueblo, Colorado, where the sympathy of her many friends follow her. Mrs. Strait was fast nearing the allotted age of man, having well entered her 68th year, and in good works was fully ripe for the harvests. She was an acceptable member of the First Baptist church of this place, having united with that society under the pastorate of the Rev. Mr. McGowen. Although a great sufferer during the few days of her illness, yet she passed away like a child going to sleep, with perfect trust in her Savior, and the sweet, beautiful expression on her countenance as she lay in her casket showed that in her heart could be malice towards none. Though strong in character she was quiet and retiring in her disposition, devoting her great energy to the welfare and happiness of her family, and as a friend remarked, “She was a blessing to any household.” In the pioneer days of our country, before the age of railroads, her father took her in his own carriage to Detroit, Mich., to give her the benefit of a more extended and liberal education than could be obtained in the then comparative wilds of Northern Penna. After her marriage to Mr. Strait they settled on a farm near Troy, and later moved to Canton, where Mr. Strait with her brother, B. W. Clark, founded the first bank established in this place, and which place has since been her home. Her friends mourn her but not without hope, for they know that all is peace beyond the river (Canton newspaper obituary).
