EARLY FAMILIES OF THE MILL CREEK VALLEY,
RUTLAND TOWNSHIP, TIOGA COUNTY,
PENNSYLVANIA

(Hakes to Pemberton)

HAKES

Beebe Hakes b. c. 1785 son of Solomon Hakes and Anna Downing was enumerated in Tioga Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1810 with one male under age ten (b. 1801-10), one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1785-94), possibly young females in the household (census illegible), and one female of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1785-94). From his near neighbors on the census it is known he was living somewhere in the vicinity of present Rutland Township, Tioga County, which borders Columbia Township in Bradford County where his parents resided. Beebe appears on the 1812 assessment list of Tioga Township, one of only two townships in existence in the county at that date, with 50 acres. Beebe returned to Columbia Township and appears on the 1820 assessment list of Columbia Township with one cow.

HARRIS

Alexander Harris b. 9 June 1783 Manchester, Bennington County, Vermont son of Alexander Harris and wife Didamia was perhaps the male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1775-84) enumerated in the household of his mother Didamia in Manchester in 1800. Enumerated in Tioga Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1810, one of only two townships created at that time, with one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84) and a female of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1785-94). The portion of the 1810 census with females under age ten and of age ten and under age sixteen is missing on the original, which may contain a daughter or daughters of Alexander. Alexander appears on the first assessment of Tioga Township, one of only two townships in existence at that date, with 1 cow. Alexander became a widower with at least three young children. His wife presumably died in what is now Rutland Township. She could possibly be buried without a marker where Alexander was later buried. Alexander m. 1814 probably in what became Jackson or Rutland Township, Saloma Daggett b. 3 July 1790 Westmoreland, New Hampshire daughter of Reuben Daggett and Esther Cobb who had settled in what became Jackson Township, Tioga County. Saloma had first m. c. 1809 near Elmira, New York, William Keyes b. c. 1790 son of Peabody Keyes and Persis Brooks who had settled at the site of what became Mosherville, Wells Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He is perhaps the William Kies found on the first assessment of Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1812 with 6 acres and 1 cow. William Keyes d. in 1813 and his marker inscribed "W. Keys 1813" is in the Mosherville Cemetery. The early histories record that Peabody Keyes was the first death of an adult, but it was his son, William. We are uninformed if William d. early in 1813 or late in 1813, only that he is related to have slipped and fell on the ice, breaking his neck, which resulted in his death. There was a special assessment of Tioga and Delmar Townships, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, dated 7 Oct 1814 when it was submitted to the commissioners of Tioga County. This was a special tax enumeration of the two townships that existed in the entire County at that date. Alexander does not appear, but there is an Ellis Harris, age 31 (Alexander would have been age 31), farmer, who is presumed to be Alexander. Ellis perhaps was written by mistake for Alex, which could sound nearly the same to an assessor. Alexander appears on the first assessment of Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1816. They resided in that portion that became Rutland Township, which had not yet been created. Alexander last appears on the 1819 assessment list (compiled fall of 1818). They removed to Vermont and were enumerated in Ferrisburg, Addison County, Vermont in 1820 with three males under age ten (b. 1811-20), one male of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1805-10), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94), two females under age ten (b. 1811-20), two females of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1805-10), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94). They returned to Rutland Township. Enumerated in Rutland in 1840 with one male of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1826-30), one male of age fifty and under age sixty (b. 1781-90), one female of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1826-30), one female of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1821-25), two females of age twenty and under age thirty (b. 1811-20), and one female of age fifty and under age sixty (b. 1781-90). Enumerated in Rutland in 1850, farmer. They resided on warrant parcel 1874. Alexander d. 28 July 1855 73y 1m 19d (ts). Administration of estate dated 5 Feb 1856, William B. Keyes, executor; wife, Selome; daughters, Julia, Ursula, Hannah, Polly, Opela, Didema, Selome; sons, Alexander and Abel M. Harris. 2.  Ursula Harris b. c. 1811 m. Horace Needham. In Biographical Sketches of Richard Ellis, the First Settler of Ashfield, Massachuetts it states – “John L. Ellis, second son of Elder Consider Ellis, was born near Ellisburg, (Potter County), Pa., Mach 19, 1833. He married Mrs. Jane A. Wilson, of Leroy, Minn., in 1862. Her maiden name was Needham. Her father Horace C. Needham, was a prominent man in Vermont. He died when Mrs. Ellis was young.” Daughter, Jane indicated her mother was born in Pennsylvania in the 1880 and 1900 census enumerations. In the 1880 census enumeration Jane indicated her father was born in Mexico. One would assume this is an error and refers to where her father died. Horace Needham enlisted 20 Apr 1847, age 35, during the War with Mexico, brown hair, sandy complexion, 5’ 8 ¼, born Shrewsbury, Vermont, enlisted at Rutland, served 9th Regiment, Company D, died 7 Nov 1847 in hospital City of Mexico. His age could not have been correct at enlistment, which would place his birth c. 1812 as he would have been only about age fifteen when he married 4 Nov 1827 Esther Briggs b. Nov 1805 and their first child was b. 21 Jan 1828. There could have been more than one Horace Needham, but the Horace Needham who m. Ursula Harris could have had a daughter Jane A. Needham b. 8 Oct 1827 and then m. 4 Nov 1827 Esther Briggs, perhaps to raise his infant daughter, if Ursula had died. Horace and Esther had eight children and she d. 14 Oct 1854. Ursula is named in the Will of her father dated 1855 but this should be consulted to see if she was named as a living heir. The Horace Needham enumerated in Shrewsbury, Rutland County, Vermont in 1830 had no children in the household. The 1840 census enumeration of Shrewsbury would match the six children of Horace and Esther.

HOUGHTON

Seth Houghton b. 1781-90 could be a son of Seth Houghton and Sarah Wheeler and b. c. 1783 Massachusetts. Seth first appears on the 1818 asessment list (compiled fall of 1819) of Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. On the 1820 assessment list, unable to pay for schooling of daughter Sally. Enumerated in Jackson in 1820 with three males under age ten (b. 1811-20), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94), one female under age ten (b. 1811-20), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94). On the 1821 assessment list unable to pay for schooling of children Sally, Augustus, and Joseph; 1822, Sally and Augustus; 1823, Sally age 9, Augustus age 7, and Seth F. age 5. Enumerated in Rutland Township in 1830 with one male of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one male of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), one male of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), one male of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90), three females under age five (b. 1826-30), one female of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one female of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-25), and one female of age thirty and under age forty (b. 1791-1800). Seth appears on the 1832 assessment list of Sullivan Township with one cow. On the 1833 Sullivan assessment list is the notation “removed.” His neighbors in the 1830 census enumeration were the Curtis and Gifford families who embraced the Mormon faith and went west and perhaps also the reason the Houghton family removed from the area.

In an address given by Ross G. Watkins at the Old Rutland Hill Church on August 16, 1942 he stated – “One item which has seemingly escaped attention was the coming of two Mormon Elders and their flock to the scene. They strewed the countryside with their propaganda and soon the excitement was intense. Then more of them came until quite a colony was formed. After a bit, some opposition arose and they, with some of the settlers who embraced their faith, moved to near Liberty, Pa, where they founded the village of Nauvoo. (Meaning the beautiful.) There, more persecution arising, they moved to Illinois and founded a city also called Nauvoo in the year 1839. During a riot in 1844, Joseph Smith, the leader and his brother were killed and the building of their temple was stopped. Then Brigham Young led them on to Utah. During their stay here it seems they occupied this farm as I remember it, they left four of their number, two adults and two children to mingle with the dust on that knoll up there. As long as George Tanner owned this farm, he kept some field stones in place to mark their final resting place and in playing around the old orchard as children, my cousin and I came upon them and were told by the old folks why they were there. What their names were or where they came from is all conjecture now but perhaps some older and abler
historian might be able to find out and if so, I would like to hear from them (History of the Old Rutland Church, Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, Ross G. Watkins, 1942).

WILLIAM HOWLAND. Upon the gentleman whose name appears above has been conferred the distinction of being the local executive or Supervisor of Lapeer Township, Lapeer County, which is one of the most important townships in the county, boasting its largest city – that of Lapeer – which is a railroad center of no inconsiderable importance. Mr. Howland is a son of Ira and Cynthia (Pemberton) Howland, the former native of Connecticut and the latter of Pennsylvania. Ira Howland was a farmer by occupation, and coming too Michigan in 1835, came too Lapeer County and Elba Township. His parents, who came at the same time, located on section 13, of Elba, and 18, of Lapeer Townships. A few years after coming here he married, and he and his wife still reside upon the old homestead in Elba Township, where they have two hundred acres of land, most of which is in an excellent state of improvement. Their farm boasts excellent buildings – a large and well-built house and four capacious barns, it being the work of himself and his sons. He is the oldest living settler in Elba Township at the present time. They are the parents of nine children, seven of whom are now living, and named as follows: Andrew J., Waty A., William, Ira W., Ellen, Adelaide and Arthur. Our subject’s oldest brother, Andrew, who is now in the meridian of life, being forty-nine years of age, was married too Elizabeth Dougherty and is living in Bay County; Ellen is the wife of Garry Trauz and lives at Hadley; Adelaide, wife of George Lyle, lives in Elba Township; Arthur married Rosa Edwards and lives at his father’s home. Ira Howland has held various local offices, having been Highway Commissioner and Justice of the Peace in Elba Township. Our subject was born December 7, 1853, in Lapeer Township, in his father’s first residence, which was on the Lapeer side of the line. He attended the district school of his neighborhood and spent one year in the High School at Lapeer. The original of our sketch remained an inmate of his father’s home until he reached his majority, and then became his father’s assistant, his father helping him pay for the farm located on section 21, Elba Township. March 14, 1875, he married too Miss Ann Stalker, a daughter of Robert and Sarah (Bramley) Stalker, both natives of Yorkshire, England. He is a farmer and came too America in 1863, settling in Lapeer County in 1865, where they now resided on section 22. They are the parents of four children, three of whom are now living – Mary, Mrs. Howland and Emily. Mary is the of John Mulholland and lives in Montana; Emily is the wife of James Perry and lives in Muskegon. Mrs. Howland was born March 14, 1855, in Yorkshire, England. She and her husband are the parents of four children, whose names are as follows; Robert, born April 24, 1879; Kate, October 7, 1880; Amy, December 31, 1886; and Edna, October 25, 1890. After marriage Mr. Howland settled upon eighty acres of wild land on section 24, Elba Township. He built two barns and made his residence in a house owned by his brother. He cleared off and improved sixty acres of land and sold out this tract in 1883, immediately after purchasing the place where he now lives. He here has one hundred and thirty acres of land, of which one hundred and ten acres are under cultivation. He has built a large barn and has made an attractive addition too his house, improving the condition of his farm by ditching and fencing. Mr. and Mrs. Howland are both members of the Baptist Church, of which our subject has been Clerk for five years past. He also has a class of fifteen young ladies in Sunday-school. He is, moreover, Secretary of the Sunday-school. Socially he is allied with the Knights of the Maccabees, of Hunter’s Creek, and belongs too the Patrons of Industry. For many years he was Secretary of the Grange. A Democrat in politics, he has held several local positions. He is now serving his second term as Supervisor of Lapeer Township, which proclaims his popularity, as the township has a Republican majority of forty votes. He has always ranged himself upon the side of temperance. Their is in the township a public library association, which has been organized by him, and of which he is the President (Lapeer County History).

LAWRENCE

Henry Lawrence is related to have settled in 1797 on Sugar Creek in what Burlington Township, Bradford County. He is perhaps the Henry Lawrence who appears on the 1796 Petition of the Connecticut Settlers to the Connecticut General Assembly so he probably settled there before 1797. Enumerated in Wysox, Luzerne County (Burlington Township and Bradford County had not yet been created) in 1800 with two males under age ten (b. 1791-1800), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1756-74), one female under age ten (b. 1791-1800), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1756-74). At a meeting of the inhabitants and settlers of Sugar-Creek Settlement (settled under the Connecticut Susquehannah Company's purchase) at the house of John Ballad, 2nd on said creek, on Aug. 10th: Nathan Fellows was chosen chairman and Nathaniel Allen, clerk of said meeting. After taking into consideration the situation of the settlers and inhabitants so as aforesaid convened, and what may be the object or views of the adverse claimants, in sending an agent, or spy amongst us. It was unanimously resolved and 4
resolutions adopted. This document was signed by the following: Henry Lawrence (Luzerne County Federalist, Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, August 20, 1803).

Henry Lawrence b. c. 1768 (1814 special assessment) appears on the 1810 census of Tioga Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, one of two townships in existence at that date with two males under age ten (b. 1801-10), three males of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1795-1800), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84), one female under age ten (b. 1801-10), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84). Jonathan Lawrence of Tioga Township, Lycoming County, conveyed (Liber 6:206) 200 acres to Lyman Adams on 23 June 1811 bounded southerly on mouth of Mill Creek and from mouth extended west, being lands owned in partnership with Henry Lawrence and with the land conveyed his one equal ½ with dwelling house, barn, shop, ½ acre of the old barn, ½ of sawmill, and all utensils. Henry appears on the 1812 assessment list of Tioga Township, one of only two townships in existence at that date, with one half of a sawmill, 150 acres, 1 horse, 2 oxen, and 1 cow. Henry appears on a special assessment of Tioga and Delmar Townships, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, dated 7 Oct 1814 when it was submitted to the commissioners of Tioga County. This was a special tax enumeration of the two townships that existed in the County at that date. Henry was listed as age 46, farmer. He appeared in the non-alphabetical list next to Jonathan Lawrence, age 24, and Benjamin Lawrence, age 28. If the ages are correct and he was the father of Benjamin he would have only been 18 years of age when Benjamin was born. After the 1814 special assessment of Tioga County, Henry appears on the 1818 assessment list of Sullivan Township. On the 1819 assessment list (compiled late fall of 1818) of Sullivan is the notation “removed.”

A Jonathan Lawrence is related to have been b. 7 Oct 1784 Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut son of Henry and Sarah Lawrence and he had a brother Benjamin Fairbanks Lawrence b. 16 Apr 1787 Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut. On the 1814 special assessment list of Tioga County, Jonathan Lawrence was age 24, placing his birth at about 1790, which does not match the above date of 1784. Benjamin Lawrence on the special assessment was age 28 and that nearly matches the date of birth of 1787. The date of birth inscribed on the marker for Benjamin Lawrence in Lawrence Corners Cemetery, Rutland Township is April 14, 1786. In the obituary of the wife of Jonathan Lawrence it states – “About the year 1840 they moved to the farm in Sullivan township subsequently owned by Nathan Palmer, where five years later, at the age of 63, Mr. Lawrence died.” This would place Jonathan’s birth at about 1782, near the date of the Coventry birth.

Henry Lawrence was enumerated in Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut in 1790 with one male of age sixteen and over (b. before 1774), two males under age sixteen (b. 1775-90), and three females in the household. There was still a Henry Lawrence enumerated in Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut in 1800 with one male of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1785-1790), one male of age forty five and over (b. before 1755), and one female of age forty five and over (b. before 1755). The only child in the household could be the son Benjamin. This Henry cannot be the Henry of Bradford and Tioga Counties.

It is thus uncertain at this time the relationship of Henry, Benjamin and Jonathan Lawrence of Tioga County.

Benjamin Lawrence 14 Apr 1786 (marker) m. Asenath Bailey b. 13 Apr 1790 (marker) Connecticut daughter of Robert Bailey and Asenath Wilson. Benjamin appears on the 1812 assessment list of Tioga Township, one of only two townships in existence at that date, with 2 oxen and 1 cow. Benjamin appears on a special assessment of Tioga and Delmar Townships, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, dated 7 Oct 1814 when it was submitted to the commissioners of Tioga County. This was a special tax enumeration of the two townships that existed in the entire County at that date. Benjamin was listed as age 28, farmer. Benjamin appears on the first assessment list of Jackson Township in 1816, which also included a portion of Rutland Township, which had not yet been created, with the notation that Benjamin was living in Covington Township. Covington Township included a much larger area than the present township, including Sullivan Township and part of present Rutland Township. Rutland Township was created from Sullivan Township and Jackson Township. Benjamin appears on the 1820 census enumeration of Sullivan Township, Tioga County (included a portion of present Rutland Township which had not yet been created) with one male under age ten (b. 1811-20), one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1795-1804), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1805-10), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94). Benjamin was enumerated beside the Bailey families in 1820, which would indicate their residence was at or near Lawrence Corners in that area that became Rutland Township formed from Sullivan Township. Benjamin appears again on the 1823 assessment list of Jackson Township. Benjamin Lawrence acquired (Liber 8:122) land in Rutland Township on 9 Oct 1828 from John Vaughn. Enumerated in Rutland Township in 1830, which had been formed in 1828 from Sullivan and Jackson Townships, with one male under age five (b. 1826-30), one male of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one male of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), one male of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90), one female of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one female of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), and one female of age thirty and under age forty (b. 1791-1800). Enumerated in Rutland Township in 1840 with one male of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1826-30), one male of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1821-25), one male of age fifty and under age sixty (b. 1781-90), one female of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1826-30), and one female of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1791-1800). Enumerated in Rutland Township in 1850, farmer. Benjamin d. 25 Aug 1855 69y 4m 11d (ts). His marker also appears on a monument with Asenath giving his full date of birth and death. Estate (Tioga County #367) of Benjamin Lawrence of Rutland dated 4 Apr 1857, citing he d. 25 Aug 1855, wife Asenath and sons William, John N., and Francis Lawrence; daughter, Asenath Lawrence. Executor, William Lawrence. Asenath enumerated in household of son William in Rutland Township in 1860. Asenath d. 28 Nov 1870 (ts) Lawrence Corners Cemetery, Rutland Township.

Jonathan Lawrence b. c. 1790 (1814 special assessment) Connecticut was enumerated in Tioga Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1810, one of only two townships in existence at that time, with one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1785-94) and a female of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1785-94). The census columns for females under age ten (b. 1801-10), and of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1795-1800), is not legible, so there could have been daughters in the household. Jonathan appears on the 1812 assessment list of Tioga Township, one of two townships in existence at that date, occupation hatter, no real estate or other property. Signed by Jonathan Lawrence. Jonathan m. 11 Feb 1812 Elizabeth Bailey, known as Betsey, b. 11 Feb 1791 Chatham, Middlesex County, Connecticut daughter of Robert Bailey and Asenath Wilson. Jonathan appears on a special assessment of Tioga and Delmar Townships, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, dated 7 Oct 1814 when it was submitted to the commissioners of Tioga County. This was a special tax enumeration of the two townships that existed in the entire County at that date. Jonathan was listed as age 24, farmer. Jonathan appears on the first assessment list of Jackson Township, which also included a portion of Rutland Township, Rutland Township having not yet been created. Jonathan continues to appear on the Jackson assessment lists through 1821 (compiled late fall of 1820) when it is noted that he has “removed.” Jonathan Lawrence conveyed (5:186) land on 29 Sept 1820 in Jackson Township (Rutland Township not yet created) to John P. Ryers of New York, along lands of Ethemiel (should have read Ithamar in the deed) Churchill and Samuel Nichols on the north, Cornelius Warn on the east, Lemuel Wood on the south and Jonathan Nichols, Jr., and Jeremiah Ray on the west. Only Jonathan signed. They removed to Columbia Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania settling at what became Sylvania where they operated a tavern. Enumerated in Columbia in 1820 with one male under age ten (b. 1811-20), one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1795-1804), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1805-10), and one female of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1795-1804). Enumerated in Columbia in 1830 with one male under age five (b. 1826-30), one male of age twenty and under age thirty (b. 1801-10), one male of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90), one female of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), and one female of age thirty and under age forty (b. 1791-1800). Enumerated in Columbia in 1840 with one male under age five (b. 1836-40), one male of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1826-30), one male of age fifty and under age sixty (b. 1781-90), and one female of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1791-1800). About 1840 they removed to neighboring Sullivan Township, Tioga County where Jonathan d. c. 1845. Betsey was enumerated in Sullivan Township in 1870 and 1880, living alone. Betsey d. Oct 1891 buried Hope Cemetery, Mansfield, Pennsylvania.

Mrs. Betsy Lawrence
Her Death at the Remarkable Age of 101 Years
Mrs. Betsy Lawrence, than whom there were few older persons living in this part of the state, died at the home of her son, C. H. Lawrence, in this boro, about 4 o'clock last Sunday morning aged 100 years, 8 months and 14 days.  Mrs. Lawrence had been confined to her bed only since Thursday of last week.  She conversed intelligently with members of the family Saturday afternoon and to all appearances, while unable longer to speak, retained control of her mental faculties to the hour of dissolution. Mrs. Lawrence was born in the State of Massachusetts, on Feb. 11, 1791. She was the youngest of ten children equally divided between the sexes, of Mr. And Mrs. Robert Bailey. When eleven years old she accompanied her oldest brother, Roswell Bailey, to this county and continued to reside with him on a farm hewn from the wilderness near the present hamlet of Dartt Settlement until, a few years later, her parents left their New England home to take up their residence on one of the Bingham estate possessions embracing the farm near the mouth of Mill Creek, subsequently known as the Joseph Guernsey place. The house in which they lived was a rough log structure, and stood between the railroad tract of today and the Tioga river. Roswell Bailey, previously mentioned as the brother with who Mrs. Lawrence came to Pennsylvania, was the father of John W. Bailey, of Wellsboro; Mrs. Philip Williams, of this boro, and Clark, Robert, Benjamin, Wilson and Rockwell Bailey and Mrs. Richard Moore, all long since deceased. Among the near neighbors of the Bailey family at Mill Creek, was Lyman Adams, father of William Adams of this boro, who conducted a general store and carried on a saw mill in the neighborhood.  From the mouth of Mill Creek, which at the time of which we write was an important business centre, the Bailey family moved to the farm in Rutland, near the mouth of Bailey creek, now owned by William Lawrence, of this boro. In 1811 or 1812 the subject of this sketch was married to Jonathan Lawrence, a native of Connecticut, who had learned the hatter's  trade in the east and for some years after coming to Pennsylvania manufactured the head gear for his fellow citizens both far and near.  Soon after their marriage Mr. And Mrs. Lawrence moved to Columbia Flats, now Sylvania, just over the county line in Bradford county. Here they lived happily for nearly a quarter of a century, for many years conducting a hotel or old-time tavern. About the year 1840 they moved to the farm in Sullivan township subsequently owned by Nathan Palmer, where five years later, at the age of 63, Mr. Lawrence died, leaving to his widowed companion the care of their three oldest children; six other children having preceded their father to the great beyond.  Those living were Caroline, (Mrs. Nathan Palmer) who died two years ago, aged 73, Herrick, who died in Mansfield in 1872, aged 47, and Mr. C. H. Lawrence, the youngest child, with who the aged lady has for several years made her home and at whose house her death occurred. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the house and the remains interred in Hope cemetery, this boro (Mansfield Advertiser, Sunday, October 21, 1891).

MILES

William Miles b. c. 1779 (1814 special assessment) appears on a special assessment of Tioga and Delmar Townships, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, dated 7 Oct 1814 when it was submitted to the commissioners of Tioga County. This was a special tax enumeration of the two townships that existed in the entire County at that date. William was listed as age 35, farmer. William resided in the portion of Tioga County that became Rutland Township in 1828. William appears on the first assessment list of Jackson Township (Rutland Township was created from Jackson and Sullivan Townships in 1828) of 1816 (compiled fall of 1815) and last appears on the 1819 assessment list (compiled fall of 1818).

NICHOLS

Jonathan Nichols was a resident of Sheffield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts when a daughter was baptized there in 1769 and he appears on the 1771 tax valuation. He had a wife Joanna. Jonathan Nichols was a private in Captain Enoch Noble’s Company, Colonel John Ashley’s Regiment, enlisting 1 August 1777, and was discharged 20 August 1777; roll certified at Sheffield. He m. 16 May 1789 Anna Slate, who was evidently Anna Huggins b. 12 May 1757 Marlboro, Berkshire County, Massachusetts daughter of Joseph Huggins and Sarah Fox, she evidently first married to a Slate. Jonathan was enumerated in Sheffield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts in 1790 with one male of age sixteen and over (b. before 1774), one male under age sixteen (b. 1775-90), and two females. Enumerated in Sheffield in 1800 with two males under age ten (b. 1791-1800), one male of age forty five and over (b. before 1755), one female under age ten (b. 1791-1800), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1785-90), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1756-74). Enumerated in Sheffield in 1810 with one male of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1795-1800), one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1785-94), one male of age forty five and over (b. before 1765), two females of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1785-94), and one female of age forty five and over (b. before 1765). By deed (Liber 53:480-81 Berkshire County, Massachusetts Registry of Deeds Southern District) dated 1 August 1815, executed in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, Jonathan Nichols, Anna Nichols, Samuel Nichols, Jonathan Nichols, Jr., and “Naasson” Nichols, sold land at Sheffield that had been deeded to “Anna Nichols and her heirs” by Joseph Huggins to Charles Keyes of Columbia Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Jonathan, Anna, and Nasin signed by mark while Samuel and Jonathan, Jr., signed by signature. The deed was witnessed by David Nichols and Josiah Woodworth. David as a witness would tend to indicate he was not a child of Anna, but the first wife of Jonathan, and that Samuel, Jonathan Jr., and Nasin were children of Jonathan and Anna. This deed and The Whitney Family of Connecticut by S. Whitney Phoenix, 1878 indicate that Anna Nichols wife of Jonathan Nichols was a Huggins. Jonathan Nichols appears on the first assessment list of 1816 of Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, in that portion that became Rutland Township that had not yet been created. Jonathan does not appear on later assessment records. He appears as Jonathan Nicholdin on the 1820 census enumeration of Jackson Township with one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94), one male of age forty five and over (b. before 1755), and one female of age forty five and over (b. before 1755). Son Samuel is known to have remained in Tioga County and it is perhaps Samuel who was the male of age twenty six and under age forty five in the 1820 household. Samuel appears on all of the early assessment records from 1816 and into the 1820’s and Jonathan does not, suggesting that Samuel was perhaps the property owner, since Jonathan was over the age of sixty when these assessment records were compiled. The Whitney Family of Connecticut indicates Jonathan and Anna removed to Wolcott, New York. This may have occurred after the early death of their son Samuel who left a widow and two small children, Jonathan and Anna’s other sons having earlier removed to New York.

Second Generation:
4.  David Nichols (Nicholas Nicholds, etc., in early records) b. 5 Mar 1777 appears on the 1810 census of Tioga Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, one of only two townships in the county at that date, as Nickolas David with his first and last name reversed on the census. Enumerated with one male under age ten (b. 1801-10), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84). There could have been daughters in the household, but the age categories of under age ten and of age ten and under age sixteen have been taped over in the past and not legible. David appears on the 1812 assessment list of Tioga Township, one of two townships in existence at that date, with 20 acres, 1 horse, and 2 cows. David appears on a special assessment of Tioga and Delmar Townships, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, dated 7 Oct 1814 when it was submitted to the commissioners of Tioga County. This was a special tax enumeration of the two townships that existed in the entire County at that date. David was listed as age 38, farmer. Solomon Wood purchased 53 acres (Liber 4:197) on 7 Nov 1814 from the Bingham Trustees, situated on warrant parcel 1373 (present Pumpkin Hill, Rutland Township) which mentions bordering lands surveyed to David Nichols, William Ford, and Ebenezer Rumsey. David appears on the first assessment of Jackson Township in 1816 as David Nicholds along with Jonathan Nicholds and Samuel Nickels. He does not appear on the assessment lists after that date. He is believed to be the David Nichols enumerated in Wolcott, Seneca County (that portion that became Wayne County), New York in 1820 with one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1795-1804), one male of age forty five and over (b. before 1775), one female under age ten (b. 1811-20), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94).

10.  son b. 1801-04.
11.  daughter b. 1811-20.

6.  Samuel Nichols b. c. 1792-94 appears on the first assessment list in 1816 of Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, which included Rutland Township, which had not yet been created. He continues to appear on assessment lists of Jackson Township. He is presumed to be the male of age twenty six and under age forty five enumerated in the household of his father Jonathan in Jackson Township in 1820. Samuel m. Lucy Ward b. 11 Jan 1797 Sandisfield, Massachusetts daughter of Seth Ward and Mary Manley. Samuel was not enumerated in Jackson in 1820, though he appeared on all the tax assessment lists throughout that time period. Their land and probably residence was mentioned in an 1820 deed (Liber 5:186) of conveyance from Jonathan Lawrence to John P. Ryers, Ethemiel (should read Ithamar in the deed) Churchill and Samuel Nichols bordering on the north of the land being transferred by Lawrence. Samuel appears on the 1825 assessment list (compiled late fall of 1824). Samuel d. after six years of marriage. Lucy m. 1832 (2)Sarlls Barrett (sometimes Searls) b. 17 May 1782 New York, served War of 1812. Sarlls first appears on the 1833 assessment list of Wells Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Enumerated in Wells in 1840 with three young sons in their household. Enumerated in Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1850. Sarlls d. 14 Sept 1864 (ts). Lucy, 1883 list of pensioners, widow of soldier, d. 12 Feb 1891 (ts) Mosherville Cemetery.

The following clipping is from the Wells correspondence of the Towanda Reporter- Journal of Jan. 22,1891. The Wm. Barrett and Mrs. Aurilla Robinson spoken of live in Jackson, near the Summit. The "Rev." used as a prefex to David Griswold's name is incorrect. One day last week your correspondent had the pleasure of an "interview" with Mrs. Lucy Barrett, who on Sunday, the 11th instant celebrated her ninety-fourth birthday. The following are a few facts gleaned from her life: Mrs. Barrett, whose maiden name was Lucy Ward, was born in Sanders Township, Berkshire County, Mass. on Jan 11, 1797, and is of a family of eleven children. Her parents were of English descent. They moved from Mass. to Smithfield township, this county, 1811, where shortly afterwards Lucy was married to Samuel Nichols, by whom she had four children, two of whom are still living, namely, Mrs. Aurilla Robinson of Tioga, Pa. and Mrs. Abraham Post of Erie County, Pa. After six years of married life she was left a widow with the care of two small children. Her parents having moved to Illinois, she shortly afterwards moved to this town where she was married to Sarlls Barrett by Rev. David Griswold in 1832, by whom she had five children, three of whom are living, namely, George Barrett of Saginaw County, Mich.; William Barrett of Tioga, Pa., and Arvine, who is one of our most respected citizens." Mrs. Barrett's last husband died in 1864 and she has since lived with her youngest son, Arvine, where she enjoys one of the pleasantest of homes and draws a pension from the war of 1812. She had upwards of thirty grandchildren, the youngest one being less than three years old and her and her great grandchildren are few. Her marvelous mental powers are still unimpaired. She has never worn glasses, and is still very vigorous for one of her age. Her life has been an eventful one. She has lived under the administration of every President from Washington to Harrison. She has seen the country rise from thirteen weak struggling colonies on the Atlantic coast to an ocean bound Republic, the most powerful Nation on earth. She was born before there was a locomotive, a mile of railroad, a cable, a telephone, a sewing machine, a mowing machine or any of the great improvements that surpass the tales of the "1,001 nights in Bagdad." When she was born, Bradford County was "out west" and she has lived to see a woman go around the earth in seventy-two days - less time than it took her father to move his family from Eastern Mass. to this county nearly eighty years ago. Her sturdy virtues and Christian fortitude carried her uncomplainingly through the privations and hard ships of frontier life. She has been a resident of Wells for the last sixty years, with the exception of two years, when she and her husband resided on Mt. Zoar, Chemung Co., N.Y. She is a great favorite in the neighborhood where she resides and it is a most enjoyable pasttime to hear her relate many interesting incidents, which transpired years ago when this country abounded with nearly all kinds of "wild animals of the forest." That she may enjoy a very long and pleasant life here, eternal happiness hereafter is the wish of all.

Mrs. Lucy Barrett - Death at an Advanced Age. Died, In Wells township, Bradford Co., Pa., Feb. 13th, at the residence of her son, A. C. Barrett, Mrs. Lucy Barrett, aged 94 years. The funeral and interment were held at Mosherville on Sunday, the 15th, and was largely attended. Rev. Dewitt, of Austinville, officiating. Deceased was the last person in the town here in the last century, and the last one drawing a pension for the war of 1812.
