The Bradford Andaste Chapter and Susquehanna River Archaeological Center
(SRAC) are co-sponsoring "The Mystery of the Blue Amulet" on Monday, June
18th at the Bradford County Library in Burlington, PA.
Deb Twigg, executive director of the Susquehanna River Archaeological
Center (SRAC,) local historian and author of SpanishHill.com will begin
the hour-long presentation at 7pm.
In 1908 a blue slate amulet was uncovered below Spanish Hill in South
Waverly, PA which was covered with strange designs and carvings. Twigg
will present the research that she has made concerning this artifact that
will take the audience hundreds of miles and thousands of years away from
Spanish Hill today. Come to the presentation and learn about the many cultures
that existed and crossed paths hundreds of years before the white man arrived
in our area, and learn about how one artifact, a little blue amulet, may
just be the evidence to finally unlock the mystery of Spanish Hill.

This presentation is free to the public.

Bradford County Historical Society Announces New Employee
Matthew T. Carl joins BCHS as Curator
Towanda, Pennsylvania (June 22, 2007) – The Bradford County Historical
Society announced the hiring of Matthew T. Carl as the new full-time Curator.
He will have the primary responsibility for exhibition planning and development,
collections management, educational programming development, and staff
supervision of the Research Library and Museum.
“We are lucky to have someone of Matt’s background and expertise come
on-board,” said J. Kelsey Jones, President of the Board of Trustees of
the Bradford County Historical Society. “We feel his knowledge and skills
will enhance our mission of research and collections.”
Carl has an extensive background in both preserving and promoting Bradford
County history. At the age of 10, he became interested in local history
as a result of a trip to the abandoned lumber town of Laquin, located on
Barclay Mountain. Throughout high school, he created local history exhibits
for display at community events and later as school projects. “That was
the beginning of a hobby,” relates Carl. After graduation the hobby of
collecting and exhibiting area history turned into a regular volunteer
effort.
In 2001, Carl organized a group of residents in LeRoy Township to form
the LeRoy Heritage Museum, and has served as president of that organization
ever since. “I noticed that we were losing our history, and decided to
do something about it,” said Carl. “With the help of several people, we
formed a board of directors and began the long process of renovating and
restoring an 1876 grange hall to become our community museum.”
Carl has also served in the past as a member of the Bradford County
Historical Society Board of Trustees. Working mostly with the Technology
Committee, he has helped update the Society’s computer systems and inventory
software program. As a result, patrons can now utilize the computers to
access online resources such as Ancestry.com
or to view digital images of historical records when they visit the
research library.
As a former board member for three years, Carl is familiar with the
issues that face the Society. “The Bradford County Historical Society has
been growing rapidly since it moved into its new home in the former Bradford
County jail. There is a lot of potential here and I feel honored to be
a part of the Society’s future,” explains Carl. Carl is planning a great
deal of reorganization, which will lead up to the time when the Society’s
complete collection will be catalogued in it’s computer inventory system.
In addition, he is planning more educational programming for the public.
The Bradford County Historical Society is located at 109 Pine Street
near Main Street. The museum is open from 10 to 4 Thursday through Saturday.
The Research Center for genealogists and historians is open from 10 to
4 Wednesday through Friday and the first Saturday of each month. The Bradford
County Historical Society offers three floors of professional exhibits
and activities presenting the history of Bradford County. Through the exhibits,
visitors can see and learn about life in Bradford County, from the early
days to the present. The museum holds artifacts on early settler's household
and farm equipment, early industrial displays, Native American artifacts,
paintings and photos, and military objects, all representing the County's
heritage. There is a replica of a log cabin and a historic mill within
the museum. The Research Center contains one of the most extensive collections
of genealogy and history in Pennsylvania. The Research Center continues
to collect family heirlooms, bibles, and other information pertaining to
the families of Bradford County. The Bradford County Historical Society
was formed in 1870 making it one of the oldest and one of the largest historical
societies in the State. For more information about the Society, visit the
website at www.bradfordhistory.com.
The Bradford County Historical Society is a recipient agency of the
Bradford County United Way.

See Also PARTITIONED search engine to search just sections
of the site. -- Below
Use the Drop Down Windowto
search selected areas of site for Obituaries and other slected information
These represent directories in the site's structure. Clipping
section includes scrapbooks of obituaries, marriages, gossip, etc. It also
includes new obits where the cemetery is not identified. The Obit by cemetery
pages are by county BUT obits may be on an obit by cemetery page OR in
the Clipping - scrapbook section. Check both. Also remember that people
are often buried in a different county than the one in which they lived
or died. Another point to be aware of is that some of the very small cemeteries
that have few obits will have the obits on the cemetery listing page. They
will be missed by this partitioned search of just the obituary directories.
They will show up on the search which covers the entire site or the burials.
If you do not click the drop down list, you will think
this is just the same form of the search engine we have had for several
years. It is NOT - It is a major enhancement of its utility which I will
develop further depending on positive feedback I do or do not get. At this
point it partitions the obituaries and cemetery listings only. While obits
are added daily, the search engine in not reindexed that frequently. Added
obituaries will only register when the search engine is reindexed.
Here is an IMPORTANT tip - If you use a DATE restriction
in your search, be aware that refers to the date I last changed a particular
page - It is a file date, NOT a date for an event.
