Ask Joyce's Cat |
See PARTITIONED search engine to search just sections
of the site. -- Below
Use the Drop Down Windowto
search selected areas of site for Obituaries and other slected information
These represent directories in the site's structure. Clipping section
includes scrapbooks of obituaries, marriages, gossip, etc. It also includes
new obits where the cemetery is not identified. The Obit by cemetery pages
are by county BUT obits may be on an obit by cemetery page OR in the Clipping
- scrapbook section. Check both. Also remember that people are often buried
in a different county than the one in which they lived or died. Another
point to be aware of is that some of the very small cemeteries that have
few obits will have the obits on the cemetery listing page. They will be
missed by this partitioned search of just the obituary directories. They
will show up on the search which covers the entire site or the burials.
If you do not click the drop down list, you will think
this is just the same form of the search engine we have had for several
years. It is NOT - It is a major enhancement of its utility which I will
develop further depending on positive feedback I do or do not get. At this
point it partitions the obituaries and cemetery listings only. While obits
are added daily, the search engine in not reindexed that frequently. Added
obituaries will only register when the search engine is reindexed.
Here is an IMPORTANT tip - If you use a DATE restriction
in your search, be aware that refers to the date I last changed a particular
page - It is a file date, NOT a date for an event.

| SRAC’s History's Mysteries at SRAC
located at 345 Broad Street in Waverly, NY.
Upcoming Events at SRAC, 345 Broad Street Waverly, NY “The Susquehanna River Expedition of 1916” by Deb Twigg will be presented at the Susquehanna River Archaeological Center (SRAC) at 345 Broad Street,Waverly, NY on Tuesday, June 2nd, from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. On May 16 1916, Warren K. Moorehead led an expedition of nine men from Lake Otsego, at the head of the Susquehanna River, central New York, and proceeded down that stream to the mouth of the river at the Chesapeake Bay. The purpose of the expedition was to record all the Indian sites along the main Susquehanna, and if possible to discover a cemetery of the Native American nation that was later annihilated by disease and the Seneca Nation, known as the “Susquehannocks” by the English and the “Andastes” by the French. Little do most locals today know that the highlight of the whole expedition was located in Athens, PA, on what was then known as the Murray Farm. This site would prove to be even more impressive then a site that was found earlier in Athens, PA, called the Murray Garden. SRAC’s executive director, Deb Twigg will share actual photos, letters, and reports from different sites in our region that the expedition visited to include the Murray Farm and what was found there. Doors open at 6pm. Admission price is $4 for Adults, and $3 for SRAC members and students. Admission price for the SRAC exhibit Hall filled with thousands of local artifacts is included. The following are upcoming events at SRAC at 345 Broad Street Waverly, NY. LIVE Raptor Show, presented by Tanglewood June 26, 2009 – 6:30pm – 7:30pm SRAC is proud to bring Tanglewood’s Raptor show to Waverly, NY. This hour-long program highlights Tanglewood’s resident raptors, Icarus, a Broad-winged Hawk, Sophie, a Great-horned Owl and Paco, a rehabbing African Gray Parrot. The program will discuss bird features, adaptations for flight and general life history. There will be a short question and answer period at the end as well as several hands-on materials. Admission: Adults $4, Students and SRAC members $3.Children under 12 free. Doors open at 6pm and admission to the exhibit hall filled with thousands of local Native American artifacts is included in the admission price. The Sullivan Campaign” by J. Arthur (Archie) Kieffer, Chemung County Historian Tuesday, July 7th , 2009 - 6:30 – 7:30pm During the Revolutionary War, General Washington under the direction of Continental Congress orders General John Sullivan to route out the British allies in this region. Ultimately this meant to engage in a campaign against the Iroquois Nation and their allies who had been raiding the frontier of New York State and Pennsylvania under the direction of the British. Starting in Athens, PA, Sullivan led 5,500 troops through our region, and decimated all of the Indian villages and crops stretching from Athens, PA to Western New York. The presentation is a must for anyone wanting to learn more about our region’s role during the Revolutionary War and the effects it had on the Native American cultures of our region. The doors will open at 6pm, with the program running from 6:30 – 7:30pm.
Admission is $4 Adults, $3 for SRAC members and students. The public is
advised that the SRAC gift shop and exhibit hall will also be open during
this time as well and to please consider arriving early to browse these
areas before the program.
“Laquin & Barclay Mountain” by Matt Carl, Bradford County Historical Society Tuesday, August 4th , 2009 - 6:30 – 7:30pm Once a thriving town on Barclay Mountain, County, Laquin was built in 1902 as a lumber town and eventually held five major factories, churches, schools, a large hotel, depot, store, restaurant, over 100 homes and many other buildings. Stretching over a mile in length, Laquin was home to approximately 1,500 people. But when the lumber was exhausted from the mountain, the buildings were dismantled and the town finally deserted in 1941. Participants will step back in time and tour the streets of Laquin using over 100 photographs, many produced from glass plate negatives. Some of the photos to be featured in this program have never been viewed by the public and were not included in Bradford County Historical Society’s 2007 book on Barclay Mountain. The doors will open at 6pm, with the program running from 6:30 – 7:30pm. Admission is $4 Adults, $3 for SRAC members and students. The public is advised that the SRAC gift shop and exhibit hall will also be open during this time as well and to please consider arriving early to browse these areas before the program.
