ARCHAEOLOGY MEETING - The Andastes Chapter of Pennsylvania Archaeology and the Susquehanna River Archaeology Center (SRAC) will have a combined meeting at the SRAC Museum. 345 Broad St. Waverly, NY, on Monday, October 19, at 6:30pm. Dr. Mike Jacobson, from the Office of Public Archaeology, SUNY Binghamton, NY, will do a slide presentation of the Chemung-Newtown area. Dr. Jacobson is the leader of a group of archaeologists working with a grant from the National Park Service, working on surveys, maps and studying the area of Sullivan's March. The speaker has worked on excavations in New York State and several other states in the southwest.

The museum will be open at 6 p.m. so the public may enjoy the huge display of American Indian artifacts. Local collectors are encouraged to bring artifacts, especially from the Chemung River area. Admission is free. For information, call Ted Keir at 570-888-2718.

In addition to free admission to the museum, archivist Rachel Dworkin and curator Casey Lewis will lead behind-the-scenes tours of CVHM at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.  Each tour will last about forty-five minutes. 

Thursday, October 1 @ 7:00 PM: Women of Park Church – Since its founding in 1846, women have played an integral role in Park Church.  Discover the lives of Julia Beecher, Annis Ford Eastman, and other women of Park Church.  The program is free and open to the public.

Thursday, October 8 @ 7:00 PM: Elmira College – Known as “the mother of women’s colleges,” Elmira College was founded in 1855.  Join Mark Woodhouse, Elmira College archivist, as he explores the history of Elmira College. The program is free and open to the public. 

Thursday, October 15 @ 7:00 PM: Never Done: Women and Work in Chemung County, 1880-1920 – Join archivist Rachel Dworkin, curator Casey Lewis, and education coordinator Kerry Lippincott as they discuss CVHM’s newest exhibit Never Done: Women and Work in Chemung County, 1880-1920. The program is free and open to the public. 

Saturday, October  17@ 6:00 to 8:00 PM - Sixth Annual Reds, Whites and Blues Wine Tasting and Silent Auction - This major fundraiser for CVHM is sure to be “the Event of the Fall.”  We will feature an interesting selection of wines, many “must have” silent auction items, and incredible live music supplied by blues guitarist Gerard Burke.  Tickets are $30.00 per person and can be purchased at the Museum or from a Trustee. Thursday, October 22 @ 7:00 PM:  St. Joseph’s Hospital and Nursing School – Founded by an order of nuns, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Nursing School opened in 1908.  Maggie Lagonegro, graduate and former teacher of the St. Joseph’s Nursing School, will trace the history of St. Joseph’s Hospital and Nursing School. The program is free and open to the public 

Friday, October  23 and Saturday, October 24: Ghost Walk - Join CVHM,  in partnership with Elmira Little Theater and Friends of Woodlawn Cemetery, as they explore the after-lives of some of Woodlawn Cemetery’s tenants. Guests will be transported by trolley from the museum  to Woodlawn Cemetery, where they will be led on a guided tour and hear stories about Elmira’s past as told by the “ghosts” who haunt the cemetery. Guests will then return to the museum via trolley.  The doors open at 6:00 p.m. and tours begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 per person.  Advance reservations  and payment  are required.

Saturday, November 21 at 10:30 am - T is for Thanksgiving  - Come and hear stories about Thanksgiving.  After the stories, create miniature turkeys and Thankfulness books.  Families will enjoy this story hour with an historical twist.  This one-hour program is free and open to the public. 

Saturday, November 21 at 6:30 pm – Musician’s Choice Concert  - As part of the Musician’s Choice Chamber Music Series, the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes (OSFL) and CVHM will host a wine tasting and concert at the museum. The concert will highlight Tyler Ogilvie, OSFL’s principal French Hornist.  Wine tasting begins at 6:30 p.m. and the concert will start at 7:30 p.m.  The concert will last approximately two hours. Monday, November 30 – Opening of Holiday Exhibits - To encourage people, particularly families, to visit CVHM during the holiday season, the museum is hosting Tis the Season at the Museum.  As part of Tis the Season at the Museum,  three exhibits  will be on display.  The exhibits include Festival of Trees  (Christmas trees decorated by area museums and historical societies located throughout the museum), Greetings from the Past: A Selection of Greeting Cards from the Booth Library Collection (Education Room) and All I Want For Christmas (a toy exhibit located in the Howell Extension). The exhibits will be open through December 30. Tis the Season at the Museum was funded, in part, by the Junior League of Greater Elmira-Corning. 

The Bradford County Historical Society will host a free program entitled “Alive to the Call: Women and History in Northeastern Pennsylvania” scheduled for October 16, 2009 at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Although the event is free, participants are asked to register by calling 570-265-2240 or by email at info@bradfordhistory.com.
The program will be presented by Josephine Dunn, Ph.D., associate professor of art history at The University of Scranton.
The history of northeastern Pennsylvania often is presented primarily as the saga of coal and railroads. But, it also is the story of women who built communities through civic and philanthropic engagements – unconventional women who lived extraordinary lives. “Alive to the Call” is the story of some of the region’s more redoubtable women: from Belinda Mulrooney (Queen of the Klondike), to Lucy Ann Lobdell (Female Hunter of the Delaware Valley), to the dashing and unconventional Cornelia Pinchot. The program will be illustrated with slides.Since 1995, through research of women artists in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Dunn has been studying women and history in this region, specifically women active from the 1880s forward in the counties of Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Wayne, Bradford, and Susquehanna. Currently she is engaged by three research projects: the life and career of Cornelia Bryce Pinchot of Pike County; Louise Welles Murray of Bradford County; and the women of the Century Club of Scranton, 1911-35.The event will be held in the Great Room at the Bradford County Historical Society, located at 109 Pine Street, Towanda, PA. Free refreshments will be provided.This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and its “We the People” initiative.  The Pennsylvania Humanities Council, a nonprofit organization, inspires individuals to enjoy and share a life of learning. The Bradford County Historical Society is coming to the Rialto Theatre in Canton to present the program, "Laquin: Behind the Photos," on November 7, 2009 at 1 p.m. Admission of $6.00 per person will be charged at the door. No tickets will be sold in advance. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will be used to cover the cost of bringing the program to Canton and will also be used to support special projects at the Bradford County Historical Society.

"Laquin: Behind the Photos" is a unique program that takes the audience on a tour of the lumber town of Laquin, located on Barclay Mountain in Bradford County. Using over 100 images which are supplemented by maps, the program makes it possible for the audience to learn about the history of the town by actually seeing its buildings, factories, and people. Each photograph in the program is described during the presentation to allow participants to understand what they are viewing.

Many of the images were made from glass plate negatives in the Historical Society collection. In addition, the program will also feature photographs that have been received by the society since the publication of the book, "Barclay Mountain - A History," in 2007. Many of these photos have never been in a public display.

"If you have an interest in Barclay Mountain, and especially Laquin, don't miss this event," said Matthew Carl, Managing Curator at the Bradford County Historical Society, who developed the program. Carl is very familiar with the topic, having led walking tours on Barclay Mountain for the past four years. He also designed the Barclay Mountain book, and among other contributions, chose the photographs that would be published.

Copies of the book, "Barclay Mountain - A History," that have been signed by the authors and designer will be on sale in the theatre lobby during the event. This will be an excellent time to pick up a copy for Christmas! 

This program was presented in Waverly in August and was standing room only.Plan accordingly to ensure a seat at this event!

2009 BRADFORD COUNTY EXTENSION ANNUAL MEETING & GUIDED NATURAL GAS TOUR 

The 2009 Bradford county Extension Annual Meeting will be held Saturday, October 31, 2009, beginning with registration at 10:45 AM at the Bradford County 4-H Building, Alparon Park, Troy, Pa.

This year’s program will be unique in that it will include a guided natural gas industry bus tour. Tom Murphy, well known Penn State Extension Marcellus Shale Educator and Janice Lobdell, Community Relations Supervisor for Fortuna Energy will be our guides. 

The agenda for the annual meeting follows:

10:45 AM – Registration at the 4-H Building

11:00 AM – 11:30 AM – Update on our local natural gas industry to date –

11:30 – 1:00 PM – Bus Tour to include sites around the Troy and Canton area giving an overview of well pad construction and drill site, pipeline construction, compression station, and other related infrastructure.

1:00 -1:30 PM – Lunch and short business meeting at the Bradford County 4-H Building

The public is invited to attend. Due to the bus tour, space is limited to the first 45 people who register. Cost is $12 per person which includes lunch and the bus trip.
