| Reading a series of obituaries from a single
cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational
history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular
time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives
and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade"
or business.
All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. EDWARDS –CECELIA C. – Mrs. Nelson Wolf died in Columbia Township, Bradford County, December 22, 1880 in the 63d year of her age, wife of Mr. Nelson Wolf, to whom she had been married 42 years and by whom she had five children, three of whom survive her and are married. She left also two grandchildren. Her funeral was largely attended on the 26th at the Presbyterian Church of Aspinwall and was conducted by the Rev. Joel Jones, her former pastor and intimate friend for thirty years and Rev. A. G. Harned, her late pastor, who chose for his text, Psalms 127.2-”So he giveth his beloved sleep.” She had been an acute and constant sufferer for many years, but bore up with wonderful patience and cheerfulness and died surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Her husband has sustained an irreparable loss. The 31st chapter of Proverbs was read as strikingly appropriate, with the remark that to this description of a virtuous woman, she added the higher virtues of the Christian. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also and praiseth her. She early professed the Christian religion and united with the Presbyterian church of Aspinwall of which her husband is honored deacon. No one was more respected in the community and by the ministers of every Evangelical denomination, who were always welcomed to her house and table. She had no enemies for she made none and her memory will long be cherished with respect and affection. (Buried Coryland Cemetery, Wells Twp., Bradford Co., PA)

UPDYKE - Mrs. John J. Ayres, formerly Flora L. Updike, of this place died at her home at Coryland about one o'clock on Wednesday afternoon of last week, aged thirty-three years. Her illness was of just six weeks duration, and of intense suffering which she bore with true christian fortitude, resigning herself to the will of Almighty God. The cause of her death was a complication of diseases which baffled the skill of many eminent physicians. Deceased was always of a pure Christian character and became untied unto the dictates of the Baptist faith many years ago, which she lovingly embraced to the last. The funeral occurred at eleven o'clock Friday forenoon at the Coryland church, and the sacred edifice was filled to its utmost capacity with sorrowing friends and relatives. Rev. Fisher Wilson, of Baptist Hill, officiated and paid a glowing tribute to the exemplary christian life of the deceased. The pall-bearers were Tim Gustin, Ed. Warner, Edson West, William Henry Jewell, Wilmot Gordon and Elisha Moore. Deceased leaves a kind husband, John Ayres, of Coryland; a devoted mother, Mrs. Phoebe Updike, of this place; one sister, Mrs. Lyda Sisson, of Armenia, Pa., and three brothers, John F. and Lincoln A. Updike of this place, and Clark A. Updike of Armenia, besides a large circle of acquaintances to mourn her untimely demise. The remains were tenderly laid at rest in the Coryland cemetery.
