| Reading a series of obituaries from a single
cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational
history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular
time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives
and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade"
or business.
All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. He had held many offices of trust in this village. He was a charter member of the C. E. Coffey Hose Company and an exempt fireman and a Baptized member of Christ Episcopal Church. DEWEY, ANDREW J.
passed away at his home on Doty Hill, in 1907, where he was
born and has always resided, on Saturday, Feb 6, at the advanced age of
73 years, 8 months. His illness was caused primarily by a fall received
last July and he was not able to do a days work from that time. He
was thrown from a load of hay and striking on his back injured his spine
and heart. He showed great patience and fortitude all through his
long illness although suffering constantly. The disease developed
into dropsy which finally caused his death, coming very suddenly at the
last. The funeral services were held at the Wellsburg Baptist Church
Tuesday at 2:30 pm. Rev. T.W. Carter, his pastor, officiating.
The pastor gave a very comforting sermon and spoke of the many estimable
qualities of the deceased. Mr. Dewey was one of the oldest members
of that church having been a member for over 52 years and in his younger
days he was leader of the choir. The pastor also spoke of Mr. Dewey
helping with his own hands to remodel and enlarge the church. The
choir sang during the service, "Nearer lay God to Thee" and "Safe in the
Arms of Jesus." The latter piece Mr. Dewey tried to sing many times
during his late illness, although so sick and weak. The day before
he died he said "The Gate is not quite open yet," and we believe he had
a glimpse into the Heavenly Home awaiting the children of God. Interment
was in Mountain View cemetery. Besides his wife he leaves three daughters,
Mrs. D.S. Parsons of Ansonia, Conn., the Misses Cora I. and Mamie E. who
reside at home and one son, Floyd H. He also leaves one sister, Mrs.
Eliza Callan of Arcadia, Neb., two grandchildren and one great grandchild.
They lose a kind and loving husband and father but their loss is his gain.
They have the sympathy of all their friends and neighbors in their bereavement.
