Joyce's Search Tip - January 2008

Do You Know that you can search just the Obituaries on the site by using the three County Specific Obituary selections in the Partitioned search engine at the bottom of the Current What's New Page? You can narrow your search by including a key word in the cemetery name or a township name in addition to the surname you search. Then select the Find All Words option.
You'll also find obituary and other newspaper clippings using Clippings partition. Additional clippings can be found in the Birth, Marriage, and some other partitions.
Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business.

All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and  for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. Tice (JoyceTice@aol.com)

SAYRE, HERBERT
aged 19 years, a son of Mrs. Perry Sayre of Wellsburg, died at the Arnot-Ogden Hospital at 8 o'clock yesterday morning, Jan or June 14, 1918, as the result  of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 10:30 o'clock.  Despondency caused by continued ill health was the cause of his rash act. The unfortunate young man on Monday evening had loaded a shotgun and then leaving his home shortly after 10 o'clock went to a field in the rear of a blacksmith shop not far from his home and lying on the ground placed the gun in a position near his body and discharged it, the contents entering his abdomen.  He was discovered by his brother, Harold Sayre, at 12:30 am who had started to search for him when he returned home shortly before midnight.  The wounded man was conscious at the time and in response to his brother's shouts had directed him to where he was. Dr. D.G. Smith, of Wellsburg, was hastily summoned and after administering first aid rushed the dying man in an automobile to the Arnot-Ogden Hospital, where he was given every attention but to no avail.  The member of his family were at his bedside when he passed away. Besides his widowed mother, Mrs. Perry Sayre, the young man is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Maude Webster of this city, whose husband is in the service; Mrs. Mark C. Burnham of lower Maple avenue; three brothers, Melvin Sayre of Wellsburg, Herbert Sayre of Philadelphia and Everett Sayre, in the service "somewhere in France."  He was a grandson of E.B. Hewitt. The funeral will be held from the family residence Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and at 3 o'clock from the Episcopal Church.  Interment will be made in the Wellsburg Cemetery.

SAYRE, OLIVER-EVERITT
Horrors of War Brought Home to Village by Report From Washington Department. The entire village of Wellsburg mourns and extends sympathy and will try to help and comfort the mother of Oliver Everitt Sayre, who has given his life that America may remain free.  Of the three sons, on whom this widow was largely dependent, two are now dead and the third is in the National Army. Everitt Sayre went in the draft contingent in February last.  Another brother died at home only a short time ago. Everitt Sayre was popular among his associates. He had been employed as a clerk in the city office of Elmira, Corning & Waverly Railroad until last February, when he went to Camp Upton.  He was assigned to the 307th Machine Gun Company, which reached France in March.  There he was trained.  Several days ago his mother at Wellsburg received from him a letter dated "Somewhere in France, June 23, 1918."  In the communication he implied that he was about to get into the real fighting.  The message to his relatives last night merely stated that he had been killed June 27, indicated his experience at the front was brief. Besides his mother, the deceased is survived by two brothers, Harold and Melvin Sayre, also two sisters, Mrs. Mark Burnham, of Wellsburg, and Mrs. Miles Webster, of Elmira.  He was a member of the Episcopal church of his home town.  It is likely the rector of that parish will arrange memorial services for the deceased.  Burial in Ashland Cemetery, June 15, 1921.

LAST WELLS OF WELLSBURG JOINS THE GREAT MAJORITY
(Handwritten 1907)
Grandparents of James Henry Wells, Who Died Yesterday, Brought Their Childrena nd Belongings to Wellsburg up Chemung River in Canoes—The Sturdy Family Gave Village Its Name.
(Special to the Star-Gazette). Wellsburg, Nov., 7. – James Henry Wells, one of Wellsburg’s oldest and most esteemed citiens, died at the home of A. B. Bevens of Main street at 6 o’clock Wednesday evening, after a lingering illness. Mr. Wells was born in this place in the year 1838, his parents being the late Colonel Henry Case Wells, Jr., and Hannah Smith Wells, who were among the first founders of this village.  His grandparents, the late Henry C. Wells and his wife, brought their children and few belongings to what is now the village of Wellsburg in canoes up the Chemung River from the state of Delaware, the early residence.  From them the village obtained its present name.  James Henry Wells was the last of the name living in this vicinity. At an early age he embarked in the grocery business in the building on the site of the Park Hotel on Front street.  He continued in that business for many years, afterwards converting his residence and store into a hotel, known to travelers as the Part Hotel, with which institution he was identified up to within a few months of his death. As a genial host he was known far and wide, and many will always remember the kindly, courtesies tendered them while guests of his hostelry.  Still more dearly will his friends and neighbors in this place miss him, for he was ever willing to do a good turn for others. Since the death of his wife, on July 4 last, he has constantly failed in health until the end came yesterday.  He left no survivors, he being the last of the family. The funeral will be held from the home of A. S. Bevens on Main street, Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock.  The Rev. Charles McKnight, rector of Trinity Church in Elmira, will officiate and the interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
