| Reading a series of obituaries from a single
cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational
history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular
time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives
and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade"
or business.
All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. In Loving Memory of SALTUS, Earl
Of Van Etten, NY, On August 26, 1918, Joseph and Alva Saltus were blessed
with a son, Earl Raymond Saltus. After almost 90 years, on June 12, 2008,
at home surrounded by loved ones, Earl left this earth to be with our Lord.
While here, his passion for learning and appreciation for life was apparent
in all that he did. Many of us that knew him had no idea of his many talents.
Starting as a boy, it began as he sat alongside his mother making quilts.
This instilled in him the knowledge of quality handcrafted items. He went
on to use this knowledge in woodworking, boat making, engraving, jewelry
making, taxidermy work, and oil painting. He worked for Bradley Farms until
his graduation from South Side High in 1937, and then went to Sodus Point,
NY, and found work at Jackson Perkins Rose Gardens. These jobs prompted
him to later build and run a greenhouse of his own. Returning to Elmira,
Earl married (1940) Beatrice Russell and had two children, Jayne and Ronnie.
He worked for Remington Rand (1939-1961) with a three-year interruption
for WWII. From 1943-1946, Earl was in the Army and worked in Air Intelligent
in Washington, DC, in the Pentagon. There he did research and wrote manuals
on captured Japanese aircraft. He also received a pilots license in 1951.
In 1957, Earl married Dorothy Strong/Flood (deceased 1996), and she had
two children, Sandra and Maylon Flood. They bought a farm, moved to Van
Etten, NY, built a house, and he began a career in barbering. He worked
from 1966-1980 at Cornell University. Earl liked traveling and new adventures,
so he learned to scuba dive, went treasure hunting, panned for gold, and
enjoyed photography, hunting and fishing. He went to the Horseheads Post
Office, becoming a rural carrier (1972-1985). To him, retirement was just
more time to pursue new things, and that is just what he did. Earl and
his new bride, Mildred Kirton purchased a place in Hobe Sound, FL, to winter
when they married in 1997. This was the place Earl always referred to as
Paradise! Earl is survived by his loving wife, Mildred Saltus, Van Etten,
NY/Hobe Sound, FL; children, Jayne (Martin) Bernhardt, Clifton, NJ, and
Ronald (Kaye) Saltus, Cross Plains, TX; stepchildren, Sandra (Tom) Holleran,
Las Vegas, NV, Maylon Flood, Newfield, NY, Roger Kirton, Elmira, NY, Kristine
Grosso, Fayettville, NY, and James (Nancy) Kirton, Bowling Green, KY; grandchildren,
Randy (Carolyn) Bernhardt, Gary (Jennie) Bernhardt, Mary Heller, Art (Kim)
Saltus, Andy (Christi) Saltus, Jessica Milford, Jaclyn and JoAnna Grosso,
Ashley, Amanda and Brett Kirton; many great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild;
sisters, Eileen (Al) Jennings, Pine City, NY, Lucille Sayles, Pine City,
NY; brother, Donald Saltus, Elmira, NY; many nieces and nephews. Many thanks
to Earl's loving caregivers and Southern Tier Hospice. Calling hours will
be Sunday, June 13, 2008, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Allen-Manzer Funeral Home,
Spencer, NY. Funeral at 3:00 p.m. with committal following at Canfield
Cemetery, Van Etten, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to Southern
Tier Hospice. Published in the Star-Gazette on 6/14/2008.
