Muffler eyed in fatal I-86 fire- Mother was returning to Savona after
4-week-old's first checkup.
By Larry Wilson - Star-Gazette Corning Bureau
Investigators believe holes in the top of a muffler ignited the floorboard
and interior of a vehicle on Interstate 86 in the town of Erwin on Tuesday,
killing a 4-week-old infant and her 18-month-old sister. The infant,
Sinaya Beam, and her sister, 18-month-old Izzybella Beam, both died in
a fire that broke out in the back seat area of the 1999 Kia Sportage driven
by their mother, 25-year-old Melissa Johns of Savona. Johns was driving
home from Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, where the infant had her first checkup
Tuesday, family members said. State Police Investigator Chris Wilkinson
said investigators think the fire started when welded spots on the top
of the muffler eroded, allowing hot exhaust gases to escape, burn through
the floorboard and ignite the interior of the car. "That coincides
with witness accounts that said the fire was behind the driver's seat,"
Wilkinson said. "It's hard to get any information from the mother because
she's so distraught." Wilkinson said diaper bags and other items
in the back seat caught fire as the flames spread. The source of
the blaze was determined after investigators disassembled the muffler at
Crane's Towing Inc. on Addison Road in Painted Post, Wilkinson said.
The couple bought the vehicle three weeks ago and had no problems with
it until the fire, said William E. Beam Sr. of Elmira Heights, the children's
grandfather. Beam's wife, Diane Sawyer Beam, said the vehicle was purchased
from a private person and inspected following the transaction. The
father of the children is William E. Beam Jr. The family moved from the
Elmira area to Savona on Aug. 1 to rent a house with the option to buy
it, said Diane Beam. The children's parents both graduated from Edison
High School in Elmira Heights and had been together for eight years, William
E. Beam Sr. said. Both parents are staying temporarily with William and
Diane Beam. They declined to speak to a reporter Wednesday. "She (Melissa)
just keeps repeating, 'My beautiful babies, my beautiful babies,'" William
E. Beam Sr. said. "They are both in deep shock. Everybody is." To
add to their grief, the family's pet English bulldog died four days before
the fatal fire, Diane Beam said. The couple's third child, Daymion, 4,
was with his father at the time of the fatal fire. "He wanted to draw pictures
for his sisters," Diane Beam said Wednesday. Melissa Johns worked
at Aloha Tan in Elmira Heights. Her husband is a self-employed contractor.
The fire started in the back seat area of the vehicle shortly before 5:30
p.m. Tuesday as Johns drove west between Exit 43 (Painted Post) and Exit
42 (Coopers Plains). Police said she pulled off on the south shoulder of
the road and stopped in an effort to get the children out. As she was trying
to remove them, the vehicle erupted in flames. A passer-by may have pulled
her away from the flaming car in which the children died, William E. Beam
Sr. said. "She was just two exits from home," he said. Traffic
was detoured from the westbound lanes of I-86 for approximately three hours,
state police said. Fire departments from Painted Post, Coopers Plains and
Campbell responded to the accident, along with Painted Post Village Police
and the state Department of Transportation. The fire investigation is being
handled jointly by state police and the Steuben County Fire Investigation
Team. The bodies of the children were taken to the Monroe County Medical
Examiner's Office in Rochester for autopsies. Barrett Funeral Home in Elmira
is handling funeral arrangements.
