| Reading a series of obituaries from a single
cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational
history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular
time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives
and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade"
or business.
All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. BRADHOFT - Friday Jan 22., 1954 Horton May Be First in County To Die In Chair at Sing Sing By James W. O'Hara Jr. If the death penalty to be imposed on Norman L. Horton is carried out, the 19-yr-old Elmiran will be the first Chemung County resident to die in the electric chair. About 30 years ago a defendant in a local first degree murder case was sentenced to death but later the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by Gov. Alfred E. Smith. The last time the death penalty was carried out as the result of a Chemung County trial was in 1882. Norman Wheelock of Prattsburg was the last area resident to die in the electric chair. Wheelock was arrested in September of 1939 in Steuben County for the murder of 13-year-old Evelyn Reed of Penn Yan. The defendant denied guilt on the grounds of insanity, a plea similar to that interposed by Horton, but was found guilty in November of 1939 by a jury at Hornell. He subsequently was executed in the death chamber at Sing Sing Prison. The Elmiran found guilty of first degree murder in the 1920's was Andrew Di Carlo, who was accused of fatally shooting Wylie Hughes on Baldwin St. A supreme Court jury here found the defendant guilty as charged and the death sentence was invoked by the court before the Governor granted the commutation. Atty. Michael O'Connor, the widely known defense attorney at that time, defended Di Carlo in the trial. Di Carlo died in prison while serving the life term.
3 Hanged Here Records show that three men were hanged in Chemung County in the late 1800's after being found guilty of murder. The first was Henry Gardner, a soldier of the 12th United States Infantry, who was hanged in the local jail yard on Mar. 1, 1867. It was the first execution here or a capital offense since 1730 when an Indian chief had his head cut off and stuck on a pole as the result of a murder. Gardner, who was stationed at the old Pickaways Barracks in Southport, used the butt of his gun to slay Amasa Mullock, the motive being robbery. His hanging was described at the time as "bungled, horrible and revolting" as the body had to be dropped through the trap three times. The Gardner case was unusual in another aspect as after his death the body was mummified and embalmed and turned over to Dr. P. H. Flood, a local physician, who kept it for may years in a glass case in his office. Eventually the body was moved to the cellar of the Flood residence and then to a barn. One night a group of boys found the body, dragged it away and placed it in a vault at a brewery a the foot of E. Water St. Corpse Burned The Group of boys then burned the corpse and when the charred remains were found there was considerable conjecture on the identity of the "murder victim." However, it was finally established that the corpse was that of Gardner and the investigation ceased.
In 1877 a man named Peter H. Penwell was hanged in the Chemung County court yard for the murder of his wife. A man of over 60 years of age, Penwell claimed to have committed the crime in a jealous rage. The last Chemung County hanging listed in available records was on Jan 6, 1882. On that date Joseph Abbott, an Elmira Reformatory inmate, paid with his life for the murder of another prisoner, George Reed. There have been two other death penalty cases involving Chemung County but the hanging took place in Binghamton. A defendant named Ruloff of Binghamton was tried and convicted in Chemung County in 1876 and later was hanged at Binghamton. The most recent, and one of the most celebrated murder cases in Western New York State history, involved William Menken. In 1884, the former Reformatory inmate, a resident of Long Island, lured a German girl named Mary Bradhoft to the Bancroft Rd. vicinity and murdered her. The Body Found In Ice The body was found encased in ice beneath a bridge on the road which runs from Carr's Corners to near the Reformatory. Menken brought the woman to Elmira on a promise to marry her and then killed her for money and jewelry. Menken was arrested shortly after the body was discovered by two young hunters. Following a four-day trial in Chemung County, he was convicted and sentenced to die. However, Justice William Murray granted a new trial on the grounds of new evidence and a belief that a fair trial could not be had here because of prejudice. A second trial was held in Binghamton, ending with the conviction and hanging of Menken in Broome County. The Bradhoft woman is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery not far from the spot where her body was found.
The most recent first degree murder case in Chemung County was in 1949 when 66-year old Thomas D. Sloniger was charged with the shotgun slaying of Fred L. Hagar, a Lake Rd. service station operator. Sloniger entered a defense of innocent by reason of insanity. Plans were made for a trial in April of 1949 and a panel of 200 prospective jurors was drawn. However, Sloniger was then examined by psychiatrists, who determined that he was not mentally capable of defending himself. Sloniger was committed to the Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, where he remains today. Turnkey Slain The most recent local first degree murder trial was in 1938 when Robert and James Buck were charged with killing Harry M. Swartz, a turnkey at the County Jail. The youths, who were 21 and 22 at the time, fatally injured Swartz in a jail break. They were convicted of first degree murder by a jury which recommended clemency. The late Supreme Court Justice Ely W. Personius sentenced the brothers to jail for the rest of their natural lives. A clemency recommendation was permitted in the Buck case as they were charged with murder committed in the process of committing another felony, that of escaping from jail. The charge against Norman Horton was that the murder of his father, Ray. E. Horton, was premeditated. The death penalty is automatic when a premeditated murder verdict is returned. BROOKS - A LITTLE ONE'S BURIAL. The Funeral Observances in Memory of a Beloved Child. The last sad rites of affection for little Florence BROOKS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Brooks, were observed on the self-same day she passed away, for owing to the nature of the disease, almost immediate burial was necessary. She died at sunrise. She was buried at sunset on Sunday last. Ther services were, of course, of a strictly private nature; there could be no general attendance of friendly sympathizers - only the bereaved father and mother and a few, near relatives, who had been in attendance on the sick one, being present. At the house of mourning Rev. Thomas K. Beecher, the pastor of the family, uttered a few words of hope and consolation. At the cemetery he offered prayer for strength and grace to those who suffered and had been called upon by the pitying Father above to bear the only great sorrow of their lives. Woodlawn never seemed half so fair and beautiful before, a fit place an moment to lay away in the placid repose of death - in the sweet serenity of a sleep which had its sure awakening in spheres seraphic - one who in life had been so dear and lovely and seemingly more precious than ever in the hour when, with tears and sobs, it was consigned to the bosom of fair mother earth. Just at eventide, ere scarce the sun in golden beauty had set, at the close of one of the loveliest days in all the sweetest season of the year - flowery June - amid the fragrance and bloom and the beauty of vernal things at their best, they laid the little one away, when all the world to others seemed so bright and beautiful and so well worth living in. But the mourners saw only, through tear-dimmed eyes, the casket that contained the form of their loved one - through the mists of their grief noticed only the minister of God tenderly help to lower the enshrined remains of their darling to its place of rest and then turned away with heavy hearts to take up again as best they could the burdens of life and its duties that must be performed, leaving amid the flowers and the blossoms, in the glow and the softness still silvering the silent shrine of the sleeper, a little green mound, which sweetest flowers flowers shall grace in loving, constant memory of her who rests within it, and over which the daisies and violets of remembrance shall love to bloom, the song of birds be heard morning and evening, and to which their hearts shall ever turn with tender, tearful longings. Hearken, Angels, to Our Pleadings. Angels, in the happy heaven, Nearest to the Father's throne, Do you clasp and cheer a maiden, Little maiden, lately flown? Like a sweet and tender mother, Do you hold her tiny hand, Till she learns the strange, great glories Of the far, eclestial land? Angels, was ther one among you, On the glad day of her birth, Set to be her holy guardian While she tarried on the earth? Did you take her? Did you bear her When her shortened breath was gone, Through the beauties of the morning? Through the swinging gates of dawn? Angels, she was ours - and weakly, We whose hearts are so bereft, Somehow fancy she may miss us, And the homelife she has left; So we ask that you will whisper, In the midst of her surprise, Something that will bring the joyful, Old, earth love-light to her eyes. Tell her all the coming, coming Yeavs - (for which God gives us grace!) - We will think of her and love her, Though we cannot see her face. Tell her that her mother faltered, As she put her playthings by, Not yet used to being mother To a darling in the sky. Tell her that her stricken father, Since he heard dark Azrael's wings in the chamber of the dying, Scarce can turn to living things. Tell her that her little sister Longs$to have her back once more, That with child love she may love her Even better than before. Then O, angels, for our sorrow, If you feel your pity stir. Do this one more blessed kindness For our sakes who yearn for her, And of you are wise and gentle, Yet we fain would have her go, To the care of some dear angel Who has left a child below. O, the pangs of separation! Christ, divine, who mourning wept, With the pain of human grieving, By the grave where Lazarus slept, All our longing, all our crying, Thou canst bear with patience mild, Comfort thou the broken hearted, Keep for us our precious child.

BURT - The death of Mrs Francis Ellery Fitch occurred at her home, No.256 West Fifth street, yesterday day morning. This news was passed among her wide circle of friends yesterday. Many had an insight of her sterling qualities of mind and heart and these felt the loss keenly as a personal one. In the home she loved and in the church where her work was so beneficial this irreparable loss will be heartfelt. Surrounded by her loved ones, she quietly said: "Good-bye." and passed peacefully away to a better land where a resting place awaits her. Expressing no tear for the unseen, smiling and loving, she only regretted that she could no longer remain for those left behind. This had always been her first thought, and those who have enjoyed her hospitality, which was almost boundless, as well as the more intimate circle who make up the home,, feel that the light has gone out. Every care and thoughtfulness which love could suggest were ministered to her,, but all proved unavailing, all was in vain for the disease which had been preying upon her vitality, conquered.
