cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational
history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular
time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives
and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade"
or business.
All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. H. Carleton "Gyp" Age 75, of Elmira, NY, died at Strong Memorial Hospital,
Rochester, NY, on Wednesday, May 21, 2003. Friends may call at the HOLLY-KECK
& BAKER, INC. FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, May 27, from 10 a.m. till 12
noon and at 1 p.m., a Requiem Mass will be held in Grace Episcopal Church,
Elmira. Father Donald W. Mathews, Rector, officiating. Interment in Woodlawn
Cemetery, Elmira, at the convenience of the family. Flowers are welcomed,

St., Elmira, NY 14901. Gyp is survived by his loving wife of 47 years,
Shirley Eldrett; brother, Edward Eldrett of Greensboro, North Carolina;
sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joy and Earle Schaffer of Erie, PA; nephews,
Hal Barlow, Jeff Barlow, Bill Barlow; and several nieces and nephews. Gyp
was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Masonic Ivy Lodge, American Legion
Post 154. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during WWII and a U.S. Marines

ELINE J. Oliver
Of Mark Twain Apartments - Was born January 3, 1912 in Hanover, PA,
the son of the late Jeremiah O. and Sarah A. (Crouse) Eline, died peacefully
on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at the age of 95. His loving wife, Emily
(Cadek) Eline predeceased him in 1981. He was also preceded in death by
his sisters, Helen (Eline) Stowell and Mickey (Eline) Richardson. He is
survived by the following: William R. (Patricia) Stowell, Joy Hamilton,
Robert Stowell, Margaret Stowell, William B. Stowell, Dr. Kimberly Hamilton,
Dr. Matthew Hamilton, Paul (Francine) Cadek, Ann Cadek (Jerard) Shuman,
Beth (Tim) Ragsdale, Mary Hartigan, Kay (Carl) Hesselbach, Judy (Harl)
Pike, Thomas (Ellen) Parry, and William Parry; along with great-nieces
and great-nephews. Oliver was a faithful member of the First United Church
of Christ. He retired from Remington Rand and the Chemung Canal Bank after
several years of dedicated service. He was a veteran of the US Army, proudly
serving his country from 1941 to 1943. Family and friends are invited to

ELLETT Frederick S.
U.S. Army Veteran WWII - Age 89, of Elmira, NY, pass away peacefully
on Monday, September 14, 2009. Fred was born with a twin brother, Joseph,
on July 2, 1920 in Elmira, the son of Henry and Emma Ellett. He is survived
by sons and daughter-in-law, Frederick Jr. and Frances Ellett of Canada,
Robert (Jane Sandore) of Elmira; two grandchildren, Gregory Ellett, Kathryn
Ellett; and two great-granddaughters. Fred was predeceased by his wife,
Geraldine; grandchildren, Joshua Ellett, Alyss Ellett. He received the
Purple Heart while in the European Theater during the war and returned
to Elmira to work at the Hilliard Corp. for the next 43 years. He retired
as Chief Engineer of the Clutch Division. Fred enjoyed his retirement with
many hours given to his church, North Presbyterian Church in Elmira, and
consulting engineer work. He enjoyed many hours working with Alzheimer's
Organization and their personnel. There will be no calling hours. Funeral
services will be held on Friday, September 18, in North Presbyterian Church
at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Gary Chorpenning officiating. Interment of Fred's ashes
will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery Elmira. Those wishing may make donations

JOHN E. ELLIOTT, 69, of Pine City RD, this morning, Oct. 22, 1954. He was a former Erie Railroad employee, retiring in 1945; a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees and the First Church of Nazarene. Survived by wife, Mrs. Ruth Elliott; daughters, Mrs. Alice Criss and Mrs. Gladys Bellows of Elmira, Pfc. Gail Elliott of Paris Island, S.C.; son, Mort Elliott of Elmira. ELLIS - YUNIS
Juliet "Jay" Ellis Died in Binghamton, New York, on Saturday, December
17, 2005. She was born September 8, 1918, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Massoud Ellis. Mrs. Yunis was predeceased by her husband, Mr. Elias Yunis;
her sisters and brothers-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William L. (Rose) Lewis,
Mr. and Mrs. Henry (Tillie) Carroll, Mr. and Mrs. Donald (Agnes) Levinger.
She was also predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas M. (Edna) Ellis, Sr.; and a brother-in-law, Mr. Tuffee Yunis. Upon
her graduation from Binghamton Central High School, Mrs. Yunis was employed
by Security Mutual Life Insurance Company. She left that position during
World War II to work with her father at Ellis Brothers & Joseph, Inc.,
which he founded in 1900. She remained a member of their board of directors
until her death. After World War II, she married Elias Yunis and worked
hand in hand with him in many business endeavors for a number of years.
She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Elmira. She is survived
by a sister, Mrs. John (Edna) Kosik; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Helen
Yunis and Mrs. Helen Lutomski. She is survived by a brother-in-law and
his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas (Barbara) Yunis. Among her other surviving
relatives are her nieces and nephews, Mr. John T. Yunis, Ms. Mary Jo Yunis,
Ms. Helen Ann Yunis and husband, Paul Colucci, Ms. Barbara Yunis and husband,
Jeff, Ms. Amy Yunis, Mr. Jeffrey Yunis, Ms. Pam Freeman, Ms. Bebette Yunis,
and Mr. and Mrs. Rance (Georgia) Reynolds; and the children of her late
brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Ellis, Binghamton, New
York. Private services were held at the request of Mrs. Yunis in Binghamton,
New York, on Tuesday, December 20, 2005. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery,

ELLIS- Mrs. Myra Elizabeth Moore
72, widow of Frank Moore, formerly of West Hill St., died early Sunday,
Sept. 20, 1942. Survivors; A daughter, Mrs. Grace Tupper of Elmira Heights;
a brother, Stephen Ellis; three sisters, Mrs. Alvin Halpin of Horseheads,
Mrs. William Wilson & Mrs. John Viele of Elmira; five grandchildren
& seven great-grandchildren. The body is at the Davis Funeral Home,
where the funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Rev. L. Ernest Otter
will officiate. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.
ROSELLE C ELLIS
Roselle C. Ellis, 70, died Sunday at 2p.m. at the family home, 111
West Chemung Place, following illness of a month. Mr. Ellis had been
an employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company 46 years and also severed
several years as an assistant division trainmaster and later as division
trainmaster. He was placed on the Pennsylvania Railroad Honor
Roll several years ago. He was a member of the O.R.C. Mr. Ellis
is survived by his widow, Mrs. Martha A. Ellis; one son, J. Stanley Ellis;
one daughter, Mrs. Stockwell A. Ridge, all of Elmira; four grandchildren;
a brother Clarence N. Ellis. The remains repose in the Wilson funeral
home where the funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Rev. W.
Hamilton Benham will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

ELLIS STEPHEN T.
Stephen T. Ellis died this morning at 3 o’clock at the home of his
son, Stephen W. Ellis, 1814 West Water street, aged eighty-six years. He
was born near Athens, Pa., where he passed his early life. Mr. Ellis had
resided in Elmira since 1897 & was highly respected. The decedent is
survived by five daughters. Mrs. Frank Moore, Mrs. R.M. Johnson, Mrs. William
Wilson & Mrs. J.H. Viele of Elmira , & Mrs. Elvin Halpen of Horseheads;
a son Stephen W. of Elmira; a sister, Mrs. William Adams of Elmira. The
funeral will be held at the home of his son, Thursday, at 2 o’clock, the
Rev. Delos Abrams to officiate. Burial in Woodlawn cemetery. - Stephen
T. Ellis died September 24, 1923.

Catherine Grace Infant daughter of Shana and Brian Ellison died Saturday,
December 22, 2001 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Survivors include her parents
Shana and Brian of Elmira, a sister, Brianna Marie Ellison at home, maternal
grandparents, Harrison A. and Cheryl M. Carter of Elmira, paternal grandparents,
Herbert and Lillie Ellison of Elmira, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Age 85, of Elmira, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March
11, 2009. Charley was born March 8, 1924, son of Charles H. and Hilda Johnson
Emmick. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his first wife,
Glenna Jones Emmick; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roland & Eleanor
Emmick, Richard Emmick, Robert and Marge Emmick. He is survived by his
loving wife of 37 years, Margaret Frisk Emmick; children, with their spouses,
William and Connie Emmick of Apollo Beach, FL, Jacquelyn and Philip Richmond
of Big Flats, Deborah Batrowny of Elmira, Martin and Lauren Emmick of Boxford,
MA, Frances "Faye" and Mark Menio of Penn Yan, Kimberly and Andrew Mather
of Lee, MA; grandchildren, Lori (Jay) Haley, Michelle Emmick, Paul (Stacy)
Richmond, Carrie (Jeremy) Hooey, Kristen (Pete) Ruhmel, Jason, Kelley,

of Engineering Services from Facet/Purolator after 39 years of service.
Charley also had a 50 year career in real estate and was a certified appraiser.
Charley was awarded Realtor of the Year, and was also inducted into the
Elmira-Corning Regional Board of Realtors Hall of Fame. He loved bowling,
golf, swimming, and vacationing in Maine. Charley was an active member
of North Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. Best known for his honest
and gentlemanly ways, Charley loved being with family and friends. He will
forever be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Friends are invited

Harold L. Age 83, formerly of Elmwood Ave., Elmira Heights, on Wednesday,
December 19, 2001 at ELCOR Health Services, Horseheads. Mr. Empet is survived
by his wife of 61 years, Rocelia Empet; his daughters, Bonnie (Craig) Seymour,
and Susanne Corey, both of Elmira Heights; grandchildren, Pennylee Phillips,
Robert Corey and Craig Paul Seymour; and great-grandchildren, Derek Dutton
and Brittany Decker-Corey. He was predeceased by his daughter Sallyann
Empet. Mr. Empet had worked for the Elmira Heights Central School District
as a custodian and bus driver for 34 years. He was also a crossing guard
at Cohen School for 3 years. Friends are invited to call at the Barber

Marie (Engel) Born Sept. 25, 1920. the daughter to the late Albert
and Elizabeth (Pestrup) Engel died July 27, 2005 in Colchester, CT. Marie
was a resident of Elmira Heights, NY. and died after a brief illness while
at her daughter's. She was predeceased by her husband, James Fisher Free,
Jr. in 1999. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and
Burriss Wilson of Norwich, CT; sister, Elizabeth Stiles of Maryland and
grandson, Burriss, Jr. of Delaware. Family and friends are invited to call
at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 So. Main St., Horseheads, on Monday, Aug.
1, 2005, from 5-8:00 p.m. Her service will take place there at the funeral
home on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. with interment will follow

ERICKSON Bruce Thomas "Boog"
Loving husband, father, and friend, age 52 of Elmira Heights, NY passed
away very unexpectedly at home with his beloved wife and friend, Carol,
by his side.
Bruce was born in Elmira, on February 26, 1957. Surviving him is his
wife of 28 years, Carol Said Erickson; sons, Kyle and Fiancée
Karen Rockwell; Scott Erickson (Alicia Espigh); daughter, Leann Erickson;
father and mother, Donald and Dona Erickson; canine companion, "Hayley";
granddogs, "Duke", "Fozzie", and "Maggie"; brother, Mark K. (Donna) Erickson;
sisters, Karen M. (Dale) Chapman; Sue E. (Troy) Traynham; nieces and nephews,
Julie R. (Tom) Feenaughty; Anne M. (Tim) Harms; Heather M. Erickson; Theresa
J. Erickson; Craig M. Cathers; Matthew T. Cathers; Jerris A. Cathers; Austin
Traynham; Alyssa Traynham; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, including
great aunt, Edith Martin. In addition, Bruce is dearly missed by his father
and mother-in-law, Howard and Joyce Said; brothers and sisters-in-law,

proud to serve 29 years as a NYS Correction Officer in Elmira. He was very
devoted to his fellow coworkers and friends. In the past, Bruce enjoyed
playing Rugby with the "Grayhairs" Rugby League of Elmira, and was a proud
Eagle Scout. Some of Bruce's most enjoyable times were spent coaching area
youth in sports, such as the Edison High School Football and Track Teams,
Elmira and Elmira Heights Small Fry Football Teams, the Elmira Free Academy
JV Football Team, and area Little League Baseball teams. He also loved
to volunteer for the YMCA Indian Guides, Trailblazers, and the EFA Booster
Club. Most of all, Bruce will best be remembered for his unforgettable
smile and sense of humor. He cherished his family, friends, and coworkers
and was a friend to everyone.

ERIKSON, J. Harold Jr.
Loving Husband, Father & Grandfather - Was born April 19, 1919
in Elmira, NY, the son of the late J. Harold and Mathilda (Anderson) Erikson,
Sr., and passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, in Aiken, SC at the
age of 90. His loving wife of 67 years, Virginia E. (Leupelt) Erikson,
predeceased him March 29, 2008. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law,
Robert B. and Mary Jo Erikson; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela J. and Richard
N. Light; much loved grandchildren, Christopher Erikson and Heather Erikson
Ademovic and Thomas and Kristen Light. Harold graduated from Cornell University
with a BS from the School of Hotel Administration. He started his career
with General Electric Company in Schenectady, NY and Louisville, KY from
1941 - 1956. He was the Assistant Controller for Raymond International,
Inc., NY, NY, from 1956 - 1958 and became Controller for F & M Schaefer
Brewing Company, Brooklyn, NY, from 1958 - 1961. In 1961 he joined SuCrest
Corporation, NY, NY, as the Vice President and Treasurer until he left
in 1964 to become the Vice President of Finance and Planning for P. Ballantine
& Sons of Newark, NJ. He joined Associated Metals and Minerals Corporation,
NY, NY, in 1971 as Vice President of Operation and worked there until he
retired in 1984. He was a resident of Smoke Rise, Kinnelon, NJ, for 28
years. After retiring, he and his wife Virginia moved to Imperial Golf
Club Estates in Naples, FL, where they resided for 20 years before moving
to Merrill Gardens in Naples, FL for the next 3 years. Harold was very
active in his church, The Community Church of Smoke Rise, NJ and Vanderbilt
Presbyterian Church in Naples, FL while living there. He loved to play
golf and was a member of the Lake Mohawk Golf Club in Sparta, NJ and Imperial
Golf Course in Naples, FL. He loved to travel and especially enjoyed cruises.

ERWAY ERNESTINE ERWAY YOGGY
Ernestine Erway Yoggy, 81, formerly of Wellsboro, died Wednesday, Sept.
30 after an extended illness. Born Aug. 3, 1906, in Wellsboro, she was
the daughter of the late Albert and Carrie Boyce Erway. Mrs. Yoggy graduated
from the Wellsboro High School in 1952 and for a number of years she worked
as a secretary for the law firm of Crichton and Owlett, later known as

a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church in Elmira, NY. Surviving
are her husband of 57 years, Albert A. Yoggy and his former daughter-in-law
and her husband, Robin and Richard West, all of 718 Algonquin Drive, Horseheads,
NY; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Anna Jean Yoggy of Elmira, NY,
Todd A. Yoggy of Corning, NY and Mrs. Jeremy (Kristin Leigh) Davis of Elmira,
NY; a great-grandson, David Elmer Porter of Elmira, NY; a sister, Miss
Minnie Erway of Wellsboro; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Yoggy of Binghamton,
NY and Mrs. Dorothy Yoggy of Johnson City, NY and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral and committal services were held at the Barber Funeral Home, 413
South Main St., Horseheads, NY, Thursday, Oct. 1, immediately following
calling hours. The Rev. Robert Darling, her nephew, officiated. Interment
was made in Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, NY. Memorial donations may be

ESTELLE Philip T. "P.T."
Age 46 of Elmira, NY. He was born November 23, 1962 in Elmira, son
of the late Philip P. and Margaret (Barr) Estelle, and passed away Wednesday,
April 15, 2009, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center very unexpectedly. He
was predeceased by his father on July 7, 2005; his mother on September
3, 2005; and his aunt "Doty" Doris Kinkade on October 5, 2005. "P.T." is
survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia Estelle and Larry Bacon
of Elmira; aunt, Phyllis Chandler of Waverly, NY; many cousins including
Joseph and Annmarie Chandler of Waverly, NY, Thomas Chandler of Binghamton,
NY, William and Debra Chandler of Waverly, NY; along with his ARC family
at the Smith Road residence in Pine Valley and many friends. P.T. graduated
from Thomas A. Edison High School in 1983. He was a Boy Scout, Assistant
Scoutmaster and a proud Eagle Scout with Troop 154 in Elmira Heights; was
employed with the ARC on Sullivan St. for over 26 years and was an honorary
member of the Cashmere Grotto. He was loved very much by his family and
all of his ARC family, co-workers and friends. Family and friends are invited

ETTENBERGER - SUTTON, Claire E.
Died September 11, 2008. Claire Sutton, 87, of Elmira died in her sleep,
in her own bed, in her own apartment, having lived as independently as
possible. Claire, the daughter of George and Florence Ettenberger, was
born June 13, 1921 in Elmira. Claire graduated from Sts. Peter and Paul
Parochial School in 1935 and Elmira Free Academy in 1939. After attending
Elmira College for two years, she graduated from Scudder Business School,
5th Avenue, New York City. After raising 5 children, Claire re-enrolled
at Elmira College and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in June, 1991.
She was then re-associated with her original Class of '43. Claire was married
to Philip M. Sutton, son of Raymond and Lulu Sutton, on June 15, 1946 in
St. John the Baptist Church, Elmira, N.Y. Philip and Claire are survived
by four children: Anne (Leonard) Dezelski, Thomas (Mala) Sutton, George
(Debbie) Sutton, and CSM Theodore (Evi) Sutton; 12 grandchildren: Christopher
Sutton; Daniel (Maria), Robert (Jenny), and David Sutton; and Mary, John,
Francis, Joseph, Peter (Teresa), Theresa, Simon, and Catherine Dezelski;
2 great-grandchildren: Camyla and Sebastian Sutton. Claire was preceded
in death by her brother, Ralph Ettenberger (1991); her husband, Philip
(1996); and her son, Gregory (1997). In addition to her roles as wife and
mother, Claire was an exceedingly competent secretary and a most gifted
seamstress. Claire retired from Elmira Savings Bank in 1999. Claire continued
to sew until the day she died. At her sewing machine, Claire created works
of art: clothing, quilts, banners, Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls, aprons...
Her dolls were real and beautiful and totally lovable. Claire lived an
orderly life. And, she was truly a classy lady. May she rest in peace.

ETTENBERGER - MEDDAUGH, DeSales Gribben
Age 90, of Pinegrove Ave. in Rochester, passed away at the home of
her daughter while visiting in Arizona. DeSales was born in Elmira, NY,
the daughter of the late Frank and Emily (Voigt) Ettenberger. She was predeceased
by her first husband, Robert Gribben in 1953 and recently by her husband,
Edward Meddaugh in 2007. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law,
Bethany and William Hicks of Paradise Valley, AZ; granddaughters, Alexandra
and Samantha Hicks; and step-grandchildren, James (Stacey) and Scott (Julie)
Hicks. DeSales was a 1939 graduate of Elmira College. She worked as a librarian
in Geneseo, taught in Windsor, Waverly, the Town of Gates and later retired
in 1981 from West Irondequoit School District in Rochester after 32 years
of teaching. She was also a member of Christ Church in Rochester, NY. Family

John T. Age 99, of Elmira, NY. He was born December 24, 1905 in Summerville,
SC, son of the late Neptune and Mary (Marshall) Eugene and died on Friday,
October 14, 2005, at Elcor Health Services. He was predeceased by his wife
of 62 years, Viola in 2002. He is survived by nieces and nephews, Cornelius
(Mamie) Nelson and Nathaniel Nelson, both of Elmira, Alberta Mark and Dorothy
Murray, both of Brooklyn, NY, Lois Riley of PA; along with other nieces,
nephews and cousins. He also leaves three very special friends, Laura Ann
Williams, Roy and Ernestine Kyles. John was employed with Park Church for
23 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Monumental Baptist Church,
serving as Deacon, Trustee, Senior Choir member and Adult Sunday School

EVANS Reverend George L. Age 87 of Elmira, NY, began walking the streets of gold on November 4, 2005 at St. Joseph's Hospital SNF, where he was lovingly cared for. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Constance R. Evans; daughters, Elaine (Vaughn) Sherwood, Mary Alice (Rev. Warren) Jones, Sue (Jon) Shaylor; grandchildren, Rev. Meggan (Adam) Nugent, Hannah (David) Valle, Adam A. Sherwood, Abby L. Lorraine Z. (Everts) Of Elmira and Elmira Heights, NY died Jan. 27,
2002 in Sayre, PA. She was born March 27, 1915 in Elmira, NY the daughter
to the late Elmer and Marion Wheat Everts. She is survived by her daughter,
Patricia Rae Calisher of Apalachin, NY; son, Larry Arden Vowell of Jamestown,
NC; grandchildren, Sharon Lorraine Vargo, Mary Beth Weston, Andrea Arden
Calisher, Alexis Ann Vowell, Ryan Loren Vowell; great-granddaughter, Olivia
Rae Litzinger; sister-in-law, Alice Everts, nephews, Ed, Jeff and David
Everts, several cousins, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was also predeceased
by her sister, Marjorie and brothers, Harry and Elton Everts. Lorraine,
a graduate of South Side High School, worked in the Elmira area for many

waitress in various restaurants. She was a member of the North Presbyterian

O.E.S. Having been active with RSVP, she was the recipient of the Presidential
Award in the 1980's for her many hours of volunteer work. She will always
