| Reading a series of obituaries from a single
cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational
history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular
time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives
and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade"
or business.
All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. LABUSKI RENE MARIA MURDOCK
Rene` Maria (Labuski) Town of Southport Resident Age 42, was born April
24, 1964 in Elmira, NY, the daughter of Richard L. and Marian (Boynton)
Labuski, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 9, 2006, at the
home of her mother where she received the utmost love and care from the
staff at Southern Tier Hospice. Her beloved father, Richard, November 25,
2003, predeceased her. She is survived by her loving children, Jessica
Labuski, Jason Murdock and Jeffery Evans all of Elmira, NY; beloved mother,
Marian Labuski of Elmira, NY; brothers, Richard Labuski, also of Elmira,
NY; Ronald (Carol) Labuski of West Grove, PA; James (Joni) Labuski of Horseheads,
NY; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Rene` was a homemaker
who enjoyed raising her three children, making arts and crafts and giving
her projects away as gifts. She also enjoyed staying in touch with family
through email and sending pictures. Family and friends are invited to call
at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY, on
Wednesday, September 13, 2006, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 to 7:00
p.m. Funeral Services honoring Rene` will be held there Thursday at 11:00
a.m. Reverend Edward Crandall will celebrate her services. Interment will
follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, NY. Memorial donations may be directed

her memory.
LAMPKIN - PERRY
Bertha Lee Age 87, of Elmira, NY, but resided at Elcor Health Services
in Horseheads, NY, passed away on December 7, 2006 at the Arnot Ogden Medical
Center in Elmira. Bertha was born on March 4, 1919 in Tallassee, Alabama,
daughter of the late Peter and Ellen Lampkin. Survivors include her son,
Alb Garrett of Orlando, FL; sister, Ethel Phillips of Cleveland, OH; many
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bertha was predeceased by her daughters,
Roberta Jones and Lessie B. Finley. It was Bertha's request that a private
service would be held for her. Her interment will take place in Woodlawn
Cemetery. The family of Bertha would like to express the sincere gratitude
to the entire staff at the Elcor Health Services.
NURSS, MRS. LOVINA LANE
Mrs. Lovina Lane Nurss, age 65, died at the family home at 533
Mt. Zoar Street, Sunday at 4 p.m. She is survived by one son, Harry
A. Nurss, two grandsons, Robert and Ronald. Mrs. Nurss was a member
of the Southside Baptist Church and a charter member of W. B. A. No. 212,
Elmira. The funeral will be held at 533 Mt. Zoar Street, Tuesday
at 2 p.m. The Rev. W. Allen will officiate. Burial will be
in Woodlawn.
LANGDON--Mrs. Samuel L. Clemens. The remains of Mrs. Samuel L. Clemens, wife of Mark Twain who died in Florence, Italy, arrived in New York City Tuesday on the steam- ship Prince Oscar. Mark Twain, his two daughters, Clara and Jane L. Clemens, also arrived on the ship and were met at the quarantine station by E. E. Loomis, second vice-president of the Lackawanna Railroad, a relative of the family, General C. J. Langdon and son, Jervis Langdon, brother and nephew of Mrs. Clemens. The funeral party and the remains arrived in this city last evening at 10:10 o'clock, the members of the party coming in Mr. Loomis' private car. The funeral of Mrs. Clemens was held at 4 o'clock this afternoon at the home of her brother, General Charles J. Langdon, on Main Street. Rev. Samuel Eastman officiated and the interment was private in Woodlawn Cemetery. There were no pallbearers and all the arrangements were carried out with the utmost simplicity.
LANTERMAN, Daniel - Daniel P. Lanterman (SRGP 06072) died Saturday morning at 6:30 o'clock at the family home on Lake Street, Horseheads, aged sixty-nine years. Mr. Lanterman had been ill of pneumonia. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Miss Ola Lanterman at home, two sons, Daniel P. Lanterman, Jr. and George at home. The funeral was held at the home Monday at 3 o'clock. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira. (Jan 1924)
WOOD, MRS. ORA LANTERMAN (SRGP 6070)
Mrs. Ora Lanterman Wood, born Nov. 7, 1881, was carried away
in death’s arms from this sinful world to the golden gates of heaven beyond,
Sept. 27. She was a patient sufferer, and one of God’s innocent children.
Mrs. Wood had been ill for a long time. The 11th of last December
she went to Sayre. From there to Elmira, taking treatment through
the winter. In April she went to Binghamton to be treated by Dr.
Kilmer. When she came back home the first of September she was much
worse and the cold merciless arms of death crept closer to her and seemed
to whisper its dreadful message in her ear. She was a faithful Christian
woman and she often said, “My faith in God is all that keeps me breathing.”
She will be greatly missed by her family and neighbors. She was married
to Stephen Wood Oct. 7, 1898. Mrs. Wood is survived by her husband
and three daughters, Beatrice of Elmira; Bernice and Mildred at home.
Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Lanterman of Elmira, one sister, Ola Lanterman,
of Elmira, two brothers, Dan of Horseheads, and George of Elmira, also
survive. The funeral was held at her home in Rutland Sept. 29, Reverend
Abram of the South Side Baptist church officiating.

Lynne M. Age 44 of Elmira, NY Tuesday, October 9, 2001 at Arnot Ogden
Medical Center. She is survived by her husband Warren Fuller (formerly
employed at Chemung Canal Trust Co.), the beloved mother of: Joshua and
Whitney Fuller at home, father: Lee Lantz of Athens PA, sisters: Linda
(Bob) Park of Murfreesboro, TN, Laurie (Raymond) Brooks of VA, brother:
Lee (Tammy) Lantz, mother-in-law: Leatha Whiting of Wellsboro, PA, brothers-in-law:
Wayne (Sandy) Lantz of Sayre, PA, Carson (Joan) Hinds of Athens, PA, sister-in-law:
Sue (Gary) Horton of Athens, PA, and several nieces and nephews. She is
predeceased by her mother, Gladys Wilkins Lantz. Lynne was formerly employed
by Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Family and friends are invited to call

13, 2001 from 2:00 to 3:00 PM with Funeral and Committal service there

LATHROP ELIZABETH BUELL
Elizabeth "Betty" J.- Age 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August
26, 2007, at the Warren Haven Nursing Home in Oxford, NJ. Born October
24, 1910, in Ithaca, NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Maude
Lathrop. Betty was a retired buyer for the S. F. Izard Company, having
worked for the company for over 28 years. She moved to Hackettstown, NJ
in 1998 and lived there until moving to Warren Haven in May of 2005. She
was predeceased by her loving husband, Paul M. Buell, a prominent Elmira
florist; and by her brother, Lawrence Lathrop. Betty is survived by her
two sons, Robert L. Moulter of Hackettstown, NJ, Winston R. Cooper and
his wife, Kathy of Pemberton, NJ; two sisters, Mary Benedict and husband,
Phillip of Wiersdale, FL, Gretchen Lathrop of New Port Richey, FL; stepson,
Robert Buell of Chattanooga, TN; daughter-in-law, Heidi Buell of Chattanooga,
TN; three grandchildren, James Cooper and wife, Mary of Eagle River, AK,
Elizabeth Hopkins and husband, Mark of Morris Plains, NJ, Jeffrey Cooper
and wife, Alexis of Charleston, SC; five great-grandchildren, Christine
Cooper of New Egypt, NJ, Connor and Lauren Hopkins of Morris Plains, NJ,

LAWRENCE Ivan E.
Age 89 of Old Ithaca Rd., Horseheads, passed away after an extended
illness on Tues., April 8, 2008, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Ivan
was born in Stamford, NY, the son of the late Luman and Rita (Osterhoudt)
Lawrence. He is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years, Dorothy (Wheelcok)
Lawrence; son, Peter Lawrence of Burdett, NY; sister-in-law, Marie Lawrence
of Stamford, NY; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by
his brother, Vincent Lawrence in 2007. He was also predeceased by his brothers-in-law,
Danford (Elizabeth) Wheelock and Allen Wheelock. Ivan was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church in Horseheads. A graduate of the Syracuse University
Hospital School of Radiology, Ivan was a sales person for Picker X-Ray
based in Cleveland, OH for over 30 years. An avid clock and watch enthusiast,
Ivan collected and repaired time pieces for many years. He was also a member
of National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. Services with the
Barber Funeral Home in Horseheads will take place privately at the convenience
of his family with his interment also taking place privately in Woodlawn
Cemetery in Elmira. Those wishing may also remember Ivan with memorials

LEAVENWORTH - CLARKE
Adelaide L. formerly of the Bel-Air Mobile Home Park Age 98, passed
away peacefully on Sunday, November 6, 2005, at the Elcor Health Services,
Horseheads, NY, where she resided most recently. She was born September
5, 1907 in Addison, NY, the daughter of the late Earl and Addie (Grenell)
Leavenworth. Her loving husband, Charles J. Clarke, predeceased Adelaide
on January 8, 1983. Her brothers, E. Gillette, Harold and Ivan Leavenworth,
also preceded her in death. She is survived by her beloved cousin, Margaret
(James) Callas of Elmira, NY; their children, Peter Callas of FL, Penny
(David) Allington of Elmira, NY, with their children, Andrea (Mark) Badurak
of Brewer, ME, Jerid (Melissa) Allington of Brewster, NY, Cathy Callas
of Elmira, NY, Georgia (Thomas) Rennie of Pine City, NY, with their children,
Carolyn Rennie and Colleen Rennie, both of Pine City, NY; sister-in-law,
Fanny Clarke of Williamsport, PA; along with several other cousins and

LEE - The funeral of the twin infants of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Lee was held at their residence, 963 Davis street, Wednesday at 4 o'clock p.m., Rev. W. D. More officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn, the funeral being private. (handwritten on article – Nov. 8, 1898)
William E. LEE of 969 Davis St. died Sunday, July2, 1939. He is survived by his wife, one son, Herbert C. Lee, and one daughter, Mrs. Horace Sprague, both of Elmira; three grand-daughters and one grandson. The body was removed from the Davis funeral home Monday to the family home where the funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. The Rev. C. E. Eichner will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery.
LEFLER Frederick E.
Age 94, of Elmira, died Monday, December 3, 2007, at Elcor Health Services.
Survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by sisters,
Lillian Morley, Edna Mae Kisor, Marian Evans, Betty Quayle, Mildred Farnsworth,
and Blanche Roberts; brothers, William D. Lefler Jr. and Harold E. Lefler.
Fred is retired from Howell Box Co. and the Elmira Star-Gazette. Also he
was a former member of Lake St. Presbyterian Church. The family will receive
Relatives and friends at the Kalec Funeral Home, Thursday, December 6th
from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial at the convenience of the family in Woodlawn Cemetery.

LEFLER - MRS. IDA M. OAKLEY (SRGP 61247)
Mrs. Ida M. Oakley, widow of Wallace Oakley, died at the family home,
625 Pennsylvania Avenue at 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Oakley was
a lifelong member of the Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church and was for
several years a trustee of the Southern Tier Children’s Home. She was a
devoted wife and mother and a loyal friend. Mrs. Oakley is survived by
three children, Mrs. John C. Dyott of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Edgar Crowell
and Leon L. Oakley of this city. Funeral services will be held at the home
at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon. The Rev. C. G. McConnell will officiate.

LEMAK Joseph J., Jr. Age 61, of Elmira Heights, NY, passed away Tuesday morning, June 13, 2006, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center due to complications from diabetes. Joe was born January 27, 1945 to the late Joseph J. and Mary Daly Lemak Sr., and grew up in Watkins Glen, NY. He attended Elmira College and received both his BS and MS in Education. Joe retired from the Odessa Montour Central School District after 29 year of teaching Social Studies primarily Afro-Asian history and was the advisor to the yearbook for many years. Joe was an extensive world traveler visiting dozens of countries; bringing back many stories to his classes. His travels were highlighted by a 500-mile walking pilgrimage on the Camino Trail in Spain. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and enjoyed riding his BMW motorcycle. Joe served his country with the US Army during the Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife, Susan Follette of Elmira Heights, NY; son, Joseph E. (Christine) Lemak of Elmira, NY; daughter, Jennifer A. (Brian) Buff of Albany, NY; grandchildren, Mary, Martha and India; stepchildren, Bethany (Daniel) Burger, Derek (Jill) Stevens; step grandchildren, Justin, Laurel, Katie and Colin; sister, Pamela (Michael) Gartland of Poughkeepsie, NY; nephews, Patrick, Gregory and Steven; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. CHARLES L. LEONARD Charles L. Leonard died this morning at the family home, 658 Baldwin Street, aged fifty-eight years. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. William Brewer and Mrs. James Shipman; three sons, Frank, Elmer and Harry; two sisters, Mrs. Fred terry and Mrs. James Clark. The remains will be removed Tuesday evening to the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Brewer, 1314 Lackawanna Avenue, where the funeral will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Rev. A. E. LEUPELT Gustav K. 'Gus' Loving husband, father and grandfather Age 80, formerly of West Hill Road Elmira Heights, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 31, 2005, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. He was born September 16, 1925 in Elmira, NY, son of the late Gustav F. and Frederica (Hodgkins) Leupelt. 'Gus' married Marie E. Coakley on March 19, 1948. They enjoyed 55 wonderful years of life and love together prior to her death February 9, 2004. His brother, Robert Leupelt; and sister, Thelma Drake, also predeceased him. His survivors include loving daughter, Sharon 'Sherry' (Bruce Cady) of Horseheads, NY; granddaughter, Shannan (James) Russ of Horseheads, NY; grandson, Sean Hamilton of Mount Saint Alban Washington, DC; great-grandson, Jared Russ of Horseheads, NY; sister, Virginia (Harold) Erikson of Naples, FL; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Ruthie Miller of Elmira, NY; along with special nephew, Kenny Leupelt; and several other nieces and nephews. 'Gus' was a Veteran of the US Army and proudly served his country from 1943 - 1946. He retired from Servomation in Elmira after several years of dedicated service. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and had a knack for fixing anything that was broke. Gustav enjoyed his life to the fullest, but the most important and dearest to him was his family. He loved them all dearly and they will all miss him very much. LEUPELT - ERIKSON, Virginia E.
Loving Wife, Mother & Grandmother
Was born November 20, 1918 in Elmira, NY, the daughter of the late
Gustav and Frederica (Hodgkins) Leupelt, passed away on Saturday, March
29, 2008, at the Aiken Regional Medical Center, Aiken, SC, at the age of
89. She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, J. Harold Erikson
Jr.; son and daughter-in-law, Robert B. and Mary Jo Erikson; daughter and
son-in-law, Pamela J. and Richard N. Light; much-loved grandchildren, Christopher
and Heather Erikson and Thomas and Kristen Light. Virginia was a resident
of Smoke Rise, Kinnelon, NJ for 28 years. After her husband's retirement
moved to Imperial Golf Club and Estates Naples, FL, where they resided
for 20 years before moving to Merrill Gardens in Naples, FL for the last
three years. She was very active in the communities in which she lived,
serving on many boards. She enjoyed singing and was an active member in
the choir of the Community Church of Smoke Rise, NJ for many years and
most recently the Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church in Naples, FL where she
also enjoyed being an active member of the choir. Family and friends are
invited to meet at the main entrance to the Woodlawn Cemetery, 1200 Walnut
Street, Elmira, NY at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 4, 2008. Once everyone
has arrived a processional to the gravesite will follow, where the Reverend
Gary Chorpenning will officiate the graveside ceremony for Virginia. In
lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Vanderbilt Presbyterian

LEWIS - Ella Lewis (Mrs. Charles) Bowman - (1930) of Elmira,
former Trojan and daughter of the late Hiram Lewis, died suddenly this
past week. She was the
widow of Charles Bowman, who died less than a month ago, well known
in railroad circles. Mrs. Bowman was in Troy for the funeral services of
Mrs. A. L. Budd. Her sister, Amanda Lewis now Mrs. Black lives in
Williamsport and a brother lives in Kansas City.
LEWIS - McGRAIN, Elsie M.(Lewis)
Age 86, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at St. Joseph's
Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility 5th Floor. Elsie was born on January
31, 1921 in Elmira, daughter of the late Charles and Ida May (McCann) Lewis.
She was married to Ralph McGrain who predeceased her in April of 1980.
Elsie is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, George of Elmira Heights,
Arthur (Priscilla) of Millport, Ralph of Elmira and Leon (Wanda) of Horseheads;
many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to play Euchre and
shuffle board. Elsie was a member of the American Legion Aux. Post #154
and a past member of the Elmira Moose Club #517. Family and friends are
invited to call on Friday, December 7th from 1 to 3 p.m. at the James D.
Barrett Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow there at 3 p.m. with
Deacon George Welch officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience
of the family in Woodlawn Cemetery. The family would like to give a special
thanks to Dr. Schiavone and the staff of the 5th floor Skilled Nursing
Unit.
LEWIS - Franklin D. "Frank" Grounds foreman Age 58 of North Main Street Elmira, NY. Passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 23, 2001 at home surrounded by his loving and caring family. He was born December 20, 1942 in Blossburg, PA the son of the late Charles J. and Charlotte L. (Meise) Lewis. Fanklin married Nancy White on November 19, 1977. They have enjoyed 23 wonderful years of marriage together. His brothers, Joseph, Irvin, and Archie predeceased him. He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; daughter, Teresa Tornari with husband Jeff Carey of Watkins Glen, NY; son, Joel (Helaine) Tornari of Baltimore, MD; brothers, Charles of Nunda, NY; Harry of North Chili, NY; Lester of Allentown, PA; George of Bolivar, PA and Jack of Batavia, NY; sisters, Mary of Brownsville, TX; Polly, Cathy, Sara, Florence and Hazel all of Elmira, NY; grandchildren, Lexy Carey, Mattea Tornari and Louisa Tornari, along with several nieces, nephews and companion "Tyler" the cat. "Frank" as all affectionately knew him was the Grounds Foreman for 35 years at Elmira College. For the past 3 years was the Grounds Foreman for St. Anthony/St. Patrick Churches. He was a Veteran of the US Army and a past member of the American Legion Bentley Trumble Post in Horseheads, NY. "Frank" was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed golfing and bowling. He will be missed by all and remembered by all for being big hearted, hard working and for being a "gentle giant". Jean B. Age 84 of Horseheads, NY passed away on Sunday June 26, 2005
at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira, NY. She was born on December 29, 1920
in Wellsville, NY the daughter of the late Arlton and Leola Corbin Lewis.
She was a graduate of Elmira Business Institute and was a Legal Secretary
for many years. Mrs. Shull married her husband Kenneth L. Shull who pre-deceased
her on October 20, 1984. Jean was a member of the First United Methodist
Church of Horseheads, NY. She was a member and Past President of the Arnot
Ogden Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Horseheads Woman's Club. She
was pre-deceased by her parents and her husband. Mrs. Shull is survived
by her daughter Vicki L. Oxenham of Crofton, MD; several cousins and a
host of caring friends. There will be no prior calling hours. A Memorial
Service will be held on Monday August 22, 2005 at 11 AM at The First United
Methodist Church of Horseheads to celebrate Mrs. Shull's Life. The Rev.

LEWIS –RUTH M. MCWHOTER, Pine City, NY, died Friday, October 24, 1997 at Chemung County Nursing Facility, Elmira, NY. Born to Grant and Minnie Lewis of Troy, PA, she was one of 12 children. Ruth was a longtime member of Pine City Baptist Church and the Webb Mills Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by sisters, Helen Cloys of Ithaca, NY and Agnes Wood of Troy, PA; nephews, several relatives and close friends. She was predeceased by her husband Miles H. McWhorter in 1984. son of the late Valois and Mary Lou (Nixon) Liddick, passed away on Sunday,

JR., Mr. Richard John Age 83, of Walkersville, MD, died on Sunday,
November 30, 2003 in Walkersville, MD. He was the husband of Mary Miller
Leisenring. He was born on December 21, 1919 in Blossburg, PA, a son of
the late Richard John and Ethel L. Mays Leisenring Sr. At the age of five,
his family moved to Elmira, NY, where he attended school and lived for
many years. He served in the US Navy during WW II and was employed at the
Remington Rand Corp. in Elmira for over 23 years. He was a member of the
Frederick Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder and served on
various committees. Surviving besides his wife are three children,
Charlotte A. Robinson of Annapolis, MD, John D. Leisenring of Frederick,
MD, and Faith Foster Stouffer and husband Jeffrey of Sharpsburg, MD;
five grandchildren; and one great-grandson, Daniel A. Robinson. A memorial
service was held at the Frederick Presbyterian Church. Inurnment, with
Masonic Services, will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, at the convenience

Romer, Clara Linderman- aged 70, died in St Joseph Hospital Sunday
afternoon, Sept 22, 1946,on her 70th birthday. She was born on the Jacob
Linderman farm, Troy Twp. And was a graduate of Troy High School. . She
was married to the late Charles B Romer and was a resident of Elmira for
many years. Mrs. Romer is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Duncan Williams,
Glen Ridge, N J; two grandchildren, Beverly and Duncan Jr,; a brother,
Harry Linderman, Scranton. The funeral was held Monday at 4 pm from the

LINDGREN Donald O. Age 77, of Waneta Lake, NY, formerly of Elmira Heights, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 26, 2006. Don was born September 9, 1928 in Arnot, PA, son of the late Arthur and Dora Danielson Lindgren. He was a graduate of Southside High School and of Simmons Institute of Funeral Service, where he obtained his Undertaking and Embalmers License. Don then returned to Elmira Heights where he joined the family business as a Licensed Funeral Director, which at that time was operated by his uncle, Pat Ballard. He married Marilyn Crans on May 10, 1958 in Elmira, NY. Don and Marilyn purchased the funeral home changing the name to Ballard and Lindgren Funeral Home. They were later joined by their son, Cliff, in the operation of the funeral home, and in 1995, following 52 years of service, they sold the family funeral home. Don and Marilyn unselfishly dedicated their lives serving the needs of countless families in the community. Don's memberships included Oakwood United Methodist Church, Bethany Lutheran Church, Elmira Heights Rotary Club, Elmira Heights American Legion, Post #154, F & AM Lodge #913, Elmira Heights, NY, Elmira Grotto and past member of the Chemung County Funeral Directors Association. Dorothy Jane (Locke) Recently celebrating her 87th birthday on December

20, 2006 away after an extended illness, while residing with her son in

daughter of the late Arthur and Ruth (Foster) Locke. She was predeceased
by her husband, William in 1980; and is survived by her daughter and son-in-law,
Mary Ruth and Tom Nybeck of Horseheads; son, David T. Garrett and Roland
Sommers of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; grandchildren, Tom (Lisa) Nybeck of

The Rev. Franklin H. Lockwood, 63, late of 800 Mt. Zoar Street,
died Monday at 1:15 a.m. He had been engaged in the ministry of the
Methodist Church 35 years. Recently he had been associated iwht the
Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Mr. Lockwood was the youngest member
of a family of 14 children, two of whom survive. He is survived by
his widow; a daughter, helen; a son, Paul, at home; two brothers, Wallace
and Charles Lockwood, of Wichita, Kas.; several nieces and nephews.
The body reposes in the Hagerman funeral home and will be removed to the
family home this evening at 7 o’clock. The funeral will be held Wednesday

LONG Stanley W.
A long time resident of Golden Glow and presently of Painted Post,
NY passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, February 21, 2008 at Corning
Hospital at the age of 88. Stanley was born on July 13, 1919 son of Parshall
& Lula Belle Reynolds Long. He married Jeanette Avery on Stanley was
well known in the Elmira community having operated the Pennsylvania Ave.
Barber Shop on the Southside for many years with his partner. Always a
gentlemen, Stanley enjoyed waiting on his customers. In serving his country
he was a WWII Veteran and was stationed in Pearl Harbor. Dedicated to the
Lord, he was very active in the Pennsylvania Ave. United Methodist Church
in Southport for many years. Stanley was a loving husband and supportive
father who is survived by his loving wife and companion, Jeanette Avery
Long, Painted Post; their daughter, Sue Long Garrison, Painted Post. Family

Fred Thompson Loomis and Edythe Ferguson Loomis. Born, raised, and educated
in Elmira Fred loved his family, his friends, his church, his job, and
his community to which he willingly gave his all. Fred sincerely felt that
all of the above gave him a good satisfying life. He was strong, capable,
and steady and accomplished many things in life always without fanfare.
Fred served his country with The U. S. Army Air Forces during World War
II and was Chemung County's first Prisoner of War in The European Theatre
and was his family's "Hero" for all his life. Fred retired in 1981 as Eastern
Sales Engineer for the Clutch and Brakes Division of Facet Enterprises
in Elmira Heights, NY. It was Mr. Loomis' wish that there be no prior calling
hours. A Memorial Service will be held at Park Church Main St. & West
Church St. Elmira, NY on Saturday October 20, 2007 at 11 AM. The Rev. John
Gibbon and The Rev. Robert F. Lester will officiate. Interment in Woodlawn

the North Presbyterian Church. She worked in housekeeping for the Lourdes
Hospital in Binghamton, NY and many establishments in Alabama where she
resided not long ago. For many years she worked as a secretary for the
Claire H. Schneck and Sons here in Elmira. She was a loving mother and
grandmother who loved to play bingo. Sondra's other hobbies include; crocheting,
reading and doing puzzles.

Mrs. Mary C. Hopkins died unexpectedly Monday afternoon in the
family home at Jackson Summit, Pa. She is survived by her husband,
James Hopkins; four sons, Clarence and Ray of Corning; Lyman of Elmira;
Jesse of Binghamton; a daughter, Mrs. Holden Smith of Horseheads; several
grandchildren. The funeral will be held in the family home at Jackson Summit,
Pa., Thursday at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. George Burroughs of Pine City will
officiate. The funeral will be private. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira.
LOWRY - MRS. DAVID OPPENHEIM (SRGP 80598)
Mrs. Isabelle Lowry Oppenheim, 69, wife of David Oppenheim
of Elmira, NY, formerly of Morris Run, died Wednesday, April 5, 1972, at
her home following a protracted illness. She was a registered nurse and
had been a partner in Oppenheim's Food Market, Elmira. Surviving, besides
her husband, are four sisters, Mrs. Sarah Hefling, of Mansfield, and Mrs.
Jane L. Hall, Mrs. Margaret Kennedy and Mrs. Anna Burns, all of Elmira,
and a brother, Campbell Lowry, of Troy. The funeral was at 2 pm Friday
at Ballard and Lindgren's, Elmira Heights. Burial was in Woodlawn
Cemetery, Elmira. The Rev. Roger Kemp officiated.
LUBLIN James Age 68 of Horseheads, NY passed away on Wednesday morning May 25, 2005 at St. Joseph's Hospital after a courageous battle with cardiac disease. Jim was born April 8 1937 in Tampa, Florida the son of the late Jacob and Helen Brennan Lublin. He married his wife, C. JoAnne Saunders Lublin, on July 18, 1964 and they would have celebrated their 41st Wedding Anniversary on July 18, 2005. Jim was a loving and devoted Husband, Father, and Pop Pop who loved taking care of his family and home and he cherished the time he spent with his family. LUCAS John A.
D-Day Veteran
Age 95, of Elmira, NY, died on Saturday, October 27, 2007, at the Bath
VA Hospital. Born June 6, 1912, Mildred, Pennsylvania, to the late Joseph
and Rose Lucas, both of Lithuanian heritage. Also predeceased by his wife,
Mary V. (Rusin) Lucas; sister, Anne Kline. He is survived by son, Richard,
a combat journalist living in Aix-en-Provence, France; and brother, Albert
Lucas of Elmira; nephews, nieces, and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
John served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1941 through 1945. He was
in the infantry and received two Bronze Stars, the World War II Victory
Medal, American Campaign Medals, and the American Defense Service Medal.
John celebrated his 32nd birthday in a landing barge heading toward Omaha
Beach with the 116th Combat Infantry Regiment. He went on to fight in the
Battle of the Bulge and the Fall of Berlin. After the War, he moved to
Elmira and was employed by Thatcher Glass Mfg. Co.; he retired in 1978
with 35 years of service. He was an active member of St. Cecelia Catholic
Parish. Throughout his life he was an avid outdoorsman. He took up painting
and participated in many local and regional exhibitions where his wildlife
and landscape paintings received praise and admiration. He became well-known
for his paintings of upstate New York and of Sullivan County in the old
days, many from memory of those good years. John loved to travel, he toured
Europe and especially enjoyed his visit to his ancestral home of Lithuania.
In 2002, he was invited as a special guest by the French Army to ceremonies
held at the 8th Paratroop Regiment where he was honored for his participation
in the Normandy Invasion. Friends may call at the BAKER FAMILY FUNERAL
HOME on Sunday, November 4, from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial
will be held at St. Peter and Paul's Church, Elmira, on Monday, November
5, at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Walter Wainwright, Celebrant. Interment will follow
in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, with Full Military Honors. Flowers are welcome
or those wishing may make memorials to a charity of one's choice.
LUCE - SPIRAWK, Mabel L.
Age 85, formerly of W. 17th Street, Elmira Heights, died Saturday,
November 24, 2007, at the Brightonian Nursing Home in Rochester, NY. She
was born April 26, 1922 in Glasgow, WV, the daughter of Denton L. and Mae
Richards Luce. She married William E. Spirawk on October 16, 1948 in Oakwood
United Methodist Church. She was a secretary for Spirawk Appliances in
Elmira Heights, and was a longtime member of Oakwood United Methodist Church
and its Dockstader Circle. She was a member of the Home Bureau, the Neighborhood
Craft Club, and the Elmira Heights Historical Society. Mabel enjoyed collecting
Depression Glass. She is survived by a daughter, Carol (Naphtali) Hoffman
of Rochester; a son, David (Linda) Spirawk of Corning; three grandchildren,
Leah Hoffman of Baltimore, MD, Amanda Spirawk of Rapid City, SD, Brandon
Spirawk of Elmira; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her
father, Denton in 1969; her mother, Mae in 1962; and her husband, William
on January 25, 1988. Family and friends are invited to call at Ballard
and Lindgren Funeral Home, 161 Oakwood Ave., Elmira Heights, NY, on Wednesday,
November 28, 2007, from noon until 2 p.m., where a funeral service will
be held 2 p.m. at the conclusion of visitation. Burial will be in Woodlawn

Grace Luckey Brewer, 96, of RD 2, Millerton (Mosherville), PA died
Friday, August 9, 1991. Grace was a former waitress at S. F. Iszard Co.
and retired from the Tom Sawyer Restaurant. She was a member of Mosherville
Bible Church. She is survived by daughter, Berdena Strong, at home; grandchildren,

LUMBARD - VOGEL
Emily E. (Lumbard) Age 89, of Bethany Manor, Horseheads, New York,
peacefully slept away on August 22, 2005. She was born in Elmira, NY on
May 22, 1916 to the late Elmer and Martha (Roemmelt) Lumbard. She was predeceased
by her husband, Frank P. Vogel; brother, George and wife, Helen Lumbard;
brother, Norman Lumbard; niece, Betty Lumbard DeVore; and also brothers-in-law,
Herman, William and Ludwig Vogel, Sidney Shoemaker and John Prapestis.
Emily is survived by niece, Lois (Glenn) Cooper; and a nephew, Richard
Lumbard both of Elmira; along with nieces and nephews, great-nieces and
nephews, and several great-great-nieces and nephews and cousins. Also surviving
are four sisters-in-law, Clara Lumbard Peroski, Mert Vogel, Louise Shoemaker
and Marie Prapestis; and brother-in-law, Emil (Betty) Vogel of Buffalo,
NY; and lifelong friend, Frieda Carpenter; two special neighbors and caregivers,
Marlene (Chuck) LeMark and JoEllen (Ron) Hawley, both of Elmira. Emily
was a life member of the First United Church of Christ and a devoted member
of the Monday Morning Women's Guild. Family and friends are invited to
call on Friday, August 26th, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral
Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. with Reverend Jane Winters
officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
LUNDY Henry A lifelong Elmira resident and respected area business leader, died at his home in Elmira on Tuesday, June 27, 2006. Henry was born on May 9, 1916, the eldest child of Harry and Anna Larson Lundy and the grandson of immigrants from Sweden. He attended Hendy Avenue School and the Elmira Free Academy. He was associated with Hardinge Bros., Inc., for over 30 years, starting in the drafting department and working into sales and sales management, before being appointed Vice President for Sales in the 1950's. He met his wife of 65 years, the former Phyllis Wombough, at Hardinge when she worked in the accounting department in 1938. In the 1960's, he joined Dura-Bilt Products in Bentley Creek, PA, where he held various executive positions and served on the Board of Directors. In his later years with the company, he drew on his talents as a photographer and produced advertising materials before retiring in 1996 at the age of 80. Henry was an avid nature photographer and was known for his striking photographs of birds and flowers. He and Phyllis and their family lived in West Elmira, where Phyllis still resides, and were members of Bethany Lutheran Church and former members of the Audubon Society, Tanglewood Nature Center and the Elmira Country Club. The couple enjoyed traveling and visited many countries in Latin America, Europe and Africa. Henry is also survived by three children, Anne (John) Welch of Reston, VA, John (Beth) Lundy of Moore, SC, and Sunset Beach, NC, and Karen Davidson of Elmira; three grandchildren, David (Jessica) Mark Welch of Falmouth, MA, Cheryl (Paul) Dillard of Richmond, VA, and Megan Lundy (Mitchell Hoffman) of Stamford, CT; and five great-grandchildren, Leah, James and Timothy Dillard, and Daniel and Andrew Mark Welch. Henry was predeceased by a sister, Eleanor Wagner of Elmira; and is survived by a brother, Carl (Doris) Lundy of Hammondsport; three sisters, Esther Hammond of Horseheads, Evelyn Manth of Williamsville, NY, and Marjorie Thompson of Nashville, TN. His family also includes several nieces and nephews. Howard was born October 2, 1911 in Elmira, NY, the son of Howard and Louise Coughlin Lutes. the Southern Tier Amateur Radio Repeater Society. He was a retired meat
cutter and for many years operated a meat market at 56 Penna. Ave."

–NELLIE ELIZA –Mrs. William Nicol, 173 N. Center Street, Canton observed
her 100th birthday on April 26, 1967. (She died June 14, 1970, Canton,
PA and buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, NY.) She resides with
her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Powel. Mrs. Nicol,
the former Nellie E. Lyon was born at Armenia Mountain. She lived
many years at Fall Brook and was employed in the “company Store” there.
She later moved back to Armenia. Her husband died in 1939 and she
has resided with her daughter since then. Mrs. Nicol is active, alert
and enjoys life. She received a congratulatory telegram from President
L. B. Johnson on her birthday. This was an impressive surprise to
the centenarian. Mrs. Powel entertained at two dinners and luncheons
in honor of her mother. Among the guests were; Mrs. and Mrs. Carl
Sykora, Germania, William Kibbel, Dansville, N.Y., Mrs. T. M. Sprague,
Corning, N.Y., Mrs. E. Fitzwater and Mrs. Williams Ayres, Elmira, N.Y.
and Mrs. Claude C. Lyon, Troy. Several long distance telephone calls
were received by Mrs. Nicol; Mrs. L. M. Dayton, N. Dartmouth, Mass., Mrs.
Mary Falvey, Buffalo, N.Y., Mrs. E. Diehr, Blossburg. The honored
guest had many callers; Mrs. Laura Wilcox, Mrs. Dean Seeley, Mrs. William
Riggs, Mr. and Mrs. John Jenkins and Frances Laninger. She received
many beautiful cards, gifts and flowers. One floral arrangement was
from a grandnephew in Germany. The community extends greetings to
this outstanding resident who has reached her 100th birthday.
