| Reading a series of obituaries from a single
cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational
history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular
time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives
and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade"
or business.
All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. the Green Mountain Boys, celebrated for their bravery in the Revelutionary
war. Her mother’s ancestors came from Holland. Mrs. Hanyen
went to Elmira, N.Y., to live when a young girl, and was educated in the
Misses Thurston’s Private School for Girls. Her marriage to C. B.
Hanyan, a prosperous merchant of Elmira, took place on February 18, 1863.
They lived to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary; Mr. Hanyen
passing away the following September. For forty years Mrs. Hanyen
had resided in Rutland, and during that time had endeared herself to a
host of friends. Her beautiful christian life, so full of devoted
service to her Master; so replete with kindly deeds for her friends; and
so unselfishly and lovingly given to her family, will not soon be forgotten,
but its influence will be felt for years. As long as strength would
permit, she was an earnest, active worker in the Methodist church.
For many years she taught a class of young ladies in the Sunday school.
It was a source of great pleasure to her, at each succeeding Christmas
time to receive messages of love from her Sunday school “girls” of long
ago. Throughout her long live, Mrs. Hanyen had always enjoyed good
health. Her death was caused by natural decline, and her passing
out was quiet and peaceful. She is survived by two daughters, M.
Louise Hanyen, at home; Mrs. Lewis M. Palmer, of Mansfield, Pa., and two
sons, Attorney Fred C. Hanyen, of Scranton, Pa., and Prof. C. B. Hanyen,
Jr., of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; also one sister and three brothers, Mrs. Celia
Bronson and W. H. Reynolds of Rutland; John Reynolds and C. F. Reynolds,
of Tioga Pa. The funeral services were held from the late home, Monday,
April 2nd, conducted by Rev. C. D. Purdy, of Mansfield Methodist
Church. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery, Elmira, N.Y. The

RIPLEY - YOUNG, Eleanor M. (Ripley)
Formerly of Mt. View Drive, Pine City, slipped away quietly with her
family at her bedside, early Good Friday morning, March 21, 2008. Born
February 16, 1918, in Elmira, NY, she just celebrated a grand 90th birthday
with 50 friends and relatives. Her kind, loving spirit touched everyone
she met. She was ever faithful to her Lord and her family and led us all
through her fine example of Christian living. She was a lifelong member
of the Elmira Wesleyan Church, active in teaching, missionary ladies work
and she loved her church suppers as much as Dad hated them. She owned Eleanor
Young Sewing Service for 20 years and many Elmira homes are graced with
her beautiful custom made draperies, slipcovers, quilts and most recently
handmade patch work pillows. Residents and friends who stopped by to visit
would leave with a beautiful pillow. Her poems and limericks always brought
a laugh and sometimes a tear or two. She is predeceased by her husband
of 65 years, Elden "Pud" (2005). She was the daughter of the late Jay and
Viva Ripley; and brothers, Alan, Carrol, Ronald and Thurman. She is survived
by sons, Blair (Chris) and Mark (Jane) of Millerton, PA, Larry (JoAnn)
of Elmira, NY; and daughter, Marcia (Felix) Lukenbill of Corning, NY. Also,
loving sister, Sharon Oliver of Elmira, NY; six grandchildren, nine step
grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 14 step great-grandchildren.
The family's heartfelt thanks go to the staff of the Chemung County Nursing
Facility, especially the 4th floor staff, for helping us escort her through
these days with dignity. Contributions can be made to the CCNF Resident
