Joyce's Search Tip - January 2008

Do You Know that you can search just the Obituaries on the site by using the three County Specific Obituary selections in the Partitioned search engine at the bottom of the Current What's New Page? You can narrow your search by including a key word in the cemetery name or a township name in addition to the surname you search. Then select the Find All Words option.
You'll also find obituary and other newspaper clippings using Clippings partition. Additional clippings can be found in the Birth, Marriage, and some other partitions.
Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business.

All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and  for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. Tice (JoyceTice@aol.com)

"DEATH OF FREDERICK SCHWEPPE.
His Long Illness Terminated Yesterday Noon.

"At noon yesterday occurred the death of Frederick Schweppe, one of Elmira's best known German citizens
and businessmen. Mr. Schweppe had been ill since last January and although his strong constitution and determined will made a great struggle against death, a complication of diseases preyed upon his vitality until he was forced to lay down the contest and quietly passed into rest.
Mr. Schweppe was fifty five years of age, having been born in Germany near Hanover April 4, 1837. He came to this country in July, 1865, and spent nine years in and about New York city working at his trade as a fresco painter. In 1874 he was sent to this city by his employer to fresco the Second national bank. Upon the completion of this work he decided to remain in Elmira and soon established the business which has now grown to quite extensive proportions. He was ever an upright businessman, a public spirited citizen, a courteous gentleman and a faithful friend. He was married in Germany to Eleanore Johansmeyer and they have had six children of whom two sons Fred, jr., and Henry, and two daughters, Mrs. [William] Jacob Duhl and Miss Laura, with his wife survive him. Mr. Schweppe was a member of the Masons, I.O.O.F., and B.P.O.E., and the Saengerbund, all of which organizations will attend the funeral in a body. The funeral will be held to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, and will probably be in charge of the Masonic order."

Surname at birth: Schweppe. Date of death: Sunday, Oct. 2, 1892.

"BURIAL OF FREDERICK SCHWEPPE.
It Was Held This Morning and Was Very Largely Attended.
"The funeral of the late Frederick Schweppe, one of this city's most honored citizens, was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the family residence on Carroll Street. The obsequies were among the most largely attended ever held in this city, which attests the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The members of the Elmira lodge, No. 62, B.P.O. Elks, Union lodge, No. 95 and Elmira Saengerbund, of which societies the deceased was a member, attended the funeral in a body. The funeral sermon was preached by the Rev. T.K. Beecher in his usual touching and impressive manner. The Elmira Saengerbund sang several appropriate hymns. At the conclusion of Mr. Beecher's remarks, the Masons took charge of the remains and performed their burial ritual.     The floral offerings were many and most beautiful. The Elks sent a most magnificent design, in the form of an Elk's head. The head was composed of tube roses, the antlers being of purple pansies. The head is surrounded by a broken wreath of blush roses, and at one end is tied a lavender satin ribbon bearing the letters of the order. The back ground of the beautiful design is composed entirely of ivy leaves with a border of exquisite pink roses. Among the other floral designs are a large spray of white roses from Mrs. F. Hager; a basket of La Pearle roses and ferns from Mr. and Mrs. William Singerhoff; a large pillow bearing the inscription "Father" from the family; bouquet from Mrs. Gohring; a cycle of yellow roses on a large standard composed of ferns from Mrs. Louis Sheidlen and sister, Miss Emma Sheidlen; a wreath of flowers, Mrs. Henry Haupt and Mrs. John Duhl; a basket of beautiful cut flowers from Mrs. Louis Freudenheim and Mrs. C.D. Metzger; lyre from the Saengerbund; sheaf of wheat from Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kennedy; large floral design from the German Democratic club of which the deceased was an earnest member; spray of white roses and white carnations from Mr. and Mrs. John Young; bouquet from Mrs. Franz Zimmerman; a design in the shape of a harp from Mr. and Mrs. Herman Heine. There were besides these, elegant designs from the Masons and Saengerbund societies. The pall bearers were masons. The funeral cortege was one of the largest ever seen in the city. The interment was in Woodlawn cemetery."
