| Reading a series of obituaries from a single
cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational
history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular
time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives
and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade"
or business.
All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. ACTIVE LIFE COMES TO END Fred Schornstheimer, One of City’s Most Esteemed
Business Men, Takes His Life in Fit of Despondency.
Fred SCHORNSTHEIMER, one of Elmira’s best known citizens, residing
in apartments at Lake and Clinton streets, was found dead yesterday afternoon
at his home. Mr. Schornstheimer was discovered in the bath room with his
jugular vein severed. He had taken his life with a sharp bread knife. It
is said that Mr. Schornstheimer has been despondent for some time past.
He suffered a paralytic seizure four years ago and has been in ill health
since. Three months ago Mr.Schornstheimer sustained a fractured leg as
the result of a fall down the stairs at his home. He suffered a second
paralytic attack a short time ago. Mr. Schornsteimer at one time was county
clerk. He also served as president of the Elmira Wholesale Grocery Company.
For some time he was associated with Adam Stampp in the Schornsteimer and
Stampp grocery store at Lake and Clinton streets. The business changed
hands some time ago. Mr. Schornsteimer was sixty years old. He was born

Lodge, No. 95, F & A.M. many years. Mr. Schornstheimer was highly esteemed
by a wide circle of friends. He was one of Elmira’s substantial business
men, and a loyal citizen. Ill health gradually undermined his strong constitution,
and of late of the most part he has been confined to his home. The change
from active business life had a depressing effect. Elmirans acquainted
with Fred Schornstheimer knew him to be a man of many good qualities. He
was loyal and charitable, possessing a happy nature, which endeared him
to all who had the honor of his acquaintance. The funeral will be held
at the family home Friday at 2:30 p.m. and will be private. The Rev. R.
Vieweg will officiate and burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery in the family

"DEATH OF FREDERICK SCHWEPPE.
His Long Illness Terminated Yesterday
Noon.
"At noon yesterday
occurred the death of Frederick Schweppe, one of Elmira's best known German
citizens
and businessmen. Mr. Schweppe had
been ill since last January and although his strong constitution and determined
will made a great struggle against death, a complication of diseases preyed
upon his vitality until he was forced to lay down the contest and quietly
passed into rest.
Mr. Schweppe was
fifty five years of age, having been born in Germany near Hanover April
4, 1837. He came to this country in July, 1865, and spent nine years in
and about New York city working at his trade as a fresco painter. In 1874
he was sent to this city by his employer to fresco the Second national
bank. Upon the completion of this work he decided to remain in Elmira and
soon established the business which has now grown to quite extensive proportions.
He was ever an upright businessman, a public spirited citizen, a courteous
gentleman and a faithful friend. He was married in Germany to Eleanore
Johansmeyer and they have had six children of whom two sons Fred, jr.,
and Henry, and two daughters, Mrs. [William] Jacob Duhl and Miss Laura,
with his wife survive him. Mr. Schweppe was a member of the Masons, I.O.O.F.,
and B.P.O.E., and the Saengerbund, all of which organizations will attend
the funeral in a body. The funeral will be held to-morrow afternoon at
2 o'clock, and will probably be in charge of the Masonic order."
