Joyce's Search Tip - January 2008

Do You Know that you can search just the Obituaries on the site by using the three County Specific Obituary selections in the Partitioned search engine at the bottom of the Current What's New Page? You can narrow your search by including a key word in the cemetery name or a township name in addition to the surname you search. Then select the Find All Words option.
You'll also find obituary and other newspaper clippings using Clippings partition. Additional clippings can be found in the Birth, Marriage, and some other partitions.
Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business.

All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and  for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. Tice (JoyceTice@aol.com)

WELLS - Miss BEATRICE WELLS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Verne Wells Killed Residents of Mansfield, Covington and Canoe Camp were shocked Saturday morning when it was reported that Miss Beatrice Wells, whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Verne Wells, were born and raised in this locality, and Miss Leona Ten Eyck, a graduate of Mansfield High School, had been instantly killed while driving an automobile across the tracks at Hudson street, in Elmira, by fast Erie express train No. 1001, from New York. The following particulars were gleaned later: Miss Beatrice Wells, aged 22 years, of 805 Holdridge street, was fatally injured Friday when the automobile she was driving was demolished by Erie passenger train No. 1001, at the Hudson street crossing of the Erie Railroad. Miss Wells died in St. Joseph Hospital shortly after being received there. Miss Leona Ten Eyck, aged 19 years, of 803 1/2 Holdridge street, miraculously escaped serious injury. It was reported from the hospital Saturday that Miss TenEyck was suffering from lacerations of the right cheek, lower lip, and right leg, and contusions on the right thigh. Several witnesses to the tragedy declared that the gates were not lowered at the time the car was driven on to the crossing. W. C. Walker, of 454 Spaulding street, the gate-tender, was detained several hours by the authorities, Friday evening, when a preliminary hearing was conducted at the police headquarters by Coronor Tracy Hamilton, who later released Walker in the custody of the plice. At the timeof the accident Miss Wells was driving Miss Ten Eyck to her home from Meeker's Business College, where she is a student. Miss Ten Eyck usually makes the trip each day, but when it was not convenient to do so on this Friday, Miss Wells drove from her home, picked up her friend at the Business College, and was taking her home. No other passengers were in the car. One witness stated that he was waiting in his automobile on the west side of the track for the gates to be raised. When a switch engine went into the Hygeia Refrigerating Company's switch and stopped, the crossing bars were raised, he stated. He had started his machine when he saw Miss Wells drive up on the tracks from the east. The approaching train was then between Henry street and Hudson street. Before Miss Wells could drive out of its path, her car was struck. The pilot of the locomotive carried the auto to Chemung place before it fell to one side. It was a mass of battered wreckage. The occupants of the automobile were taken to the office of the Elmira Builders' Supply Company, and a motor patrol was soon on the spot. It appears that there is a steep grade of more than six feet, encountered before driving upon the Hudson street crossing. The watch tower is so placed, with nearby buildings on the south side of Hudson street, that a view of the tracks south is obstructed. Drivers are entirely dependent on the crossing watchman being strictly on the job. The Erie passenger train that smashed into the young ladies was one of the fast through trains, and was in charge of Conductor J. J. Conners, of Buffalo, with Engineer Harry Morton, of Hornell, and E. J. Clark, also of Hornell, fireman. J. O. winslow, Erie Claim Agent, is conducting a thorough investigation. Mr. and Mrs. Wells, parents of Miss Wells, were on a business trip to Binghamton when the accident occurred. They intended to visit the Broome County Fair, after Mr. Wells had transacted his business, but as soon as the dispatch reached them of the accident, a fast motor brought them back to Elmira. The deceased was well known to many in this locality, where she has many relatives and friends. Mrs. H. F. Goodall, a clerk in the Rose store, is an aunt, Wade and Howard Goodall, of Mansfield, are cousins. Mark Youmans is also an uncle of Miss Wells. She was a popular member of Elmira's younger set. Through her genial disposition and kindly ways, she won the respect and friendship of everyone with whom she came in contact. She was born in Elmira, and attended the local schools and the Elmira Academy, graduating with the class of 1924. She also took a post graduate course in the South Side High School. For the past two years she has been associated with her father as stenographer and book-keeper, he being a building contractor. Miss Wells was always prominent in church work. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Elmira. She was also a Sunday school teacher and had charge of the cradle roll. The funeral was held at the church Monday afternoon, the pastor, Rev. A. M. Baird, officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Besides her parents, Miss Wells is survived by two brothers, Stanley and Durland, a grandmother, Mrs. Alta Youmans, of Wellsboro; a grandfather, John Wells, of Mansfield; also several aunts, uncles and cousins. Miss Ten Eyck is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Ten Eyck, of Elmira, former residents of Mansfield, and a one-time student of the Teachers' College. She was a very close friend of Miss Wells.

"J PHILIP WEYER is Dead After Extended Illness.
"Venerable Elmira Resident, After Two Years of Ill Health, Dies at the Family Home Here--One of the Founders of the German Evangelical Church.
"After an illness of two years or more, the venerable J. Philip Weyer died this morning at the long time family home, No. 517 William street.
Philip Weyer was born in a little village on the Rhine in Germany, Ingelheim, April 26, 1836, so that he [illegible, died?] in his 82nd year. When he was twenty years old, Mr. Weyer came to Elmira, direct from his home town. He was induced to come here, to the then village, by his brother, some-what older, the late Jacob Weyer, for many years associated with the grist mill at the Bulkhead bearing his name, while the railroad crossing south of the Bulkhead is still known as Weyer's. At the time young Philip came here, his brother was making brick in a clay yard on Sullivan street, north of East Clinton street. In a few years Jacob sold out to his brother and located at the Bulkhead, where he built his grist mill about 1860. Jacob Weyer died many years ago, while yet a young man. The mill is still in existence.
In the northern part of the city there is a notable depression between Lake street and the foot of East Hill, and there Philip Weyer established another brick yard, where he had discovered a splendid grade of blue clay, and this he developed until the clay deposit became exhausted in 1896, after years of working, the excavation making what has long been known as "Weyer's Pond." This pond is always full, being fed by scores of natural springs of the purest water. From this pond was taken the ice supply of the city, in a large degree, for many years, by a company in which Mr. Weyer was interested.
When the clay deposit gave out in the yard, Mr. Weyer's company established another brick making plant, using shale from East Hill, where he located. This business was continued until that and the Horseheads company united under the name "Consolidated Brick Co. of Horseheads," about ten years ago, when, at the age of seventy-two, Mr. Weyer retired from all business activities, and there after, lived as he had desired, a peaceful and undisturbed life, reposeful and surrounded by his devoted family in a home of ample comforts.
Mr. Weyer had but two civic positions. He was a school commissioner at large during 1884 to 1886, an appointment by the Common Council, and he was a park commissioner for two terms under one of the administrations of former Mayor Daniel Sheehan.
Mr. Weyer was a member and one of the founders of the German Evangelical church in Elmira, and assisted in the erection of the first edifice on East Church street, and the present conspicuous house of worship on Madison avenue.
In 1861 Mr. Weyer took to wife Miss Albertine Pautz, whose parents were well known citizens of Elmira, and there came to them five children, one of whom, Emma, died in 1889, at the age of eighteen years. There survive his widow; Laura E. and Dora M. at home; Julia, who is the wife of City Judge David N. Heller, and Otto W., who is in the lumber business in Buffalo.
[text missing] "largely assisted in the upbuilding of Elmira, having for nearly 50 years been active in his business pursuits and at all times gaining the respect and confidence of the community. He was a man not given to exuberant demonstrations, but in a quiet way made himself felt. He was a home man. He loved his fireside, and that is a supreme test of the character of any man--for it is the tie that binds that is blest. Therefore, when the books are written and the acocunt closed there can be found opposite the name of Philip Weyer--"He was faithful, he was upright; he was beloved at home, and he lavished love in return. 'Tis enough."
Thus passes into eternal rest another one of the stable citizens whose name will long be linked with the history of Elmira.
The funeral of J. Philip Weyer will be held at the family home Friday, at 3 p.m. The remains will be removed to Buffalo for cremation."
