Subj:    {not a subscriber} KNOWLTON, STRADLEY, MILLER, CARPENTER
Date:   6/7/2001 11:23:20 AM Eastern Daylight Time
From:   master@pdcbiz.com (David H. Carpenter)

Greetings everyone,

I'm trying to find more information about my grandmothers family.  Here's the catch, on her death certificate it gives here parents as Levi MILLER and Cora STRADLEY.  But on the other hand, in my grandfather Howard N. CARPENTER's Obituary,  it reads "he first married Ada COOLIDGE who died in 1926, then he married Esther KNOWLTON of Marshlands."  That's where I get too.  Esther was born in 1894 in PA somewhere, I believe it was Tioga but not sure.  I did find information on a Levi Henry MILLER in one of the Cenus 1880 Gaines but can't verify that this was her father.  I thought they were living in Marshlands at the turn of the century, but I did not find anything close when
I typed in the Gaines Township 1908/9 directory and nothing so far in Charleston either.  My father Howard C. CARPENTER remembers 1 sister of Esther's, Isora ? HALL, who lives or lived in Ohio in her later years.  He also remembers an Uncle named John.  Now, I did find a John H. STRADLEY and Lestie D. STRADLEY living in the area at the right time period.  I also found them listed on a page in my grandfather's Funeral Book.  There were also a Dorothy MILLER listed, but no KNOWLTON's.  As far as I know, my grandmother was only married twice, according to my dad, once to Howard N. CARPENTER (sometime between 1926-1928) and the other to Bernard CAMPBELL (sometime after 1945) when they family moved here to Wisconsin in the late 1940's.  My other idea is that she married a KNOWLTON who she either divorced or he was killed in WWI.  I
believe my grandmother's full name at birth was Esther Ann MILLER.  Looking for any information on the family.

From: PN999@aol.com

I'm trying to identify the date of death and final resting place for Jane A. MOSHER born 27 February 1824; Jane was the daughter of Nicholas and Hannah SOPER Mosher.

Jane A. MOSHER married George K. RUSSELL 28 February 1821 in Columbia, Bradford, Pennsylvania. They had children named Mary, frances, Will, Ellen, George, Rose, Julia, Martha and Charles. The Russell family removed to Armenia Township about 1850 and husband,George, died there 30 April 1891.

The last record I have of Jane MOSHER Russell is the 1900 Directory of Bradford County where she's listed on Main Street, Gillett, Pennsylvania.Jane is apparently living with/near her son, Charles H. Russell.

Date: 6/6/2001 12:25:24 AM Eastern Daylight Time
From: markd@city-net.com (Mark Daly)

1. Patrick MORONEY, b abt 1822 in Co Clare Ireland, and his wife Barbara WHITE emigrated between 1850 and 1855. Settled in Elmira, Chemung Co, NY.
Their children included:

2. Mary Teresa MORONEY was born 17 Oct 1850 in Co Clare, Ireland, married James Martin DALY in 1876 and had 6 children. The family lived in Elmira then later moved to Sayre, Bradford Co, PA where she died in 1928.

3. Bridget MORONEY was born in 1855 NY (probably Elmira) and died in 1932 with no issue.

4. James MORONEY was born abt 1858 NY and died young.

The mother, Barbara, was not present for the 1860 census.  Family stories say my gr-grandma, Mary T, didn't talk much about her family.

Anyone with  MORONEYs or MARONEYs in the Elmira area during this period?

Thanks,
Mark

Subj:  [Tri-Counties] GRADY - Chemung Co NY -  1855-1880
Date: 6/6/2001 12:36:39 AM Eastern Daylight Time
From: markd@city-net.com (Mark Daly)

1. Patrick GRADY was born about 1816 in Co Clare, Ireland and married Mary DORRITY [sic], who was born about 1825 in Co Clare.  This may have been a second marriage for either or both Patrick &  Mary.  They had:

2. Jane A GRADY, born 27 Dev 1859 at the Village of Millport, Town of Veteran, Chemung Co, NY. She married Jeremiah Michael SHAY (1857-1937) about March 1880. Jerry probably worked for the New York Central RR at the time. Jane & Jerry moved about with different RRs, finally ending up in Towanda, Bradford Co, PA by 1904.  Jane died in 1926.  She had a fraternal twin that died as an infant.

For the 1880 census, Jerry & Jane were living with a Patrick (ae 42) & Bridget (ae 38) GRADY. Jane was 23 at the time though she was listed as a daughter. A Carrie A PARKS, age 17, was also listed as a daughter. Next door lived a Patrick (ae 60) and Mary (ae 58) GRADY... who  I suspect was Jane's real parents.

3. A "Mrs. James Lynch of Ithaca" came to Jane's funeral in 1926 and was listed as her sister.  No other mention of this woman has appeared elsewhere.

Any help identifying this Mrs. James Lynch or any help with where Roman Catholics living in Millport might have gone to church or been buried would be appreciated.  I know they could have taken the train to  Watkins Glen, or Horseheads or Elmira to church... but, which direction was more likely to be taken?

Thanks,
Mark Daly
