Chemung NY 1800s McKINNEY

Four McKINNEY siblings (parents Matthew McKINNEY + Elsje WELLER) migrated 1818 from Orange Co NY to Catharine, (then) Tioga, NY and settled later at Veteran town(ship) Chemung County. They were (our) John, Matthew, Jane (m. Stephen MILLSPAUGH) and Mary (m. Joseph WILSON).

The next few decades saw two more of the 13 siblings show up in Chemung County, Arthur and Timothy. By the 1850 US and 1855 NY census a good number of McKINNEY sons and grandsons were in Elmira as carpenters and joiners - building Elmira.

Post-Civil War saw a general dispersal of our McKINNEY clan. I understand that carpenters go where the building is. By late 19th century, the surname had all but disappeared in Chemung County. Where did they go?

Our specific line ended in daughters. I am very interested in finding McKINNEY males in our line to try to convince to participate in the McKINNEY DNA genealogy project found at McKINNEY-D@rootsweb.com mailing list.

Chemung NY: 3 WIVES of John HILL 1759 Ulster/Orange - 1849 Cayuta Chemung

According to grandmother, John had children by two wives. We know nothing of who were the in-laws nor where either is buried, or when died.

Sarah COLYER's children seem to have been:
Anna (Fanny) m. Peter WESTBROOK
Hugh m. Celestia/Calista ELLIS
Deborah m. Abner FLANDERS
Sacket m. Elizabeth SHOEMAKER

Sally/Sallie/Sarah THOMAS's children:
Joseph m. Mary Ann WEAVER and Elizabeth Wright JONES
Abner HILL - we don't know what became of him.
Morris m. Caroline PERRYMAN and Celine JOHNSON
Jemima m. Cornelius Brooks VanAUKEN

A third wife named only as "Elizabeth" was discovered in courthouse intestate-will administration papers, they had an "anti-nuptual" (divorce) 15 years prior 1849, so about 1834. There would not likely have been children. Is suspect, by census data, she may most likely have been WESTBROOK or SWARTWOOD.

Can anyone identify these wives? The first two may have been from Orange County, NY, may even have married there.

My Sally-Sarah was the daughter of Joshua Horton Sr and Lucy Thompson, of Sheshequin, Bradford County, PA.

Any info re these folks, their ancestors or descendants will be welcome. I have some but it is all from oral history and there are gaps.

David Bennett Hill Photo on eBay

Hi folks,
This isn't blitz related but thought I should post it in case any relatives of Governor Hill are on the list. I was doing a search on eBay for CDVs from Chemung and saw this one. I have no association with the seller or this sale.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10169&item=3514559864&r

"In stature rather below than above the average height, and somewhat sparely built, Senator Hill is, nevertheless, a giant among the representatives of that wing of the Democratic party that has no patience with the so-called reform methods of the Cleveland administration. He was born in Havana, Chemung ( now Schuyler ) County, New York, August 29, 1843. His first employment was as a clerk in a lawyer's office in his native village, and he afterward studied law in Elmira, and was admitted to the bar in 1864. He was appointed city attorney, and later was many times a delegate to the Democratic State Conventions, being president of those held in 1877 and 1881. He was also prominent in the Democratic National Convention of 1876 and 1884; was a member of the New York Legislature in 1870 and 1871; was elected Mayor of Elmira,NY in 1882, and in the same year was elected lieutenant governor on the ticket headed by Grover Cleveland. When Mr. Cleveland resigned in 1884, to become President of the United States, Mr. Hill succeeded him as Governor of New York, and in 1885 he was elected Governor for the full term of three years. In 1888 he was re-elected over Warner Miller, and in 1891 he was chosen United States Senator to succeed William M. Evarts. As a champion of Tammany, Senator Hill was opposed to the nomination of Grover Cleveland for a second presidential term in 1892, and has since vigorously antagonized the administration by his vote and influence in the Senate, defeating the President's favorite nominations. His bitterest political opponents admit his shrewdness and courage."

DARMSTADT, DARMSTED, DANIELS

I am looking for descendants of John (Johannes) DARMSTADT (DARMSTED), b 1824 in Germany, d 1897 and buried in Woodlawn Cem, Elmira. Family history says he immigrated to US ca 1845-50 (have found no record); married an Esther DANIELS, dau of A J DANIELS (have found no record); had a number of children - Emma (1856 - 1860) who is listed in a cemetery along the old NYC tracks fm Lawrenceville, Tioga Co to Lindley, Steuben Co; Mary Elizabeth b 1858, m John C KINGSLAND; John b 1864; Henry b 1866; Katherine b 1869; Christine b 1876.

I find a family listed as "DARMSTED" in the 1860 census of Lawrence Twp, Tioga Co, PA but no other census record of anyone in this family. The 1860 family c/o John, Esther and Emana matches ages for my John, Esther and Mary Elizabeth.

The only immigration/passenger list info I have found is at Ellis Is for Katherine and Christine returning from overseas visits.

But - they are all resident in Woodlawn w/o ever getting caught in a census other than 1860?

I'll be happy to hear from anyone who is connected or has any info.

Clark, Smith,Miller,Coons

Seeking information on Ebenezer P. Clark (b. 1781 Rhode Island (?) d. 1861 Wyalusing) who married Polly Smith, 1 Sep 1814. She was b. 30 Jul 1797, dau of Jessie Smith and Jane Miller.

Believe the P. means Pemberton, but not certain.

According to Heverley, Ebenezer did teaming work for Col Harry Spalding in Towanda.

Had 11 children. I know who all are. I am descended from #5, son Harry S. Clark.

Was executor for father's will Samuel Clark, who was shot by a deer hunter Nathan Coons.

Joyce's site has helped me so very much piece together information on my OWEN family. ALANSON OWEN was born about 1816 in Ridgebury, Pennsylvania according to his obituary. I believe he is the Alanson Owen listed in the 1840 census for Ridgebury Twp. He and his wife MARGARET THOMPSON moved to Genesee Co, Fenton Twp, Michigan around 1841-43.

I have put together the following tree which I believe is correct according to all the information I have been able to put together. If anyone has any additional information or corrections, please let me know.
