SMITH-FREEMAN-BUMP-CRANCE

Hoping to find some fellow SMITH researchers that may be able to help.

I am trying to get past EMILINE SMITH. Looking for and trying to confirm her parents. Inclosed are a lot of the questions and thoughts I go round and round with.

Emiline was born 1820/ 1821 in Pennsylvania according to 1850 through and including 1880 census records. Her son James' death certificate declares Williamsport. Which would be in Lycoming County, Pa.

But the same certificate for this son, James William BUMP or William James Bump, documents James as being born in 1836 which has him 10 years older than he actually is. James is in the 1850 Census with his parents, born in 1846. His name James "K" Bump. The 1860 census also lists James "K" Bump age 14. By 1870 James has changed his name dropping the K. and adopting William. Sometimes listed in documents as William James and other times James William BUMP.

Emilines first born son DANIEL FREEMAN BUMP. This pulling in the name FREEMAN which is a surname in the Potter County area of that era. Is there a SMITH -FREEMAN connection out there?

According to a 1926 Newspaper article Emiline was to have been the daughter of an Indian Medicine man of the Kickapoo Tribe. At the signing of the Peace Treaty between the US government and the Kickapoo Tribe in 1819 are listed among those that signed the document are Indians Kettatta and Keetshay who signed with a X and a Daniel D. Smith.

Emiline, James' mother, controlled as to how James' name was listed in the 1850 Census at the age of 4 and the 1860 Census at age 14 James K. Bump. Place of residence for these two early census recordings were Hector Township, Potter County, Pennsylvania. So why did James change his name did the K stand for Kickapoo, Keetatta or Keetshay possibly. And at that time it's better to pass for white drop anything pertaining to Indians? Yet the family was said to be proud to be of Indian blood.

With Emiline having a last name of SMITH I believe she may be the granddaughter of that Kickapoo Indian Medicine Man instead of the daughter for Indians of the tribe at that time did not have last names at the signing of the treaty. And was it a Daniel D. Smith that brought an Indian Maiden back to Pennsylvania as the rest of the tribe moved on? With the errors and changes was it maybe Wellsboro of Tioga County Pa instead of Williamsport of Lycoming Co Pa that Emiline may have been born, that also a misquote? Was the Daniel Smith who signed the treaty just a coincidence and her father another with the name of SMITH?

Another descendant researching has Emiline SMITH and Hazen BUMP's marriage at Westfield, Tioga County Pa 1 Nov 1840. And Emilines husband Hazen Bump, although abandoning a family in Indiana, had his parents and some siblings in 1840 Federal Census in Sweeden Township, Potter County Pennsylvania to return to.

And in 1850 Hazen and his brother Jacob are both in Hector Potter Co Pa. Emiline and Hazen meeting and marrying locally? Potter or Tioga Co PA?

Hazen was to have died in an accident involving a horse. Emiline then married Abraham CRANCE and they are found still in Potter County in 1860. In the 1870 Federal Census Emiline (SMITH) BUMP, now Mrs Abraham CRANCE and her husband are in Brookfield, TIOGA County, Pennsylvania. Post office Elkland. By 1880 they moved into Troupsburg, Steuben Co, NY. Abraham Crance was still with his parents in Westfield,Tioga Co in the 1850 Federal Census.

I have collected every SMITH, FREEMAN, and BUMP listed in the Potter/Tioga 1840 census. There are some Smith parents with young girls about Emilines age that may apply for Emiline. But there are still to many to determine who her parents may be.

Is there another SMITH researcher in the Potter/Tioga County area that may have sorted through these and found any SMITH/FREEMAN/BUMP combinations? Or located an Emiline born about 1820/1821?

Thanks,

MESSING - Bradford County

Researching the Messing family.

My great grandmother was Amelia Messing Dunbar, born in Germany 1851 (according to the gravestone - however, my grandfather claimed she was born in 1853) and died in 1941. She married Alonzo Dunbar and they lived in Big Pond, Pennsylvania.

On Amelia's death certificate, it appears that her mother's maiden name is either Dulait/Dubait or possibly Dubert.

Her mother was Amelia, born August 24, 1821 and died March 24, 1888 and is buried in the Union Cemetery in East Smithfield. All the many years we put flowers on another great grandmother's grave in that cemetery and never knew that the Messing grands were buried there also. Thank you for that information, Joyce, and all those wonderful volunteers!

The father was Dilmon Messing, born February 21, 1813 and died May 21, 1876.

They all came from Germany. I have extensive notes on another Messing family from Dienfort, (I bet that is spelled incorrectly) Germany. This is not the same family. The only information I have is Saxony, Germany.

Would appreciate any information on this family.
Thanks. Joyce Dunbar Angotti, joyced@kai.net

MOORE GLEASON KISER BURK

When I first accessed this site I asked for assistance in finding my grandmother's family and with they assistance of several of you kind researchers found the JOHN GLEASON family back to Thomas Gleason in MA. However, I have not been able to find any information about Susan/Susannah KIZER, wife of John Gleason, mother of Cora Bell GLEASON MOORE who was born in Tioga in 1864. The Gleasons are found in the 1870 census in KS and in the same county is a Nicholas KIZER - but I can find no connection with the two. Is any researching this family? Would also appreciate any help finding the parents of Nancy Burk b. 1852 in PA - don't know where - but she was the wife of John MOORE ( and he is my major brick wall! There were 285 John MOOREs in a 25 year period in Western, PA!!!!! )

Thanks in advance. Joyce Moore Young, jyoung325@aol.com - in FL

MURDOCH, PRATT, ANDRUS, BALCOM

I also would like to thank Joyce and her amazing volunteers for the work they do, I truly do appreciate all their work. I for one could not begin to pay for the time they put in. THANK YOU! 1. Rev. David MURDOCH is my GGGgrandfather m. Elizabeth Bisset. he was the minister for the First Presbyterian Church in Elmira, NY. He was dismissed from the First Presbyterian Church in 1860 and there was a Public letter from the Rev. Murdoch explaining his side of the incident, I would like to find a way to get a cc of the letter if there is someone who is knowledgeable on how to do this. Elizabeth was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery. David died one year after his dismissal in 1861, I haven't been able to find out if he was buried at Woodlawn also. He also wrote, The doctrine of Caiaphas and illustrated by the Presbytery of Chemung, if there is a cc of this anywhere, I would like to have a cc also.

2. The PRATT and Murdoch merged with the marriage of Agnes MURDOCH to Harden deValson (H.D.V. PRATT 2nd) son of Harden de Valson PRATT and Mary C. Hillebrant. Agnes MURDOCH dau of John MURDOCH and Eliza Perkins ANDRUS. John and Eliza's home was at 306 West Gray St, Elmira NY and would like to know is the home is still there. The PRATT home was sold in 1947 to a Businessman in the area, he was a plumber I was told, is there a way I could find out if there may be a record of this any where. My brick wall is the father of Harden de Valson PRATT (#1) his father was Seth Harden PRATT m. Abigail BALCOM abt 1858 in Hulm, Allegheny NY dau of Joseph BALCOM and Sophia Cable. Any information appreciated. I have pictures of the MURDOCH home, Rev. David MURDOCH, Elizabeth Bisset Eliza Perkins ANDRUS, her father and mother William ANDRUS and Katherine Kellogg.

I would be more than happy to share cc's of pictures. I don't have family history such as the siblings on the families above, if there is any one of the same lineage out there that would like to exchange information I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you in advance,

MCCARTHY, CASEY, HICKEY, GRIFFEY, RYAN, QUINN, WILSON, CONWAY

All these people lived on South MOuntain just south of Canton, then later moved into Canton. Patrick McCarthy and wife, Anna Griffey, were there by 1850. HAMBLEY, WARD

William Hambley, his wife Elizabeth and their children arrived in Tioga Co PA from England c. 1879. Their daughter Beatrice married Allen Ward c. 1894.

Allen Ward was the son of Orrin Provin Ward & Paulina Wright Ward.

Orrin Ward was the son of Eliphalet Ward & Polly Case. Orrin served in the Civil War and Eliphalet served in the War of 1812.

Eliphalet & Polly had 11 children (according to info provided by their granddaugheter.) Apparently the oldest was Horace Ward who appears to have died by 1846.

Another son was Samuel Ward. I am looking for any information on the Ward family, and especially anything on these two sons, Horace & Samuel.

Apparently Eliphalet was the son of James Ward and Huldah Gibbs. James & Huldah migrated to PA from Connecticutt c. 1795.

Any info on James & Huldah would be greatly appreciated.

Price, Bacon, Spencer, Dingman

Seeking Enos Price, June 15, 1801--May 15, 1883.......buried Ulster Does anyone know where he came from when he came to Bradford County and what were his parents' names?

Seeking Orrilla (also Marilla) Price, born about 1804--died April, 1873.....buried Ulster
Her maiden name was Bacon. Her name appears in some records as Loralla.
Does anyone know her parents' names or any other information about that family?

Seeking Polly (also known as Ann) Dingman who married Samuel Rowland Spencer. She may have come from Otsego County in N Y State. I think she died about 1896 in Burlington. Does anyone know her parents' names?

Enos, Orrilla, and Polly (Ann) have been brick walls in my research for several years. If you have even a hint of information, do share it. It might offer a clue which would help me to chink away at those bricks.

Thanks to you and thanks to Joyce Tice for a great genealogy site.
