Hi: I am new to the Bradford County mailing list. I am looking
for descendants or anyone with family information on the descendants of
the above people, particularly: Jennie I. Walt was the daughter of Johnston
Walt and Kate Foster of Sayre Borough. They are buried at Tioga Point
Cemetery, Athens Borough, Bradford County, PA. I would like to find
ancestral data for Jennie Walt Blackman's family, and maybe Blackman descendants
may have more of the family story. I believe Johnston Walt ( b. August
1850) was my great grandfather's half-brother and was born in Perry County,
(Liverpool), PA. I believe Johnston followed the railroad to Sayre,
and there made his livelihood as a railroad employee. He was in Sayre
as of the 1900 US Census.
Jennie married into the Blackman family of this area and it appears
the Blackman family was a prominent, and a very early settled family in
Bradford County, migrating from New York state. Many of the Blackman
descendants appear to still be in the area.

I am looking for descendants of James BRICK and Mary Meskill who lived in North Towanda from about 1873 till their deaths in the early 1900s. Particularly interested in descendants of sons John, James, and Charles and daughter Margaret. Margaret married Martin E. LYNCH 2/21/1898. Martin died 5/1/1898. Margaret is in the 1910 census still as Lynch. She may have married a second time after 1910. The question is to whom. Charles is in 1920 census in Erwin, NY (Steuben Co.). In 1905 John was in Arkansas, James in Pittsburg, per their father's obituary. No further info on either John or James.

Hello Joyce, My name is Sally Blake. First I would like to tell you how wonderful and welcoming your web site is. I can't put into words the enjoyment I have had spending many evenings reading your web site. I am researching the names BENJAMIN & VINSON. I was able to visit the Court House in Towanda once but I was so new at this that I didn't really know what I was doing. (I still don't, I think.) One of the ladies there told me that researching the name BENJAMIN in Bradford County was like researching the name Smith in the rest of the country. I haven't verified much of this, but, I know my G Grandparents were ISAAC VINSON & MARGARET CHILSON and LEROY TELL BENJAMIN AND MARY BENJAMIN. I believe my GG Grandparents were ROBERT BENJAMIN AND DEBBIE DRAKE and ELIAS BENJAMIN AND HANNAH ACKLEY (ACLA ?). I think my GGG Grandparents were JOHN BENJAMIN AND MARY CHILSON. I am pretty sure most of these people were from Asylum Township or around that part of the county. I haven't gotten any farther than this and it will be a while before I can go to Bradford County again. I do know that I had a quite "colorful" uncle in, I believe, Camptown named William "Pete" Vinson. If anyone has any information to add to this or verify it I would appreciate it.
Thank you again for such a wonderful web site. Sally Blake

Hi. I'm looking for information about the ancestors of my great-grandmother, Winifred Clare Park, born June 30, 1885 in Bancroft, Nebraska. Families in her line include PARKS, SMITH, EASTMAN, RUSSELL and CHUBBUCK.
Winifred's father was Faylard Herbert Park, born February 11, 1855 in Bradford County, PA. He was the son of Nathaniel Parks, born Sept. 22, 1826. Nathaniel was a private in the Union Army, attached to Company G, 185th Regiment of the New York Volunteers. He was supposedly in Andersonville Prison but I've been unable to confirm that. He died August 31, 1891 and is buried in Rome Cemetery.
Faylard married Charlotte Ajustine Smith June 22, 1882 in Rome, PA. Charlotte, or Lottie A. as she is called in the 1880 census of Rome Village, was the daughter of Burton Alonzo Smith and Amanda Ellen Eastman. Burton, called Burton L. in the 1880 census, was the son of Eunice Russell and James Smith. Eunice was the daughter of Dan Russell and Polly Chubbuck.
I would greatly appreciate any information I can get on
these people.
Thank you,
Timothy D. James

My name is Ken Potter. I am seeking any information on Lucy M. TRIPP. She was born around 1829 in PA. I found her in the 1850 census living with Timothy and Lydia VINCENT in Bradford Co. According to Levi's pension files from the Civil War, she was a school teacher in Bradford Co. and they first lived on her fathers farm after getting married. Their children were: Clara (WALKER), Wendall, Leslie, Elizabeth, Lucy, Alice, and Albert. I am trying to find any information about her place of birth, parents and siblings names, and any other information possible. She died in Tioga Co. Dec. 23, 1877. Place of burial is unknown.

Beldon Herbert Gilbert Wilbur moved to Ridgesbury, Bradford County, PA, date unknown and married there (date Unknown) to Eliza Moore. Their son Simeon Elihu Lewis Wilbur was born in Ridgesbury on Nov. 9, 1865. I am interested in any further information on these people. I have nothing more on Eliza Moore. It is unclear if Beldon Herbert Gilbert Wilbur’s Father (Simeon Jr.) moved to Ridgesbury with family or if B. H. G. Wilbur moved there after he was out of the household. B. H. G. Wilbur’s father, Simeon Jr. died in Elmira, Chemung Co. NY. I noticed you have information from this area. Mr. Fanna Proper, Bradford Co. Library referred me to you after little success in adding to this information.

My grandfather, Bruce E. COBB, b. 18 July 1886, Bridgewater, Susq. Co. d. 14 July 1942, E. Smithfield, Bradford Co. was a veterinarian at the time of his death.
My question is I am wondering if anyone knows where his residence and/or office was. Since I was only 5 years old at the time of his death, I barely remember the residence, only that there was a stone, or some type of wall along the driveway. I don't remember if his veterinary office was in his home, near his home or where. I would like to obtain a picture of either/or both. Since I live in Florida, I would greatly appreciate it if I could find a volunteer who would be willing to do this for a small fee if I can get a location.
TIA for any help.

Hi Everyone,
I have copies of sworn statements of
two gentlemen in Canton PA, attesting to the character and condition of
my Great Great Grandfather Justice E. Brooks upon his application for pension
for his service in the Civil War. These documents were written in each
man's own hand writing, and were written about 1896. These men were neighbors
of my GGGrandfather. Upon his death in 1929, his widow lived at 48 Lycoming
Street, Canton, PA.
If any one is related to the following men, I would be glad to mail them copies of the statement they wrote, hopefully in exchange for a little information about the men who gave these statements in reference to my GGGrandfather. I am curious as to the neighbor's address in the years they were acquainted with him, their immediate family names and ages, their occupations and of course if you know of any connection between the two families.
The men's names appear to be:
DANIEL BRUCE, Canton, PA
and
MARTIN? CHAPMAN (possibly Chafman),
Canton, PA
Thanks so much for reading this,
Rhonda in NYS
Hi,
Just wondering if any one could help

Would 48 LYCOMING STREET, CANTON PA still be a valid address? And would the same house/building possibly still be there? Could someone provide directions of how to get there, or possibly take a photo of the location for me?
Thank you so much for your help,
Rhonda in NYS

Hello list,
Does anyone know of any Deming family
associated with the Grover/Canton, PA area circa (circa 1838-1920). I am
looking for a possible link from Deming to my grandmother, Verna Deming
Crandle, daughter of Job R. Crandle/Martha Rosette Barnes of the Canton/Grover,

for a friend of her parents, not a relative.
Thanks. JB Wilson, Beaverton, OR :-)

Hello again, Joyce
Almost three years have passed since I first asked
you for help regarding the McElhoe clan and my dead-end search in Bradford
County.
My great grandfather was George White McElhoe..now proven
by Mifflin County records to be the son of Samuel mcElhose. Samuel's
survival of the Wyoming Massacre was astonishing. I have that story from
two different published sources. I hope to prove Samuel volunteered
to serve in Washington's army at age 16, before the battle of Brandywine,
and that his father, Robert, volunteered later and they came together
to Tioga.
See Attachment 1.
In the first paragraph of "EARLY SETTLERS" [See Attachment 2.] ...reading about Benjamin Patterson who settled there in 1776, the next sentence says, "Nov. 7, 1788 he sold his possession here to Robert Mcilhoe, removed first to Chenango Forks, N.Y., thence to..." etc. It's all about Ben Patterson. No variation of the Mcilhoe surname is seen anywhere else in the histories of Tioga and Bradford County. Robert "McIlhois" is listed in the DAR record of veterans of the Revolution. In related papers I've collected, the spelling has gone from McElhoys, McIlhois, McElhoes, McElhose, and Muckelhose to Mcilhoe and McElhoe! I find no other mention of the family anywhere in the Tri-Counties resources.
They bought and sold property at Tioga. Samuel married and had several children there before moving to Mifflin County where I found County records very helpful. Surely there must be some records in Bradford County regarding this family that lived there 1778 to 1820!
If you can name someone to help me connect Samuel and Robert in Tioga I am willing to pay a Bradford County Historical Society membership fee AND a search fee!
Wm. DeGinder/DeKinder---Texas
Hi Joyce,
First I would like to compliment you on some of the finest web pages I have had the pleasure to visit. You have done a wonderful job and I wish my website looked as good. My name is Rick Wickwire and I have quite a few ancestors from Bradford County and other counties in Pennsylvania. Several of them are major brickwalls for me and I am writing to ask for help. My biggest problem is that I am in Trinidad, West Indies, working on a project and can't do much searching in Pennsylvania. I certainly am willing to pay for any help I get and am not asking for anything free.
I will copy what information I have below for your review. If you know of someone that may be able to help me, I would certainly appreciate it. I can have my son send a check for payment since he is in the US and I am not. Although I am working on two families specifically, any information found on my family would be welcome. I have visited all the Bradford County sites and several other PA sites and gathered much information already. There are some wonderful websites with some of the best info on the web.
The main thing I am looking for is the parents (and grandparents if possible) of Sterling Wickwire and Russell Ichabod Wickwire. I will copy what I know below:
Family number 1

Looking for info on Robert MCILHOE who purchased all holdings of Benjamin Patterson, fist white land owner in the Tioga region. (in TriCounties History of Bradford County) I have not found his name mentioned anywhere else in TriCounties resources as MCILHOE, MCILHOIS, MCILHOY, MCELHOE, MCELHOES, MCELHOSE, MUCKELHOSE...or any other variation thereof. Robert MCILHOIS is listed in the DAR Index of Patriots.
From other resources I know that Robert MCILHOE/MCELHOSE/MCELHOES went from the Brandywine River valley up to Tioga in 1778 after discharge from Washington's Army.
I have copies of documents of Mifflin County regarding
Robert's son, Samuel MCELHOSE and his children. Samuel's son,
George White McElhoe, is my great grandfather. Please help me
fill the gap between 1778 and 1820.

Hi Joyce,
Thanks so much for taking the
time to respond to my inquiry. You were right, my grandfather lived his
later life, &
passed away in Bradford, PA, McKean County. I had no idea
they were two different locations. With your help, I found him,
although I have to say, their site is nothing like yours.
Most of their cemeteries have no listings, & they don't have a fraction
of the info you do. I really enjoyed searching you site,
even thought it was in vain. I went through all the cemeteries you
have listed, that will teach me to be more careful to
get my facts straight! Keep up te good work, I hope other states,
counties & cities will follow your lead.
Thanks Again!
Kathy

I have received help in the past and hope that some one will be able to help me once again in tracing my Smith ancestors.
The 1840 census for Columbia Twp., Bradford Cnty., Pg. 281 shows an Ebenezar Smith in the 70-80 age brackett. There is a female in the home in the 60-70 age brackett.
Pg. 281 shows William Smith and wife, both in the 60-70 age brackett. My ggggrandparents William & Abigail McCracken Smith were born in 1770. Their son Howard S. Smith was born in Columbia Twp., Bradford Cnty., on May 10, 1810.
Pg. 280 shows Thomas Baldwin with an adult female, whom I believe is Lucy Hudson Smith, a daughter of William & Abigail Smith plus 6 children in the home. The 1850 census for Columbia Twp., shows William & Abigail Smith living in the home of Thomas & Lucy Baldwin.
Can anyone tell me if Ebenezar Smith was a sibling of William Smith or related in any way to William Smith? Any help will br greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I am interested in making contact with anyone who is researching the SPENCER or SIMPKINS families of Tioga and Bradford Counties. Siblings Polly Spencer Sellard and Jewett Spencer both came to the area in the early 1800's (Jewett in 1822) from Lyme, New London Co., CT. Jewett settled in Union Twp, Tioga Co., Polly in Bradford Co. A little later, Charles O. Spencer and Celia M. Spencer also came to the area from Connecticut. Charles lived very near Jewett and I believe they were probably related, my suspicion is that Charles is the son of Jewett's half brother. Anyway, Charles marries Joanna SIMPKINS and Celia marries George W. SIMPKINS (George was born in Canton, Bradford Co). Around 1850, George and Celia Simpkins moved to Boone Co., IL (along with Richard SIMPKINS who is probably a brother to George and Joanna).
Here's what I would like to know: How are Charles O. and Celia M. Spencer related to the other Spencers in the area? Who are their parents? How are the Simpkins in the area related and who are their parents? If you know anything at all about these families, please contact me.

Joyce,
I am trying to locate information on William Johnson/Johnston
and family. (wife Elizabeth/Betsey, sons Isaiah Y., Richard
L. and Harvey, and daughters Laura, Elizabeth, and one
other, name unknown.) Isaiah Y. Johnston also brought his wife
Cornelia. While in Sheshequin, Isaiah and Cornelia
had a son, Henry, born in 1838.
William and family appear on the 1840 census for Sheshequin,
Bradford Co. PA. They are listed under "William Johnson",
but the correct spelling of the surname was Johnston.
William and family came to Sheshequin area 1835-38. William,
wife, son Harvey, and daughter Laura left Bradford Co.
about 1843. Son Richard L. Johnston remained on the property and
married Mary, daughter of Oren Goodsell (1850 census,
Sheshequin). Harvey returned and married Ellen Russell in about
1851 and lived in Rome. Both Richard L. and Harvey
Johnston and families are buried in Bumpville Cemetery in Litchfield.
This family was related to brothers George W. Johnson/Johnston
and a Charles Johnson/Johnston also from the same area
of Bradford Co. PA.
I would like to know if you have any additional information
on these Johnson/Johnston families in your surname file?
Any help in location information on these families would
be greatly appreciated.

i am looking for the parents of a mary marsh (married to George
Gillis Keener) who named her first son SIMEON MARSH
KEENER born november 1, 1828 in venanago pennsylvania. the family
lived in venango pennsylvania before moving to Nebraska. They were

Simeon Marsh Keener after her father, but I can't find any proof to substantiate
it. Other names in Venango Pennsylvania were Joel Marsh and William

I am researching the Johnson family in bradford Co. I have Edward JOHNSON b. 1855, m. Almira HOOVER. They lived in Asylum twp and are buried in Terrytown cemetery.
Edwards father is Duncan JOHNSON. The only Duncan I can find on the site is in the 1850 census for Monroe Twp., but his family is listed as mulatto and I'm not sure that is the right one. I am looking for anyone who has interest in or knowledge of Michael Blake, who was born in 1840 in Ireland and lived in North Towanda Village in 1880. I have found him in the Census for 1880 and it shows him living with his 12 year old son and 8 year old daughter. He was already a widower and I cannot find anything on his wife and when she died. I have been able to find some things on Michael Jr. and have traced him to DuBoise, Pa, but I have not been able to find much on the daughter Mary. I know she moved to Ithaca, New York and worked at the Farmers Hotel in 1888-1891. She married a McGreevy in Ithaca and cannot find out much more than that. Is their any one else tracing this line out there???

Hi Joyce,
I just wanted to express my appreciation
to you for the excellent pages regarding this cemetery and those who are
resting there - eternally. I am a Horton on my mother's side of the
family. I have a few clarifying items regarding some of the Hortons among
my ancestors. Would you be interested in receiving them? Of particular
interest to me (since I was a WWII merchant mariner) is the item related
to Wallace Horton born in 1921 and died in 1943. I have a lengthy article
which deals with the torpedoing of that vessel off Newfoundland. Only one
man survived the sinking of that vessel (Atlantic Sun). I can send
you a copy of that article if you're interested. And if you are aware of
any of Wallace Horton's family members still living, I'd appreciate your
advising me. Wallace Horton and I are not related. Our only connection
is the merchant marine.

I am desperately seeking information about my maternal grandfather A.R. FISKE (or FISK) in Bradford County, late 1800s. I have proof of his being in the Laddsburg area in the 1890s and he apparently married Myrtle WILLIAMS, daughter of Samuel and Bethia (or Bathier) WILLIAMS, between the Laddsburg directory information of 1900 and her burial in Laddsburg cemetery in 1902. He may have later moved to Onondaga County, NY, dropped the 'e' from FISKE, re-married (Grace?), and was listed in the 1917 directory as a church minister in Elbridge, NY. Any information is greatly appreciated.

My dear dad died in Austin Tx. March
9 1996. He was Albert Eugene Mandeville, Jr. (brother of Mary Mandeville
Shaffnaker, also deceased). Have been wondering if there are any
Mandevilles left in Canton?
My father was a forester with US Forest Service from his graduating Penn State at Mont Alto, don't know what year. He was 86 years at his death. I (his first child-one of five) was born in 1937. He and Mother lived in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and finally Texas, which became their permanent home in 1946.
Am curious to find if there is any surviving person there with this family name.

Mary Marriott was born in 1848, in Elkland, PA. She married Daniel McBride about 1870 and lived in Elmira and Towanda. I want to know the names of Mary Marriott's parents.
I know from an old genealogy that Mary Marriott was descended from Charity Mosher and Jonathon Marriott, who were Quakers, married in Duchess County, New York in 1797. We have always assumed that one of Charity and Jonathon's sons was Mary Marriott's father; they were Thomas, Henry, William and John Marriott.
