From: rmb65@attbi.com (Robert M. Brown)
To: PABRADFO-L@rootsweb.com

Hi Listers,
I'm Bob Brown in Salt Lake City. Just wondering if anyone out there is working on the Maxfield line. I am up against a wall and need some help. First of all I need to know if anyone can tell what name Polly might take the place of. The father of this is family is John Maxfield who came into the County in 1812 and died about 1813. He left a widow Hannah and several Children. One, a girl Polly, who I suspect is really Clarissa Maxfield who married William Dodge Brown my third great grandfather. Any help along these lines would be most gratefully welcomed.

It's good to be on the list and I enjoy the comments. I learn some new about everytime I check in. My best regards to all and may all your dicoveries be great.
Bob Brown ( rmb65@attbi.com)

FULLER, Curtis P.
I just received a copy of the Civil War Pension file for Curtis P. FULLER, son of Alanson FULLER and and unknown first wife who may be my ancestor rather than his 2nd wife Jane BARDWELL. New information as a result of this pension: Curtis was born 25 Sept 1829 in Springfield Twp., Bradford County and lived there until 04 July 1870 when he moved to Lambs Creek, Richmond Twp., Tioga County, PA. He married Arintha M. MOORE in Springfield, Bradford County on 24 Dec. 1850. He died 06 Sept 1891 in Lambs Creek and his wife Arintha died 25 Jan 1908, same place. What I need now is more information about his parents, especially his Mother.. I have no idea who she was; I need something from an obit, a death register or anything else that would tell me what I need to know to help me determine if Lydia FULLER who md. my Thomas Haven AMES was a sister or a step sister of Curtis P. so that I can chase the correct woman (I have gotten nowhere on Jane BARDWELL). From census I have seen children of Curtis and Arintha listed as: George, Alvah and Ida. Have found nothing further on them, either.

Hi,
Researching the family of Amos HURLBUT/HURLBURT/HULBERT who was born in Pa and married Betsey COOLBAUGH abt. 1825 in Wysox. Wondering if he is the Amos who was the son of the Amos HURLBUT who was married to Jane GORDON, daughter of Samuel GORDON, and who came to Wyalusing Creek with his brother Benjamin from Elizabeth City, NJ in 1802-03, and was the first murder victim in June of 1803 in Bradford County (then Luzerne Co.).

We know of four children's names so far and possibly five who were born to Amos and Betsey (even though the Family History Site says there were no children): John R., Joseph B., Sarah who married Andrew DEPEW, George A., and possibly an Eliza A. who married a Gilbert WHEELER in Rush, PA in 1846. According to the census of 1840 in Wysox, there may be as many as four more children. Amos was a millwright who moved his family to Wisconsin between the census of 1850 and the census of 1860. If anyone can help shed some light on this family, please contact me at lhulbert@excel.net

Sincerely,
linda hulbert

Dear Joyce,
I am a novice genealogy researcher. I was given your name as a reference and possible source.

I am looking for an early map of Sheshequin/Rome Township. I purchased an 1869 early settlers map of Litchfield (on E-Bay) .. only to discover that my family had not migrated that far north at that time. My family surname is Eiklor,Eckler,Agler.. with ties to the Vought family. I would really love to purchase a map like the one of Litchfield.. with the settlers (landowners) names on it. I just don't know where to look for it.

Can you help me? Please respond back at my e-mail address. Thank you soooooo much. Linda Reff E-mail address: lreff@juno.com

From: es06512
To: TriCountie

I’m looking for descendants of my 4th great grand father, one of your "first settlers" Rev. JOHN SMITH

Children of Rev. JOHN SMITH and ALICE ANDREWS Smith, all born in Dighton, Massachusetts.5#

i. JOHN SMITH born October 31, 1774 Monday 1 o’clock A.M.
ii. JOSEPH Coit SMITH born February 3, 1777 Thursday 6 o’clock P.M.
iii. ALICE SMITH born May 30, 1779 Sabbath 5 A.M.
iv. ELKANAH SMITH born June 10, 1781 Monday 11 P.M., died Aug. 28, 1838(?)
Elkanahs Gravesite transcription can be found at:
	   http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/cemb/oakhil20.htm
v. HENRY SMITH born December 10, 1783 Thursday 10 P.M. (I already know about
       his folks)
vi. FRANCIS SMITH born January 17, 1786 Monday 4 P.M.
vii. LEMUEL SMITH born May 25, 1788 Sabbath 4 P.M.
viii. MARTHA SMITH born June 27, 1791 Sabbath A.M.
ix. BENJAMIN SMITH born April 20, 1794 12 M.
x. THOMAS Andrews SMITH born August 25, 1797
I know where they came from (back to 1500’s England so far) but I don’t know much about where they went. I see in a 1871 Bill of Equity that the court succeeded in tracing descendants of five of the ten above children and that the widow of grandson Francis and his two daughters ELIZA ROCKWELL and LUCY SMITH were still living in Troy Pa. in 1871 (descendants of Elkanah, son of Rev. JOHN SMITH). Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Joyce,
My name is Laura Standard and I live in Colorado Springs. I came upon your site last night as I have been obessed with finding the parentage of my gg grandfather Seth Parmenter. His death certificate from Oklahoma City OK was no help-he died October 22 1918.

My mother knew that he lived in Rock Island County Illinois before moving to Oklahoma. Well.... I found the 1850 Illinois census for Rock Island County and he is listed as a 4 year old with the family of George D Young, Katherine Young, George A Young and James P. R. Young. When I was on the familysearch.org web site (Lds) I found the 1880 census for Monroe, Shelby County Iowa with Seth and his family-my gg grandmother and g grandmother. His parents birthplace on this census indicates his mother was born in PA and his father was born in MA.

I know that many Parmenters in your Tri county area came from MA. I would be interested to know anything about the migration patterns in and out of your area......

By the way, I have enjoyed your site and find it very well done and very helpful-keep up the great work-compared to some of the other PA sites (Fayette County for the Moore surname and Mercer County for the Graham / Galloway surname)- yours has a wealth of information!!!!!

My email address is ls811@citystar.com
Thank you for your time,
Laura Standard

Joyce...I'm so happy to have found this site. Geneaology has become my addictive pastime, and I am researching my Pa. kin. Direct ancestors would be Emma Mitchell who married Alexander Kocher. Emma was one of 3 children of George Washington Mitchell (born 1790) and Mary Ames (born 1813 in Conn.) Children were born in East Smithfield...Arthur Mitchell in 1835...Elizabeth Mitchell in 1838, and Emma in 1840. Emma had about 8 kids, one of whom was my grandgather George Washington Kougher (Kocher) who ended up farming and coal mining in Clearfield County. I would love to learn more about his life in Smithfield (he was born there, and I assume was raised there) Also, I am curious about the Mitchell and Ames famlies. Could you put me in touch with anyone researching these families. I'd be happy to share what I have learned so far.

Joyce:
I will begin by thanking you in advance for reading the following and coordinating such a great website. I have not seen anything close in comparison. Please advise on how I can join the Society and/or make a contribution.

SEARCHING FOR ANCESTORS OF PERRY DONLEY.

Perry Donley first appears on the 1870 Census (Roll 1312) in the town of Standing Stone. He was 25 years old and working as a farm laborer in the household of Byron Stevens. On the 1880 Census (Roll 1104), he resides in Standing Stone with his wife Harriet (Coates) and his first two children, Roy (age 7) and Minnie (age 3). The Census states that Perry's father was born in Delaware.

For the 1890 Special Census for Civil War Union Veterans and their Widows, Perry Donley was identified as a Private in Company A of the 141st PA Volunteers. I had previously obtained copies of his military records from the National Archives. He enlisted on 7 Aug 1862 in Lt. Joseph H. Horton's Company at Wyalusing. His Discharge Certificate, dated 30 Jan 1863, states he was born in Bradford County and was 19 years of age. This places his birth year at 1843-1844. It should be noted that throughout the documents, his name is spelled in a variety of ways including, Donnally, Donnelly, Donely and Donley. According to the documents, his physician in Standing Stone appears to be a W. L. Clagett, M.D.

Perry Donely married Harriet Coates (Coats) on 31 Dec 1870. The service was performed by Jared Hart, Justice of the Peace in Standing Stone. They produced six children; Laura, Roy, Minnie, Lee, Lora and Harriet. Details on each are as follows:

Laura DOB June 1871 DOD 5 Dec 1878

      Roy DOB 19 Jun 1873 DOD 1925

      Minnie A. DOB 23 Aug 1876 DOD 1942
Married to Charles S. Stevens 28 Oct 1897

      Lee DOB 11 Feb 1880 DOD ?
                   Married to Adah Verbryck

      Lora M. DOB 20 Dec 1883 DOD 20 Dec 1968
                   Married to E. Frank Madden

      Harriett A. DOB 9 Jun 1892 DOD 22 Nov 1966
                   Married to Phillips E. LeGault

Perry died on 1 Feb 1893 and is buried in Standing Stone Cemetery along with his wife, Harriet, and two children. His tombstone reflects 49-3-0 which would put his birth at 2 Nov 1843. His wife, Harriet, died in 1932. Their son Roy was killed in a mining accident in 1925 and their daughter Laura died as a child on 5 Dec 1878 (source - Bradford Reporter). Daughter, Minnie Amelia Donley married Charles Simon Stevens. Both are buried in the Stevens Cemetery.

I know the danger of drawing conclusions, but I am really stumped on identifying Perry's ancestors. Given that he was born in Bradford County in 1843, I keep coming back to the Wm. P. Donelly on the 1850 Census for Wyalusing (Roll 757). This Wm. P. would be the right age and I have not located him on any subsequent census information for the County. He is listed as the son of Henry and Lorinda Donelly along with their 8 other children (Margarett, Phebe, Margett, Sarah, John, Harriett, Wm. P., Abigail and Henry C.). Lorinda and one child, Margarett both died in October 1855 (4th and the 18th) and are buried in Wyalusing Cemetery. Another child, Harriet is also buried there and died on 28 May 1853. Perhaps nothing more that a coincidence, but Perry's first and third daughters were named Laura and Lora, perhaps after his mother, Lorrinda???

By the 1860 Census, Henry Donally and his two youngest children (Abigail and Henry) were living with a Mallory Donally (possibly a nephew and neighbor). All other surviving children would be over 17 years of age and most likely were either married and/or working on their own.

Do you know of any way of putting a stake in this matter one way or another. Either Perry is Wm. P. Donley or he is not. I truly don't know how to proceed and fear this will be another dead-end line in my search efforts. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Would there be an obituary for Perry Donley in the Bradford Star or Bradford Reporter given that I have a date of death? Are there any local enlistment records for Company A of the 141st PA Volunteers? Did local newspapers print birth announcements at the time Perry's children were born? Given the marriage information provided, are there any sources which would produce additional information?

I would truly appreciate any assistance or advise on how best to proceed. I live in Chicago and most likely cannot make a visit to Bradford County. I am open to your suggestions - volunteers, paid researchers, etc.. Thank you so much for taking the time to review this information.

Subj: [Tri-Counties] Simon Kane died 1850 or 1910

From: ellen.bugs@cox.net (Ellen Buglewicz)

Hello list. I shared my good news last week, now I have to start dealing with bad.

According to Margaret Kane's obituary, her husband Simon died soon after their arrival to the USA. I have possible ships records for June 1849, arriving on the Thetis in NY. In the 1850 Census, Margaret and son Michael are listed in the census, living in Wysox Twp., Bradford County, with Flannigans, Linches, Franleys. If Simon was buried in this area, where might I find him? I'm thinking it would be a Catholic cemetery.

I've been following a Simon Kane who lived in and around Elmira from 1862 to 1910. I have no proof that he was related to my Kanes, except for his name, age, and the fact that he lived less than a block from Michael Kane, and is buried in very close proximity to Michael as well (and we were always lead to believe that this was our Simon). In the 1910 census, Simon lists 0/2 children living. My Simon had two children as well. Were they actually dead or did this Simon just consider them "dead" because of something that happened? One more thing, Simon and wife Mary Cahill Kane are buried at SS P&P in Elmira, in a full plot (8-10 graves) all of which are empty except for the two of them. I thought that this was odd considering that his two children were "dead."

What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
Ellen Kane Buglewicz

I am seeking contact with anyone researching the PARMETER family. My 2nd great grandfather, Freeman E. PARMETER was born 1834 in Henrietta, Monroe, NY according to his Civil War enlistment. His death certificate shows his parents to be Elijah & Martha (BRITTON) PARMETER. I do find an Elijah in Monroe Co. in 1830, and an Elijah purchasing property in Jackson Co. MI in 1841. This family has some connection to Elmira I believe from a family story. Also they were members of the Universalist Church in MI. Having found the surname PARMETER / PARMENTER in both Chemung and Bradford Co. I am hoping someone can make a connection to this.

Greetings Researchers,
Trying to find maiden names for these Bradford County family groups. Please read through them to see if they match anything you might have...

Robert ALLEN bc. 1824 NY, d. 25 Nov 1886 aged 57
Lydia M. ________ bc. 1833 PA
(ch: Charles bc. 1856, John bc. 1868, Hattie bc. 1873)

Van Rensselaer GATES b. 10 Sep 1830, d. 11 Mar 1897 (s/o Seth)
Emeline M. _______ b. 20 May 1836 PA (she m(2) Roswell SHARP)
(ch: Lizzie bc. 1862, Jennie bc. 1865, John A. b. 1866, Lee & Edna)

Lydia and Emeline are sisters along with a Mrs. S. F. GEORGE
of Caro, Tuscola Co., MI (in 1902) All of the above are buried in
Harkness Cem., Springfield, Bradford Co., PA

I suspect Emeline M. (____) GATES SHARP to be the daughter of John and Sally M. NORMAN. Emeline and Van's daughter married Harrison "Harry" McCABE, son of Charles and Angie (BRACE) McCABE of Troy. The Harry McCabes moved to Philadelphia.

Other families which are probably connected are the MILLERs, FAULKNERs, BROWNs and CLEMENTs.

Please respond if you have any marriage info, clues or comments.

Can anyone suggest where I might look next in my quest for my great grandparent's application for a wedding license?

Facts: Oscar Alexander Ennis, born 11/1865 in Standing Stone, PA and Mary Loretta Moroney born app Nov 1872 in Ireland are listed in the 1900 census as living in Elmira at 111 Miller Street with their children and other family members. According to the census data, they were married in late 1891, approximately.

I requested a records search for the application for a marriage license

  1. from the Bradford County clerk in Towanda (thinking they might have gone home to Oscar's family to get married)
  2. from the NY Department of Health in Albany
  3. from the Elmira County Clerk's office
  4. from the Office of the City Clerk, Elmira

All of them searched; none of them found any record. Any ideas on where I might go next? It's my one real hope of finding the names of Mary Moroney's parents and her place of birth.

Thanks for your help

Hello Joyce,
I’m hoping you might be able to help, or maybe point me in the direction of someone who can please? I’m tracing my husband’s family history and the only information we have on his great grandmother is that she was apparently born in Tuscorora, USA in about 1865. Her name was Hannah or Ann BORDER. I believe she may have returned to the North-East of UK (Durham/Sunderland area) by 1881, but have been unable to find out when or why, though it’s possible her father had passed away as her mother later re-married in the UK.

If you have any ideas of how we might be able to find out further information, I would appreciate a reply.

Many thanks,

Joyce,
I am the current State President of the Empire State Society, SAR as well as the current Chapter President of Newtown Battle Chapter, SAR (They thought I wasn't busy enough) and a group of people are researching the gravesites of the Baldwin Family buried in Knoll Cemetery, Wellsburg, NY. We have some information stating that Gen. Sullivan's troops killed at the Battle of Newtown were also buried near this cemetery in unmarked graves. We have a newspaper clipping showing the "supposed" grave of Lt. Nathaniel McCauley who was wounded at the battle and died the next day from shock due to leg amputation.

Among other things, we are trying to locate the gravesite of Waterman Baldwin's spouse - Celinda Burnham. In you cemetery research, have you come across this name? We believe her parent's, Asahel Burnham and Johannah Wadsworth, are buried in Wells Cemetery - Chemung, NY.

Should we have definite proof that Sullivan's soldiers were buried near the Knoll Cemetery, we plan on having a ceremony to honor them with some type of marker or possibly individual markers. We are also trying to gather the names of those soldiers that died during the battle. I have two (2) reports - one says 3 died and another says 6 died the day of the battle with one the next day, possibly this was Lt. McCauley.

Any help you may be able to give in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Respectfully,

Hi Joyce, <
My name is Laura Standard and I live in Colorado Springs, CO. I visited your web site last night for the first time and was so enthralled I stayed up until 3am viewing all the Parmenter references. You see I have been obsessed with finding the parentage of my gg grandfather Seth Parmenter. I must say your site is one of the best I have visited-I've also been researching the Moore surname in Fayette CO PA and the Graham/Galloway surnames in Mercer CO PA. Many kudos to you for your "labor of love".

Not much was known about him as he died October 22, 1918 in Oklahoma City-my grandmother was a year old. His wife Harriet A Elliott Parmenter died 8 May 1922. Their daughter Laura (my g grandmother) died in 1948 when my mother was 9. (Bless her heart she knew that Seth and Harriet had lived in Rock Island Co IL.)

Anyway, his death certificate was no help. The 1850 Rock Island County census showed him as 4 yr old with a family of George Young and his wife Katherine. I had better luck with the 1880 census on www.familysearch.org (LDS)- I found Seth and his family in Monroe, Shelby CO Iowa. The birthplace of his parents are shown to be: his mother in PA and his father in MA. I found many Parmenter on your site with their roots in MA.

Sorry for the long winded explanation but I was hoping to learn anything you might know about migrations out PA - certainly the push westward had to do with economic reasons...... Thanks for your time and wonderful web site.

Sincerely,
Laura Standard

Joyce,
Good morning. I have a quick question for you. I am trying to track down info. on Jonas Smith, one of the early members of the Wysox Presb. Church. He is mentioned in an item posted on your Bradford County site, entitled "The Captivity of Jane Strope".

A geneologist by the name of Winifred Lovering Holman did some research on this line for Mildred Rahm Smith (cited) in 1949 where I believe she determined Jonas' parentage.

Do you know the identity of any Smiths currently living who may have this research (Mildred died in 1959). I noted that Katherine Scott Hills obtained the "Captivity of Jane Strope" from Mildred and shares a some common ancestors (i.e. Sebastian Strope) as did Mildred's husband, Edward Luther Smith. Do you if Ms. Hills is still living and her contact information?

I am related to Jonas' line of Smiths through his son, Rev. Nathan Smith. I'm afraid I have hit a brick wall and would really appreciate any help you could provide.

Thanks a million,
Mark Smith

1) Ebenezer PRESTON (b. 1848) From HUNT CEMETERY records, I believe
Ebenezer married Phoebe M. Luther (b. abt 1853 - d. Feb 1892). "Eben" and
Phoebe were the parents of perhaps 5 children: from the 1880 Census, they're
listed as a son, E.J., (b. abt 1874), a son B. M. (b. abt 1876), and a
daughter, Elsie (b. abt 1879). 2 daughters, Jennie May and Annie Adell, born
in 1870 & 1872 respectively, died in 1877 and are buried next to their
mother, Phoebe.
2) Lucy PRESTON (b. abt 1850)
3) Lewis PRESTON
4) Emma PRESTON

I'm also seeking members of the FANNING family. Lorenzo & Abigail's
daughter Mary (b. 7 July 1830 - died before 1869) married Elisha FANNING (b.
24 Oct 1820 - d. 23 Feb 1899) and they had 5 children:

1) Abigail R (1847 - 1917), who married Erastus WOODWARD & had children
Archie (1870 - 1907), Effie, (1866 - ), and Mary (1879 - )
2) William S. (1850 - )
3) John R. (b. 1854 - 1924), who married Ida (ALLOWAY ?) and had children
Charles E. FANNING (b. 1879 - 1967 - married to Nellie B.); John R. Jr. (1874
- ), Carrie; Addi (who married a GORDON), and Roy Harold who may have
entered dental school in Chicago.
4) George S. (1861 - )
5) Eva M. (1865 - 1877)

Lorenzo & Abigail's youngest daughter, Lucy, married a BENNETT, and they had at least one daughter, Nettie.

By way of information, I'm descended from Lorenzo & Abigail's 7th child, Martin Van Buren AYERS who moved to Wisconsin. He had 4 children, Elvira Eretta, being the oldest, and only girl. She was my maternal grandmother. She traveled to Berrytown and taught school there in 1892, and then returned to Neillsville, Wisconsin. Another brother, Lewis L. AYERS, Lorenzo & Abigail's 5th child, also settled in Wisconsin. His family thread is being researched by one of his descendants. And yet another "cousin", Norm in Canada, is researching Lorenzo's 2nd family from which he is descended. There are many of us very interested in anything that can be added.

Thanks so much,
Marianne Walker

Hello Joyce,
I am looking for my great grand mother Elizabeth Holloran (or Holleran as I have seen it both ways) She came to America in what I believe to be 1866 from Ireland. At the time I think she was only 6 or 7. I have searched high and low to find her and I cannot find her or any of that side of my family. The reason I am asking you is is that you came up when I typed in "origins of Holloran" and I found out that her brother William Holloran was born in Pa. in about 1876. I also know that Elizabeth or "Nappy" married my great grandfather John Gilroy. I am somewhat able to trace other parts of the family from about 1900 from there. I cannot seem to find out much of anything about her . If there is any way that you might help I would be very appreciative.

Thank you Jeff
