Subject: DANIEL STEVENS OR STEPHENS

Hi Joyce,

Could you please put the paragraph below in the Bradford County Queries.

I am looking for the final resting place (cemetery) of Daniel STEVENS or STEPHENS. His name was spelled both Stevens and Stephens during his life time. He was the son of Jonathon Stephens/Stevens of Chester, New York. He was born approximately 1802 and one source says he died in 1869 however the 1870 census says he was still alive and living in Le Raysville, Pennsylvania so I presume he died shortly after the 1870 census. His first wife was Sarah Jane Horton who died in 1843. I believe he married his second wife Amelia Morey in 1852. They lived first in Rome of Bradford County and then moved on to Le Raysvillle in Bradford County. Although I can see by looking at the census of 1870 that they lived in Le Raysville I can’t find the cemetery that he was buried in. If anyone can shed any light on this please contact me at JFSTILLWATER@yahoo.com. My name is Jack Flipp and I live in Stillwater, Minnesota

I am seeking information with reference to my late cousin, Margaret L. Hansell WIESNER, whom I understand was the daughter of Cornelia JONES and (First Unknown) HANSELL of Sullivan County, NY or Bradford County, PA. From the limited data I have from her communications, she may have been born in Elk County in September 1913 and was married to a Frank WIESNER, born in Hungary in September 1915. She mentioned having a few sister living in Bradford County as late as the 1980s. Her husband,Frank WIESNER died in April 1984 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Margaret L. Hansell WIESNER passed away 25 November 2000 in Boca Raton, Florida. Haven't been able to obtain obituary information as to burial locations or family history leads to their past. Not sure where they were married, but Margaret had spend time in Bridgeport, CT while attending high school. She spent time with her and her husbands real estate business in Florida, St. Croix, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Would appreciate any assistance with information with the WIESNER, JONES, HANSELL and related families.

I know this is a long shot, hope you can help? WALTER, Blaine Gowin I'm researching WWII Intelligence Marines killed in action for a memorial. I believe the person below is one of the Marines I'm looking for. Found this information (and it's the only bit I've been able to find) on the person below on your site: 317 Walter Blaine Gowin Wyalusing 24-Oct-1940 From WWII draft number assignments. Since I'm unfamiliar with geneology and the area, it's difficult for me to find anymore information on your site. Was hoping to either contact someone related to this person, or find photos and more biographical information.

Thanks, Doug Brower

Had to make corrections on 1880 & 1910 Censuses. Coolbaugh misspelled on 1880 census, Henry, Mary Ellen state born in OH.
Parents married there in 1844, Henry was bn. in Stockton, Rooks, KS; Mary Ellen in NE. More misinformation had Mary Ellen
bn. in PA, NE & OH. Robert Spalding Coolbaugh & Mary Ellen Lewis married in IDAHO, PA & IL. There is an Elisha Lewis in
NE mar. to Maria L. Lewis, also was incorrect. He is on the 1880 census in ILL, died in 1890 & Aurelia Lewis (Topping) was
on the 1910 Census and died in 1911.

Looking for information on the family of Stephen HAMMOND and Adaline FARBER who located to South Creek, Bradford, PA in the mid 1800's. I have reason to believe that Stephen is the son of Noah HAMMOND (est birth 1744-1750) and Anna BREES Hammond (abt. 1750) of Sussex Co., New Jersey. Stephen HAMMOND died apparently before 1850. Adaline is found in the 1850 census of South Creek, Two of her children are also found in 1850 South Creek, Alfred HAMMOND and A. Jackson HAMMOND. Not sure where daughter Emmeline HAMMOND Beardslee is, though a note I found indicated Wells Township but she does not appear in the 1850 census in Wells. Two other unnamed sons are also to said to be of this union.

Many members of Noah HAMMOND and Anna BREES 's family moved to Chemung Co., NY and Bradford Co., PA that it makes simple sense that Stephen HAMMOND did as well.

Any information on Stephen and his wife is greatly appreciated. I am looking to increase the probabilities that he is the son of Noah. Thank you.

RE; WILLIAM STEPHENSON 1870 CENSUS. BRADFORD COUNTY

Hello, my name is Debra STEPHENSON-Edwards. Thank you for sharing the information about the people in Sheshequin Township. I have been interested in finding out some information about my dads side of the family CHARLES EARLING STEPHENSON. I believe the WILLIAM and THERESA STEPHENSON are my relatives from the 1870 census. My dad was born in PA in the same county, and his father CHARLES LESLIE STEPHENSON was my dad's (CHARLES EARLING STEPHENSON ) father. CHARLES LESLIE STEPHENSON later changed his last name to Stevenson. We have been trying for a long time to find out if one of the grandmothers were Cherokee Indian. Is there anyway of finding out that information. My grandfather (CHARLES LESLIE STEPHENSON) left my grandmother right after my dad was born and left them in New York City. I also was born in New York. He(CLS) later had married again without divorcing my grandmother, and two daughters with this other wife. My father Charles Earling Stephenson found his father at a used car lot in on of the little towns in Pa. in that same area. I was with him when he told his dad, that he was his son. The man almost had a heart attack. It was an awesome thing to see them get back together and get to know one another after over 40 years of not seeing each other. It is interesting to me to see that the Stephenson family is still in the same place for so many years. To look at my grandfather (CHARLES LESLIE STEPHENSON) you would almost swear he was 50% Indian. He was a huge man with dark hair and dark brown eyes. The WILLIAM STEPHENSON you mention in the census was born in England therefore it had to be one of the mothers where the Indian ancestry came from. I have no way of going to PA at this time. Could someone let me know where I can find this information out? Would it be in one of the birth records or death records from that area? I dont know where to look for any of this info. Your help would be much appreciated, and I have enjoyed this website immensely. My father has passed away and I wish I would have found it while he was still alive. My mother and I and my brothers now know some of the family past and are proud that 2 of the Stephenson's were in the civil war. If anyone has any pictures of the STEPHENSON FAMILY I would love to see any of them or even headstones with the STEPEHSON family name on them would be good too.

Thanks again for your time. I am now living in Oregon City, Oregon

Hello Joyce
My name is Marc O'Grady and I recently came across your website while doing research on the internet. I have been tracing my family roots and it has brought me to the Towanda area of Bradford County, PA. I believe that my Great, Great Grandfather William O'Grady was born in the Towanda area but later moved to the Buffalo, NY area by age 3. I have been told that there may have been a relative of William named Ellen O'Sullivan who lived in Towanda. I am not sure if this might be a sister of William or not. I have called the city of Towanda but they said that they have no birth records on file before 1893. William would have been born in 1856 or 1857. I am looking for any link my family had to the area, including the names of Williams' parents. Is there anything you could do to help or point me in the right direction? I would greatly appreciate any insight you might have. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you....

Thank you, Marc

From: farquar@earthlink

I am working on the Seventh Generation and forward for the family tree of JOHANNES KAULBACH (now known as COOLBAUGH), specifically of my maternal grandmother's original burial place. CELIA ALLEN was born in either Standing Stone or Wysox, Bradford Co., Pa. on 4/12/1874; married in 1891 or 1892 in Towanda to MICHAEL MEEHAN and died in 1903 or 1904, probably in Towanda. I believe she was buried in the Old Catholic Cemetary in Wysox and her remains were disinterred and reinterred in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetary in North Towanda when the Old Catholic Cemetary site was sold to Osrum/Sylvania and the plant was built on the site. Does anyone have a listing of remains removed from that site? My family would like to install a marker if we can determine where CELIA ALLEN Meehan is permanently interred. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Loman DICKERSON[1822-1868] was a Civil War veteran and is buried in Quimby Cemetery, Tuscarora Twp., Bradford County. He was a member of Co. C of the 112th Pennsylvania Volunteers. I am seeking information on him and his family.

Loman, a stonemason, is listed in the 1860 Census as living in Towanda. Living with him is a Herman DICKERSON, presumably a brother, who was about four years younger. I believe that Herman is my gggrandfather but I have no firm dates for him.

Herman and Carolyn JOYCE were the parents of Mary Eunice Dickerson, born in Bradford Co. on 8 Dec 1853. Carolyn may also have been known as Carolyn JOYCE KELLOG prior to her union with Herman. Kellog was her stepfather's name.

Dates:

Loman DICKERSON [b.3 Sep 1822, d. 9 May 1868] - possibly born in NY
Herman DICKERSON [b. 1826 ?, d. ???] - born in NY
Carolyn JOYCE aka Carolyn JOYCE KELLOG [dates unknown] - born in NY
Mary Eunice DICKERSON [b. 8 dec 1853 in Bradford Co., d. 11 Apr 1930 in Punxsutawney, PA.

Mary Eunice Dickerson married John Warren WINSLOW in 1871 and they had 11 children, most of them born in Clearfield and Elk Counties, PA. I have extensive information on that branch of the family for anyone who needs it.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I am seeking information on George W. and Jennie B. WELLER BAXTER, of East Troy NY, and their descendants. They had four children, Theodore Weller BAXTER born 1898, Rexford L. BAXTER (m. Miriam R., died 1980), Leon L. BAXTER (m. Elizabeth O’Dea, both died 1980), and Margaret BAXTER.

I am the granddaughter of Theodore, who moved to the Syracuse, NY, area after his marriage and had a falling-out with his family; thus we have little information on them. I would love to know more about his siblings and their descendants.

From: rachelt@midsouth.rr.com

Hello everyone,
I am researching the Thomas T. McAsey family who moved around in the tri-county area. He was born 1n 1864.

His wife was Lizzie (Elizabeth) born in 1873. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Sweeney and her mother was Annie Sweeney.

I have found 3 children - Annie born 1895, Gertrude born 1896 and Thomas born Mar 28 1899 (in one place it said 1898). They show in the 1900 census as living in Ridgebury Township, Bradford.

The only other information I can find after this is in 1907 when Lizzie has become a widow and is working as a domestic with address 113 Harris, Athens Borough.

It is possible that their son Thomas is my grandfather, if I have the correct family. He does show up in the WWI draft record as living in Chemung County. I can't find any other information.

If anyone has further information on this family could you please share it with me.

Thank you very much. Good luck with all your family searches.

To: TriCountie@aol.com

My ancestor, Daniel BREWSTER of Wysox and Wyalusing Townships, appears in Bradford Co., PA veterans and pension enumerations as having participated in the War of 1812 as a "private in Steele's Co., 2nd Infantry".

Daniel appears in the 1810 census of "Wyasox/Orwell" Twp.(then part of Luzerne Co.) and in the 1820 census of Wysox Twp. (Bradford Co.). I am, therefore, assuming that at the time of his enlistment in the War of 1812 he was a resident of Wysox Twp., Bradford Co., PA.

The only War of 1812 "Steele's Company" I have found as yet that may have been from PA is that of Captain George G. Steele. According to NARA, at the time of his discharge, George G. Steele was a captain of the 16th Infantry.

http://www.archives.gov/research_room/genealogy/military/1812_units_subunits.html

I then looked up 16th Infantry and found the following which appears to connect it to the 2nd Infantry during the War of 1812 (at the U.S. Army Center For Military History website):

Lineage of the 2d Battalion 2d Infantry

  1. Constituted 12 April 1808 in the Regular Army as a company of the 6th Infantry.
  2. Organized between May and July 1808 in Pennsylvania, New York, or New Jersey
  3. Consolidated May-October 1815 with a company of the 16th Infantry (constituted 11 January 1812), a company each of the 22d and 23d Infantry (both constituted 26 June 1812), and a company of the 32d Infantry (constituted 29 January 1813) to form a company of the 2d Infantry
  4. Designated 22 May 1816 as Company B, 2d Infantry
http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/lineage/branches/inf/0002in002bn.htm

Has anyone been able to connect their Bradford Co., PA War of 1812 ancestor to this company or any other company from the area? Where might enlistment have been?

Dear Joyce,
I am presently researching a possible link to your Sullivan-Rutland Genealogy Project. I have a great-grandfather by the name of Hiram Russell / Russel who died and is buried in Sterling Run, Cameron, Pennsylvania in 1896. I have researched him and his wife Nancy Jordan ( daughter of James H. Jordan ) whom migrated from Lycoming county to Bloss twp, Tioga, Pa --sometime between 1840 and 1850. ( as I have them on the 1850 census for Bloss).

James H. Jordan later migrated to Barclay, Bradford, Pa--and I believe died there--anyway I have a marriage date of January 29, 1852 for Hiram Russell and Nancy Jordan---in Blossburg, Pa by Rev. Adams (on some pension papers)

My problem is connecting this Hiram Russel(l) to Rueben Russell of Orwell, Rome, Pennsylvania--I have covered your site throughly and have a marriage record for a Hiram Russel and Lucy Claflin--circa 1848--upon research I find Lucy ( Claflin ) Russel back living with her parents in 1850 census and Ruebens son Hiram living with his father... I have eliminated Hiram Washington Russell as my ancestor--

I have only 2 Hirams that could fit as my Hiram and one is Ruebens boy----I have my Hiram and Nancy on the 1860 census of Cherry Flats, Bloss, Tioga, Pa with 2 of thier children Oliver and William........in the 1870 census they are just gone from all census records. I have come into possession of an Obit for a William Russell ( the right age to be Hiram's son ) he died in Benzinger twp. which seems to place the Russels in Elk County, during the 1870 census. ( which I have been told were burned) By 1880 they are in Cameron county.

My cousin ( and research partner) recently came into possession of some pension papers for our Hiram and on them he is said to be from Bradford county. But we still have no conclusive proof that he is Rueben Russel and Sarah Eiklor's son.

I am very much interested in sharing anything that I have with you, if we can just prove that our Hiram is the son of Rueben.

At present I'm in possession of Nancy's will, a land deed, 2 obits on children of Hiram, pictures of his decendants and more. Can you help me? I'm writing to see if any of our research can be tied to your Sullivan-Rutland Genealogy Project. Please advise.

I also want to take a moment to tell you how impressive your site is--it has helped me researching my Beckwith ties and my Russell ties as well, as so much more. I truly appreciate your time and efforts on behalf of those who have gone before into history.

Highest Regards,
Dara L. Feilert fw2552@comcast.net

I have recently received information indicating that Lovina VANDERPOOL was probably my ggg-grandmother. (Her forename was also variously spelled Lavina, Elvina, Vina, Lovinia, etc.) The connection was pointed out to me by Don VANDERPOOL, who "was struck by the similarity" between parts of his family data and mine.

Don's detective sense was alerted by a Jun 9 1822 marriage record at TriCounties website between "Mrs Lavina JOHNSON of Asylum" and "Aaron CLARK." The two surnames match a list (based on a family Bible record) that he found at my web site, stating that my gg-grandfather was born at TOWANDA and had 4 siblings with surnames that included JOHNSON and CLARK: Anthony JOHNSON, b 18 Nov 1814 William BRAY, b 21 Aug 1819, TOWANDA PA Mary Ann CLARK, b 23 Jan 1822 Elizabeth CLARK, b 23 Feb 1823 John ROBINSON, b 6 Mar 1828 http://meiszen.net/family/tree/manly/loretta/wm_brey_anc.htm

Hot on the trail, Don located an 1830 census record for Asylum Twp listing Elvina CLARK with 5 children, all of whose ages and sex match the Bible entries: M 1810-1815; M 1815-1820; F 1820-1825; F 1820-1825; M 1825-1830.

The scenario is this: Lovina bore son Anthony 1814, then William (my gg-grandfather) in 1819; but when she married Aaron CLARK in 1822 she gave her name as "Mrs JOHNSON" which probably indicates that she was previously married but not to William BRAY's father. Her first CLARK daughter (Mary Ann) was born several months before her marriage to Aaron CLARK, and Elizabeth CLARK was born eight months later. In 1828 Lovina had another son surnamed ROBINSON, but she is listed as Lovinia CLARK in the 1850 Durell census.

Our family tradition (probably quoted from William BRAY himself, who later spelled his surname BREY) states that William's father was a red-haired Irishman and his mother was one-quarter Indian. Don notes that Lovina was one-quarter Oneida Indian. "Pioneer and Patriot Families" quoted at http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/heverly/hevtoc.htm

As a next step, I would like to know more about Lovina VANDERPOOL and about her mother, Elizabeth JOHNSON or JANSSEN. Was Elizabeth ever part of Sir William JOHNSON's "colony" at JOHNSTOWN, NY? One WorldConnect/Ancestry site describes Elizabeth as a full-blooded Onieda; Don says she was half Onieda.

Any information will be appreciated.

Can someone direct me to the record of the above marriage on 5 Jun. 1899? I have spent many hours in the Tri-County sites looking for it without success, and I know I did find it there somewhere.

Henry Sheridan Cornell was the son of Frederick Plummer and Mary Ann (Keyes) Cornell and was born 13 Aug. 1870. He and his wife were bur. in Sylvania Cemetery, Columbia Twp., Bradford Co.

I suspect she was Miss Carrie A. Morse who m. (1) Fred H. Shaw, but I'm mainly interested in the Cornell marriage. Probably she is the following: SRGP 32601 Caroline Morse.

Thanks for any help you can provide me from your most outstanding sites!! Your effort shows!!!

Joyce,
My name is James Fox, I am retired Navy and just started getting into family geneology as a past time.

I am a decendent of James Boughton who lived in South Creek around 1870. He was married to a woman named Susan and had a child named Sidney according to the 1870 Census.

I am not sure what county/township he moved into your area from but was hoping that you may have some information on when he moved there, where he came in from and what his wife's maiden name may have been.

I found four of their six children including my Great Grandfather Ransom Tanner Boughton. I know of Sidney, Ransom, Hettie and Frank but do not know the other two. If you could maybe shed light on this also it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time on this matter....
v/r James Fox

Joyce,
I found your website when I was conducting a search of the Ingerick name. I am an 'Ingerick' but do not know much about my family. My father, Richard Ingerick was born in Canton, PA but his family moved to Florida when he was young and was raised there. My grandfather, Mac Ingerick was also born and raised in Canton, PA. His wife was Martha Williams from the same area. Other than that I do not know much more. If you could put me in touch with someone who might help me fill in my family history, I would appreciate it greatly.

Hi:
I have a fair amount of data on the offspring of Joseph Biddle, who was one of the early Armenia settlers in 1834. I am trying to learn where he and his son Israel are buried. Most of the siblings are in Park Cemetery.

We are also trying to nail down where Joseph’s line goes. I believe he is the son of Israel Biddle of Derry, North of Danville. His wife is Elizabeth Headley or Henry.

He is my ggg grandfather. Here is an outline for your collection. I do have more data.

I'm searching for any information on Jacob HOOS, b. abt 1788 in NY; and his wife Sara, b. abt 1802 in NY. They came to Athens, Bradford County, PA, from Greene, NY, sometime between 1830 and 1840. They were in Athens in 1850, but were not found in the 1860 census. In particular, I'm trying to link them with Lydia Marie HOOS, b. 5 May 1825 in NY. Lydia married George FARNSWORTH (b. 9 Apr 1818 in NY) of Barton, NY, abt 1846/1847. This marriage would presumably have taken place in either Athens or Barton. I am postulating that Lydia could be Jacob and Sara's daughter. Lydia is my gggrandmother.

Thank you and congratulations on having the finest web site of its kind that I have seen.

Warren Wolcott, born 1810 in Connecticut, married Hannah Billings in 1846. He later married a woman named Louise who appeared with him in the 1880 census (maybe even before that). Louise was born in 1850,Pa. They lived in Pike township.

I would like to find out if Warren had any children in either marriage and what Louise's maiden name was.

I appreciate any help. Jean

Hello, I am searching for my ancestors and was wondering if you have run across a Noah Albert Owen(s) born in Beaver Meadows, PA to James and Mary Owen(s) or his first wife Margaret Daviess, they were married in the Welsh Congregational Church in the mid 1800's. She died after they had a son and then he falls off my radar. My great-grandfather then married a Mary James born in Wales (Garndiffeth or Cardiff) to a James and Mary James. They had 13 children, one of them my grandfather Samuel Arthur Owen. They moved to Raton, NM before he was born. My great grandpa Noah served in a volunteer regiment, from PA, in the civil war.

I'm not asking you to search, but if anyone sounds familiar to you help would be appreciated.

My Owen family seems to be the only one not linked to someone on the web.

Thank you,

I came across a partial tombstone in the John Rogers family cemetery in Litchfield Twp. and I can not find this family in any census. I hope someone might have some clues as to who they are or where they settled. I can not provide a time period since only the top half of the stone (limestone) was found and is in poor shape. .

Stone reads:

JOSEPHINE O.
daughter of
Alphonzo & Lydia

I am a nephew of the late William Jerome Kelly (1897-1967) who is a son of William and Jane Collins Kelly and a grandson of Daniel and Mary Ann Leahy Kelly, Kelly Hill, Forks Township, Sullivan County, PA.

I am trying to identify the maiden name of William Jerome Kelly's wife, Helen, who was born in Bradford County, PA in 1892. I think that Helen was born in the East Smithfield area and that her surname began with a "K," but I am uncertain about the area and the surname.

William Jerome Kelly and Helen Kelly lived in Rochester, NY before moving to Ojai, Ventura, and Oxnard, CA after World War II. Both are buried at St. Clare's Cemetery in Oxnard, CA. Helen had a daughter, Gerry, from her first marriage.

I would appreciate any information that you have. Thank you for your consideration.

My ggggrandfather William Smith was born 1770 in England or New York State. He married Abigail McCracken on April 5, 1792 in Sherman's Valley, Pa. The 1810 Census for Burlington Twp., Lycoming Cnty., show William & Abigail Smith with 6 male children in the home, ranging in age from under 10 to the 16-26 range.. There are 2 females under 10 and one 16-26. The one in the 16-26 age group had to be Lucy Hudson Smith, who was born in 1793 in New York. Lucy Hudson Smith married Thomas Baldwin. The 1850 U.S. Census shows William & Abigail Smith living with Lucy & Thomas Baldwin in Columbia Twp., Bradford Cnty., Pa. William & Abigail Smith were born in New York according to this census. My gggrandfather Howard S. Smith was born May 10, 1810 in Columbia, Bradford Cnty., Pa. He married Azubah Nelson who was born in 1798. The 1880 U.S. Census shows Howard Smiths father born in New York. Does anyone know the names of the other children of William & Abigail Smith? I believe that they had a child whose name was Abigail. Abigail married Lorenzo Ayers. Any information regarding this family will be greatly appreciated.

am looking for information on Oscar Dewey RIDER. He also used the name Donald Ryder which is the name on his gravestone. His father was Samuel Rider. I would like to know if anyone knows who his mother was. It is said that he was a half brother to Samuel's other children, Benjamin, Nora, and Mary Rider. Their mother was Catharine Harris Rider. I believe she died between 1900 and 1910. I believe he was born in 1904 and died in 1975 or 76. If anyone has a death date for Catharine, that would also be appricated.

He was in Overton in the 1920 census with his father, and I know that he lived in Overton as an adult.
