I am very new at all of this and know only a bit of information. My husband's
mother was Marjorie Elizabeth Dean. She was one of four children. Her father was
Doyle Dean and her mother was Hazel Cole.. Her grandmother was Ester Cole.
Doyle Dean and Hazel Cole Dean had four children. At the time of the 1920
census there were four children Marjorie 3 yrs, Doyle Dean Jr. 5 yrs., Ella
2 yrs and Charles just months old. On the census the two women and the children
were the only ones in the household. From what very little my mother in law
said before her death we know that she had a very hard life. That her father
left the family . We don't know why or where he went. All four children were
given up . The youngest child Charles was adopted by the Southard family as
an infant. We can not recall her ever talking about Doyle Jr. or Ella. As the
children were put in some sort of orphanage {or poorhouse, maybe?} Marjorie
talked about being placed at a dairy farm and having to work there to pay for
room and board. The agency had placed her there when she was old enough to
work. she talked alot about growing up in Horseheads. We gather this was
after she left the home.
I have exhausted all the usual searches and was wondering if you could direct me in another directon. I would love to find out anything I could on the children and parents. Is there any way I can search or have searched the court records? Was there a Dept of Children and Family Services in 1920 and beyond? Marjorie said that she was born on May 7, 1916 but the census has a different month. I need to secure her birth certificate with hope it will tell where and when her father was born. She was born in Elmira.
Oh yes one other thing. we know that Marjorie Dean gave birth to 2 children out of wedlock. My husband's oldest sister Roberta in 1937 and Nola in 1939. She gave Nola up to a family she knew. We believe that the above children were born in Manhatten. And that Nola was a direct adoption possibly to a Florence DeRose(spelling could be wrong}. All of the information was found on a piece of paper in an old address book. She also wrote down the name Norman Abrams we thought that maybe he was the attorney who handeled the adoption. If you know of any way I can get access to an old telephone directory from 1939 to 1941. One other name she had on the paper was Richmond we assume it was with the surname of Dean. Also my husband and his sister remember returning to Elmira and looking for family many years later. Mid to late 40's) they never found who they were looking for. Marjorie eventually married my husband's father Thearon P. Lowe somewhere in New York.
An advanced THANK YOU for any information or direction you can show me. I am so sorry for rambling on but I would love to find some family history for my husband and his sisters.
Thanks

Does anyone have any information about a link between these three families? If so I'd appreciate any hints I could get. I'm looking more specifically about Dr. Henry Keeney Webster m. Sarah Elizabeth Haviland and their son Towner Keeney Webster b. July 31, 1849 Ithaca, NY.
joamazeme@yahoo.com with any information you'd be willing to share.
Joyce ---- I have spent quite a bit of time browsing through your site and find that you have done a great job. Perhaps you can help me a bit. I have been looking for the Lawton family who we know lived in Ithaca but find that some lived in Elmira or at least some of the children did. I haven't been able to find any graves however in your listings. If you come across any of these I would appreciate hearing from you;
Nora Simcoe (husbands first name unknown), Mary A. Carey (husbands name unknown), James D. Bennett, Angeline D. Goodrich, husbands name Louis. All living in Elmira in 1931 at time of will probate for aunts in Caroline. ( Permelia Lawton and Marth Jane Longcoy.) Also Andrew Bennett, brother of above.
Mary Ann and Andrew Bennett living in Chemung in 1909 and probably Elmira some time in there.
Arial and Angeline Lawton may be buried in Elmira -- a guess on my part.
Also you state that the "records are in the office " for Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads and in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Elmira. Where would I write for these records??
I have many records from my grandfather about the family but cant pin a lot of information down so am trying this approach. Thanks for your help and advise me if there is any charge and I will send you a check. Also if you need more information will send that.
Thanks again Ray Lawton
Hello, My name is Jessica Lynn-Lato. I was visiting your website, while trying to do some research on a distant relative of mine by the name of Ester Burr. I was attempting to check cemeteries in the Elmira area. I'm not sure if you can be of any assistance, but I'll give you a brief and short history, as I do not know much about her. We have a small rocking chair in our family... passed from my great aunt to my father to me. It is my understanding that it, at one time, belonged to Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and was given to Ester Burr. She was the Langdon family seamstress and family friend. It was handed down to my great Aunt Marion Cosgrove who resided in Otisville NY until her death a few years ago. I have the rocking chair now and a single photograph of Ester Burr, but no more information than that. I'm attempting, I suppose, to at least verify that Ester was an employee of the Langdons at one time.
I thought that you might be able to point me in the direction of some available online resources. I currently reside in Charlotte NC and cannot visit your lovely area in person. I am formerly of Williamsport PA and have visited your area several times and love the lakes, streams and history.
Thanks so much for your time.

Hello, my name is Brenda Amelung and my mother is doing an ancestry trace. She told me of the TriCounty website but it's so overwhelming and I didn't find anything that related to finding your ancestors.
My mother's name is Lois Irene Roy (married name, Satterlee) Who she's looking for is her grandfather, Fred Wisner Roy born Jan. 20, 1785; her great, great, great grandfather John Roy, Jr. who came over from Scotland in August, 1782. He died in 1839; she doesn't have his birth date. John's wife Jane Roy died January, 1857. No birth date on her either. She is also look for Wisner J. Roy who is an ancestor. My mother's father Lewis Roy was born in Bradford County, PA June 20, 1899. He died in 1966 in Elmira, New York. Hello list,
I'm looking for information on these families
from the 1850 Census, Chemung County, Big Flatts Twp., p. 142:
Daniel Buckber
76 M Farmer
1500 NY
Martha Beckwith
73 F
?
Joseph Buckber
26 M Farmer
NY
Elizabeth Buckber
26 F
NY
Alexander Dickinson
13
NY
This Alexander Dickinson is my gggrandfather, I think. The age works with what I know. I don't know any of the others. I remember Beckwiths in Elmira; we lived down the street from a Beckwith family on Broadway--I played with the kids! And I've seen Beckwiths in plenty of other places during my research, but not associated with my family. But the Buckbers are totally new to me. This is not even a name I've heard. I searched Joyce's site and found no Buckbers...
Any information is appreciated.

Dear Joyce,
Your site is wonderful! I'm certain I must sound like a broken
record. There is only one problem. With all this information
I am certain you are too busy to answer requests, but I could not find any
researcher listed. I think I am shirttail relation--maybe.
My Chemung County ancestors are Henry and Catherine Owen Woodhouse. They are the mother-and father-in-law of "Uncle Jerry" McCumber. Actually, my 4 great grandfather Samuel Owen is Catherine's brother. Not being able to identify his parents I began working on collateral lines. Hence, my introduction to your site.
I am hoping the obituary of Henry or Catherine will give me some information. I have found a shortened version of Henry's in the October 28, 1841 edition of the paper. Is there anyone who could provide me with the entire article?
Catherine Owen Woodhouse died Sept. 6, 1861. Those papers are not indexed as yet so I could not find a date for her obituary. Is there someone who would search for that for me and provide me with a copy?
I am willing to pay for time, postage and materials.
Again, congratulation on a fantastic site.

Hi Joyce,
I just received a brief message from Reva Wagner pointing me
toward your website because it contained the surname FURMAN in it. I've
been searching my FORMAN ancestors in and around Tompkins County (Fingerlakes
Region) for more than 30 years without luck.
I've got three siblings born 1815, 1818 and 1822 and I'm totally baffled by a lack of data available in or around Ithaca. I've often wondered if records might be found in some of the other surrounding counties especially when one considers the boundary changes which took place in the early 1800's.
How can I find out who is searching the FURMAN surname on your site as recommended by Reva? Any information you can share on this matter would be most greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Jerry Forman

Hi Joyce I came upon your wonderfully historic site while
researching the name Singerhoff. My sister-in-law, Jeanne
Singerhoff Chesterton, remembers that her parents (or grandparent)s
would go to Elmira (from Maryland) to visit relatives,
when she was a little girl (1940's). Jeanne's father was John
Allen Singerhoff and her grandfather was John Bennett
Singerhoff (married Margaret Dorsey). Jeanne's father did
not grow up in Elmira, however I am trying to learn more about
the history of the Singerhoff family in Elmira. The
City Directory from the 1890's shows many Singerhoff's involved in the
wine and liquor business. I was just wondering if there
is more information on this family, especially the parentage of John
Bennett Singerhoff. Hope to hear from you!

I have a sister, Roxana Sarah, to my gr-grandfather, who married a Meddaugh, and had one child. Her husb. died and she married a McConnell and had one more child. These were daughters, each married and had desc.'s. However, I have not been able to find out her husband's first names, anything about the marriages, or when she or her husb's died. She was raised in Chemung Co., but lived in Rochester, NY during her married years. (this was during the 1800's)
If any one who is researching these families
have any information on these two lines, I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks, Suzanne Guinn
Hi Joyce, My name is Rhonda Box, and I spoke to a very nice lady at the Elmira Library. She gave me your name & suggested contacting you regarding my husbands ancestors. I am looking for any information about Josephine Wood, born 3-18-1867 in North Chemung. She married Urban Sherman born 3-16-1859 in Rose NY. They married August 10th 1886 at the First Methodist Church by Rev. Mills in Elmira, NY. They had one daughter. Charlotte born 11-28-1891 in Watkins, NY. We have information regarding the Sherman side of the family, but are lacking in any information on the Wood side of the family. There was mention of american indian heritage and we are wondering if it is possible to trace that kind of information. I am new to using the internet. So it took some time to get this far. Your address was different than what was given to me originally. I hope it is ok with you to ask help.
Let me know , Thank you, Rhonda

I am tracing a Quick line, and happened to find your website. The
only information on the Quick I am searching is her name was Mary/Polly Quick,
married 1811 to Levi Winfield. Levi and Mary Winfield resided in Sussex County,
New Jersey. Their daughter, Catherine, b. 1823; m. Isaac Hulse. Per information
from Tioga County, New York: From: "A Memorial History of Tioga County, New
York Published ca 1898 by W A Fergusson & Co, Elmira, New York Chapter
titled: Waverly and Town of Barton page 659: William H Hulse, son of Isaac
D Hulse and Catherine W (Winfield) Hulse, was born in Elmira, New York, March
30, 1855. **Isaac D was a native of New Jersey, born 1820. He was as successful
teacher for a number of years. From New Jersey he went to Chemung County,
and from there came to this county [Tioga] in 1855 engaging in farming until
he entered a meat market in Waverly, kept by Buley & Ellis. ** Isaac
Hulse was born in Orange County, New York.
I found a daughter of Isaac & Catherine Hulse, Harriet S, who married Peter Blanding in 1870, residing in Chemung, Chemung County in the 1880 census. I also found a Lewis Quick residing there also. Wondering if you had any information on this line, also wondered about your reference to this: Huldah's ancestry goes back to many New Amsterdam and New Jersey Dutch families. Among her famous ancestors is Tom Quick
Anne Townsend
I just found my great-great-great-grandfather,
George WARREN b abt 1811 in the 1850 Census of Chemung, Chemung
Co,. NY. He was married to Celestia (MOFFIT/MOFFET) b 1814.
Their children were James b 1833, Arminda b 1836 (who may have
been married to Lyman CHAMBERLAIN found in the 1880 Chemung Census), Sylvanus
b 1839 (my
gggrandfather) who married Susannah SIMCOE b 1839 ENG, George b 1840, Sally
b 1843, Emeline b 1845, Ursula b
1847.
I know that Sylvanus and Susannah WARREN moved to Michigan and are found
in the 1870 Newaygo Co., MI census.
I know nothing of the rest. Susannah SIMCOE was born in ENG in 1839
and came to America when she was 12,
according to her obit. Her parents were Thomas and Mary SIMCOE who
I believe are the same ones buried in
Riverside Cemetery in Chemung.
Anyone who has any more information on this Lyman CHAMBERLAIN b abt 1823
or SIMCOE's or any of the other
WARREN children, please contact me. Because there are so many WARRENs
in NY it is very difficult to trace them.

For the past week or so I've been perusing your wonderful "Tri-Counties"
web site. I've only been Internet active for a year or so but this is, by
far, the most professionally done site that I have come across. It appears
you have poured tons of effort and devotion into it, congratulations, it is
a jewel.
I've been doing research on the Parsons family since I am the 4th Great grandson of Eli Parsons Jr., my mother having been born a Parsons. I have acquired tons of new information and dates from your web site but have come up with a puzzle as well. I cannot determine the relationship of the Rev. James Parsons, the circuit riding Baptist minister who was active in the Underground Railroad and also the 2nd Postmaster of Canton. He does not appear in my Parsons genealogy and I was unable to ascertain his parentage through your web site.
Can you help or point me in the right direction?

Joyce--Because of your site history I was able to solve my own problem. The Justice of the Peace was John W. Wisner on the Henry Woodhouse affidavit. He just signed the middle initial and W from Wisner together, so it made it hard to read. He was elected JofP in 1834, your history shows. I would still like to find out more about the life of Henry Woodhouse. His wife, Catherine, was sister to my Rev. War ancestor, Joseph Owen of Vermont. We are trying to locate her (Catherine's) parents in Brookfield, Mass.

I am interested in obtaining copies of probate records relating to James Sloan, d. 1831, and his wife Rachel, d.1828. They are buried in Weare Cemetery, Southport, NY. I believe this is the James Sloan who represented New Jersey in Congress 1803 to 1809. His niece Ann Sloan married my gggg-grandfather Anthony Bendler. I have written the Tioga County Surrogate about probate records. As I understand it, Chemung County was not formed from Tioga County until 1836. I may have the maiden name of Sloan's wife Rachel in notes from my research in New Jersey. Sloan was a Jeffersonian Democrat, and made quite a few waves in NJ politics around the time of his service in Congress. I'd be happy to exchange information: my NJ data for anything you may have on him or his family in NY.

Dear Joyce,
I don't know who to contact for this. I am researching my great great
grandmother and I have come to a stop in Elmira, New York. My great great

was born in Elmira, New York on May 27, 1845. I don't know who her parents

She married another New Yorker, David Park Adams when she was 19 and I believe
he was from Oswego, New York, born on May 4, 1835.

Hello, wonderful site.
I've been trying to locate the exact origins of my families surname for a
while now and have only been really successful in the obvious - it's Irish.
I hit your site searching one day and it gave me a county.
My surname is Moonan and according to the Chemung County Surname Listings it originates from Co Meath. What I need to know is; how sure you are of this.
Yours faithfully,

Hello Joyce,
Thank you for an impressive web page for researchers.
I was thrilled to find several marriages in your newspaper abstracts for
1852 that I'm sure could not be found any other way. I'm wondering how I
can obtain the obituary for Dr. George V.R Merrill, who had no descendants.
He lived in Chemung Co. from 1848 until his death 13 Nov. 1924. He's the
son of Rensselaer R. Merrill and Henrietta L. Sweet, born in Cortland Co.,
N.Y. Feb 1841. I need the name of his wife and the date of their marriage
which I would guess was about 1868 to 1870 in Elmira. I am hoping that his
obituary would give me this
information. Do you have a Genealogy Society
that I could contact to find someone to research out this obituary? Since
he had no descendants, and no one seems to be researching this Merrill Family,
I highly doubt that anyone would add it to the site.
Thanks for all your dedicated hard work on the behalf of many people.
Sincerely, Diane Dayley - Springville, Utah. My email address is dayley@madmac.com

Greetings Joyce,
My Mother and her sister (born in 1919 and
1917) told me there is a statue of one of our ancestors in the Elmira/Corning
area. (My aunt once said, "he was probably a horse theif",
but I wonder it would be a statue of a woman.). Their surname was Callahan,
daughters of Andrew Charles Callahan, M.D. who was born in Corning to Patrick
Callahan (born 1856). Patrick Callahan was a pioneer glass cutter in
Corning, NY. Andrew Callahan played football in high school and was
recruited by and attended Ohio State University where he played football.
I do not know anything further about the family.
I'd love to come to Corning to see where my
mother's family lived and to take photos of this statue to send to my family
in Texas and Florida. If you could direct me in any way I'd appreciate it.

Dear Joyce,
My name is Nancy M. Snell. I had relatives who lived at 527
W.Clinton St. Their names were Leverett Eggleston (1881-1963) and his
wife Margaretta(1888-1978). They had twodaughters I believe named Betty
and Priscilla. I remember visiting them at their home in Elmira.
Could you possibly give me any info on them. Thankyou.

Mary Marriott was born in 1848, in Elkland, PA. She married Daniel McBride about 1870 and lived in Elmira and Towanda. I want to know the names of Mary Marriott's parents.
I know from an old genealogy that Mary Marriott was descended from Charity Mosher and Jonathon Marriott, who were Quakers, married in Duchess County, New York in 1797. We have always assumed that one of Charity and Jonathon's sons was Mary Marriott's father; they were Thomas, Henry, William and John Marriott.
Thank you.

Hello,
I am trying to find out about Oliver Chappell who was reported
to be living in Horseheads in 1914. His wife was Marietta Mourey Chappell.
Do you have any information on this person? He would have been about
87 at that time so he may have been living with family and may have died
there.
Thank you for your time,
Dessa
Hi,
Looking for CHARLES ( CASHMIER ) PILARSKI who was born between
1893 and 1896 in Elmira, Ny . Parents were Jacob And Anna Mielczarek Pilarski.
Need phone numbers of Chemung County courthouse or Catholic Churches in that
time frame to help me in my search. The Pilarski family lived in Coudersport,
PA in 1896, but no record of Charles birth, either at
Potters County courthouse or at St Euliaia's Catholic Church where his sister
my Grandmother Mary Pilarski and her brother Stephen were baptized. I was
told that Charles was born in Elmira, NY.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much for your
time and trouble.
