Seeking information regarding Luella CAMPBELL, born about 1915, who was adopted as a baby by Harry CAMPBELL and Myrtle OSGOOD who lived in the Elmira area in the 1930's. Luella is believed to have married a man who worked for an Elmira newspaper. Family tradition tells that she died young, possibly in her early 30's. Dear Joyce:
What a delight to stumble across your website
this morning! I really enjoyed the many beautiful
old and new photoes.
I was searching for information on my husband's great grandfather Elias Albert Gilbert who was born in Chemung County 1 August 1852.
One of the many unanswered questions we have is regarding a boiler explosion at a mill at Van Etten prior to the 1860 Census (between 1855-1860). Elias' father Cephus Gilbert was killed in that explosion. Since you are more familiar with the area, perhaps you may have some information. Sorry I do not have an exact date.
Don's grandfather George Cephus Gilbert was born at Hicks. Elias purportedly taught school there several years. Is Hicks in Baldwin Township, Chemung County? Exactly where is it located?
Thank you so much.
Best wishes

I never cease to marvel at your site. Two of my Revolutionary ancestors are buried in Chemung County: Israel Parshall at Riverside Cemetery and Benjamin Burt at Wellsburg. We have visited both of these cemeteries and were pleased at how well kept they were. I do have one question. I'm looking for a lady, CHARITY WAKEMAN VANDEVENTER, who died in 1844. Her husband,ABRAHAM VANDEVENTER is listed in the 1840 Chemung County census. Is there an easy way to access her probable place of burial? I've searched about 1/3 of the cemeteries listed and can't find poor CHARITY. Again, my congratulations on a site well planned and managed.
Thanks in advance. Doris Hayden Gorgas in Cleveland, Ohio

I am trying to find any record of my great-grandparents Michael MCINTYRE and Mary MALEN McIntyre in the tri-county area. According to their obituaries, they were married on October 1, 1854 in Elmira, NY. Shortly afterward, they migrated to Preble County, Ohio. They were Catholic. SS. Peter and Paul Church, in Elmira, has no record of them. Was there another Catholic church in Elmira at that time? I will appreciate any information or suggestions.

Hello list. I shared my good news last week, now I have to start dealing with bad.
According to Margaret Kane's obituary, her husband Simon died soon after their arrival to the USA. I have possible ships records for June 1849, arriving on the Thetis in NY. In the 1850 Census, Margaret and son Michael are listed in the census, living in Wysox Twp., Bradford County, with Flannigans, Linches, Franleys. If Simon was buried in this area, where might I find him? I'm thinking it would be a Catholic cemetery.
I've been following a Simon Kane who lived in and around Elmira from 1862 to 1910. I have no proof that he was related to my Kanes, except for his name, age, and the fact that he lived less than a block from Michael Kane, and is buried in very close proximity to Michael as well (and we were always lead to believe that this was our Simon). In the 1910 census, Simon lists 0/2 children living. My Simon had two children as well. Were they actually dead or did this Simon just consider them "dead" because of something that happened? One more thing, Simon and wife Mary Cahill Kane are buried at SS P&P in Elmira, in a full plot (8-10 graves) all of which are empty except for the two of them. I thought that this was odd considering that his two children were "dead."
What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
Ellen Kane Buglewicz

I am kindly looking for connections to William W. PERRY, who is enumerated in 1830, 1840, and 1850 censuses as follows:
1830 Big Flats, Chemung County, NY William PERRY, age 40-50 female, age 40-50 five males and one female, all under 20, listed as well
1840 Tioga Township, Tioga County, PA William PERRY, age 50-60 female, age 40-50 two males and one female, all under 15, listed as well
1850 Tioga Township, Tioga County, PA Wm. W. PERRY, age 63, born New Jersey B.R. [Burton R.] PERRY, age 19, born PA Nathaniel PERRY, age 47, born New York
I find Burton R. PERRY (spelled Perrey), age 29, listed in the 1860 Middlebury Township, Tioga County, PA census, with wife Charlotte SHORT, age 21, and children Edwin, age 4, and Emily, age 1 month. The family migrated to Fenton, Genesee County, Michigan, from which Burton and Charlotte operated a hotel, and from where Burton served in the Civil War (10th Michigan Cavalry, Company L). Burton and Charlotte are enumerated in the 1870, 1880, and 1900 Genesee County, Michigan censuses. I am descended from their son, Edwin.
According to plot book of the Fairview Cemetery (Linden, Michigan), in which Burton and Charlotte are buried, his father's name was William PERRY, and mother's name was Polly CASTLE.
I would be delighted to hear from anyone researching PERRY or CASTLE surnames in the tri-county area, or from anyone who thinks they have a connection to this line.
Thank you kindly,

Hello Joyce:
Maybe you are not the person I should be talking to but I didn't see a town
historian for Wellsburg.
I'm trying to obtain some information on Jane SNOOK(S) b. Wellsburg, Chemung Co. 15 Sep 1835, she m. Reuben C. CHAPIN (b. at Hector, Tompkins Co) in 1859 at Wellsburg. I'm pretty sure her father's name was John SNOOKS (aged 82) as is counted with the CHAPIN family in the 1870 Broome co. census.
Most of the above information comes from Reuben's CW pension papers. He was drafted 1863 Chemung co, 27th Dist, Co D 91st Inf. gives his residence in 1865 as Wellsburg, Chemango co, Chemango Co., NY.
His first 4 children, Ida, Amos, Rebecca and John were b. in Wellsburg and the last two Amelia and Alice born at Binghamton.
Can you give me some guidence where to look for more information on these SNOOKS. Since John Snooks' wife isn't with the household in 1870, I am assuming she had already died, buried in Wellsburg area??

I am seeking contact with anyone researching the PARMETER family. My 2nd great grandfather, Freeman E. PARMETER was born 1834 in Henrietta, Monroe, NY according to his Civil War enlistment. His death certificate shows his parents to be Elijah & Martha (BRITTON) PARMETER. I do find an Elijah in Monroe Co. in 1830, and an Elijah purchasing property in Jackson Co. MI in 1841. This family has some connection to Elmira I believe from a family story. Also they were members of the Universalist Church in MI. Having found the surname PARMETER / PARMENTER in both Chemung and Bradford Co. I am hoping someone can make a connection to this.

I have been searching your extensive website on several occasions re the above subject. A lot of very interesting informaton has been reviewed. Alas a paucity of my main objective.
I have been trying to pin down information on Emory EAKINS, Emory A. EAKINS, & John S. EAKINS when they were in Elmira.. The time is mid-1880’s.
Emory EAKINS was born in Elmira, NY in 1884. based on delayed birth certificate. Emory A. EAKINS died in Elmira not long before or after Emory EAKINS was born. Based on family oral information. Helen EAKINS (widow of Emory A.) is listed in the city directories for 1886-88. Not listed in the 1889 directory. If there is a 1885 directory, I did not have access to it in the Library I used. John S. EAKINS Is listed also in the directories for 1886-88 that I was able to check.
Helens’ home was 204 Lormore. John S. was listed as physician, pres’t and medical director Chemung Valley Medical and Surgical Institute h. do Emory A. is listed as physician or doctor In the 1870 and 1880 Ohio census. I noticed that the Elmira Surgical Institute, referred to in the 1879 Four County History, Chapt. 46 new building (1873) , was located on Hudson St. The east end of Hudson is about two blocks from Lormore (1882 map)..
Questions: Is there local information indicating the birth of Emory EAKINS? Is there local information on date of Emory A.s’ death and burial location and possible date of removal for reburial in Ohio? Is any information available regarding John S. family and time of residence in Elmira? Can it be that the Institute associated with John S. be located in the same building as the older Elmira Surgical Institute?
I appreciate any comments or suggestions toward filling missing information Regarding the above questions. Needless to say, your website is both excellent and most extensive- my congratulations on a terrific job.
Thomas E. Eakin.

Dear Joyce,
First, let me say I love your web pages and enjoy looking at them.
I was interested in a reference at the beginning of the Nortrop and Wilson information. You mention that Eunice Nortrop was the daughter of Issac Nortrop and Elizabeth Lobdell. Do you have any more information on Elizabeth Lobdell.
My mother's family were Lobdells and from that area. I have a Phillip Lobdell who married Minne Grace Wrigley. Phillip's father was Philip Lobdell who was a butcher in Elmira and married to Elizabeth _____. Philip's father is listed as Issac and Elizabeth Weaver. Issac's parents were Chole and Ebenezer Lobdell. I only have Elizabeth's father, John Weaver. (This is thanks to you website.)
Does any of this ring a bell?
Thanks for your time.
Sincerely,

Am looking for information about a Vinta Edwards. Marriage in 1899 to Lewis Edwards. Known place of residences as of 1926 Horseheads, NY and by 1930 lived in Elmira Heights. She and her son Lewis age 28, worked in a mill of some sorts may have been a cotton mill but not sure. She died on Feb. 6 1966 and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads.
She is the daughter from my grandfathers's first family. I don't know who her mother was but her father was David L. Swartz. The spelling of Swartz is also spelled Schwartz so I don't know which to tell you to look under.
These are the particulars as I know them
Mouvinta/AKA Tinta/AKA/Vinta born in 1878 place un known but think in Pennsylvania Brother name of Gerald. Had back injury due to a accident while working on RR had to be after 1886. First marriage of Vinta listed to a Eli Gardner of Ulysses on Oct. 23, 1892 that would make Vinta age 14. This marriage was preformed in West Union , NY in Steuben Co. Both Vinta and Eli tho were from Pa. Vinta listed as from Hector and Eli from Ulysses. Marriage may have lasted 10 years as she is next listed as being married at age 21 to Lewis Gardner and living in Horseheads, NY. I am not sure tho when he died or for sure where he was buried. They had a number of children. Lewis, Mary, and 3-4 others. Parents both born in PA but do not know where. David died April 26, or 27 in 1926 in Hector at the poor house. He was born between 1848-1851 Buried in Ulysses with second wife and my grandmother Honora/AKA Nora C. Wheeler Nora died Nov. 1945 in Niagara Falls but buried in Ulysses. Nora and David L. had 7 children their number 5 daughter is my mother Dorcas Schwartz Beebe of Candor, NY Tioga Co. My father's family in 1899 moved from Madison Co, NY to Candor to start up a local News Paper. It was called the Candor Courier and was in the family till 1950 when it was sold.
A very nice gentlemen from the historical society of Elmira was very helpful and gave me lots of info. Some how or another we lost contact and for that I feel badly about. But if any one else is daring and would like to help me out with information about Vinta I sure would appreciate it.
Finances are getting tighter and so I wouldn't be able to offer any money at this particular time for any person's services. An a big thank you in advance and for any information that is sent to me. Please know that I certainly appreciate the individuals time and effort that they would be spending in researching Vinta and her family for me.
I would most like to have her Obit and marriage announcement if possible and any thing about the births of her chidlren. An if her wedding is in either Elmira or Horseheads, I would like to know that as well.
In 1930 Lewis Vinta's son is listed as being 28 that would make him born about 1901 or 1902 depending on when the census was taken. Compared to his birth date.
In 1930 Mary age 9 was listed also that would make her born about 1920 or 1921 again depending on when census was taken compared to her birth date.
Lewis Sr. it looks like my have died as early as 1926. But place of burial is not known for sure. I know that by 1930, Vinta is listed as head of household so either Lewis Sr. was dead or they divorced. But I think he died.
Would any one out there be willing to help find these people and give me some more info? I am hoping to back track David L. Swartz to see where he was born and who his parents were and who is first wife was.
Am also looking for any information about a Beers Edwards to see if he and Lewis may have a connection
Also looking for any information about Meddaugh's or Middaugh's for any of the surrounding area's. Will be glad to have any thing one finds including articles about Frank Meddaugh, the Phone company he started and any thing else that has the Meddaugh or Middaugh name attached to it.
Thank you

Hi. my name is Robin Bailey from Voorhees, New Jersey. I'm looking for family in the Elmira, NY area. I just found my grandfather, unfortunately in the Woodlawn National Cemetery. I'm looking for his obituary. Do you know any easy way to find this. I've attempted to search the newspapers, no luck. His name was Bernard E Gaines, he died on 3-5-67 and was buried on 3-8-67. Next time I'm in the area I will go to the cemetery and the local library. I'm trying to find my uncle, his son, David Gaines, I was hoping that in the obituary it gave a state that he resides. He entered the military at a very young age..he could be any where. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Can anyone suggest where I might look next in my quest for my great grandparent's application for a wedding license?
Facts: Oscar Alexander Ennis, born 11/1865 in Standing Stone, PA and Mary Loretta Moroney born app Nov 1872 in Ireland are listed in the 1900 census as living in Elmira at 111 Miller Street with their children and other family members. According to the census data, they were married in late 1891, approximately.
I requested a records search for the application for a marriage license
All of them searched; none of them found any record. Any ideas on where I might go next? It's my one real hope of finding the names of Mary Moroney's parents and her place of birth.
Thanks for your help
Hi;
I am currently researching a California Pioneer who was a well know figure in
our state's history named Laurentine Hamilton. We are having a real problem
finding out more about his family. All we know is, he was born in Catlin, New
York in 1929. This is probably not the place to inquire but, I am hopeful that
you can point me in the right direction. This searching is new to me and I am
finding it to be a real challenge.
Any references or suggestions you can give me would be appreciated.

I am trying to do some research on my father's side of the family. My grandfather was born in Elmira City NY in Jan 1910. His name is KEITH S PIXLEY. His father is FRANK E. PIXLEY. In the 1920 census he is 40, married, living in Elmira as a lodger and a fireman for a hotel owned by Mary Adams. He died between 1920 and 1930. I am trying to find out when he died. Also Frank claims to be born in PA around 1880, I am assuming that it is in the Tri-county area. I am also trying to find out the names of his parents. I am told that his father was named Frank (born in NY) as well, his mother (name unknown) was born in PA. I am hoping that with the lack of major travel back then that they lived in that tri-county area as well. Is there anyway that I could get a copy of Frank's certified death certificate?
If you have any information please contact me.

I had found through a LDS film info that stated that in the Mt. Hope Cemetery my ancestors, James M. BOGART (died Aug. 11, 1902) and Harriet E. MIDDAUGH, his wife, (died May 4, 1909) are buried.
I have looked for a mailing address or telephone number for Mt. Hope in Van Etten and cannot find a listing. Can anyone help?
I have also tried to find a death certificate through Chemung County and they say it does not exist for either one. Where else would it be?
Thank you.

I found an obituary for Mrs. Thomas (Mary) Reidy Mullin at the Tri-Counties website. She died May 10, 1937. Mary was a distant relation. She may be my link to Ireland if anyone knows more of her. I'm going to work on obtaining her death certificate next, but any additional information from list members would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am seeking information on my husbands ancestors who came to live, I believe in Waverly. They were Richard Pilgrim and his wife Isabella. I am not sure what year they arrived, but their son Joseph William was said to have died 31 October 1867 and was buried in Waverly. Richard was a farmer in England, but I have no idea why he came to America. He died 28 February 1877 and is also said to be buried in Waverly. I have been unable to find his or his sons graves. His wife returned to England in 1877, but their son Frederick stayed. He met and married a Charlotte Crispen in 1882. I have found both of their graves in Chemung Village Cemetery. If anyone has any information on any of these families, I would love to hear from them.

TILLINGHAST, WILSON
William TILLINGHAST the son of Charles and Jerusha (Hatfield) TILLINGHAST. William first married Amelia WILSON the daughter of George B. WILSON and Sarah WILSON
I am seeking is information on what happend to William and the children after Amelia's death August 6, 1880 buried at Millerton Cemetery, Jackson Twp, Tioga Co., Pa
The children were young.
Harry Clayton TILLINGHAST b. December 23, 1865
Buren Jay TILLINGHAST b. abt 1870
Etta TILLINGHAST b. May 05, 1878
In Amelia's Obit is states that Her husband and children are desolate. They have the unfeigned sympathy of the whole community. That is all it says about her family.
They had a 300 acre dairy farm in Lawrenceville Twp., Tioga Co. PA I can't find any of them on the 1880 Census, and I can't even find the parents of William on the 1880 Census either, I believe his parents had a farm in Tioga Co., PA.
It was brought to my attention that the farm of Charles Tillinghast was abandoned the same year that William died in 1916, and I am wondering if William took over his father's farm. This is the farm where a newborn infant was found in the well of the well, of the abandoned farm of Charles Tillinghast.
William did remarry to Fanny Seely KOLB November 06, 1883 at the First Congregational Church of Elmira, Chemung Co., New York
William TILLINGHAST was master of the Millerton grange for two years.

I have been looking for a Eunice Read/Reed/Redd b. abt 1829 that m. William ALLEN b. abt 1829.
I have a feeling that this is my Eunice REED. I know that they had children named James ALLEN b. 1871, Juder b. 1873 and according to James' Obit, they had a sister named "Mrs. Clemmey Babcock" I think this Clemma could be her. Do you have any more info on these people? I had a feeling that They had been married before, since in the 1880 census William and Eunice were 51, and their kids were James 8 and Juder 7. No other kids listed.
Does any of this sound familiar to ANYONE?

Dear Joyce,
I have accessed your site before but have been unable to speak because
of difficulties from my Computer.
My husbands great, great grandfather arrived in Chemung County around 1867
from Devon, England. He was a farmer in England but I am not sure what he
did in America. One of his sons died in October 1867 aged 19, and one of
his other sons, Frederick went on to marry a Charlotte Crispen in 1882 -
this I was able to establish from your search engine. Also I found them
both in a Newspaper cutting, also from the site. Their graves are in
Chemung Village Cemetery. His father Richard died in February 1877 and
is buried, I believe, in Waverly. After his death, his widow Isabella
returned to England to be near her other son Thomas - my husband's
greatgrandfather. I would love to know why they came to America, where
they lived and what sort of work Richard did. Perhaps there are family
members who have knowledge of this so I would appreciate any help or
information given.
Must close for now, with thanks for a wonderful site!

Is it possible to obtain a look up at the Elmira courthouse? Referencing a petition for naturalization, I have Joseph Antonio Gilberti ( later he changed surname to Gilbert) stating that he declared his intention for citizenship there on December 18, 1894. If you could verify this, I would be grateful for a confirmation of such a record. If a copy is available please instruct. He was born in 1870 in France (French Algeria). He arrived in New York about 1886.
Thank you so much. Ann Gilbert

Hi, does anyone have a connection to Nathan TREAT who was born 1823 in Rushville (that straddles Yates and Ontario counties north of Chemung). He married Phydelia Williams in 1847.
I have searched for more than 2 year with no results and thought maybe someone had records of relative to Nathan. I noticed quite a few Treat's in Chemung Co.
Thanks for the help! Jay Treat
FENNO - I am researching the Fenno family..orginally from Altay, New York. E.Ray (born 1830), and wife Elizabeth moved to Owatonna in 1855 but did move back to Dundee, Yates County, New York about 1886-87. I believe E.Ray Fenno died in Jerusalem, NY, date unknown but after 1900. Elizabeth died in New York prior to 1895. I read in an Owatonna newspaper that Alick Fenno, son of E.Ray, (son's real name Alexander C. Fenno), visited relatives in Elmira, NY in November 1878 for two months. Another son, Seth Clark is our great, great grandfather. Would appreicate any information on the Fenno Family or suggestions to find unknown dates.
Thanks.. Jane Fenno jfenno@cvol.net
Hi Joyce,
My name is Becky Liscum and I have been on an interesting journey while searching
for my ancestors. It started out as a simple genealogy project but it turned into more
of an historical research project--something I know you can appreciate. To make a long
story as short as I can.... While looking for information about Emerson Hamilton Liscum,
I discovered he was named a General posthumasly when he died in the Boxer Rebellion in
1900. That's only the beginning of my research. Emerson Liscum married into a prominent
Elmira family, the Diven family and I became quite fascinated with his wife and began
researching everything I could find about her life with him.
The Divens had a mansion called "Willowbrook" and May returned there to live out her later years. I am trying to track down any letters Emerson Liscum might have written to May Diven Liscum while he was in the army. She travelled with him quite a bit but I am quite sure when they were separated she received letters from him.
Here's the needle in the haystack....Willowbrook was in great disrepair in the 1960's (May died in 1933) and the remaining relatives could not fix it up so they held an estate sale....it was apparently a huge event. In fact, I have an article from the Elmira newspaper that details the auction. In that article, it mentions a box of old letters was among the items listed to go at the auction. So I KNOW there was a box of family letters -- maybe not even to her, but they were written to someone in the family. I'm on a treasure hunt to track down those letters.
I've nearly exhausted the resources of the Chemung County Historical Society (they are fabulous people there) and also much of the newspaper archives at the Elmira library.
I really admire your remarks about telling the women's stories....that's exactly what I'm trying to do and have been hoping to write a book about May Diven Liscum and Emerson Hamilton Liscum.
That was as short as I could keep this story...in closing, if you could think of any additional resources for me to check out or if you perhaps have heard of any of the Diven family today, maybe I could start there.
Again, your website is amazing.
Warmly,
Becky Liscum

Van DEREN - I am searching for information on and descendents of David F. VAN DEREN and Anna HILES his wife. David died in c1820 in Chemung Co. Had several children, only know of a few: George, who might have married a Susan BOYER, had Canal dealings in Chemung Co. Barnard m: Elizabeth WORMLEY, lived in Big Flats, had 3 sons: George, Barnard, & Grant. In the Will book for 1834, Elizabeth Boyer names as a "daughter-in-law" Susan VAN DEREN. Knowing the relationships of the day, I do not know what this relationship implies, but I hope Susan is the spouse of one of my Van Derens. Does anyone know where David and Anna are buried? One of David's daughters married Benjamin Predmore when the family still lived in Sussex Co. NJ, in 1811 and their son David Hiles PREDMORE is buried in Valois, now North Hector, according to the Predmore family history. Where is this place? Does anyone know?
