Subject: Fuller

Hello, Joyce.
I am researching my great-grandfather Theodore Fuller, born 1850 in New York and living in Chemung - Chemung (as per 1870 Census). He married Susan ? Fuller and next appears in Census records for PA - Tioga - Delmar Twp., which is my family's primary location.

3 Questions, please:

Susan Fuller's maiden name? (am assuming they were married in NY- Chemung-Chemung?)

Theodore Fuller's father's name? (Census records indicate that both his parents born in NY).

Where are Chemung County marriage records held?

Thank you for any help you are able to give. I have been searching for some time via Internet (I live in Philly area) but cannot find this information. Have a great day!

Hi Joyce,
Thanks for creating the "rootsweb" website and doing all of the work to organize the genealogies of Chemung County.

I'm hoping that you or one of our compatriots would help me with some issues. Is there anyone who could discuss the Miller families of Chemung County with me? My Miller family originated in Westchester County. My great great grandfather moved from Danbury Ct to Ann Arbor, MI in about 1859. One of his sons, Frank Marcus, my great grandfather, moved from Ann Arbor to Chemung County about 1884 when he was 18-20 years old. I know there was a John Miller (born in Chemung c. 1809) who went to MI and then returned to Chemung with his family (Lafayette - a son- and an unmarried older daughter.) I don't believe he is descended from the original Abraham Miller from PA and of German extraction. And ??

My questions:
1. Were there Millers who moved from Westchester, Dutchess, or Putnam Counties to Chemung between 1830 and 1880? If so, who?
2. Were there any newspapers that announced marriages in Horseheads that took place in 1888? and that are archived and can be accessed (hopefully online)?

I have already subscribed to PABRADFO-D. Can I take up these matters and questions at that email location? As far as Chemung County goes, I have very little to offer in the way genealogy unless the connections to Eastern New York can be made.

Please get back to me on this. Best regards, N. Frank Miller, Ph.D.

I am trying to track down information on my grandparents; "Frank" LAUGHLIN and Anna THOMAS LAUGHLIN. Franks full name may have been Francis James Laughlin or James Francis Laughlin. Both were born in or near Elmira in the 1890s. They had a son James Francis Laughlin (my father) who was born in Elmira, Dec 27, 1918. Frank had several siblings but I don't know their names. Anna had a brother, Earl Thomas who as far as I know lived in Chemung Co. all his life. Anna and Earl Thomas may have been all or part Iroquois.

Looking to prove relationship between Andrew C. MCCUMBER and Charles MCCUMBER. I have a birth date of about 1810 in Rhode Island for Andrew C. MCCUMBER. Andrew MCCUMBER was a well known tanner in Horseheads. I think he is the brother of Charles MCCUMBER who is born about 1814 in Rhode Island. Charles was married first to a Esther HIBBARD and had a child named Ellen MCCUMBER. Esther dies soon after giving birth to Ellen MCCUMBER on 1 October 1840 in Pompey, NY. I think Andrew MCCUMBER adopts Ellen MCCUMBER sometime between 1850-1860. Charles MCCUMBER spent approx. 1843-1856 in Phoenix, NY then with his second family he had with Phoebe Melissa Tanner Johnson and then they moved to Lyons, NY, where he spent the last 40 years of his life.

I am searching for any additional information concerning John DASKAM, who died in 1834 in Big Flats, Chemung Co., NY and his family. Here is the information I have on the family:

John was born in Connecticut in 1759 and served in the American Revolution. He was married to May WAKELEE and had several children. They moved to New York sometime after 1801. I am interested mostly in John's son Robert (b. 1801 CT d. 1882 WI) and his family ( his wife was Anna Maria WHEELER (b. ca. 1807) and they had 10 children). Robert's son John Washington DASKAM (b. 1830 NY) was married to Caroline ASHDOWN in Horseheads in 1855, but the copy of the marriage certificate does not list their parents. Robert moved to Wisconsin in 1859 (with the younger children) and John followed in 1862.

I was wondering:
1. if John (the elder) left a will, listing his children, or if there is a record of his burial
2. there is any record of Robert and Anna's children's births
3. anyway to link John Washington Daskam to his parents

I have found no record of the family in the 1850 census, but was wondering if they might be on a New York State Census listing the family.

Thank you very much Lara Grant Ripon, WI

We have an extensive family of PEASE people in SE Indiana N KY and SW Ohio who came from your area but we still can't make that final link. We need to make a solid link for Joel PEASE born abt 1770 NY , Hannah TOWER PEASE born 1-1-1776 RI, their daughter Cilenda PEASE Gillis born 1-26-1792 NY and their son Harvey PEASE born abt 1800/02 NY. All of them came to Indiana and Kentucky from your area with Coles, Towers, Lemons and Munfords around 1815. An apparent but unproven brother of our Joel PEASE definitely lived in your area.He was Abel PEASE with a wife Lucy MARTIN . They had 10 children beginning in Ballstown and Spencertown and then Chemung Co. then Ovid and Lyons NY. Abel was born Oct. 20 1762 NY and died 1839 Clark Co. Ind. his daughter Laura was born in Spencertown 7-16-1791 and died 7-19-1791 in Chemung. His son and probable nephew of our Joel was Joel born 2-26-1792 in Chemung and died 9-8-1793 in Chemung. His daughter Louisa was born in Chemung 7-15-1794. his son Abel Jr. was born Chemung 12-9-1797 and died 1825. another son John Calvin was born 6-27-1799 in Chemung and died in Ohio .

Our theory is our Joel fits as brother of Abel as they are sons of Joel PEASE Sr. and wife Elizabeth CAMPBELL, again in your area. Joel and Elizabeth CAMPBELL PEASE had the following children: (1) Bethia b 4-12-1760 d 4-29-1800. (2) Abel b 10-20-1762 NY d 2-2-1839 in Ind. and we think is the brother. (3) Asa b 1764 (4) Eleanor b 9-13-1765 d 1-13-1844 in Ovid. (5) Miriam (6) Joel ( and hopefully our Joel) b abt 1770 (7) Betsey b abt 1772 (8) George b 1774 (9) Nathaniel (named after Joel Sr's father) b 1776 (10) Louisa b 1778.

There is more circumstantial evidence collected by five of us over the past few years if needed. Anything to help finalize Joel, Hannah, (daughter of Gideon and abigail Perkins Tower) , their son Harvey PEASE or daughter Cilenda Pease would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks , William Pease wapease@

My name is Mary McNeil Haglund. I am writing from Albany, NY. My father, Frederic W. McNeil, Jr., was adopted in 1922 by a couple from Elmira, Frederic W. and Sarah Brooks McNeil. Apparently his birth father died in a plane crash in the south and his birth mother brought him from Georgia to Pennsylvania where Sarah picked him up. Sarah had been married before to a Mr. Brooks and had a son, name unknown, who was raised as my father s half-brother. The family moved to Hammondsport around the time of the depression and my father graduated from the Hammondsport high school. I am curious about the McNeil s and also about who his birth parents may have been. I have found several McNeil s on your site, but am not sure they are connected. Fred Sr s father was Frank and he had a brother, Frank, and a sister, Eleanor. My father served in WWII, graduated from Dennison College and from Colgate Rochester Divinity School.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. Your site is wonderful I wish other counties had such resources.

Yours, Mary Haglund,

BROWN - HORNING The Maple Grove Cemetery in Johnson Hollow, Catlin Township has a large upright marker with the name Frederick Brown, born Oct 31, 1849, died Jan 17, 1871 on the front. The marker has the name Horning at the bottom. The right side of the marker has the name Almina Horning April 27, 1851 - Jan 13, 1920. The back of the marker has the name Abraham Horning Aug 18, 1832 - Feb 15, 1886. I would like any information on why my great great Uncle Frederick Brown's name is on the Horning marker. He may have been Almina's first husband.
