Hello,

I am trying to find proof that Marika DINGS was the daughter of Johannes DINGS & Catherine COUSE.  Marika DINGS was born 1811, died 1859, and married Francis PALMATIER May 2, 1833 at Potter County, PA.  Marika is also spelled "Marica" or "Marcia."   Johannes DINGS died 1863 at Chemung Center, NY.  Please let me know if you have proof.  I really appreciate your efforts!

Many thanks!

Subject:  BROWN in Chemung and Bradford Counties

I have the following information to share:
George W. Brown b. 1911 in Elmira, Chemung, NY to
Clarence W. Brown b. Jan 1870 in Erin, Chemung, NY and
Evelyn Houghton.
In the 1870 census of Erin, NY, the family appears as follows:
NAME                 AGE     PLACE OF BIRTH
G.W. Brown           38      Pennsylvania
Hannah Brown       35      New York
     Rasa (Rosa?)    14      Michigan
         Stella          12      Minnesota
        Frank           10      PA
        Myra             7      PA
        Sarah            5      PA
     Clarence        4 mos   NY
**the index search on Ancestry lists this family as "Braun," but after viewing the record, I believe it is clearly spelled "Brown."**

I have an 1860 census record from Smithfield, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania (just down valley from Elmira) that shows this family:
NAME                 AGE     PLACE OF BIRTH
George W. Brown      28      Pennsylvania
Hannah Brown          26      New York
             Lucilla         4      Michigan
            Harriet         2      Minnesota Territory
**information format has been "paraphrased" for ease of posting**

Doesn't this appear as if the two listings are for the same family?  I am about 90% certain of it, based on this and other circumstantial evidence.  But the oddity of the oldest children changing names is rather irksome, and casts just that small shadow of doubt.
If anyone has information that can substantiate or decidedly refute this connection, please let me know.
To continue the search, I would like to know if anyone is able to confirm or deny the connection of this George W. Brown with a George W. Brown b. 1832 Bradford Co., PA, son of Obadiah Brown Jr. (listed elsewhere in this site).

Subject: COUCH
Date: 5/27/2007

Dear Joyce Tice,
I am Arthur Stephen Couch III and as get older I have renewed interest in tracing my father's family historx. Ny grandfather was Arthur S Couch, who was born in Elmira, New York in 1854. He married Josephine Hamer (other versions were Taylor or Wells) and they lived at 327 Lake Street, Elmira.

I have been told my grandfather was the co-owner of a large carriage factory (that later burned down) and that he was a close friend of Mark Twain. They had four children: Ethel, Amy, Clarence and my father, Arthur Stephen Couch, Jr. Later my grandfather and his wife moved to Buffalo, New York.

Further family conversations that I remember were that my grandfather 's family came from Danbury, Connecticut -- but I am interested in that earlier history. I have tried to use the US Census data on your website, but had no results. Could you give me some help or perhaps refer me on to other sources.

Many thanks, Dr Arthur Stephen Couch III email: arthurcouch@hotmail.com

James was a barber by trade and was born in Pennsylvania. I believe his daughter's first name was Helen and that she may have married a man by the last name of JOHNSTON and possibly was living in Bradford in 1884.

Thank you, in advance, for any and all information that is found.

From: zmschaer@mtco.com

Hello Joyce,

Two things: I think your site is one of the best on the net.

Two, I probably didn't look close enough but I was wondering about the Boyer wills. Jonathan Boyer is mentioned in your site and on a page that my daughter has is mentioned his wife's will in 1848. The particular item I am interested in is their daughter mentioned in both wills. A Susan Vanderin. Have you any idea from your searchings in the County records who Susan Boyer married? Is there anything particular that I can look into? I tried finding marriages but got so interested in the various pages I never did find any marriages.

Anyhow if you can help, Thank YOU Rose

Subject: BROMLEY, William - Elmira, NY Vicinity
From: "RUTH SAKALA", trio2259@msn.com
Date: Sun, 1 Apr 2007

I am searching for information on my Gr. Gr. Grandfather, William Bromley, who was born abt. 1822, supposedly in New York State around Elmira. Story has it that his family had some sort of silver business. He moved to PA - Horton Twp., Elk County and married a Johanna O. Donovan around 1851. I cannot find a record of his death; however he is listed in the 1860 and 1870 census. These records state he was born in NY. His wife left that area and moved without him to Coraopolis, Allegheny Co., PA in the 1890's.

In my hunt, I did find a Civil War listing for a John Montorary Bromley who was born abt. 1840 and died February 18, 1863 - from Elmira, NY. He was in Company G, Unit 83 Pennsylvania Infantry and was a Private. When I saw the Elmira listing for him, I thought he could possibly be from my William's family. As I searched your website, I could find no listing of a Bromley.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. Ruth Ann Sakala

Some went to Steelton, Dauphin Co, Pa and The Valley (Waverly, Sayre, Athens, & Ridgebury), PA area. Those of Elmira were the children of Cornelius and Mary Mahoney Regan. Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2007

I am seeking information on my great grandparents (Swissborn 1838)Charles William Hafner and (Irishborn 1846) Ellen Kirwan. They lived in Towanda 1867-1869 and moved to Chemung County 1870 (census). They were back in Towanda Borough in 1880. Charles and Ellen had several children: Mary (b1868), John (b1870), Herman (b1871), William (b1873), Julia, Frances, and Florence. Charles was a grist miller in the tri county area. The family moved to Minnesota in about 1881 when Charles took a a deputy auditor's job in Renville County, Minnesota under a Patrick H.Kirwan (I'm guessing he was related to Ellen.). Patrick Kirwan was born in Pennsylvania in 1851. Charles and Ellen lost both sons William and Herman to illness between 1880 and 1885. Both Charles and Ellen died in Minnesota 1899 and 1904 respectively. I would love to hear from anyone who might have KIRWAN or HAFNER info or connections.

I have found Andrew JACKSON living with his wife, Harriet, in the 1860 census in WI. He was a lawyer and it appears that he and his wife are from Chemung Co. NY and eventually returned there. In the census there was a Nathan Hale, age 17, living with the Jacksons. Nathan indicates he is from NY in later censuses. I am researching Betsey and Nathan HALE from Chautauqua NY and am unable to find all of the names of her children or where she is buried. This Nathan was born the year the elder Nathan Hale died. I would appreciate any information about Andrew Jackson and would love to share any information that might be helpful about the Hale family.

I am looking for information concerning my grandfather Lauren Vincent White. He died October of 1930 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery (section G). He was living in Kalamazoo, MI at the time of his death and my father was only months old. I believe he (and possibly his family) attended The Park Church in Elmira, as I have a program from a service in 1919 where he along with others are listed as in service during WWI. Other information I have suggests that he was also a member of the Elmira Elks Lodge and was employed by Wells Fargo in Elmira between 1907-1910.

Any information would be great. I don't even know his birth date so I am starting from scratch. Kevin White
