Subject: Raymond Pendergast Descendants
From: Barbara Moussa, barb.moussa@gmail.com

Hi Joyce,

I am trying to find my real Great Grandfather. My Grandfather was Raymond Pendergast adopted son of James Pendergast born 1838 in Ireland and moved and lived in New York Saratoga County. My Grandfather was born Raymond Dyer in December of 1904. My real Great Grandfather --- last name of Dyer, Married a Jennie Howard, who was my great grandmother. My G-Grandfather was in Prison somewhere within a few miles of Elmira. He was in when my Grandfather was very young so probably as early as 1910 my grandfather had a brother named Howard who was also adopted by James Pendergast and he was born in 1908. My Grandfather remembers as a young boy living across the street from a large wall and the family thinks it was the prison wall in Elmira??? No one in the family knows anything' else. Can you help? We think it was a maximum security prison, we think he was in for murder, we think he was Irish, but the name appears to be British.

my email is barb.moussa@gmail.com
Thank you Barbara Moussa

Lena M. HOTALEN Neff was the daugher of Daniel A. HOTALEN and Emma JOHNSTON. Lena was born abt. 1890. She married George William NEFF b. July 23, 1887 in Pennsylvania; d. December 23, 1918. They had Harry N. NEFF b. 1910; d. February 15, 1910 (aged 8 days). In 1920 census Lena is listed as living on Harmon/Herman St. in Elmira, NY, living with her mother, her nephew Chester A. MAXWELL, and a boarder. SInce Lena was only 30 years old in 1920, I am guessing she probably married again. If you have any info on any of these people please contact me to exchange information.

Subject: Frank W. ROSS & Hattie A. HART Ross; Elmira; Chemung Co.
From: Nan Clarke <nanclarke@pawprintva.com>
Date: Sun, 23 Aug 2009

Hello - I am looking for descendants of Frank Ward Ross Sr. (b. 1858 or 1859, I believe at Horseheads; d. 21 April, 1923 in Elmira).  He was a physician in Elmira and m. Hattie (or Harriet) Atwood HART (b. 21 February, 1860 in GA).  She was still alive in the 1930's.  They had a number of descendants in the Elmira area at least into the early 20th century.

If you are related, I hope you'll contact me.  I am writing a book about Philomela THURSTON Newell Garrett, who is one of your ancestors!

Thank you --

Subject: Smith S. HART & Harriet NEWELL Hart; Elmira; Chemung Co.
From: Nan Clarke <nanclarke@pawprintva.com>
Date: Sun, 23 Aug 2009

Smith Screven HART married Harriet Atwood NEWELL in January 1856.  Smith b. 10 April, 1806 and d. 1865 or 1866.  Harriet b. 1819 in Bombay, India, and d. between 1882 and 1890.  Both died in Dorchester, GA, where Smith was a planter.  They married in Elmira but I have not been able to find a marriage record or any evidence that they lived in Elmira.   A  reliable genealogy of Smith's family indicates that they were from GA and SC since the Revolution or earlier.

Harriet's uncle, Ariel Standish THURSTON, married Julia Clark HART (b. 6 July, 1813 and d. 17 April, 1844) of Elmira.  I believe her family was long established in the Elmira area.

I don't know if Smith was related to the Elmira Harts, or if their having the same last name was just a coincidence.  Anyone who can help me to find a connection, or who can provide information on Smith and Harriet's marriage, deserves a gold star!

Incidentally, Harriet's father, Samuel NEWELL, was one of the first missionaries to go overseas and establish a foreign mission.  That mission was established in Bombay in 1813.

I am looking for information on the school founded by Clarissa THURSTON in 1846 or 1847.  It was evidently closed in 1864 due to Clarissa's ill health.  There is some info on the website, but I am looking for additional details for a book I am writing about Clarissa's sister Philomela.

The  website refers to the school by several names: Elmira Seminary, Ladies Seminary, Elmira Ladies Seminary, Clarissa Thurston Seminary, and Private Academy for Young Women.  At one point it was located at the corner of Main and Third.

Thanks to any one who can offer information or point me in the right direction.

COMPTON, Irene. I would like to find out where she went after moving to Buffalo in 1920. Her father
Frederick L. Compton was from Elmira and her mother Josephine Bessette originally resided Ticonderoga.
Somehow they got together in Albany and had Irene in December of 1899. The parents moved back to
Elmira where Frederick died in 1909. The mother stayed in Elmira and in 1919, Irene married my relative
Charles Newberry. Irene, Charles, Josephine, and Josephine's mother Antoinette Bessette were living in
Buffalo in 1920. I have checked the death indecies for all of them up to about 1940 with no avail. I just
found out that Irene's sister Edna L died in Elmira in 1989.

Hi,

I was searching for my mother when I came across your website. Her name is mentioned as the honorary daughter of Lyman Kramer who passed away in 2005. Below are the details I know.

Birth name: Kathryn CUNNINGHAM
currently known as: Kathryn Frisk, Kathy Frisk

Last I knew, she was still alive and living in Elmira, possibly with a person by the name of Kim.

Much appreciated if anybody can help me find her.

Thanks
Rita Tay.

From: Michael Sullivan, gantol@wowway.com
Date: Sat, 06 Jun 2009

I am looking for the descendants of my Great Aunt Mary Gilroy Coleman who lived in Elmira,Chemung,NY on 726 Herrick St per the 1930 US census.

She was born in Pittston, Luzerne,PA to Patrick Gilroy and Mary Langan around 1886. Her siblings were Martin, John Francis (married Mary Walsh),Henry (died in childhood) and Agnes (my grandmother who married John Garrett of Avoca,PA and moved to Detroit,MI). Mary Gilroy married John Coleman (born 1887 in Scranton,Luzerne,PA) in around 1911 most likely in Scranton,PA.

They had seven children of whom the 1st three were born in Luzerne,PA. The last four were born in Elmira,Chemung Cty, NY. The children of Mary and John are: Mary born around 1912 in PA, Margaret born around 1913 in PA, John born around 1915 in PA, Agnes born around 1916 in NY, Robert born around 1919 in NY, and, evidently, twins Donald and Dorothy bron around 1922 in NY.

Mary's husband John Coleman worked for the New York Central Railroad as forman in the round house. He died in a train accident in the round house. As a young child in Detroit,MI , I remember when my Great Aunt Mary, then a widow, came by train to Detroit and stayed with her sister, my grandmother, Agnes Gilroy Garrett. Mary was known to us as Aunt Maime - she was so much fun. Somehow over time when Great Aunt Mary (Maime) and my grandmpther died, contact with the Coleman's was lost.
