MY father Francis DONALDSON told me he was born in Elmira. I have traced back to my great grandparents Arthur L. DONALDSON and Gertrude DONALDSON from the 1930 census. Also living in the household were their daughters Edith G. and Emma G. DONALDSON and my grandfather Francis R. DONALDSON and his wife ( my grandmother) Cecelia DONALDSON. When my father died a few years ago I was told my grandmothers maiden name was GARDNER. That there was a GARDNER Mountain in Pa. where her family lived and were coal miners. I have been unable to find this mountain. Does anyone out there know of such a place?
Thank you, Deborah DONALDSON

I am trying to locate a bible that my grandparents Lester and Minnie Miles had at one time. They lived in Corning New York. I had an Uncle that lived in Elmira and know some of his family are still living in the house he owned on Third Street. I am hoping some one can help me. My Uncle was known as Dor Miles. I know he worked for the city. My father told me that the only thing he had to go by for his birth date was in this bible. Would love some help. There were four children that lived. My father was Raymond Glenn, Roy, Virginia married name was Smith also lived in Elmira. Thank you Janet Miles Johnston
I am trying to track down the siblings of my 2G-grandfather. His obituary, from The Ovid (Clinton Co, Michigan) Register-Union, 10 Jan 1929, states, "Mr. Clark leaves one brother, George Clark, of Dundee, New York and two sisters, Mrs. Eliza TERWILLIGER of Elmira, N.Y., and Mrs. Sidney Sullivan of San Juan, California." I am hoping that you folks could help me out with Eliza (CLARK) Terwilliger. This mention is the only record that I have of her. I had someone check the 1930 census and she was not found. She was most likely born in Ireland. I know this is a long shot, but can any of you help me out with her husband's name? I have a possible match on the 1880 census (before she was married) that would place her year of birth at about 1862.
Thanks for any help that you can provide. Stephanie Vert

I was revisiting the Joyce Tice page for Thomas Keeney and Mercy Lamb at rootsweb and wonder if either of you might be able to help me. I am descended from the CT Keeneys and have been trying to unravel a number of questions. High on the list currently is determining the children of Alexander Keeney (1709-1814). The documentation seems particularly weak here, perhaps because Alexander lived so long he outlasted his kids in many cases, denying us probate help. Before I start, here are some links to my pages to verify that I give as well as I get!
http://www.langeonline.com/#Keeney
http://www.langeonline.com/legacy/683.htm
http://www.langeonline.com/legacy/742.htm
http://www.langeonline.com/Keeney-Kinney-McKinney.htm
My interest in Alexander stems from the following:
Commemorative Biographical Record of Hartford County: (1901, p.959) "CAPT. ARTHUR B. KEENEY is descended from a long-lived ancestry, who have been born and bred on the old homestead farm in Hartford County which they have tilled for more than one hundred years. His great-great-grandfather was Tell Keeney and his son, Richard Keeney (our subject's great-grandfather), attained the phenomenal age of 105 years. His grandfather, Russell Keeney died at the age of eighty-eight, and his father, Porter Keeney, lived to be nearly eighty. All his paternal forefathers were farmers." http://www.langeonline.com/Heritage/arthur.htm#Hartford
Arthur is my GG grandfather. This recap is wrong. Richard (III) did not live to 105 he lived to 81. His father was also Richard (II)(Tell was perhaps a nickname). Richard (III) was married to Chloe _____ . To my knowledge no one has placed Chloe's parentage definitively but it is believed by some that she is a daughter of Alexander (father of Thomas?) That's what I want to prove. There is a Charles reported as a child of Alexander; the thought is that Charles/Chloe are one and the same (perhaps misread or miswritten in a church record). If that were true, the article above would make sense, i.e. there was a 105 year old grandfather... on the maternal side. To my knowledge, the only 105 year old Keeney was Alexander. If cousins Richard Keeney and Chloe Keeney married then all is well by me!
Can you direct me to any primary source for Thomas' parentage, as well as any info on his siblings, which might lead to the answer the above question? I just received his pension file and was disappointed to find no family names. I was doubly disappointed to find the file extracted on the rootsweb site after I paid for the file!! As an aside, it took 3 weeks front to back to get his file from NARA; how's that for turnaround?
Thanks in advance for your help. I am best reached at home at paul@langeonline.com.

I am looking for a William REYNOLDS, born 27 Nov 1805 somewhere in New York. He married Jane P. DeGROFF 20 Oct 1835 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, NY and died 16 Jul 1870 in Elmira, Chemung County, NY. In the 1855 NY state census, William REYNOLDS is listed as being born in Chemung County. In the 1865 NY state census, he is listed as being born in Chenango County, NY. The death certificate for his son, David, lists William's place of birth as Sullivan County. Hi,
Does anyone know where I can find any information on a semi-pro baseball
team before 1937. It would be in Elmira, NY. I believe my Father-in-Law played
but cannot find anything on this subject.
Thank you, Sharon D'Andrea
Hi Joyce,
I read through your many queries but was unsuccessful in finding the desired
information.
Tioga County, NY was organized in 1788 as the so-called "Old Town of Chemung" and included what is now the town of OWEGO, created in 1791. Both towns originally embraced much other territory than is now to be found within their borders. In 1813 it was found advisable to exchange names, whereby the district to the west became TIOGA. As CHEMUNG, the region had its first settlers in 1785 in the persons of SAMUEL and WILLIAM RANSOM.
I would like to learn more about the RANSOM family.MARY RANSOM (3 April 1782-16 Dec.1855) was born in CT and died in Danby, New York.
She married ABRAHAM GARDNER (Dec. 1783-10 Apr. 1861) born Scranton, PA and died in Danby, NY.
Is there a town in CHEMUNG where I could call or write for records on both Samuel and William who planted apple trees and established the first nursery in their area.
Thank you in advance for your help and your website.

Joyce,
My name is Jim Riley, I was born in Watkins Glen, N.Y. in 1940. I now
live in Ocala, Fl.
I am trying to trace my Dad's family. He was supposedly born in Pine Valley, N.Y. in 1906. His parents were John C Riley and Alice Webber Riley. John C Riley worked on the railroads in the Elmira area.
That's as far back as I have been able to confirm so far. My Dad and Mom and his parents as mentioned above are buried in St Mary's Cemetery in Horseheads, N.Y.
There are a bunch of Riley's that lived in the Town of Catlin and I believe that that may be many of my ancestors, but I have not been able to make a clear confirmation from the Census data that I have searched.
If you could steer me a little it would be much appreciated

Hello, Can anyone tell me if there is a Lake Conongue or Lake Konniongo (I know these are probably terribly misspelled, please forgive me, I am guessing and trying to spell phonetically) in the Elmira area or the Tri-Counties area? The only other possibility is that Lake St. and Conongue St. intersect in Elmira and the person I am looking for lived there. Does anyone know if these streets intersect? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. Darla Hogaboom

Hello Joyce:
I live in Markham,a town just north of Toronto, Canada. I came to Canada in
1968 from Cape Town South Africa.
My last name is somewhat unusual and unique in North America, so I was intrigued
to read on the web about your Elmira Office Records which contains the name of
Carl Ludski. He died at the age of 71in 1892.
Could you direct me to further information about Carl? Were there relatives?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Joyce,
Robert Gillette here.
I just stumbled across a webpage at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/church/welsb140.htm
which has the title,
"Baptist Church Records for Wellsburg NY in Chemung County 1789 to 1833."
It has numerous references to a couple of people in my family tree,
Philander D. Gillette
Dan A. Gillette
and
Elder Platt.
I am wondering if you know who is the person most pugged in to the records of that church (and genealogically inclined) that I might correspond with. If you do, could you email me their contact info?
Or, if you prefer, you could email them the info I am talking about from that page, and maybe they'll get in touch?
I appreciate whatever help you can give. Again, it is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/church/welsb140.htm and here is the info from it:
The webpage apparently says that on page 145 of something that on April 17 1830 "2ly voted br Dan A Gillette assistant Clk and then proceded to inquire of one anothers minds" It says on page 147 of this record (whatever it is) "2ly Voted that Brother Gillette and Brother Fuller visit Brother Smith"
And on page 149 that on May the 4th "Voted to give Br Dan A Gillette a letter of recomendation"
Page 152 "Voted br Hillman moderater and D A gillette"
On page 160 it says "Southport Tioga Co N.Y. Sept 10th 1833
Agreeable to the request of the Southport & Chemung Baptist Chh the following
pasters & Deacons & Brethren Convened in Council with them at their meting house
in Southport for the purpose of Setting apart to the work of gospel Ministry

3 Southport & Elmira their paster P.D. Gillette Brethren John Bovere & and William

on page 162 "that Eld Gillette give the charge & Eld Platt give the right hand of fellowship ... he council adjourned to meet at 9 oClock tomorrow morning Benediction by Eld Gillette ... The Council then proceeded to assign the parts & it was unanimously Resolved that Eld Gillette make the ordaining prayer Eld Wise give the Charge & the Eld Doty offer the concluding prayer ... Philander D Gillette Moderator James L Burdick Scribe"
PS, I am doing research on all the Gillettes related to these people.
Researching CHARLES C. LEWIS married Eliza ? November 9, 1843 in Southport, Chemung Co., New York. Children born in New York: Evaline, Ella Josephine, Sarah, Celia. Charles states in Civil War Records he was born in Tompkins Co., NY. Eliza states in later census she was born in PA.
Any info appreciated.

My Miller family lived in Clark Co., Illinois area from about 1820 through the rest of that century. There were several Miller families from New York in Clark County listed in the 1820 through 1850 census records. My Hugh Miller was born in New York about 1790. His father, Hugh Miller, was born about 1765.
I found a Hugh Miller listed in the 1800 and 1810 Tioga County, Elmira Twp. Census Records, which appears to fit in with my family. Close to Hugh Miller are listed the Robert and William Miller families, both names which Hugh Miller Jr. used in naming his first three sons.
Subsequent to an earlier email to Tioga County, I find that Elmira is now located in Chemung Co., both counties being close to Pennsylvania. One of the Millers who was born in New York and lived in Clark Co., Illinois was married to someone from PA.
Robert Miller, son of my Hugh Miller Jr., named one of his sons William Ketchum Miller, which would indicate a connection with a Ketchum family somewhere along the line. Also, Hugh Miller Jr. was married to a Mary Gorden or Gardner, and I believe his father, Hugh Miller was married to an Emma Barr.
Would you know whether anyone has already researched the Miller families of Tioga and Chemung Counties, or whether they have checked the probate files of the counties. I also understand that Hugh Miller of Elmira or Big Flats was a revolutionary war soldier and don't know if that has been checked or exactly what it is I would be checking.
Thank you for any suggestions or other information.
Dear Joyce,
I have a friend in Ohio, Carol Kiley.I am trying to locate in Ireland where her
ancestral home is. She believes it to be in Co., Clare. On your site, I notice
two of your Kileys married people by the name Frost. There were a lot of people
by that name from Co., Clare, Ireland. In her background appears the name
Purcell, and a Bridget of that name married a Frost in Sixmilebridge, Co.,
Clare in the 1840s. Carol is coming to Ireland in two weeks time. I dont
expect miracles, but can you throw any light on the whereabouts of the Kiley
home, if indeed there is an Irish connection at all.
sincerely,
Brian F. Keeley
Dear Maam,
I am trying to trcak down my loyalist forebears.
I think they may have come from NY.
Ketch(or Keeck, Keetch) and Drakes' may have came from thie same area, probably
Chemung County.
I cannot find Cornelius Ketch; went to Canada in 1784, a loyalist. John went to
New Brunswick, 1783-1787, also a loyalist.
Any bio on these families? Any maps where these families may have lived pre-1800?
Thank you, Ward Ketch
Dear Joyce,
I am researching my family. My grandmother (Vivian May George) was born in Elmira
March 7, 1891. Her father was Frederick (sp?) Penniston (sp?) George, born in
Philadelphia in 1865, moved to Elmira as a boy. He worked for Dey Brothers and
then supposedly started his own dry goods business. He was also a flutist,
organized and conducted an orchestra. He moved to Syracuse in 1897.
Can you give me some tips on finding any more information?
Sincerely,
Donald B. Bishop, levesque@twcny.rr.com

Hi Joyce..
I have just been reviewing your site again, with my info in hand, and have
some questions you may can help me with.
I am looking for a grave site..the letter I have for the only info states that the funeral services were held in the Episcopal Church in Van Etten on Tues. July 16, 1907 and burial was at unknown cemetery, but it is stated that a lot was bought "just above JOHN BANDFIELD's in the new ground. The name of the person I am looking for is ESTELLA GERTRUDE CARD STEVENSON, and I find several WESTBROOK names (who were relatives..I think her sister married a Westbrook and also were related to FANNY HILL who is there also) There are CARDS there and also a John Bandfield listed..all this is on your site at WESTBROOK CEMETERY.
I just wonder if you have her name anywhere?? Her husband was FRANKLIN PARKER STEVENSON who is buried in Middleburgh Cemetery in Middleburgh, New York...I cannot find that cemetery online and wonder if you have any info on THAT cemetery. He died in 1921.
One last thing..is it possible to obtain death records/certificates from New York for these years? Is it very difficult or expensive?
Thank you for your time and ANY response will be appreciated!

Hi Joyce :
First of all I've been doing genealogical research on my family for the past
thirty four years and sent an inquiry and posted it to the following address
PABRADFO-L@rootsweb.com of which I got a favorable response from a Sherry
Vossoughi of Modesto, CA.. My inquiry was in regards to death of my great
grandmother Katherine (Dowling) Wilder who died 13 May 1875 and was residing
in Hornellsville( now Hornell, NY) and her father Laughlin Dowling who resided
in Elmira, NY on Fulton St.. This Sherry Vossoughi Easter morning sent me
information that both of the above mentioned were buried in the " S.S. Peter &
Paul Cemetery " in North Towanda Township in Pennsylvania. I was under the
impression that they were both buried in Elmira where the family had resided
for almost thirty years. She meaning Sherry enclosed your website. One strange
thing I came across about you index of Deaths Recorded 1867- 1881 Elmira,
Chemung County NY.. There seems to be a lot residents of Elmira buried there
in this one cemetery. Why ? Why not somewhere in Elmira ? In the past I've
written to the Chemung County Historical Society and got " NO WHERE " and was
politely told that New York State had to start keeping records of birth,
marriage and deaths from 1880 on. This was pointed out to me also by my Aunt
who lived in Attica and was the town clerk at that time. My dealing with this
historical society really put me off from persuing this side of the family
till I was put on to your website.
On Laughlin Dowling, I seem to have his original " Last Will " or maybe its a copy of which the county nor City of Elmira does not have and was written and signed 27 September 1871 a day before his death. Another document was signed by a Thomas S. Spaulding in the Chemung County Surrogate Court on 15 June 1874 pertaining to probate of said " Last Will ". On his daughter Kate or Katherine Wilder formerly of Hornellsville she must have died of complications due to child birth. She had her second child a Katherine Laura Wilder on 5 May 1875 and Katherine the mother died on 13 May 1875. From sketchy account from the Dowling side of the family Katherine Laura Wilder was raised by Laughlin Dowlings widow Mary and other family member's in the New York City area. And Kate or Katherine (Dowling) Wilder's husband Sherman K. Wilder took their only other child David S. Wilder that was two years of age at the death of his wife and raised him in Hornell.
Any other information on Laughlin Dowling or his daughter Kate or Katherine Wilder would be of help. One last note a head stone appears in Attica 's Forest Hill Cemetery which gives her name as Katherine Dowling death date as 13 May 1875 and gives a birth year of 1846. Enclosed in the box of old deeds and family records I found a brown paper with all the birth, marriage and deaths of all the children of Laughlin Dowling and his wife Mary Freeman and it lists Kate or Katherine being born 15 November 1840 and not in 1846 as the head stone states. Any input on this incorrect year ?

Hi Joyce,
I am interested in the Tri County Migrations. My family has origins in Bradford

100 miles of both of these areas and am interested in the migration patterns.
They also moved into Lycoming County in PA.
You have an excellent resource for the Tri Counties and I am hopeful that I can offer some volunteer assistance in the near future.

Joyce or anyone that can help,
Does anyone know who we can contact for information about this cemetery,
"SCOTCHTOWN CEMETERY", I have found two cousins that are buried here with no
markers. Their brother would like to get a marker for them. He was young and
doesn't remember exactly where they are buried.
Any help greatly appreciated.. dawfen@CQservices.com
Thank you,
Dawn Fenton

Listed in 1850 census in Elkland/Tioga Cty. PA and in l860 census Southport/Chemung Cty. N.Y.
Do you have any records on my great-great grandfather and mother or any suggestions on how to get more information ? Thank you very much. I know you may be unable to answer individual questions but thought I'd give it a try.
Thanks again!! Gail Pickel
I am making a project of trying to track any McKINNEY family in Chemung Co, NY. The McKINNEY rootsweb list has a DNA genealogy project going, but my direct ancestor had no son, and what I'd like to find is a male, no family history of adoption, surname McKINNEY from my line. If I can find a documented real live person, who is willing to participate in the DNA project, I'd even help with the $$ if needed.
In 1818 Two brothers, John and Matthew, and two married sisters (surnames MILLSPAUGH and WILSON) (of 13 McKINNEY siblings, sons/daughters of Matthew, son of Arthur) came as pioneers to "Johnson Settlement" known as Catharine, later to settle at Veteran, from around Goshen, Orange County NY. Both brothers had a good number of sons and grandson, many/most of whom I found on the 1850 census at Elmira as carpenters and carpenter joiners.
I took a shot yesterday at hunting for current McKINNEY phone numbers at Chemung Co, got listings for 4 males - and called the only wrong one first! I'll be getting a family tree as best they can make up soon, said they had no known genealogy nut in the family.
So. If y'all out there are or have my McKINNEY family who've moved away, give me a yell!
*slight change of topic. I am trying to find resources now on Scots or Scot-Irish settlers in Montgomery twp, Ulster (later Orange) Co, NY from 1700. I'm scouring the 1790 right now for obvious Scot names, not just my Arthur McKINNEY in process of learning when they came and from where, what were the circumstances of emigration, &c. Anybody gotta clue?
Thank you all for any help.
