I recently got ahold of a couple of cards that belonged to my grandfather, Fred GROMES. I don't understand what these cards are. They were issued to him in Elmira, Chemung Co., NY. They are as follows:
Registration Certificate To whom it may concern, Greetings: These presents attest, That in accordance with the proclamation of the President of the United States, and in compliance with law, Fred Gromes of Elmira, precinct 3rd of 2nd, County of Chemung, State of New York has submitted himself to registration and has by me been duly registered this 5 day of June, 1917.
I'm thinking this might be a registration for Military Draft. Does anybody have any ideas?
The second card reads:
Local Board For the city of Elmira, State of New York. This certifies that Fred Gromes Order No.___, Serial No.___, has been finally classified and recorded in Class 5-E (Form 1007-PMGO..See Sec. 110, S.S.R.)
Back of card reads:
War Department Official Business   Local Board for City of Elmira, State of New York
I have no guesses on this one. Can anyone help me figure this out? Thank you! (Sorry, No Name Signed)

I'm just beginning to search this location for records relating to Eliza SHAW, b. abt. 1826 in Elmira, Chemung Co., NY (obituary) and who was married 16 March 1843 in Scott County, Iowa to a Stephen D. LINDLEY (born 1818 in Washington Co., Pennsylvania).  I do not know her parents' names, but  later census records say her father was born in Scotland and her mother was born in New York. Eliza had at least one sibling, a sister named Henrietta.

I have not found any other records on this family.

Both Eliza and Stephen apparently were non-Catholic.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Following is a list of my ancestors that lived in Chemung County in the period between 1797 and 1907.  The problem I have is in linking William ROWLEY as the son of Amos ROWLEY and Elizabeth Stone.

I have modified the original e-mail hoping that by doing so the message is clearer. Please let me know if there is any additional information that I might provide that could facilitate any research that you may undertake. Any help in that regard will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You, Ronald E. ROWLEY

The 1820 census shows 5 ROWLEYs living in Elmira:
Joel ROWLEY (1), son of  Judah ROWLEY and Jemima Warren
Jacob ROWLEY (2), son of Judah ROWLEY and Jemima Warren
Salmon ROWLEY (3), son of Judah ROWLEY and Jemima Warren
Joseph ROWLEY (4), grandson of Judah ROWLEY and Jemima Warren, and
William ROWLEY (5), grandson of Judah ROWLEY and Jemima Warren.

Joseph ROWLEY and William ROWLEY being the sons of Amos ROWLEY** and Elizabeth Stone (Amos, also the son of Judah ROWLEY and Jemima Warren, died in 1809).

William ROWLEY married Patty Andrews*. Their children, determined by tracing their ages through the 1830 and 1840 census, and further substantiated by the pension file of William (E?) ROWLEY are:
     William E ROWLEY**,
     Samuel ROWLEY, and
     Erastus ROWLEY.

Erastus ROWLEY was twice married*. The first marriage was to Huldah Goff. Children from this marriage as substantiated by the 1860 and 1870 census are:
     Edmund ROWLEY,
     Charles ROWLEY,
     Judah ROWLEY**, and
     Timothy ROWLEY.

From the marriage records in Big Flats we find the following:

    1. Erastus ROWLEY of Big Flats, son of William ROWLEY and Patty Andrews, married        Emaline Comfort of Catlin…2nd marriage for both.

   2. Charles A. ROWLEY of Big Flats, son of Erastus ROWLEY and Huldah ROWLEY nee Goff, did, on the 17th day of May 1882, marry Rena (Jennie) Griffin of Horseheads (late of Catlin) daughter of E.C. Griffin and Esther Griffin nee Lyons…

**  Judah ROWLEY, son of Erastus and Huldah ROWLEY, and William E. ROWLEY are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Big Flats. Amos ROWLEY was the first to be buried in the Miller Cemetery in Big Flats.

Ohio.   My ancestor, Stephen King, had a sales circuit that covered northern PA and OH as far west as Cleveland.  My query is this.  What does W.T. stand for and does anyone have any knowledge of one S. He moved to Rochester, NY Monroe Co. before dieing in Wyoming County. He said he also lived in Syracuse, NY Onandaga Co. at one point in his adult life. He had a brother THOMAS F. This is an update on my 1998 posting and please note new email address.

James, (Edward) George and William WYNNE three businesses in Elmira in 1916. Men's Furnishings - 865 Lake St; Drugs - 867 Lake St and Shoes - 366 E Washington Av.  In July, 1915 a fire destroyed all three stores and the loss was "$55,000."  They also owned a broom factory and a sand and gravel business.  They have been found on the 1900 census living as "boarders"   They lived nearby at 863 Lake St at the home of Michael and Mary FLYNN.  George, whose given name is Edward George eventually moved to Philadelphia.

If there is anyone who has pictures of what was probably downtown Elmira at this time or who could enlighten me on this era, I would be most grateful. (Note from JMT:: See the Chemung County pages on the site for HUNDREDS of Elmira Postcards of that exact era. )

Also living in Elmira was their married brother, John H along with his wife Margaret J and daughter, Grace B (1891).   They lived on Hall St and John was a conductor for the railroad.  As far as I can tell, John is the only brother that married in this family and I would love to make contact with any one related to this family.

I am submitting a query for the following:

Electra BATTERSON Cherry of Chemung County.

She married William Cherry.  She was born in the early 1800's.

The purpose of this query is to find the name of her birth parents.  It is believed that she is somehow related to Abijah BATTERSON or his brother.  They came from Westport, CT with Sullivan's army and settled in Chemung County near Wyoming, PA (RT 47?).  There is still a chimney standing on the site of their homestead and the Batterson Cemetery is there on ridge of a ravine on the property.  There buried are Abijah and  his second wife (possibly maiden name Landon).  I am trying to find out to which line of BATTERSON Electra belongs.

Many regards,

Lisa North, decendent of Battersons of Elmira
