Hi Joyce - I have been going through cemetery lists trying to locate the grave of Elnor Sarah Getman Rumsey, when I found the notation from Doug Rumsey about Sylvester U.,b12/16/1855, d 01/25/1859, 4 y 1m 9d, son of Joshua & Elnor S. My sisters and I have been to Van Etten and walked through all of the cemeteries that we were able to find (with the help of some very nice local people). We did find our gr gr grandfather Thomas Getman in the Getman/Rumsey (now Jay Rumsey) cemetery. I'm actually trying to put together references that I have that he was the bro of Elnor Sarah, or anything else that I can find out about him or her.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Joyce,
My name is Fred Simpson. I live in Tucson AZ. My aunt, Berniece Cermak, lived in Elmira and was an antique dealer and collector there for many years. I inherited from her several antiques, when she passed away a few years ago in California.

One antique of particular interest is the bugle used by Ami F. Mulford, when he was in the 7th Cavalry in 1877. I am searching for any information on him and his relatives. An obituary would be helpful, but so far haven't found it. He died 8/4/1890 and is buried in Maplegrove Cemetery, Horseheads Township. He wrote the book, "Fighting Indians". I believe his sister was a Mrs. Rosecrans , who lived on S. Fulton street in Elmira, according to my aunt.

Any information you could give on how to find more info on Ami Mulford, his sister, or any other close relatives, would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Best regards,
Fred Simpson

Ms. Tice,
I hope that maybe you can help me. I have been trying to do an Internet search to find my paternal grandmother. She died when my father was born, and my grandfather has never talked about her and is not even aware that I know. To my knowledge, her name was Marian (I'm not sure of the spelling) Robinson (maiden name). She married my grandfather sometime between 1944 and 1946. My grandfather's name is Herbert Teitelbaum. My paternal grandmother died sometime around November 9, 1946, which is when my father was born. If you can find anything information about her, I would be eternally grateful. I have spent my whole life wondering if maybe I looked like her. Another important bit of information is that my paternal grandmother was from Painted Post, NY and is supposedly buried up there. My father was born in Manhattan, NY.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi Joyce,

Just visited your web site, and I wanted to congratulate you on the amount of information available on it. Also, the pictures are great.

There is one branch of my ancestry tree that hails from New York, but so far I have not been able to put together the pieces. The surname is Decker, and they migrated from NY to Ohio in the late 1790s or early 1800s. In particular, there is a Jerusha Decker born abt. 1810 in NY who married Joseph Williams in Licking County, Ohio and moved to Hardin County, Ohio abt 1850. Her brother (?) Ithemore Decker born 1817 in NY also moved to Hardin County, Ohio within a few years of Jerusha. With names like Jerusha and Ithemore, you would think that someone had knowledge of them, but no luck so far.

Any ideas of where to look in NY. I do not have a county listed. There is a Jerry Decker who served in the Revolutionary War from Big Flats twp. in Chemunga County, NY. He was listed in the 1790 census. My grandfather (born in 1868) was also named Jerry Decker. Jerry was not a common name at that time, and I wondered if he was named for after an earlier ancestor.

Sorry for getting too windy.
Thanks for maintaining such a nice web site.

Subj: Bolands in Warren Township 1920 Census and Patrick Godwin
Date: 9/6/2002 2:02:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time
From: egodwin@hvc.rr.com (Edward and Christine Godwin)
To: JoyceTice@aol.com

In the 1920 Census, roll625_1541, page 7B, ED 51, image 1032 which I found on through my Ancestry.com subscription, I found living with them a PATRICK GODWIN, age 9, a "homeboy" instead of son. The number of the Boland families were 184 and 185 instead of street address. 1. Where precisely would this have been in the Warren Township? 2. What would "homeboy" have meant? 3. The 184 and 185 Bolands were listed as Will(iam?) and Julia, 42 and 44. Patrick H and Ellen Boland, 70 and 63, were 185 in Census. Patrick was from Ireland

Those are my questions, and here is the context, if it may prove helpful. I believe that PATRICK GODWIN was my father whom I have been looking a long time for in PA. I had thought to find reference to him in Lackawanna County since he continually claimed to have been born there, and according to his marriage application of Mary Bernice Sweeney and Patrick Godwin in 1929 filed in Bradford County his parents were Patrick Godwin and Anna Kelly of Scranton.

Once when I was around nine years old, he took us to the countryside in PA and said that he was brought up on a farm. My mother said his mother Anna had gotten sick and the family was divided up. He showed us a stone cellar foundation to the house in which the family had lived. Next the showed us a small one room school along the side of the road. I do not believe it was too far away. In it was an old foot pedal organ. It appeared to have been abandoned. It was not large.

The time of our visit was around 1945. The roads were dirt roads. We drove a few miles and we were shown (but did not visit) a farm where he said he had lived as a child. My older brother claims they were German, but the rest of us do not remember that.

An interesting story was that he was so far from the rest of the students that he was paid to walk to school by the school district. He saved up the money and when older purchased a Ford car.

My parents were married in Towanda,PA in 1929. My mother , Mary Bernice Sweeney, lived there. She was a teacher in Bradford County, and she met Patrick near a school where she taught at the baseball diamond.

My great-grandfather James Godwin was married to an Anna Holleran and came to Scranton in 1878 according to his naturalization papers. He had died in 1893 at the age of 36.

My grandfather was Patrick Joseph Godwin married to Anna Kelly. Anna died in 1923 and Patrick Joseph in 1932--both in Scranton. I have traced all the records--death certificates, obits in newspapers, cemetery records, naturalization, city directories.

In the 1910 Census as well as the obit for Anna in 1923, only one child is listed --Joseph Godwin. However, in the 1932 obit of Patrick Joseph Godwin, my grandfather, Joseph is listed along with a John, William, Mary, and my father Patrick. William died in Scranton in 1960 (I have the death certificate and obit). Mary married an Edward Brogan and disappeared. Joseph and John cannot be found in city directories or in any death certificates in multiple year searches though PA Vital Records.

The Godwins, my parents, finally lived in Elmira, NY.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to give me.
Edward B. Godwin

I am looking date of death for a Rose M. Kelsey; wife of Philo Lewis "Lew" Kelsey. She died in 1955 and is buried in the Canfield Cemetery. The headstone only reads "1872-1955." I wrote to the Clerk at the Village of Van Etten and she stated that she could not find the records as hers were "incomplete." She had cards for each lot and a book-she even went to the headstones but still could not come up with a date.

Does anyone have any suggestions where I can look next? I would like to get her obit notice but without a month and date I can't expect someone to check a whole years worth of newspapers.

Thanks!

Joyce:
I have a huge dilemma. I own the book, History of Waverly by Charles Albertson. In it Lydia Seeley is shown to have married William Ellis. It shows her father as Samuel Seeley of Orange County. I looked on your website and found in the Families of Wells Township, Bradford County, PA Samuel Seeley, b. 2/2/1754 in Orange County NY and later removed to the Seeley Creek Valley in Chemung County. It shows he was buried at the Fitzsimmons Cemetery. It also shows he had 11 children, one of whom was listed as daughter, b. 1785-90 (1800 census), which I could presume was Lydia.

Here's the problem. In the Genealogical and Family History of Central New York, it shows William Ellis married Lydia Seeley but it shows her father as Israel Seeley of Orange County. Also on a Seeley family website it shows Lydia as being the daughter of Israel Seeley, but different birth and death dates?!?!?

I was thinking since William's father was Israel, maybe that was a misprint? Is there anyone who can help me find Lydia's true parents?

Thank You

Dear Joyce Tice,
Your site has been very helpful to me in doing genealogy research and I have used it several times. Thank you for the effort you have put into it. As time has gone on it has been a lot of fun seeing the interesting additions you have added. I love the picture of Horseheads, my gg grandfather Lewis Brewer was born there. I have a question about the cemetery records in the Breesport Bapt. Cemetery. One of my ancestors is the William Brewer that is buried there who died on 5 Jan 1850. He had a brother Daniel who also died there close to the same time. There are two Daniels listed and I cant't figure out which one would be his record. What I wondered is if there is someone you can put me in contact with that might know the locations of the graves and if that would tell us which one is our Daniel.

Thank you for your time. Sincerely Yours Mary Ann Matlock

Dear Joyce,
I stumbled across your website, but my computer abilities are about grade three grammar school level. Thought I would send this "E" mail listing my dilemma in the hopes you can steer me thru the website to try and find the data I wish to learn.

My great grand parents were born in Ireland and emigrated to the Tioga county area of Pa. To the best of my knowledge they lived in and around the Fall Brook area. I am at a dead end in trying to trace my roots back to Ireland since I do not know where or when they were born nor do i know the names of their parents'(my great great grand parents).

Here is what I know: Bridget Kelly married William F Clossey Jr around 1868 in a Roman catholic church in Tioga County. If I can find that church I can see if they have a marriage certificate for these people and In that way I can obtain the names of their parents(this is data the genealogy center in Ireland must have to conduct a search). They had two sons Michael J born 1868 and William F III born in 1870. Bridget had a first husband, John Howard who died in Pa. I don't know when, but likely prior to 1867. My grandfather, Michael, married a woman whose birth name was Catherine White and she was also born in Tioga county in Feb. 1869. They were married in Jersey City(apparently my ancestors moved to N.J. from Pa. in the late 1880's.). I would also like to get birth data on Catherine, Michael, and William as that would, hopefully, give me the ages of their parents at the time of their birth and maybe even tell me where in Ireland their parents were born. I know Catherine's parents were Bernard White and Margaret Collins. I'm pretty confident they were also married in a catholic church in Tioga county, probably around 1867 also.

Any hints you can give me in searching your website for information on these people would be greatly appreciated.
Very truly Yours, Vincent Clossey

Hello List,
I spent a few hours in Elmira today doing some genealogy research on my Rowe and Barber families--not nearly enough time!!! Hope to get there again when I can go for a whole day.

I found a reference to the Barber Cemetery at the Steele Memorial Library. It said:

(from CEMETERIES OF CHEMUNG CO., NY, page 100; on file at the Steele Mem.
Library:)

"Barber cemetery; Catlin twp., Chemung Co., N.Y.

Over the other side of the mountain west of Millport.  To get to the place,
go up the Johnson Hollow rd. to the school house, turn right on a dirt road
over 2 miles then nearly a mile through the fields.

This cemetery is very old, abandoned years ago and all grown to briers and
brush.  From 35 to 40 persons are buried there, very few of the graves were
ever marked.  It was a family plot for the Barbers, but later became a
Community burial ground.  This information was furnished by Mr. C. Sleeper,
who has the family history written out in full, also the same was told by a
resident of Milport.

Dr. Reuben Barber is buried in this cemetery.  There was a marker ling ago
to his grave.  He was a soldier of the Rev. and had 3 enlistments in the
Continentel army.  He was a guard and stood at the scaffold, when Maj. John
Andre, a British army officer, was hanged as a spy at Tappentown Oct. 2,
1780.  Dr. Barber also was a sodlier in 1812.  He died in 1845.

His wife was an Indian woman.  Her maiden name was Hannah Chegunsands.  She
(next few words are crossed out).  They had 3 children-Patience, James and
Hannah.  She is buried in this cemetery.
James Barber, their son, was a soldier in 1812.  His wife, Catherine called
by those who knew her "Aunt Kit".  She was 80 yrs. of age when she died.
James Wesley Barber, a younger member of this family, hanged himself.  He is
buried there.

Haggai Johnson and Carrie Wanzo, without dates, are all that can be
remembered being buried there."

Reuben Barber is my ancestor (4th gr-grandfather).  I am very interested in
the second paragraph above which mentions that "Mr. C. Sleeper, who has the
family history written out in full".  I take that to mean that he had a
written Barber family history.  Does anyone know anything about this?  I
didn't know who he was so searched the Tri-Counties site.  I found this
obituary, which might be his:

"SLEEPER, CHARLES W.  -  OBITUARY
Charles W. Sleeper, 89, late of Millport, died Monday morning, April 29,
1935, after a brief illness.  He is survived by four nieces, Mrs. G. Archie
Turner, Veteran; Mrs. Frank Williams and Mrs. Florence Burnett, Albany;
Josephine Bailey Doyle of Watkins Glen; three nephews, Charles S. Sterling,
Albany; Horace Brown, Buffalo; Carl Parsons, Binghamton.  Mr. Sleeper had
been a resident of Millport many years and was a charter member of the
Veteran Grange.  The body is in the Mathews & Van Buskirk funeral home,
Horseheads, until Thursday at 1 p.m., when it will be removed to the St.
Mark Church, Millport, where the funeral will be held at 2 p.m.  The Rev.
Paul Thompson will officiate.  Burial in the Millport Cemetery. "

Also found this  on Joyce Tice's Tri-County site, from History of Chemung
County 1892 - Towner:  (this may be the Mr. C.  Sleeper referred to above.)

"The first cemetery in the west part of the town was on the old Bently farm,
and was the burial place of several of the old settlers. The Millport
Cemetery Association, having control of a cemetery east of the village, was
incorporated November 18, 1870. C. W. Sleeper has been prominently connected
with the association as secretary for several Years. The original plot of
land consisted of an acre purchased of Erastus Crandall. Another purchase
was made in 1841 ; another of two acres was added about the time of the
incorporation"
I believe he is also the C. W. Sleeper who was a testator for the will of my gr-grandfather, Abram Rowe.

I don't know if Mr. Sleeper was related to the Barber family, but I am wondering where the written family history (referred to above) is, if it still exists. I'm hoping someone on the list will have some info about this.

Hello,
I maintain an online inventory of North American suspension bridges "past and present". I recently acquired a postcard showing a suspension bridge across the Chemung River. Here is a scan:

I have been looking for more information about this bridge and if any other similar bridges ever existed in the Chemung area. A "friend of a friend" mentioned that a "Fishler" may have been involved in the construction of two such bridges in the Chemung area. I found the bridge comment on this page:

about George Fishler. Would you happen to have or know about more information about Fishler's bridge activities, the bridge on my postcard, or any other 19th-century suspension bridges in the area?

Thank you for your time,

Hi Joyce,
I am looking in the Tri-county area and also NY for the MEADE family.

I actually go back to Sayre, Bradford County, PA to a George Meade b. in New York, who married Sarah Amos Lentz. George was born in 1843 and in NY. That is all I know. My guess is I am probably looking at one of the counties in NY that borders PA.

This family was also know to be from the WilkeBarre area.

If you can point me in the right direction as to where I might find George's parents, that would be great. His son, was named Robert Asa Meade b. 1869 and there is an Asa who may have been his brother born in 1840. I strongly think that he and George could have been brothers. George also had a son named Alfred b. in 1879. So two sons, Robert Asa and Alfred, and a brother named Asa.

I have an old grave stone picture with the name Mary E. Meade 1864 to 1926 on it. It says wife of Ira B. Doty. Not sure of the relationship.

As you can see I don't have much to go on except I know they were from this region. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi - I am researching my Mother's side of the family (Peterson) and wondered if you could help.

My Grand-Father, Albert Daniel Peterson Sr, was born in Chemung (probably village) Dec 25, 1854 (this year may be wrong - and might possibly be 1852) and his son Albert Jr was born in Elmira, NY during Jan 1903. My grand-father married Ladorna Winans and my grand-father had two brothers named Edward and John. They, for the most part, later moved to New York State (Cortland area - possibly Candor) and New Jersey (Paterson). I would guess they all moved some where around the turn of the century - give or take 10 years (My Mother, Ladorna Peterson, was born in Paterson, NJ in August 1911 - and married later into the Ackerman family).

I have never been able to find out any information beyond my grand-fathers.

I understand from the Chemung Country Public Info folks that there are still a lot of Petersons in the area and I wrote a postcard to one of them today (an Albert E. Peterson in Pine City, NY).

Thanks so much for any information on the family that you might have and if you could post this information where other Petersons could see it I would appreciate it greatly.

Hello Joyce;
I am on the trail of the parents of my GG Grandfather, Oliver Jessup, b. March 20, 1805,Orange, Little Britain, NY. It seems that he moved at some point in his early youth to Newfield where he married Chloe Thompson, November 26, 1828. My father, Lloyd Laverne Jessup, b.May 23, 1896 in Erin (parents William Lewis Jessup, b. April 5, 1866 in Newfield and married Minnie Witter(, b. January 31, 1871 in Owego) September 20, 1893 in Owego.

In an interview with my father (d, Feb. 15, 1973) for a college project he said that at age four the family they moved to "Big Flats to a community called Sing Sing, named after a creek which flowed into the Chemung River." The move was made "because my grandfather (James Jessup) lost his job during the 'Cleveland Panic" during which my father and grandfather "lost practically all worldly goods.."

He married Nellie Borden in Horseheads Nov. 25, 1917.

In all of my research, as a novice, Oliver just seems to have "happened" in Little Britain. My search now brings me to Big Flats.

I am open for ANY and ALL suggestions!! I plan to be in the area in early October and would like to narrow my research to those places which might prove most productive.

I have only visited the Horseheads/Elmira area a couple of times and am not familiar except via internet maps, etc.

Thanks for your assistance.
Bill Jessup

My name is Stacie Heyen Goble, I am searching for any clues on my greatgrandfather, his name was William Henry Jackson and he was possible born around 1893 or sometime earlier, the papers I have on him say he was born in Chaugne, NY, but there is no such place, so I am wondering if he said Chemung and the pronunciation and spelling got skewered somewhere. The only information I have on him is that he married a Blanche Gertrude Shirley in Sep 1920 in Hennepin Co Minn, other than that and my grandmothers birth certificate in June 23, 1921 I have no other information on him.

Sincerely
Stacie Heyen Goble
