I am trying to locate birth, death and marriage information for the following persons:

Samuel Seeley Matthews (possibly Seely Mathews) B. 22-Jan-1821 D. 15-Sep-1907
Hector, NY Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira NY
   wife Susan Canfield
      child Sylvester P Matthews B. 23-Dec-1845 D. 23-Dec-1932
West Elmira, NY Logan Cemetery, Logan, NY

I have no information about Susan other than her being listed with Samuel and children in the 1860 Federal Census and her name appearing with Samuel's on Sylvester's gravestone or cemetery records. Samuel was raised in Hector, NY, but apparently resided in Elmira most of his life. I have no idea where Susan came from. Sylvester married an Emma Peterson and resided in the Hector area.

From: bobandalta@citlink.net (Bob & Alta Thayer)

I'm in the final stages of writing my parents' biography. One thing that has escaped my discovery concerns my father's paternal grandparents during the 1800's - some of which was in Catlin, Chemung County, New York. My father's grandfather was Robert Harper Thayer (RHT) - born on 1/24/1824, possibly in Catlin, NY. RHT's twin brother was Charles Carrol. RHT & CCT's parents were John Clark Thayer & Amna (Parker) Thayer. My father's grandmother was Amna (Crawford) Thayer. Amna was the daughter of Judge John Crawford & Mary (Catlin) Crawford. Amna was born on February 12, 1823 in Catlin, NY. She married RHT on March 24, 1847 in Catlin, NY. They had 2 sons - Brant Crawford Thayer (8/5/1849 to 1941) & my grandfather, Robert Frank Thayer (6/23/1862 to 2/16/1921).

RHT, Amna & Brant were listed on the census forms for Catlin, NY for 1850. The 3 of them moved to Timbuctoo, California where they were listed on the 1860 census. RHT died in Virginia City, Nevada in 1863, whereupon Amna and the 2 boys returned to her parents' home in Catlin (or Moreland), NY. Amna (Crawford) Thayer had several brothers & sisters - Mrs. Mary Fox of Moreland, Dewitt Crawford of Odessa, Marcus Crawford, Joseph Crawford, Nelson Crawford, Mrs. Julia Robertson of Veteran, Mrs. Lucy Fox of Moreland, Mrs. Frances Filkins of Moreland, & Mrs. Adelia Catlin of Moreland. Amna died on March 14, 1892. According to the newspaper clipping that I have, her funeral was conducted by Rev. H.H. Kellogg. All of her brothers and sisters & her 2 sons were at the funeral. She was intered at the Havana Cemetary in Moreland, Schuyler County, NY on March 16, 1892. According to the newspaper clipping, Amna was the first white child born in Catlin.

My search for the Havana Cemetary in Moreland has been fruitless. Also, I am trying to find the burial place of Amna's husband, Robert Harper Thayer. Was he buried in Virginia City in August of 1863, OR did Amna ship his body to the Havana Cemetary? Was she buried beside RHT on March 16, 1892? Does the Havana Cemetary exist today under a different name? Thank you,

Hi Joyce,
I have been spending an enormous amount of time browsing the Tri-Counties site. It has been great! I have found some family information that has been helpful to me.

I was wondering if you could help me further? I found a mention of Edward Hall, who started a store in 1833 and the town was named Hall's Corners, later changed to Van Ettenville. My grandmother Hall told me a story, years ago that also mentioned this town in our family history and it was named after someone in the family. Do you know the best way for me to get more information in regard to that? Unfortunately, I live in Washington State, so I have to do most of my research on line or by mail/phone calls. I am happy to do as much as I can, but am not sure where to start.

Thanks very much! Tracey Johnston

Dear Joyce,
Thank you for doing such a wonderful public service for those of us interested in family histories in the Tri county area.

I am searching for names and histories of parents of John T. Osowski, born in Costello, Penn., who moved with his parents after a flood (that wiped out Costello) to Elmira. My grandfather, John T. died (I think) in Feb. 1945. I believe his parent's name, my great grandfather/mother, were Martin & Frances Osowski, but am not totally certain. I do know that my great aunts had the New England Kitchen on Lake Street in about 1936.

I hope to eventually determine (by going backwards) to find when my great-grandparents came to this country or if they were born in the US. Their names are quite Americanized, so am wondering if THEIR parents came from Europe (Poland).

I am very new to geneology, don't know all the "ropes", so any help would be appreciated.

Yours sincerely,
Barbara Boyd Hoehn

Subj: Patrick and Sarah Haggerty (Haggert as reported on your site).
Date: 08/10/2003 10:01:20 PM Eastern Daylight Time
From: NAVILLUS12
To: JoyceTice

Joyce:
This is scary. I have been tracing my ancestry. My mother was Teresa Anna Haggerty, b. 1906. Her father was William John Haggerty, b. 1858, Her grandfather was Patrick Haggerty, b. 1827 reportedly in Donegal, Ireland. That's as far as I can get with the records I have recovered.

Today, I was searching the 1840 Census. I was guessing that Patrick Haggerty's father's name might be Patrick. There were seven Patrick Haggertys in the 1840 Census. There was one from the Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York. That Patrick had a son between the ages of 10 and 15 in 1840. My Patrick would have been 13 years old in 1840.

So I went on the Internet to find something about Big Flats, Chemung County, New York. Low and behold, I found your site which contains cemetery information relating to Patrick and Sarah Haggerty (Haggert as reported on your site).

If this Patrick and Sarah are my great great grandparents, I am the luckiest guy in the world to have found them. I don't know where to go from here. Would you be kind enough to give me a suggestion? I would like to determine if Patrick and Sarah came from Donegal. Do you think there may be a record in the Town of Big Flats or in Chemung County?

I would greatly appreciate anything you may do for me. Thank you for reading this.
Sincerely,
Lawrence M. Sullivan

I am looking for Jacob BROWN b 15 Aug 1782 in Somers, Tolland, CT who married Ann BACON b 19 Sep 1686 Hartford, CT. Family lore and book on Menard County Illinois says this family left Cemung, NY for Sangamon County, IL. The first land records in Illinois were 1824. The John Carroll Power book, Early Settlers of Sangamon County, Illinois says that a child, Lucy M. BROWN was born to Jacob and Ann in 1820 in Greene County, Pennyslyvania so there is a small window of about 4 years in Chemung. I do know that Jacob father, Jacob BROWN died 16, Mar 1820 in St. Lawrence, New York. To whom it may concern:

I am searching for a needle in a haystack. I know very few facts about the person for whom I am searching. This query concerns a woman named Carrie SWEET of Southport & Elmira, daughter of William F. and Mary SWEET. Carrie was born most likely at Erwin, Steuben County, NY, in Mach/April 1864. In 1882 she is listed in a Directory of Elmira as a music teacher living with her parents.

Carrie is said to have married a Mr. Backer, but the given name of Mr. Backer is unknown. Carrie also appears to have been deceased by 1900.

One possibility is that Carrie might have married a Mr. Emery Backer. Both Carrie and Emery lived in the 5th ward of Elmira in 1880. Emery was 18 years old in 1880 and Carrie was 15 years old. However, it appears as if Emery had been married to an Addie TANNER who died in 1891 and is buried in Tioga County, NY, although this could have been Emery's second wife..

Emery Backer was a showman and ran a traveling circus around the Elmira area in the 1890s and early 1900s. Emery died in 1914, leaving a widow (name unknown) and two daughters - Mrs. Leon S. Brown of Brookfield, NY, and Maude Backer of Nichols, Tioga County, NY.

What was Carrie's fate? Any help anyone can offer to solve this puzzle would be much appreciated.

Thank you. Bob Phillips in Chillicothe, Missouri

I am trying to connect my husband's gggrandfather to a family I have found mostly in Chemung and a few references for Tioga. I live near Youngstown, Oh so it is hard for me to get to the area to do these lookups myself. His name is James Ward DUDLEY. He was born 4/1797 and seemed to go mostly by his middle name. He married Sally WELLS in 1822 and had the following children: Horace W.(b.1823), Frances (b abt. 1825), Harriet E.(b.1828), Henry C.(b. 1831), James, George, and Louis (b.1840). Sally died in 1844 and a few years later he married a widow by the name of Helen Cole. James Ward died 9/18/1876 in St. Paul, Minn. I have him listed in Smithport, Chemung co. in the census record for 1840 & 1850 and in Elmira Village, Tioga co. for 1830.If anyone knows if the following records from you site have anything more than the brief listing, I would appreciate the information.

1. From the Elmira Death Records 1867-1881: DUDLEY, Henry Case, single, died 8/6/1867 at the age of 36y, 4m, 4d. He was the son of Ward and Sally DUDLEY.

2. Elmira Gazette Abstracts 1844-2: 11/14/1844: DUDLEY, Sally, died in Corning, Steuben co., NY 10/30/1844....wife of Ward DUDLEY, in the 46th year of her age...one of the first members of the Episcopal Church of this village...

3. From 1862 Elmira Weekly Advertiser and Chemung County Republican Abstracts: 8/16/1862: The obsequie of the late Lieut. W.L. DUDLEY were attended yesterday at the Congregational Church. Mr. Beecher delivered a very feeling and impressive discourse.

I know this may be asking a lot, but I would really appreciate it if there is any info that can further my research. I have been trying to find some sort of trail for George Albert Dudley before he entered the Civil War for more than 20 years (and he is the original person I started with in my genealogy search.)
Thank you very much in advance!
Cindy Dudley

Hello Joyce, my name is John Dempsey. I live in Fairhope, AL. The man that I was named for was my Great Uncle Jack Dempsey. He was the Chief of Police in Olean and from what I understand is a legend in there. I was going through some old books and I found a New York State Legislature Manual from 1871. On the cover is "Finton Dempsey compliments of David Hill". Written on the inside of the back cover is "Finton Dempsey Elmira, NY". I have looked around the Web for info on this man and have been unsuccessful. I have found "Fenton Dempsey of Elmira". Is it just a case of Misspelling? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, John Dempsey

I know my GF James McDonald was born in Elmira, NY on Nov 22 1882. His father was a Gold mine broker in a bank. At the age of 3 he was sent to live with his grandparents (?McDougle?) in Colorado Springs. In 1886-7 his parents had another child, a daughter. I believe his mother died in a flu epidemic, and his father was deceased by 1917 when he married my GM. I have been unable to discover any information on his birth, his parents, or his sister. Any advice and/ or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Kathy Hollinger
