   Hi Joyce,
I received an email from Tom who recommended that I contact you for some answers to a question or two.  I was there two years ago doing some research on my family:  OAKES.  My Dad was born in Elmira, and I was able to get his birth certificate when I was there.  I also found in the public library a number of the Elmira City Directories, but the library did not have all the years.  I did find OAKES, ALFRED (my great grandfather's brother);  and OAKES, SUSANNA  (my great, great, grandmother) listed in 1896, 1901, 1905, 1908, but they were not listed in 1912.   I need to search the Elmira City Directories, years 1909, 1910, and 1911 for OAKES, ALFRED;  OAKES, SUSANNA to find out when they left Elmira;  and the years before 1896 to find out when they actually arrived in Elmira.   I was told that the ?genealogical society of Elmira has all those directories.

Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance for any time, and effort you expend in helping me.  Any other information about sites or resources that would help me in my genealogical quest would be appreciated as well--especially since it's not possible for me to get there any time soon.

  Sincerely,
  Ron Oakes

Joyce, I have been enjoying perusing your wonderful web site the last couple of days.  I am researching the Squires family from Scioto County, OH, and have been led to Nathaniel Squires, born Oct. 7, 1779 in NY (Chemung Co.?)  Was he a son of the early settler, John Squires? Nathaniel married Mary Bennett, (where?) daughter of Thaddeus Bennet.  Thaddeus was the son of Ephraim Bennett, also an early settler of Chemung Co. Nathaniel later went to Scioto County, OH, as did many other Chemung Co. families such as the Bennetts, Battersons, etc.  Nathaniel died in Scioto Co. in 1852.  His son Henry married Elizabeth Richards  in that county in 1835.  Their son, Ezra Mead Squire (the "e" is now omitted from the name) was my great great grandfather.  Ezra Mead Squire, after serving in the Civil War, moved with his wife (Margaret Pool) first to Michigan, then Keokuk Co. IA, and finally to Knox Co. NE.  One of their sons was James Columbia Squire.  I have not been able to determine where the name "Columbia" came from, but could it perhaps refer all the way back to Columbia township, Bradford Co., PA? I realize how many requests for information you must get after providing so much material on your website.  Yet, when I found your old query concerning Squires, it was too enticing to pass up.  Perhaps Nathaniel ties in with Aaron, Peter, Sturges, etc.? I look forward to hearing from you and any light you can shed on Nathaniel and John Squires.

Thank you.  Judy Johnson

Joyce,
I just met a new cousin she from NY me MI, we got together over Thanksgiving in the deli of a Mijers store but still spent lots of time sharing family trees.  I notice that some of her Tice information came from Chemung NY and this is the area in where we thought my third great grandmother was born.  We have no information on her family back grown except the notes found in the journal of another cousin. Can you help us trace this family?.

Elizabeth (Eliza) Cole born Horsehead New York Sept 17 1807, she has some Mohawk Indiana blood in her line believed to have come from her mothers side.  She married widower Edward Eaton b March 11 1794 Pa, abt 1832 NY.  The first wife of Edward pos Elizabeth Van Velzer of Queens NY, daug of William Henry Jr. 7 daughters (all names start with letter M) and one son born to this union, son Jonathon stayed in Ohio with relatives after death of Mother. the daughters were given to other relatives.   the children born to the Union of Ed and #2 Elizabeth was Rachel  1834 NY, Edward 1835 NY, Joseph 1837 Mi., John 1839 MI, William 1842 MI and five other children all born in MI.  The family has lived in the following said areas, Eaton Ohio, Livingston New York, Livingston Michigan, Danville Mich., Ingham Co Mi., and Mecosta Co MI, where Eliza is buried and died Jan 01 1871.

My search is to find the parents of Edward and Elizabeth Cole Eaton and to get the proof of the first wife and children. thanks for all or any help you have to offer.

Hello Joyce,
I'm doing my family genealogy and my Great Grandfather and Great Great Grandfather were born in Elmira New York.
G. Grandfather Cornelius Styts Drake born March 1853 and his father Charles James Drake born May 1828. Would you happen to know of any information on any of this Drakes.

I had just found out that my G. Grandfather Cornelius was married before he married my G. Grandmother Martha Elizabeth
Smyers. He had some sons when he married G. Grandmother and I have not been able to find out anything on this first marriage and I would love to if possible.

Also G.G.Grandfather had been in the Civil War and am looking for that information.

Maybe you can give me some directions to follow.

I am searching for the burial site of John KINGSBURY b. 7-27-1801 d. 10-15-1866 m. Sara BEMIS  b. 3-24-1803 d. 12-5-1880.   They lived in Veteran Township, Chemung County, N.Y. from at least 1830 to at least 1850, and I think they both died there.  They moved from Spencer, Massachusetts. John was a cabinetmaker.  Sara has a son, Reuben Bemis Newhall, from a prior marriage, and John and Sara had 5 daughters: Clarinda Lucretia, Nancy, Sara Sophia, Mary, and Frances.  On the map of Millport/Veteran in 1869 there is the "Kingsbury estate" next to the tailor shop and across from Richmond Mills and the J.B. Rhoades Hotel.  Clarinda was my gr-gr grandmother, married Charles Tidd, whom I also know nothing about except that he was from Colchester, Delaware County, N.Y.

If anyone had any info about this family PLEASE e-mail me at Nanapapahouse@aol.com.  Thanks!

I am looking for information on the family of Franklin B. Darby, a dentist in Elmira, Chemung Co, NY from at least 1889 to 1910 - but I believe he was still alive & in the area in 1930, as a letter written by him to another family member in MIssouri exists, said to be dated 1930.  Dr. Franklin B. Darby is listed in the 1889-1893 census as below - I believe Fannie W is probably his wife, & Bessie C. is probably his daughter, am not sure about that, would appreciate any information anyone might have on the family including his wife, children, parents, brothers & sisters.  His business address in 1893 was 316 E. Church in 1893.  He is the son of Lucius & Sarah Perkins Darby, from Greene Village, Chenango Co, New York, & had sister Adelia Darby born about 1841, brothers Henry Tyler Darby born 1843, & Willie C. Darby born about 1855.  His father, Lucius
remarried Mary S. sometime before the 1860 census, (Sarah Perkins Darby having died in 1855).  Franklin Darby's father, Lucius Darby is a brother of my GGG Grandfather, Thomas Darby.  Thanks!

1889-1893 Elmira, Chemung Co, NY census shows:
 Bessie C. Darby, student, , boards 304 W. Church
 Fanny W. Darby, boards 304 W. Church
 Frank B. Darby, dentist, 126 E. Water, 303 W. Church

His son, Jasper STRONG (my gg grandfather) is listed in the 1850  Danby census. In the 1820 census, it looks like Reuben was employed in a manufacturing job. Can you tell me what kinds of manufacturing jobs were
there at that time? I've been searching the cemeteries for him without luck so far. His wife, Mary ABBOTT, is in Jasper's household in the 1850 census so I assume he had died by then. Joyce,
This is really an AMAZING site!  Most of my research has been done in Norway, and I am just now starting with my maternal ancestors, some of whom I have traced back to Chemung County in New York.  As I'm new to US genealogy, I was
wondering if you could give me a brief clue on how to proceed to find Jerome BUCK, born @1826 in Chemung County, NY?  I found many Bucks in the town of Chemung on your site, but the 1830 census doesn't list children by name.  Jerome ends up in Shawano, WI, where he died in 1896. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone know of a MARY PIER, wife of GIDEON RUSSELL    , who may have died in Elmira between 1867 and 1874? This is a really, really long stretch, but I'm pretty sure she was his first wife. Mary Pier's mother, Melissa (my gr-grandmother) was living in Clinton IA with Gideon Russell and his wife Emeline K. when she applied for a Widow's
Pension from War of 1812. In the application Gideon is called Mary's son-in-law, and Emeline her cousin. This odd combination escaped me for some years until I looked at the 1880 Census, and realized that Gideon and Emeline had 4 children, the first two born 1863 and 1867, and Gideon and Emeline were married in 1874. Hmmm.
Not hanky-panky, I realized, but that Mary's children with Gideon would not of course be listed as adopted since they were his natural children. My only clue to Chemung is that I have an unlabeled photo of a young woman who looks like Mary's sister Harriet (which photo is labeled Harriet Pier). The photo was taken by Seeley and Mitchell, 158 Water St. Elmira NY.

Confused? I sure am, but I hope somebody will have a connection somewhere.

Saw your info on Pykonen Lilja on the website for CAnfield Cemetery, Chemung Co, N.Y... I am searching for info on the following people with the last name Lilja:

One child of  Per Erik Glans and Kajsa Stina Schnitt was Margret Kristina Glans who married Karl Antonius Lilja:
Margret Kristina, born Oct. 29, 1866.  Margaret Kristina Glans later married Karl Antonius Lilja (Nov. 18, 1888) Karl was born     Jan. 17, 1867, in Kvillinge, Ostergotlands lan.  He was a farmer in Langby 2, Forsa, Gavleborgs lan. Their children             Karl Olof Jan.9, 1889
                        Johan Adolf June 1, 1890
                        Ernst August April 26, 1893

Karl Antonius Lilja emigrated in 1893 to the USA, his wife and children followed in 1894.

This is all from a book called: Sveriges slaktregister, 1975,Forsa..I was warned that there are some errors in this book, so the
records should be checked against town, etc records.  (I have found that records agree with Emmigration records I have found for Per Erik Glans and his second wife Carin Carsldotter ,daughter of KArl Lax (1880 from Stockholm to NYC)

Margret Glans's father was Pehr Erik Glans (born Soderlund) who was probably my great grandfather (Peter Glantz in America) Glantz/Glans means shining, lustre and is a name taken by a soldier. I have found all kinds of connections..between Per Erik's story and my Peter Glantz of MEriden, Ct. story.

A very nice genealogist from Sweden gave me this info about Per Erik and his children.  Now I am trying to trace them to the USA and I have discovered that there are lots of people with the name Lilja!  Several children from his 2 marriages and his second wifes 2 marriages, survived and came to the USA.  I am trying to unravel all the names.

My Peter(Per Erik Glans I believe) travelled from NYC to Meriden Ct....stopping in Port Chester.  I have a feeling that he had family members over here when he arrived in 1880.  If I can track his progress through NYC to Meriden, I will have completed his travels...I think the Lilja family might be the link....

Do you recognize any of these Lilja family names?  Thanks so much for any info you may have.

CORNELL, David.  I am seeking information on my gggrandfather, David CORNELL.  The 1850 census shows a David in Chemung and a David in Elmira.  I do know that David went west in about 1853.  He was born July 21, 1818 in Steuben County, NY.  He arrived in Ogle County Illinois, and I have records from thence forward.  I would, however, like to know who his parents were, and if he had a wife in New York.  He married Elizabeth Hopwood in Illinois in 1855.  He was 37 years old at this time which is rather old for a first marriage in those days.  I am thinking that perhaps his wife died, and he then went to Illinois.  I have reports that he went west with a Daniel Cornell.  I am told that Daniel was the younger brother of Ezra Cornell.  If anyone could fill the gap between 1818 and 1850 for me, I would be most grateful.

Thomas BUCK, d. abt 1822, resident of Big Flats. His wife, Deborah remarried someone named McConnell or McDonald. His children included Eliza, Smith, Lockwood, Silas, Thomas, Harriet, and  Jerome.
His executors included Asahel BUCK of Chemung, Eleazer Owen of Chemung, and Charles Fry of Big Flats.
Does anyone have information on this individual and his family? I've been researching my BALDWINs and keep running across the BUCK family. Not seen
anything on the site about this family, but am hoping perhaps someone is out there researching and not had time to contribute info. Thanks in advance for
any assistance,

I am looking for information about the ROWE family who lived in Town of Veteran or Catlin - in or near Millport -  and their descendants.  Earliest
info I have is from the 1860 census, which shows Harmon C. ROWE, age 50, with his two children Abram ROWE, age 13 and Sarah ROWE, age 18.  They were all born in NY.  Harmon was married to Helen COLEPAUGH, although she is not listed on the 1860 census.  Does anyone know where this family lived in 1850?  Abram married Catherine Charlotte BARBER and settled in Millport.  I don't know what happened to Sarah.  My grandfather was Abram's son, (Josiah) Asa ROWE.  I will be pleased to share the info I have about the family.

Seeking death date and parents of great great grandmother.  1855 NY state census lists her as C. M. BUCK, born c 1834 in Cayuga County NY.  Her oldest son, George Llewellyn "Jake" Buck was born 1853 so I estimate her marriage date as 1851-2.  Public record for second son, Parmer (Palmer) Ensign (Eugene) Buck, born 13 Feb 1855, indicates he lived in Elmira for 4 years.  By 1860 the husband, Sylvanus Buck (1829-1904) was remarried and living in Michigan with new wife and oldest child.  Thus my guess that she died somewhere between 1855 and 1859, giving Sylvanus time to move to Ohio, marry, and move to Michigan.

My grandmother said her name was Hannah Jane AMMICH (AUMACK, OMIC).  The census record indicates she was C. M, (or perhaps H. M.-haven't seen this census myself).  On 3 of Parmer's marriage records she is called Mariah Omic, Maria Omic, and Almira Omic.

So I am looking for a death record, cemetery transcription (or lookup-thanks!) for a Hannah Jane Buck, H. M. Buck, C. M. Buck, Maria(h) or Almira Buck between 1855-1860.  Any help gratefully accepted!  Thanks.
