My name is Elias Castle, living in Cedar Hills, Utah. I have been searching for many years for records of my gg grandfather. His son, Nelson A. Van Gorder [my grandfather,of course] married Julia Ann Longenecker and raised their children in Miami County, Ohio. Nelson died in 1864 while with the U.S. Army, in Beverly, West Virginia. I would appreciate any and all assistance in helping me to find the father and mother of Nelson. I saw the abundance of Van Gorders in the Tri-County area of Chemung County, so thought that might be a good place to start searching.
A heartfelt thanks to anyone who can help me find my progenitor.

I am descended from Jesse R. ODELL, who was born abt 1808/1812 in Orange Co., NY. and died 23 Sep 1875 Fenton, Genesee Co., Michigan. His death record gives his father as Abram ODELL. Jesse was in Michigan prior to 1840. A number of ODELLs from the tri-county area settled in Genesee Co., MI, about the same time. Many of these ODELLs were children of Peter ODELL from Bradford Co, PA. There was a William ODELL in Chemung Co.at that time, who was born in Orange Co., NY about 1793 and whose father was Abram ODELL. Does anyone have information about the Chemung ODELL family or about Jesse R. ODELL.

Hi Joyce,
First, let me commend you on the excellent research and work you have done
for the website. It truly is one of the finest I have seen.
Secondly, the reason I write to you is that I am in the process of researching
my ancestry and, seem to be hitting a road-block when it comes to my
Great-Great Grandfather. His name is John Skinner and, he was born in Harwell,
Berkshire, England in 1817. Sometime around 1858, he and his second wife
(Elizabeth) came to the United States and settled in Big Flats. I find the
family on Federal Census records in 1870 but, cannot find them on any of the
census records you have on your website (1860, 1880). Nor, can I find the
burial place of John or Elizabeth. In 1870, according to the census records I
have, they lived in Big Flats and he is listed as a farmer, she as the
housemaker, and they had 4 children living at home with them. I would like to
find where they may be buried as, since I live in NY state, I would like to
visit the gravesite and hope to one day actually write a book about my family.
In 1870, John was 53 yrs old and Elizabeth was 45. Their children were:
Charles (age 16), Isabel (age 13), Joseph (age 11) and Frederick (age 9).
Any assistance you could give me would be tremendously appreciated!!!!
I thank you in advance for your time.
Sincerely,
Steve Skinner

Joyce:
I wanted to drop you a quick note for two reasons:
First, I wanted to thank you for setting-up and managing the tri county website. I have referenced your site countless times over the past years and I have found a lot of useful information regarding my ancestors (they lived in Elmira). I am not sure how often people think to drop you a message expressing their thanks... but I feel I owe it to you...
Second, if it is not too much to ask, I was wondering if I could ask a favor. I am looking for confirmation of a marriage (and any mention of relatives). The date I have is January 5, 1867 between George L. Davis and Georgiana E. Cook. I have been monitoring the "Chemung County Newspaper Extracts" section, hoping to find mention of their nuptials when "Part Six - Elmira Weekly Advertiser" is uploaded. As you can see from the date above, if it is correct and was reported upon, it would have been mentioned within the first couple of weeks of that year. I normally wouldn't ask to have you look something like this up for me, but I am trying to deliver a genealogy report to my family for the holidays.
Anyway, if my request is not appropriate, you don't have the time, or the information is not handy, I completely understand, and promise not to bother you again.....
Thanks again for keeping the site up and running, and for all the hard work you
have put into it...

Hi Joyce,
I am with the Public Archaeology Facility at Binghamton University. I
recently directed an archaeological examination of the Widow Smith
site located on NYS 427 in Ashland. Our group does numerous projects
in Chemung County and have found the web site invaluable. As part of
the final report we conduct a Census and Deed check as part of the
site history. I am looking for the names, birth, and death of
Elizabeth (Smith) Satterly, b. ~1773. She was a daughter of Timothy
Smith and was married to Dr. Elias Satterly. I believe one of the
children's names was Susan (Satterly)Strong, m. James C Strong. They
have one child named Elizabeth S. Strong. I am trying to account for
Elizabeth (Smith) Satterly during the 1840 Census and believe she may
reside under the name of one of her other children.
Any ideas? Many thanks in advance for your time and assistance.
All the best,
Brian

Dear Joyce
My name is David Morrison. I grew up near Madison, Wisconsin. My Mother was
Blanche Bennett. Our family genealogy and history states that my Great, Great
Grandfather Telman Bennett migrated from Chemung Co. via the Erie Canal and
Great Lakes to Columbia Co. Wisconsin. Telman was the Great Grandson of Abraham
Bennett. Our information says that Abraham Bennett was a Captain in Col. John
Hathorn’s 4th Orange Co. Militia during the Revolutionary War. His son, Abraham,
was a private in his father’s company.
I have surveyed your website, but cannot find anything substantial regarding these ancestors of mine. ( By the way, your website is fantastic!!!)
This branch of the Bennett family can be traced back to one James Bennett who settled in Concord, Mass. in 1639. Through the generations they migrated from Mass. To Conn. To New York.
Do you have any suggestions for my search?

Hello Joyce, My name is Debra (BLY) Tordoff, and I currently live near Jamestown, New York. I am originally from Elmira, NY ( I lived on Maple Avenue, and my parents built and operated the Maple Lawn Dairy Bar several years ago)anyways, a friend of ours is visiting and mentioned that she was looking for information about her grandfather that was murdered in Elmira, near the Remington Rand in either 1923, 0r 1924. He is buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira. I tried to find information, b\ut was unsuccessful. His name was George Andrews. I may not be using the site correctly. If you have any information on this please let me know. (ps I was very excited to read my great-grandmother's obituary on your site. I really did not know anything about her until I read the article. Her name was Mrs. Jacob Miller. I was wondering how to find out what her first name was.)
Thank you so much for your great web-site. Sincerely, Debra K Tordoff
I have two pages from the December 15, 1929 issue of The Sunday Telegram (Elmira, NY). In addition to a local bank advertising a 4% interest rate mere months after the stock market fell, on page 12 there is a large ad for SPAULDING'S Bakery. It seems that the bakery had placed a large sign in the middle of the Chemung River. Does anyone know who owned that bakery at that time?

Joyce, I am interested in info on a burial in the Woodlawn Cemetery I am having trouble trying to figure out how to submit a query? My name is EDWARD MILLARD and I have been doing Genealogy just starting my seventh month and I have an Arthur James Millard born March 31, 1894 and there was a grave for a Arthur J. Millard posted for the Woodlawn Cemetery, my Arthur James Millard's parents were George H. Millard and Kate Howell, son of Henry Millard born Sept 25, 1824 and died Mar 11, 1877. If you can assist me or contact someone that might have information on Arthur J. Millard, buried in Woodlawn I would really be thankful. I don't have a car where I can get out so I am pretty much at the mercy of a computer to do most of my research.
Thank You Very Much and let me say what a great job you have done for the Tri-Counti Area. I have one e-mail exclusive for my Genealogy Research so you can e-mail me at gravedigger5@myway.com or edward_millard2000@yahoo.com or little1dove@hotmail.com which ever is most convient. Have a superday.
Hi Joyce,
My name is Barbara Middleton and I now live in Omaha, NE. I have been
recently trying to do some family research for my grandmother. She knows nothing
about her family and I would love to find out something for her, she is 82.
What we know is that her father lived in Horseheads, according to the 1920 &
1930 census. His name is Frank YERKES. He lived with his son Max YERKES and
his wife Martha in 1930. Does the YERKES name sound familiar to you. We have
no idea where they came from or where they went after that. Frank had a daughter,
Elizabeth Beatrice. That is my great grandmother. She told all of her family
that she was French and her last name we Vallou (sp?). We know that isn't true.
She married Charles MILLER, we think he was born in the Rochester area.
I really don't know where to start. Hopefully you might have some information.
I am a member of Ancestry.com and there is nothing there, but the census records.
My family currently lives in the Genesee County area.
Thank you, Barbara
Looking for information on death of either a James or a William BROWN, who was reportedly hit by a bus in Elmira in 1939. Parents were John and Jessie BROWN. Any info appreciated.
sheilam Peckham
sheilap50@yahoo.com
note: previous query has outdated e-mail address
In reference to previous query, the BROWN killed in the bus accident may have been recorded as David James BROWN--my elderly aunt is not exactly sure which name he went by or if it was David James or his brother William who was hit by the bus. If someone could please check Elmira newspapers for 1939, I would really appreciate it.
