Does anyone out there know if Henry Dent was an early land speculator in Tioga County. He seems to appear quite often in deeds, but doesn't seem to have lived there. In fact the last deed I transcribed had his residence as Potter County.

My husband's gg-grandfather Wesley H STRALEY, b. 5 Oct 1846, probably Lycoming County. His son was Ira Straley who married Teresa ASHLEY. They lived in Trout Run, Lycoming County, PA.
My Internet research found a large number of ASHLEYs in neighboring Tioga county. Can you help me connect the dots? Perhaps you know where I might look.
Thanks you,

Dear Joyce,
First off let me thank you for the marvelous work you
have done on the Tri-Counties Web Site. I can't imagine how many
hours you have spent collecting information and posting it. What
a gold mine of information. After many hours of searching I
could not find everything I wanted and so thought I'd drop you a line regarding
my ancestor from Tioga County. I have the following information and
wonder if you can provide anymore:
1830 Census Rutland Township lists the following households
in order:
William H. Ward
John G. Ward
Nason Nickels
By 1840 the family of Mason Nichols was living in Lenawee County, Michigan. He patented land in 1839 and the Michigan Census of 1850 shows the family living in Volinia, Michigan with the two oldest sons born in Penna. 1833 & 1839. The 1850 Michigan Census also shows that Mason and his wife Elizabeth were both born in Massachusetts about 1801 & 1803. The couple named their oldest son Warren Ward Nichols. The numbers of Ward and Nichols families in Mass around 1800 makes the task of tracking down parents pretty difficult. Using the age on the 1830 census the William Ward listed there was born between 1770-1780. My current theory is that William H. Ward is the father of Elizabeth Nichols and John G. Ward is most likely her brother. Can you shed any more light on this family.
Thanking you in advance for any help you can give and your
great efforts toward family history.

My gr grandfather, Levi Chubbuck, died in Wellsboro, Tioga Co. 18 March 1870 (born 1804). He is termed "Colonel" and someone told me that he had a GAR marker on his grave but he seems too old to me to have been in the Civil War. If anyone visits the cemetery, could he or she see if there really is a marker? Thank you, Alys (Chubbuck) Monod

Dear Joyce,
William Day Crockett who is mentioned
on the Green Free Library page was an ancestor of mine and I am wondering
if there is any more information regarding
him available. He wrote a couple of published books (ie Harmony
of the Books of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles, by William Day Crockett,A
Satchel Guide To Europe )and is said to have done a genealogy of the Crockett
family and researched it on his travels to Ireland.
William Day Crockett is listed in the Hamilton College, General Roll of 1814 - 1908 Clinton, Oneida County, NY. He was the son of John Boyd Crockett and Emily Baxter Robinson of Sterling, Cayuga Co., NY.
I am hoping you can direct me to more
information regarding him.
Thank you for your help. It is greatly
appreciated.

Hi Joyce,
Nice web site! In the course of my research, I have learned that my "Szalewski" ancestors lived in Blossburg for a time (abt. 1876).
Has anyone ever done any in-depth research on the Poles in Tioga County,
and if so, were the results ever published? Would you know from what part
of
Poland, the majority of the Poles (in Blossburg) came from? (My relatives
were "Kaszubes"....a sort of sub-culture in Poland with a distinct dialect.
These folks come from the area that is just southwest of Gdansk). Just
wondering if there wasn't some "chain-migration" occuring.....If so, I
may
have more connections to Blossburg.
I thank you for your time.

Hello Joyce:
Nice Website! You sure have a lot of information here! My ancestors were the John Sheffer family who came up from Lancaster, PA and the Nicholas Elter (you have him as Elder) family. The daughter of John Sheffer (Julia Ann) married Nicholas Elter and from there came Sarah and her twin brother William. Anyway, Sarah is my gg grandmother. I would treasure any information you might have and will give you what I have. The Elter's (some) ended up in Iowa. I am interested in John Sheffer's wife Susanna Rennels, do you have any info?
Thanks! Write me at m4475@epix.net.

Hi Joyce,
I have been researching the Clark name and it seems like
every web site I go to I see your name. You have so much information
on your pages.
The Clark family I have been looking for is Hiram Clark married to Minerva. This is my husband's gggrandfather.
I just read the Baker Bible Records and the Clark names are similar to the ones in my husband's family. His grandfathers name was Leon and his middle name is Leon. He has a cousin named Gordon. Is there a way I could contact the person with this bible? Or could you have someone contact me?
Thank you for your time and the great pages of information you have on these counties.

I am interested in making contact with
anyone who is researching the SPENCER or SIMPKINS families of Tioga and
Bradford Counties. Siblings Polly Spencer Sellard and Jewett Spencer
both came to the area in the early 1800's (Jewett
in 1822) from Lyme, New London Co., CT. Jewett settled in Union
Twp, Tioga Co., Polly in Bradford Co. A little later, Charles O.
Spencer and Celia M. Spencer also came to the area from Connecticut.
Charles lived very near Jewett and I believe they were probably related,
my suspicion is that Charles is the son of Jewett's half brother.
Anyway, Charles marries Joanna SIMPKINS and Celia marries George W. SIMPKINS
(George was born in Canton, Bradford Co). Around 1850, George and
Celia Simpkins moved to Boone Co., IL (along with Richard SIMPKINS who
is probably a brother to George and Joanna).
Here's what I would like to know:
How are Charles O. and Celia M. Spencer
related to the other Spencers in the area? Who are their parents?
How are the Simpkins in the area related and who are their parents?
If you know anything at all about these families, please contact me.

I am interested in obtaining copies of probate records relating to James Sloan, d. 1831, and his wife Rachel, d.1828. They are buried in Weare Cemetery, Southport, NY. I believe this is the James Sloan who represented New Jersey in Congress 1803 to 1809. His niece Ann Sloan married my gggg-grandfather Anthony Bendler. I have written the Tioga County Surrogate about probate records. As I understand it, Chemung County was not formed from Tioga County until 1836. I may have the maiden name of Sloan's wife Rachel in notes from my research in New Jersey. Sloan was a Jeffersonian Democrat, and made quite a few waves in NJ politics around the time of his service in Congress. I'd be happy to exchange information: my NJ data for anything you may have on him or his family in NY.

No mention of my Great grandmother, Emily Garfield since she probably wasn't born until after the census that year. Tioga County doesn't have birth records available back that far. Not sure what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Joyce
I can understand why you have won awards for your genealogy
site-it is great and must take a lot of time to keep it so. I am
at a loss about my ancestors. I just received an obituary of my ggrandfather
from the Blair Co. Historical society. Imagine my surprise when I
discovered that he came from Ireland with his family as a small child.
The obit states "John J Kelly, son of Michael KELLY of Tioga Co.emigrated
from Ireland as a small boy. Surviving is a brother,Thomas of Blossburgh,Pa".
My great-grandfather John J. KELLY died as a result of a blasting accident
in Eldorado Quarry in Blair Co. Pa in 1907. I had no idea that his parents
also came to Pa, so Tioga Co . is a new clue for me. What would be
the most efficient way of discovering the where abouts of Michael KELLY,
his wife Ann(Or Mary), and known children names-John,Michael, Thomas, Mary
and probably a few others that I am unaware of? They were Roman Catholic.
I have no idea where Michael and his wife Ann (Mary according to some records)
were buried. Is there a Catholic cemetery in Tioga Co and what was
the name of any Catholic churches in the years between 1860 and 1900?
Thanks for any guidance in how to pursue this family. I am so
in hopes of discovering more about them and where in Ireland they came
from. I live in Va. and am unable to come and do any research myself
at this time.

Hello my name is Brad Shelp.I've

Shelp was my 3rd grandfather.I would be interested in additional information.Any

I recently found an article on Elkland Tannery and Elkland Roller Mills. I believe that my great grandfather, Edward Gaynor worked in the tannery, and his brother or uncle Napoleon Gaynor worked at the Roller Mills. Is there a way to get the list of persons that worked at the establishments? Also, what is a roller mill?

I really love the work you have done on the tri-counties sites and history pages.. I have gained much information from your pages. but have run up against a wall in my search. I hope you will be able to give me some guidance as to where to go for more information in my search. I am looking for information on my grandfather, Vernon Charles Broughton. He was the son of George and Irene (Wood) Broughton. I was always told that he was born in Academy Corners , Tioga county Pa.. in 1900 + or - a year. I am looking for his birth date as even my aunt doesn't know it, his daughter. He died as a result of mustard gas in WWI when my aunt was just a baby. My grandmother would not talk to my mother or aunt about my grandfather as it was too painful for her. If you can give me guidance to this information I would be truly grateful.
Sincerely.

I am looking for information on Benjamin Taber LAMBERSON and Eva G. GOODSPEED. Benjamin owned a mill in the Covington area around his second marriage to Eva GOODSPEED. I would like to find how to find information on where this may have been located. I have been unable to find Benjamin and Eva LAMBERSON in any of the census data from 1870-1890. In 1890 the family moved to Wyoming where I have a lot of information. Any information would be appreciated.

Mary Marriott was born in 1848, in Elkland, PA. She married Daniel McBride about 1870 and lived in Elmira and Towanda. I want to know the names of Mary Marriott's parents.
I know from an old genealogy that Mary Marriott was descended from Charity Mosher and Jonathon Marriott, who were Quakers, married in Duchess County, New York in 1797. We have always assumed that one of Charity and Jonathon's sons was Mary Marriott's father; they were Thomas, Henry, William and John Marriott.
Thank you.

Joyce, I have been reviewing your material on the Tri-Counties. One of the pages is for the Mansfield Orphan's School 1880. In it, there are the names of three Towner children, Benjamin, Jane, and William. Their ages correspond with three children of Franklin Towner and Esther Mitchell. However, my records show that Franklin died in 1920 and Esther in 1925. You can see my data at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~towner2001
Can you provide any additional info on these orphaned children?
Thanks
Larry Towner
