Hello
My name is John Morris! I am looking for any information that can
be had about my family.I know that my grandfather and grandmother came from
the lycoming/tioga county area.I just recieved their death records from the
state They state that grandfather came from Salladsburg, and grandmother came
from Tarport Pa..They could have moved to the Clarion county area at some time
later because my father was born in Bradysbend Pa. I am quite sure that my great
grandfathers name was George andgrandmothers name was Delphine. My father was
orphaned in the flu epidemic in 1918 and 1919 .My grandparents must have moved
to the Albion Pa. area in the early 1900s.Because that is where my father was
orphaned in the flu epidemic of 1918 and 1919.from there on the history is quite
vaque. The family of two boys and two girls were seperated and they went in
different directions. My father did not find where his parents were buried until
1954.He had been driving past their grave for years and didn`t know it. We come
to theAlbion Area for the summer from Fl. and I would like to come to Morris to
see if I can find any more information to add to my family history.
Thank you, John Morris

In 1860, my great grandfather, James N. GREEN married Eleanor REED. At the time of marriage, James N. GREEN lived and farmed in Great Bend. PA.
The only info we have on Eleanor REED is that she was born in “Richmond.” We have exhausted Richmond, VA to no avail. I am now tracing the possibility that Eleanor Reed was from Richmond Township, Tioga County, PA.
We place her date of birth as 1838 . Father’s name possibly Nathaniel REED.
Please advise if this is sufficient info. Thanks in advance.

Hi Joyce, I have seen two sources that state that Mary Burr of Tioga County was a cousin of Aaron Burr the Vice-President. Since Mary was born in 1832 and Aaron Burr was born in 1756 it is obvious that they were not first cousins. Do you know how they were related? This is a mystery we have been trying to solve for many years.
Thanks for your help, Alan Moore.

Dear Joyce: What at wonderful site. It is so much fun searching for relatives from so many years ago. It is great to see the pictures of the area. Keep up the great work.
STEPHEN A THOMPSON is back 5th generation for me. I can find him as dwelling #116, family #120 in the 1860 Census for Middlebury Township. They are also listed in 1840 and 1850 census for the same place. In 1870 I find them here in Wisconsin. STEPHEN A. THOMPSON was born in 1806 in the state of New York. I find a family of JOHN THOMPSON in New York state who has a son STEPHEN A. THOMPSON born 1806. How can I connect these two families? The First Presbyterian Church in Cherry Valley, Otsego, NY. list most of this family as joining the church in 1812 - 1820. I am pretty sure I have the right family but would like to have something more reliable. Can anyone give me more direction. Thank You.

I am looking for information on the family of Stephen Odle/Odell. Stephen was
born in 1814 in Vermont and his wife, Amanda, was born in 1819 in Rhode Island.
I do not know where they were married. They had a total of 10 children, many of
whom remained in the Tri County Area. They appear in US Census records for
Farmington, Tioga Co., PA from 1850 through 1900. In 1900 Stephen was 86 years
old and they had been married for 58 years! They probably arrived during the
1840’s and eventually settled in an area in Farmington Township that became known
as “Odle’s Corners”. Stephen and Amanda were members of the East Deerfield Free
Baptist Church or “Butler’s Church” and some family members are buried in the
Butler Hill Cemetery. I am specifically looking for the names of Stephen’s parents
and the name of the town in Vermont where he came from. I am also curious about the
history of Odle’s Corners. Any information on this family is greatly appreciated.

I am inquiring on the 'Whitney' name in Tioga County. I have been told by my aunt (Mary Ella 'Whitney') that my grandfathers (Earl Wayne Whitney from Pennsylvania) family in the US orginated in Tioga County. She gave me the name Elmira and Ella. I am not certain if the name Elmira is a town or a person. My aunt is quite old.
My grandfather (Earl Wayne Whitney) born in 1883 in PA, graduated for Bucknell University in 1906 then moved to Oklahoma taking a teaching position BEFORE Oklahoma became a state. He then went on to become an atty and became an oil and gas man in Oklahoma until his death in Tulsa in 1956.

My grandmother, Julie A OBrien, was born to John OBrien and his wife Mary
Bambury in Covington (Blossburg) Pa on
September 20, 1884. Both John OBrien and Mary Bambury were born in Ireland around
the early 1850's and came to this
country as children with their parents. They settled in the tri-county area.
I believe the OBrien annd Bambury families
you have within your information are related to my grandmother. While she lived
on a farm in Pa during her early youth,
she later lived in Elmira with a related OShea family. She married in Pittsburg
October 15, 1912 to Robert Otto.
Can you connect John OBrien, Mary Bambury, or Julie OBrien with anyone within the
data on your site?

Dear Joyce, We are researching the Burrell family line, of Chatham County! I am curious about the family in the picture. Our line descends from Nathan Burrell and Harriet Cole, great granddaughter of Asa Cole. They had children: Washington, Sylvester, James, Curtis, Smith, Catherine, Andrew, John and Harriet E. Would the James Burrell family possibly be related to this family? We also have heard that the Burrell's had an Indian background - do you know anything about this?

The recent passing of my mother, Rachel Agnes BAILEY Fredericks (1913-2004), resulted in my discovery of documents and photographs from which I am attempting to reconstruct a family history. On her father's side of the family I have been able to trace back to John Wilson BAILEY, born in England, and Margaret Lewis, born in Wales, who settled in Wellsboro Township, Tioga County, PA. I would appreciate any assistance in further developing the following family information:
Although my primary interest is John Wilson BAILEY of Wellsboro Township, and his son Lloyd John BAILEY (1860 - 1918), his other children included Frederick M. BAILEY, Denver, CO; Leon O. BAILEY, New York; Louis Llewellen BAILEY (1849 - 1920), Charleston Twnshp, Tioga, PA; Mrs. M.L. BACON of Wellsboro; Mrs. Midred Liebisch of Leipzig, Germany; and Supreme Court Justice Mortimer F. BAILEY (geographic locale unknown).
From the information I have garnered, the Mrs. M.L. BACON listed in the L.L. BAILEY obit may be the same as Edith BAILEY MACIUS, although I have no way of knowing for sure. In the will of John W. BAILEY there is a bequethal to "...my grandsons Roderick MACIUS and Morton MACIUS, sons of my daughter Edith..." Since the information I have indicates that John Wilson BAILEY had five (5) sons (Llewellyn L., Frederick M., Leon O., Lloyd J., and Mortimer) and two daughters (Mildred L. and Edith); and Mildred is reflected as living in Leipzig, Germany, I can only assume at this point that perhaps BACON is a subsequent married name for Edith BAILEY MACIUS.
According to his obit., L. L."Wellie" BAILEY was born in Charleston Twnship, son of John W. BAILEY (England) and Margaret LEWIS (Wales), although an uncertified copy of John W. BAILEY's will indicated that he left a sum of money to his "beloved wife, Julia BAILEY..." Julia BAILEY and Llewellyn L. BAILEY were named as the executors of John Wilson BAILEY's will. I can only surmise that perhaps John Wilson BAILEY married Julia (maiden name unknown) BAILEY following the death of Margaret LEWIS BAILEY.
Lleweleyn L. "Wellie" BAILEY was apparently very active in the county. He was one of the six organizers and subsequently the President of Tioga County Savings & Trust Co. He is described as a leading member of the Babtist Church of Wellsboro; member of Ossea Lodge No. 317, F.&A.M., and of Tioga Lodge No. 230, I.O.O.F. (Past Nobel Grand).
Thanks for any help you may be able to provide; I hope the foregoing may also
provide you with some new information, as well.

In my grandmother's notes, she says that she and my grandfather went on their honeymoon trip to Knoxville, PA to visit his aunt Mrs. Earnest Schrader. This would have been in 1904 and their names were Charles and Genevieve Walton. I believe his aunt would have been a Grandstaff before her marriage and would have been a native of West Virginia. Any information on her would be welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
My name is Michael Hart. My great grandfather was Aaron SMITH. He was born in
Pennsylvania around 1864 (plus or minus a few years). I have been unable to
identify his parents but I have narrowed my search down to about 3 families over
the last few years.
Recently, I found a wealth of information on your website, including information about Asa SMITH. I found Asa SMITH in the Biographies of Tioga County Civil War Soldiers extracted by Jodi Roper. It shows that he and his wife Mary had four children. (He had two children from a previous marriage for a total of 6). One of them was Aaron SMITH born around 1861.
I found out through research that Asa died in 1899. Mary A. Smith died in 1926. According to the 1900 census, she had 6 children and 2 were living. William SMITH (her son) was living in the same household in 1900 (Wellsboro). In the 1920 census I found Mary living with her step daughter Mary. So it implies that William and Mary were the 2 of the 6 still living in 1900.
One reference on this site shows that an Aaron SMITH died February 16, 1893. Can anyone confirm that this Aaron SMITH is the son of Asa and Mary? If that was not the same Aaron SMITH, can anyone confirm when this Aaron SMITH died?
I have been stumped for over 2 years now. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me. Please let me know. Thank you!
I have been researching the Family of Reuben Cook for 30 years and I still don't have any info about his wife...probably she was Maria Turner, but alas, all is mostly speculation. Reuben and his sons David, Ivory and Oliver were in Orwell, VT...except Oliver who was warned out of Orwell in 1816 and settled in Bridport. I suspect parts of this family migrated to Tioga County, PA. Can you help me??? I have a good deal of data on the Cooks...Sincerely, Grafton H. Cook
I am looking for any information on a JOHN PHALEN in Tioga County, PA. The only
information I have was published in the The Advance-Journal in Camden, N.Y.,
Thursday, May 16, 1895. The article states:
"SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.
John Phalen, of Tioga, Pa., spent Sunday with his uncle, P. C. Phalen.
He was on his way to Montreal, Canada, where his mother resides."
John was the nephew of my g g grandfather Patrick Cahill Phalen who immigrated from County Killkenny, Ireland in 1844. John is the only known relative Patrick had in the US and this is the only reference I have of John.
I would very much appreciate any information on a PHALEN family living in
Tioga County in 1895 or about that time. The spelling of the name can vary
sometimes being: Phelan, Falen, or Faling.
Many thanks,
Don Chauncey

Thanks for what you are doing. My family, the Escotts, are from Wellsboro.
William and Ann Escott moved there in 1865 or so. They had 5 children, William
being the youngest. My grandfather was Thomas M. Escott.
Joseph and Rachel Bowen are the maternal side for my father's family. I don't know much about them. My grandmother was Ella Jane Bowen before she married Thomas Escott. They had three children (my father, Thomas Dewain; Dorotha; and Lucille.)
I would love to have you track down what is available on them. I am going to England and Wales in May and they are already planning to work with me to go to the church where William Escott and Ann Morgans Escott were married. I am quite excited!!
