I am looking for the marriage of Rev John BOWMAN and M. W. ROCKWELL about 1850. I am guessing it occurred in the Tri-counties area or somewhere in or near Onondaga Co., NY. Does anyone recognize this folks?

BOWMAN, Rev. John, b. abt 1820, maybe Herkimer Co. or Onondaga Co. NY, USA, md. to M. W. ROCKWELL. They are parents of Harriet R. BOWMAN, b. abt 1851, md. Andrew T. GILMORE, b. 15 May 1845, Fayetteville, Onondaga, NY, USA. Rev. John Bowman was Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, Onondaga, NY, and then Rector of the church in Wellsboro, Tioga, PA where he conducted the marriage ceremony of his dau. Harriet and Andrew T. GILMORE on 12 May 1870. In about 1885 Andrew and Harriet went to Aberdeen, SD were Harriet was to teach music. I am looking for info. on Harriet and her parents and the ROCKWELL connection. I don't know if this family is connected to the German BAUMANN families of the Mohawk Valley.

Thanks. Evalyn Demeaux, demeaux@yahoo.com.

From: jvcirish@adelphia.net (John Casey)
To: JoyceTice@aol.com

Dear Ms. Tice,
I want to thank you for all the work you have done. I am in the process of trying to locate information about my grandmother, Catherine, who died in 1938. According to family history she was born in Arnot in 1869 and moved to Philipsburg around 1890. Using your information on the 1880 census plus information from Philipsburg I believe I have found her. She is listed as a daughter of John(60) and Jane Finagan(30) on page 25, dwelling 202, family 202 of your information. What I found confusing is that there are two listings for daughters, age 12: Cattie and Cate. Since her name was Catherine either could be her, or could this be a duplication since we remember no family discussion of twins or two children this close together in age?

Family History also tells us her last name was Shevlin and the other younger Finagan siblings were half-brothers and sisters. Is Shevlin a common name in and around Arnot? Where would be the best place to look to try and solve this mystery?

I will appreciate any help you can provide me.

Sincerely,
John Casey

Hi Joyce,
I have been spending an enormous amount of time browsing the Tri-Counties site. It has been great! I have found some family information that has been helpful to me.

I was wondering if you could help me further? I found a mention of Edward Hall, who started a store in 1833 and the town was named Hall's Corners, later changed to Van Ettenville. My grandmother Hall told me a story, years ago that also mentioned this town in our family history and it was named after someone in the family. Do you know the best way for me to get more information in regard to that? Unfortunately, I live in Washington State, so I have to do most of my research on line or by mail/phone calls. I am happy to do as much as I can, but am not sure where to start.

Thanks very much! Tracey Johnston

Hi! Joyce,
I just had a friend give me your web site and realized I have been to your site once before to look up a name in a cemetery. I have been working on our genealogy and know your site will be helpful. For James King, I have him born March 28, 1765 in Providence, Rhode Island and died November 13, 1844. He married (1) Rhoba Howland, daughter of John Howland and Lois Eddy. She was born March 06, 1769 in Providence, Rhode Island, and died November 02, 1836 in Tioga Co. Pa. Children were; Prince, Allen, Sarah, Ozial. He married (2) wife Rebecca and they had a son Stephen. Maybe you have this information in another place but I noticed some information was missing from the Revolutionary War Soldiers.

Also, I have Asa Short was born Feb. 20, 1754 in Glocester Providence RI, Died 1824 in Tioga County. Married Olive Burrell Sept. 5, 1776. She was born 1755 Dudley Worcester Ma. died April 15, 1841 in Chatham Twp..

I have Asa as the son of John Short born 1725 in Killingly Ct Windham CO. married Zerviah Utter September 27, 1748 at the first Congregational Church, New London, Conn. they also had John Jr. born Sept. 29, 1751. I am not sure about

Maybe you already have this information, but thought I'd pass along in case you didn't. I will be checking out your site more often to see if I can gain more information to add to my family tree. My great-grandfather's were Ebenezer King, Curry (Dave) Short, George Roy Ackley, Thomas Van Order. I have recently been trying to find more on the Van Orders. Thanks so much

Dear Joyce,
I have been so impressed with your web pages and the information that you have accumulated. I work for the National Park Service at the Saratoga Battlefield and have been working on the geneologies of many of the local inhabitants as well as those who fought there. Therefore I really appreciate all your hard work and hope that I can contribute to your information as well as finding out more about the White family. My husband Blake and I have been attempting to do more research on his direct ancestor, ELISHA WHITE, and the family that settled Crooked Creek. Apparently it was named after the Holiday family and not named for the White family as Elisha could not read nor write (confirmed on one of the census records). Courtesy of your site I have been able to determine that indeed Elisha is amoung the men of the Connecticut Land Title Holders. The family, some of which still lives in Crooked Creek/Middlebury, has always heard that Conn. is where the family came from. Of course on some of the census records the place of birth is just listed as New England so I had not been able to confirn this. Of the Conn. men listed, aside from Elisha White, other relatives are Elisha White Jr., the Bardwells, Daniel Holiday, and the Mitchells. If you have a large family and stay in the area the families all intermarried.

Blake is descended through Elisha, Elisha Jr., Daniel, Albert (Civil War Vet. 11th Cavalry - name on monument in town; the family has the muster roll, photograph (looks just like Blake), pistol, sword, and letters written home), Bert, Clark, and Clake Robert. I have accumulated some deeds and wills pertaining to some of the family, one of the most interesting being that of Elisha and one of the Bingham Lots. A realtive compiled a scrapebook of newspaper clippings pertaining to the families and other interesting events from the late 1800's and this I would be happy to copy for you if you would like. I have been working on the list of Conn. men who fought in the Revolution and followed many of the names to the French and Indian War lists. In order to go futher in this research I need to learn more about Elisha White. The Glass Tax of 1798 lists Elisha as does the 1800 Tax List (farmer - 52 years old). Unfortunately I am unsure of his wife's name and some of the confusion comes from having three Elishas. There is an ACHSHA BARDWELL, wife of Elisha, buried in the Middlebury Union Cemetery - b. 1785, d. Dec. 14, 1843, age 58. In the Fairmont Cemetery, the is EASTER WHITE, consort of Elisha, d. 10-12-1847, age 45. Any information will be most appreciated.

Sincerely, Linda White

Dear Ms. Tice,
I,m seeking more info concrening an ancesstor of mine named Sheldon Beckwith. His father was Richard Beckwith and his Mothers name was Sarah Holbart(uncertain). He married a Betsy McHenry on or around Dec. 20,1827 in Southport, Tioga County, NY. She seems to have been born on 5/12/1801 and he seems to have been born 2/26/1804, they then moved to Michigan after the 1830 census. Sheldon's brother would appear to be Albert Alonzo Beckwith, your sheriff from 1838 to 1840. I am checking on another family members research and Richard Beckwith was born in 1776, in Conneticuit and moved to Southport/Elmira sometime between 1786 and 1816. The only refrences I can find on your web site to Richard was his death(?) "Letters of administration granted to A. A Beckwith and John Warren Jr. appointed special guardian to minor children of Richard Beckwith". The Family tree I'm working from lists that Richard Beckwith and Sarah Holbart (died 5/8/1836 and 7/11/1836 respectively) had sixteen children: Albert Alonzo--Richard R.--George--Saraha A.(married David Griswold)-- Deliia(married Gilbert Dean)--May--Clarissa (married E. Mathers)--Nancy Beckwith(married John Carpenter)--Sheldon--Elizabeth--Julia A.--Peter C. --Timothy--Zina Amanda--David--and Mary Beckwith's all. I need to know if this lineage is acurate. Is there any help you can give me. Another website would be very helpful. But anything you can tell me would help.

Your website is wonderful and the information I have gathered here is fantastic. I await your response anxiously. Thanks for all the pride that you have in your towns and lineage. Thanks for your help

Hi Joyce.
My name is Wendy Huntley. I've recently started researching my family history, and my search led me to your sites. Of all of the sites and resources I've seen, yours is by far the most incredible fountain of information I've found. I'm a mathematics teacher and a history buff - I love both trivia and solving puzzles. My family puzzle has several Tri-Counties pieces. My mother is Willadene B. (Roff) Liddick (b. 12/21/1920). Her father was Willard Curtis Roff (1887-1948). In 1930, he worked for the post office in Lawrenceville. He married Violet Fern Wilson (1899 - 1949, b. Nebraska) in Elmira, NY, on 4/24/1920. Willard was born in Pa and had a sister, Blanch M (1895) also b. Pa. The 1910 census shows them living with an uncle, William C. Mead, Mead's wife, Emma, and Mead's mother Mary M. , in Tioga Co. Here's where I'm missing pieces. I believe that William is Willard Mead, son of Benjamin F. Mead (1880 Lawrenceville Borough Census), and that William's (Willards) sister Adie may be my great-grandmother Adeline Gertrude Mead. She married a Horace Roff (no info) . Would you have any suggestions for me as to how I might be able to find further info? I've scoured your sites, and have found much of my info there. In any event, I really wanted to let you know how awesome I find your work. Thank you so much.

I have to drop you a line and let you know how tremendously wonderful the web site is. I have extracted so much information about the Lloyds and the Roupps and pictures and postcard pictures of Blossburg. Love it!! I was going through the cemeteries and noticed that there are people missing from the list that I expected to see there. I understand that the process isn't an exact science and information does get overlooked. Is there anyone you know that I could ask about the locations of some of the cemeteries? I was unsure where the Blossburg and Maple Hill ones were located. Nobody that I ask seems to know.

I also was hoping you could put out feelers for me. I have been searching for anyone from the Lutomski family. My grandmother was Mary Catherine Lutomski. She married Joseph Lloyd. I understand from stories that she was shunned by her family because she was Catholic and grandpa was Protestant. I know her family came from the area because there are Lutomski's buried in a cemetery in Morris Run. Could you give me any ideas where to look?

Thank you again for the great website and for your time.
Sincerely, Donna Lloyd Lougher

Hi all,
I have very little little information on my husband's great-grandfather's line. Here is what I know:

Nellie BUTTERS of Liberty PA (daughter of David BUTTERS and Lovina HART Butters) was born 5 Dec 1885 and married Leo Deloir AXTELL who was born 25 May 1885 in Bradford, PA. They lived in Galeton, Potter County, PA for a few years. I have lots of info on the BUTTERS and HART lines but zilch on the AXTELL line.

Supposedly, Leo's parents are William AXTELL, born 19 May 1857 (location unknown) and Anna EDDINGS born 1 Apr 1868 possibly in Blossburg, PA. He died on 3 Oct 1901 and was a police officer. I have very little info on the AXTELL family and anything you have would be appreciated. Supposedly William is the son of a Frank Baker AXTELL b. 1834 and Katherine INSCO Axtell. I am unable to substantiate this.

The only info I have on Anna EDDINGS is that her father's name is John EDDINGS and her mother's first name was Mary. Anna remarried after William died to an Albert CRANCE.

Any info you have on the AXTELL-EDDINGS families would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Wendy M. Salmon cabernet3163@yahoo.com

Joyce, you have done a remarkable job with your site. My husband has been able to locate several family members by availing himself of the information you have assembled. I am research my own family and have had great difficulty I back tracking my great grandfather, John Burrous. Believe I have found him in the Tioga Co. census of 1840 but the two older sons are missing. I have him from 1850 through 1880 in Potter Co., PA but need to find him in earlier years and also locate his parents. He was married to Sally York and I have his birth date so I know he was not the famous John Burrous who founded Montoursville and knew George Washington. It would be interesting if I could connect them but so far no luck.

I do know he settled in Wellsboro area for a short time before rafting up the Pine Creek to West Branch where he homesteaded. Just wondered if you remembered running across the Burrous name during your research and should I find anything which can be added to site I will certainly comply.

Thanking you in advance.
Sincerely,
Phyllis Marie (Burrous) Ferris

I am interested in descendants of Morgan ISAAC who came to Pa. about 1870 from Wales. Morgan was father to Catherine and Thomas (twins), William, Evan and John. Thomas settled eventually in Iowa and Evan probably went onto Saskatchewan, Canada.

Interested in ISAAC surname Arnot, Pa. about 1870. gisaac@netins.net

Joyce,
First, KUDO'S for a fantastic Web presentation for genealogist and historian!!!

I've been dead in the water for about nine months on a 4xgreat grandfather.....in fact an otherwise well preserved/handed down family history had forgotten him, crediting his issue to his father (same first name). Even published biographies of descends and genealogies missed him. I have much info now to get him his rightful place, but still desire vitals. Two days ago I happened on a new find....a history of Alllegheny County that stated Owen McCabe (the immigrant father) had settled near St. Clair (in Allegheny County) ca. 1804....also said he (Owen) was the father of Col. Robert McCabe who HAD SETTLED at Mansfield. (1). Is this your Manfield in Tioga County (why I was at your site)? (2.) My Robert McCabe was a private throughout much of the Revolution...Can you shed light on a COL. Robert McCabe pre-1804 Pa. .

NOTE: This Robert McCabe is the grandfather of Lorenzo Dow McCabe of Ohio Wesleyan U. who married Harriet Clark, daughter of Arvine Clark you have a biography about, on your site.

THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE for your reply of any kind to: juanitasmith13@sbcglobal.net pappy
