I was visiting your web site about Tri counties Geneolgy and was very surprised to see a picture of My Great Great Grandfather and Grandmother Cyrus and Caroline Cook. They are in a section called: Cook Family of Potterville. I have been doing alot of research on my family roots and was just so happy to see the picture. I also have a picture of Oliver and Avery Cook that was taken in Potterville in 1906. Can I ask if you have any other information on my family? Or could you point me in the direction of who submitted the picture? I would be Greatly appreciated. Not to be a bother but I am also researching my Moms family......Which have connections to the Dartt Settlement in Charleston PA. The last name is Smith. I have James E. Smith married Emily M. Dartt ( who's father was Justus M. Dartt and Mother was Clarinda). I have come across alot of both sides of my family ( Smith and Cook) who lived in PA. The Smiths were mostly Charleston TWP, Tioga PA. I don't know if you can help me or not......but I have been doing alot of research online and because of the early dates I have been hitting brick walls. But if you can't help then I understand. I am so pleased to see the picture you have.

I'm writing for my mother. Hope you can help. She is trying to find out when her parents were married. She doesn't have much info. She said they might have been married in Wellsboro, PA. or maybe Lawrenceville, PA. Then she said they might have been married at the "Rockwell Estate". Her Mom died when she was a baby and she was raised by her Aunt and Uncle. They lived in NY and PA state, on the state line somewhere. She was born in 1920, so I would guess they were married, maybe 1906-1910 or so, she had older brothers too. Anyway, her Dad's name was Robert Johnston Terwilleger and mother was Margaret Anna Mitchell. They also had three sons older then my mom, Ed, Ray and Carl.
Thanks for your help. If you don't have any answers maybe you have a
phone number she could call, or another website I could check out.

Joyce, I am trying to locate a family by the name of Phillips. Charles Jesse Phillips was born 1924 in Duncan, Pennsylvania. This is for genealogy purposes only. He may be still living, I am not sure. But, I am doing some research for his son who never knew his father. His father and mother divorced when he was about 3 and his mother has never told him anything about his father except that he was born in Duncan. It would mean a real Christmas present if I could find Charles on a census somewhere. I found one in Lycoming County, Hughesville in 1930 showing a son by the name of Charles 6 years old. But cannot find a Phillips in Tioga County, Duncan Township. I hope you can help. Thank you, Pat

Hello Joyce!
I've spent an entire afternoon enjoying your web site and want to say Thank-You! The enormous amount of work and time you have invested has helped my wife and I fill in many gaps in our family tree research!
We are from Warren, Pa. in Warren County. My Great-Grandmother was Eva Lee Kilbourne Aker, who was from Tioga County. Her/our ancestors carry the names of Kilbourne- (various spellings), Putman, Butler, and Short among others. We have been searching for months for the smallest details and your site has given many birth and death dates of our family members! The cemetery listings included in your web site are invaluable!
My Grandfather, Francis L. Aker, son of Eva Lee Kilbourne Aker, has traveled to Tioga County and done extensive genealogy research there! His work along with yours has gotten our personal genealogy research quite some distance!
If Becki and I can help with any of our Tioga County research on our ancestors please let us know! The information we have compiled may help others with their own genealogy!
Thanks, again!

One of my greatest genealogical challenges is understanding about my gggrandmother, Margaret BAHAN KANE. Here she is listed in the 1850 Census living in a household with a funny assortment of other individuals. Can anyone connect to these others? Margaret and "husband" Simon KANE reportedly left Co. Clare in May/June 1849. I NEVER find Simon and Margaret together again after the ships passenger list. Margaret remains with one/both of her children for many years thereafter. In 1860, she resides with sons Michael and John in Barton/Waverly, NY (Tioga County) and in 1870, she resides with son John and his wife in Waverly again. Meanwhile, Simon marries Mary CAHILL in Elmira, Chemung Co., NY in 1862. They are found in 1870 in Canton Boro, Bradford Co., PA in in Elmira thereafter. Obviously, something is amiss!

Hello Joyce
I have just started to trace my Brigden family history and was interested
to see the names in the Brigden family bible on your website. My great
grandfather was born in Dover, Kent, England. He married in Yorkshire and
by 1901 had moved to Burnley in Lancashire. My branch of the family then
moved to Blackpool, Lancashire, in the 1920s, where we now live.
Most Brigdens live in the south of England, where it seems likely that the name originated. There are not many Brigdens in Lancashire.
I would be very interested to know if you have any contacts with any Brigdens with possible connections to my family!
Best wishes
Alan Storey

Dear Joyce, My name is Alan Moore, I live in Cincinnati and I am a grandson of Willis and Alice Moore of Mansfield. I've been researching my "family tree" since last spring and your site has been a great source for me. I feel like I have scanned every word at least twice. So far I have found a lot on both sides of the family but still have a few holes, maybe you can help. On my grandfather's side the big question is about the "Champaign" family. Willis's mother was Minnie Champaign, her father was Pierre or "Peter" Champaign. The only information I have is from the 1880 Elk Township Census, it has the family name as "Champen". Would you happen to have anything else? The second question is on my grandmother's side. Her name was Alice Winters, her father was Edwin D. Winters. Edwin's father was said to be John Winters and his mother is believed to be Fannie Burr. Do you have anything on this? The 1900 Census has Fannie (Edwin's mother) living within Edwin's household and said both of her parents were from New Jersey. Do you have any idea who they might be? I sure hope you can help me or at least point me in the right direction.
Thanks for everything, have a Merry Christmas..........Alan.
Hi Joyce, This is Margie Lantz. I need some information regarding registrations of lawyers in Penna. I mean old registry's. Back into the 1900's. I am looking for information about a possible relative of my mother but have lost the track and need to know some more things about him. It would be between 1900 and 1930 when he was in practice but I can't find any sites regarding lawyer registration. Can you help? It would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Margie My e-mail address is Grandame@localnet.com
Joyce: My name is Arthur Schifflin. I live at 2259 Providence St. Falls Church Va. 22043. E-mail address bigarch@juno.com. I was doing a little research on my ancestors and came upon your site. Don't ask me how. Anyway, when I was a young kid, my father told me about a relative of his who he said named Tombstone Arizona. My grandmother had one of those old fashioned parlors which we were always forbidden to go into. On the mantle piece were these egg shaped things. I asked my father what they were and he said nuggets of silver that were sent from Arizona. Later he told me the story about Tombstone. I never thought much of it until many years later whenl I read one of those Savings Bond ads which mentioned Ed Schieffelin and Tombstone. At that time I thought about the old guy's stories. Too coincidental to have been fabricated. My father was a great reader who loved history, never having graduated from High School he was quite learned. So it is not unlikely that he read about this fellow and made up the story. Of course no one likes to think of their father as being a liar. My question is were his stories a lie, or was Ed Schieffelin really one of his relatives. The reasons I" m bothering you is that my father told me his grandmother came from Pennsylvania. Her name was either Schuman or Schulman. I think she is the key to my quest. So far I have been unable to tie up all the questions I have. I know it is unlikely that I will ever get to your beautiful Tioga to do personal research That is why I am bothering you to see if you know anything about Ed Schieffelin. His brother's name was Al, I believe.. Any help you can give me in my search would be greatly appreciated.. Thank you very much. Art Schifflin

Dear Joyce,
First off, GREAT JOB on your website! It is fantastic and alot of fun to read through!
I am searching for one of my ancestors and I am hoping that you might be able to point me in the right direction.
My great-aunt Amanda Marie Langeland Hartwig married a Harry O Walton, son of Eprian (sp?) Walton and Harriet Kemmer. Harry was born in 1897/1898 in what appears to be Marsh Creek Pennsylvania.
Harry later moved to Scranton and then went on to Fort Benton Montana where he married my great-aunt Amanda.
I am having a terrible time trying to find out information on Harry.
In 1897 it appears that there was only one Marsh Creek in PA, that being in Tioga County. But my trail runs cold and here is where you come in.
Can you shed some light on the Walton family of Marsh Creek PA (if indeed that was where they lived)?
ANY help you could give me would be most appreciated.
Sincerely,
Janet Yeager

Hi Joyce!
I wrote to you some time ago to let you know I was working on the Hastings
Family Tree. I went through the West Branch Cemetery listing and found
most of the relatives since the Wilcox, Townsends, Buckley's and a few
more in there are all related by marriage. I did, though, notice that my
great, great grandfather and my great aunt's listing isn't on there and
I know they are in the cemetery in the G-13 area where Charles and Anna
Hastings are buried because I used to take care of quite a number of the
plots when I was in PA. My grandparents are John and Rachel and I did the
Maskers too as my great aunt was Elva Masker, but the two missing in G13
are Charles L Hastings 1876-1921 and Martha Hastings (Im not sure her dates
but she is his daughter) The plots are located behind Lewis and Anna Hastings.
This is such an extensive family tree and I am stuck in 1772 in Smithville Flats NY with Stephen Sampson Hastings who married Sarah Squires. Her history is back to 1400 Scotland/England on one of the geneaology sites but it only mentions her being married to him. I know she was born in CT but I can't find anything about Stephen. I have managed to find a distant cousin whos relative is married to Stephen's daughter and he is researching too. He says he found that Stephen's father could be Richard as in 1847 in NY there is record where Richard and Lydia Hastings sold property to Stephen. I haven't found that yet or linked them.
I have about 9 more months in England and I am hoping to tie the ends to England so I can find where exactly here they are from so I can visit and take pics before I return to the states. My problem is I can't seem to find any sites online for Massachusett links as I am thinkin that's where I'll find the Hastings line and then to England. Sarah in CT Im still looking there. If you have any ideas, I'd be grateful to know. Thanks bunches.

Elizabeth was born about 1820, Jerusha born in 1828, Henry born in 1829 married a Jerusha, and Mary born in 1832. They were all listed in the Athens, PA census in 1850. I have some information on another brother, William, who also was in Athens in 1850. I have been unable to find further information on them. If you have any, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Hi Joyce:
Harry Gardiner in Winona, MN here.... how are you?
If you recall, a couple of years ago, I began searching for additional
information on a divorce decree for my grandfather and his wife: John Francis
and Ada L. Bernauer Francis that was granted on 5 December 1887. According
to the sheet I have it was: Divorce Index -- John Francis -- No. 150 April
Term 1887 at the Tioga County Court House in Wellsboro. Nothing more than
this could be found. I was wondering if any additional records had been
compiled which might contain information about this divorce?
Hope all is going well with you ...
My best,
Harry
Joyce,
Hi! Was browsing your website of Geneology for Tioga County. Am looking for a birth and death date for the above person. Would you be able to assist. She died in Williamsport, PA. She was born on or around 1897. She is buried in Oregon Hill Cemetary in Morris, PA. Unfortunately, this poor soul only has her first name on her tombstone. She would be my great aunt, my grandmother's (Grace English-Black-Root-Embick) sister, but I do not have very much information on her. My mother would like to buy her a proper tombstone.
Please let me know if you need further information.
Thanks.

Dear list, Does any one know where Black Walnut was. I have been told that it is either in Bradford or Sullivan County. My great grandmother was suppose to have been born there.
Thank you Carol Shedden rhsces1@juno.com
Hi Joyce:
First let me commend you on the information that you have posted for
Tioga County. I found it not only informative, but extremely helpful.
I have been looking for the children of a family member who went to live in PA with their uncle after their mother died. Nancy Smith Stevens had 9 children who were left pretty much on their own at her death in 1833. Her brother John Smith of Lawrenceville, PA. took at least four of her children and raised them. I was hoping to see the 1840 census on your site, but you apparently haven't had time to get it up there yet. When you do, could you please contact me?
I am trying to find where John Smith (the uncle) went. He was a cabinet maker. He trained his nephews in his trade and I found two of the boys Edmund and Smith Stevens were on the 1850 census. I also found on your site that Edmund and his wife Susan were interred in the Lawrenceville Cemetery. Couldn't find Smith and his wife on any of the listings. I didn't find their uncle anywhere on the census or cemetery listings. I would like to find a copy of his will and probate if possible - or something that would tell me the name of his parents. (I know wills don't usually do this, but if I have to take the long way around by following descendants who might have information this is what I will do.)
Do you happen to know anything more about Lawrenceville and it's citizens in the 1830's? I have a feeling John would be a pioneer of the area. Can you suggest other reading I might do regarding this or other sites?
Anyway, thanks so much for your help and a wonderful website!
Regards,
Sue Simonich
Looking for information on NAHUM (or NAHAM) SHELLEY. Time date approximately 1800 to 1850 and in Tioga County. Married to a Mohawk Indian woman named Kate, with four children; Lewis Naham, Truman, Daniel and Kate.

Dear Joyce,
I'm trying to trace my ancestral roots back to a specific town(county)
in Ireland. My great grand father was born in Ireland(place unknown in
1841) and emigrated to Pa. prior to 1867. His name was William F Clossey
and he married Bridget Kelly(Bridget's first husband, John Howard, died
around 1860-1865) probably around 1867 in a Roman Catholic Church, most
likely in Arnot or a closely surrounding area. My grandfather, Michael,
was born in May of 1869 and his brother, William F III in Nov. 1870. I
know William was born in Arnot, because I've unearthed newspaper articles
on him stating this fact. The family left Pa. for Jersey City around 1885.
My quest is to find a copy of their marriage certificate whose application should contain the names of their parents' and where, specifically, in Irealand they were born.
Can you help me? My "E" mail address is vjpc159@hotmail.com
Very Truly Yours,
Vincent Clossey
The missing mothers problem mentioned in the 9/24/2002 same subject has been solved. Thanks to the assistance of the Steuben County NY Historian's Office I can report the mother of Susan E HARROWER b. 15 April 1846 was Susan Harrower nee THURBER b. 1818 d 1846. She was the first wife of Gaberial T HARROWER. The mother of Elijah S HARROWER b. 25 Sept 1847 was Elizabeth Harrower nee THURBER b Jan 1818 d 9 May 1848. She was the second wife of Gabriel T HARROWER. The 3rd & 4th wife of Gaberial T HARROWER are as stated in the orginal post.
I'm still interested in finding out more about the only child (Gabriel T HARROWER JR) of the 3rd marriage whose mother was Antoinette Harrower nee KASSON. Also the children of the 4th wife Helen Harrower nee Parkhurst. Burial of Gabriel T, Helen and some of their children in Lawrenceville Tioga Co PA cemetery. Gabriel T SR, wife Helen and some children living Tioga Co PA by 1880. I have access to the Ambrose Kasson & John Parkhurst family histories written by Gabriel H Parkhurst (1897). Researching Kasson & Parkhurst since these families married into the male Hall families sired in the mid to late 1700s by Jabez HALL & Hannah Hall nee LYON of Lanesborough Berkshire Co MA .

Hello Joyce - just viewed your listings for above named census and I know I may be asking the impossible, but since you are also interested in CARR, I thought you might be able to help me.
Per the census JAMES CARR is listed on p 15, line 28 - however, every age category is blank! He is residing within doors of Nathaniel and Lewis KINNER. My James Carr married Elizabeth Kinner about 1801 Orange County, NY. I strongly believe that Elizabeth is either a sister of Nathaniel Kinner or Cousin. Per other records I have James and Elizabeth lived in PA from about 1823 until about 1837.
I am digressing....I wonder if there was a mistake in the transciption of the above James Carr on the 1830 census.....he should have at least 6 male children and 1 daughter....Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. K Carr
In 1974, my husband and I moved an 1849 house in pieces from Tioga, Pa. to Great Falls, Va. and reconstructed it. It was in the local Tioga Newspapers at that time. The newspaper printed the first owner of the property in Tioga as MILLER. Since I know my Great Grandmother was LYDIA LEWIS MILLER during that time, I am wondering if the wife of the Mr. Miller who had the house built, could be related to my great grandmother. Wouldn't that be a hoot?
I know the following. Lydia Lewis Miller shows on the 1850 and 1860 census with two children. Names: Albert and Emma. She later married Charles MATTHEWS (My Grandfather) Third marriage: James KING who is buried with her in the DAGGETT CEMETERY

Hello Joyce,
I knew I'd never find it in public record but 'someone' someplace had
the information on her exact birth date. I have it in my book, Decendants
of William Lain & Kaziah Mather also. I was 'hoping" ( know a high
hope) that someone might have some kind of documentation of her or know
if born in PA or NY as all census's say NY but all other references say
Daggett Mills or Daggett.. NY! (Of course there's no such place) lol .
I think I'll have to follow the lead more in Michigan as that's where she moved with her father.. but her and David moved back to the Tri-Counties area although I'll be darned I can find them for sure. Their children are all over the place there. You're right about all the nooks and crannies to the site. I seem to come across something else or another relative every time I go looking on it. Of interest, the Wells Twp. historian wrote me and said that yes, Daggett and Daggett Mills are two different places about a mile apart. That there's a historical marker for Daggett Mills about a mile from Daggett. He also mentioned that in many books and references they are usually lumped together as the same place. You have such a wonderful site. The people on this mailing list are great! It's the only list like this I've ever joined due to so many spam issues and to much e-mail. The users sure make the difference.
Thanks again for such a wonderful site and I hope to soon have more
personal letters and stories from the correspondence between my grandparents
and various relatives in the area from the 1950's-1970's. I need to get
my mother to photo copy them and send to me. They contain a wealth of information
about various people and different families in the area.
Take care,
Darla Stimbert

Re: MR. and MRS. WILLARD E. FRALIC
In my attempts to find information on my ancestors (The VANOVER'S of
Elmira, NY and The WHITCOMBS of Lambs Creek, PA), I have run across some
other names that are connected, somehow, to my relatives.
I have a copy of a newspaper article dated April 2, 1939, regarding the 44th wedding anniversary of MR. AND MRS. WILLARD E. FRALIC of Lambs Creek, PA.
Does anyone have any information on The FRALIC'S, The VANOVER'S or WHITCOMB'S?
Thank you,

Looking for Tom SALINA in Mansfield Pa in January 1925.
Thank you, Virginia Salina, tsalina1@comcast.net.
Hello, Joyce, I believe I contacted you previously but when one gets to 86 the mind is not as sharp. I am looking for a knowledgeable descendant of the Spencers & Sullards who might know something about the siblings of Jewett Spencer, Sr, and Polly (Spencer) Sellard who went WEST. The siblings are Ichabod, Charles and perhaps Oliver.

Hello,
I have been trying to research the surname Erway of Little Marsh, PA.
I am not having much luck. All I have right now is a newspaper clipping
from a Hornell newspaper that says my grandmother Allene Gardner married
Elwood Erway who is or was the son of Agnes Erway of Little Marsh, PA.
I never knew Elwood or Agnes Erway or anything about them. I do know that
my grandmother had my mother before she married Elwood and that they had
two children together I don't know very much about them because they disappeared
before any of us came along. I know it sounds strange but my grandmother
was not mentally stable she was in and out of mental hospitals most of
her life. During one of her spells,as they used to call them, she was hospitalized
and when she came out of the hospital my mother was with my great grandmother,
Elwood and the other two children where no were to be found. I don't know
if they returned to Little Marsh, PA or not I do know that Elwood died
in Niagara Falls, NY and I believe that the children where one female and
one male. We do not discuss much of these children because my grandmother
didn't like to and now my mother has followed in her footsteps. So we have
no information. Well I guess my question is if you would know anything
about Agnes Elwood and whatever came of her I have been looking at articles
in your WebPages but haven't been able to find anything as of yet. I would
appreciate any information you have. If you do, could you please contact
me at brewmm@hotmail.com or aim instant messenger maurbrew005.
Thank you for your time,
Sincerely,
Maureen Brewer
Hi Joyce. My daughter moved into a home in Little Marsh, Tioga Co., PA. She found a Bible, Yearbook for Cowanesque Valley High School 1971 and scrapbook for Thomas Paul DAVIS, in the attic. I would gladly send this collection to the family.
