Tri-County Lookup Volunteers
Bradford County PA
Chemung County NY
Tioga County PA
Request a Lookup - Remember that these people are volunteers and will appreciate it if you thank them for their time. Please don't ask them to do your work for you but just to check in the resources they have listed. Also, Please do not give the same request to more than one lookup volunteer at a time. Sometimes people have kept the whole crew busy working on the same redundant request. Be considerate of these volunteer helpers and keep your requests to a reasonable level. ALWAYS thank them and NEVER criticize them.

All lookups should also be accompanied by a query to be posted on the query page

Please list the surnames you are searching on the  query page so that others can contact you. Frequently we find that the lookup volunteers have "reinvented the wheel" doing research that others have done already.

Also, PLEASE do NOT ask these people to look up materials that are already on the site. It is assumed that you have already thoroughly reserached the materials on the site before asking for anything more. This is a bonus for use ONLY after other resources are exhausted. .

Joyce........ I would like to volunteer to do look-ups on the 161st New York Volunteer Infantry that was formed in Elmira in November of 1862 and included many men from your area. I have a copy of John W. Merwin's Monograph and Roster of the regiment and I have done quite a bit of research on the unit myself.   Rich MacAlpine   Penn Yan NY                    use this email address

Rose Matthews - I have access to every US census record for every state for every year at my public library.  I do NOT have access to state census records.  I am willing to do look ups for everyone but need a four week look up time due to the high rate of requests that I get.  I volunteer for about 5 lists including one from Wales.  They are at the Orlando Public Library and I only go every other week.  I will do look ups only when the county is specified.  I prefer the township, too, but sometimes that can't be helped....and the benefits I have reaped while looking for someone elses stuff is unbelievable!!! RoseVanMat@aol.com

Pat MOTT Gobea has the Funeral Home Records for Vickery Funeral Home in Troy and also Morse-Kluse Funeral Home. She will do lookups for you.

I am involved in doing look-ups at Andersonville Prison. I visit the Civil War site about twice a month to do research for anyone who ask. My research is free to anyone who ask. I have access to the online database as well as a CD that has the complete roster of prisoners on file who passed through the gates of Andersonville. The CD helps, as I can check alternate spellings and I have found several prisoners using this method. This started as a favor for someone and has turned into a hobby/obsession. I also will take pictures as requested for a small fee. I have become very familiar with the cemetery layout and can find any grave on record and take pictures for decendants. Of the 13,000 buried there, only 460 are unknown so the records were very well kept . Please let me know if this notice can be posted on your site or web page.  There is a small fee for the photographs. Thank you.

Cindy Turner - Will do lookups with following:  History of Tioga County, 1897; Old Deerfield The First 150 Memorable Years; Centennial History of Tioga Co., Pennsylvania (Glover); William Knox of Blandford, Massachusetts published 11/1926 by Nathanial Foote ( a genealogy of the Knox family); Knoxville PA records from Seeley business ledgers (circa 1850) etc. as well as family records.cat@montana.net (Cindy Turner)

Tim Traver- I have noticed there is continuing interest with the 141st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on the list. I have the book "The Regimental History of the 141st PVI", written by Rev. David Craft. It has a list of the soldiers who served in the 141st in the back, they are listed by individual companies. If there is any mention of the individual soldier by name in the text of the book, then a page number was placed next to their name in the company list so that one could go directly to that page and read about the soldier. I would be willing to serve as a look up person for those wishing to search for relatives who served in the 141st PVI. I have my name listed on many Civil War sites on the internet as a look-up person for the Regiment and I'd be happy to do it for those on the list as well.

Gerald Cahill- If you can find some way to place this on the Bradford County GenWeb page, I have a copy of "History of Bradford County with Biographical Selections" by H. C. Bradsby published in 1891. I will do lookups for those searching in Bradford County. Gerald F. Cahill Cahillgf@aol.com[Note most of this is already on the site]

Virginia Peterson - Several years ago I worked on a project of typing and indexing 200 unpublished family group sheets on the Tubbs family, collected in the 1880's by the famous Charles Tubbs of Tioga Co. The originals are owned by the Tioga Co. Hist. Soc. On my web page I have a list of the head of family names, and I'm willing to look up information if anyone is interested. The information comes from all over the NE US and westward, and includes some families of Tioga PA, Chemung NY, Steuben, etc. The information was of great help to me, so I want to try to spread it around. We have the following publications from the Seeley Genealogical Society. 1. DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT SEELEY (1602-1677) and OBADIAH SEELEY (1614-1657): Generations One Through Five, 1997 Edition. Richard JACKSON - Joyce: I can do look-ups for Tioga County, New York. I have access to the US censuses and whatever literature there is in the Houston genealogical library. I have been doing look-ups for the past few months for those who have had queries about Tioga County/Chemung County. I was born in Elmira (Arnot-Ogden) and grew-up in Waverly, so I am quite familiar with the area. I manage to get back there once a year. ajackson@onramp.net (Richard J. Jackson)

Sharron Bronson Vossoughi - My special interest is Irish that came from Liscannor Parish in County Clare and settled in the Chemung County area.  A by-product of my research is a burial list of Irish Catholics buried in Chemung Co.  Most are buried in SS Peter & Paul's Cemetery in Elmira and St. Mary Our Mother Cemetery in Horseheads although some are buried in other places. There are about 30,000 names mentioned in the database with some biographical information in many cases.  I am happy to copy and paste from this database for anyone interested.  My E-mail address is Rsvossoughi@worldnet.att.net.

I have also been compiling a second database of folks from Liscannor Parish in County Clare, Ireland who settled or passed through Chemung Co.  I am happy to share information from this much smaller database.

At some time I hope to publish the burial list but at this time I am happy to share it with other researchers.  Burials in SS Peter and Paul's own records is very uneven before 1890 but we have used Elmira Death Records, obituaries from Elmira newspapers, probate information, Elmira City Directories, other researchers' personal records and tombstone inscriptions to fill in.  The list is solid for1890 to 1910 and spotty for years after 1910.

And finally, thank you Joyce for your steadfastness to the list and the wonderful information you have made available.  It has to be the envy of the entire genealogy community on the internet.  The photos are also wonderful and appreciated.

Hi Joyce, I just received a book named "The Hortons in America" being a corrected reprint of the 1876 work by Dr. George F. Horton, compiled by Adaline Horton White in 1929. It has 586 pages of Horton genealogy from Barnabas of Southold, Long Island up to and including the 1st. World War. It includes most of the Hortons in Bradford Co. as well as all over the US. It also has a lot of history.I am a 10th great grandson of Barnabas Horton I am descended from Elijah who came from Peekskill to Sheshequin in 1794. I will do lookups from the book if anybody needs it. I will add all this genealogy to my family tree but it will take months of work. Thanks, Mike Krusen

Hello, Joyce, (July 2005)
I'll be glad to do lookups for the 132nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Civil War.  Volunteers were recruited from Bradford, Tioga and several neighboring Pennsylvania counties. I have researched the regiment and have a book — authored years after  the war by the regimental adjutant — which includes a complete roster of  soldiers who served in the 132nd by name, rank, home town and dates of service. I'll also include a short history of the regiment's service in the war when answering an inquiry.
Sincerely,
Tony Turner
