Silas RIPLEY Ancestors

The following Report has been prepared by Joyce M. Tice for Teri RIPLEY Kessler, Descendant of Silas RIPLEY and his second wife Ida HOAGLAND. This ancestor report is in Reverse order in the Henry Format. That is it goes backward generation by generation reflecting the information in the Sullivan-Rutland Genealogy Project database. This does not include the information that Teri sent me to update Silas and his descendants.

The following report on the Ripley / Hoagland family is provided to you online from Joyce M. Tice and her Sullivan-Rutland Genealogy Project. Before you use this, please read the explanation at the bottom of the page about what I expect in return. This is a two way street so please reward my efforts with your contributions of genealogical research.

This is formatted in Modified Henry Format from Ultimate Family Tree Software. If you do not understand Modified Henry Format, please consult any reliable genealogical reference book.

This work is part of an active and dynamic project and it will be outdated as soon as it is printed. Please refer any contacts that you encounter who are interested in this back to me so that I can ensure that they have the most recent version of the work. This portion of it is neither complete nor perfect. It is through exchange that its quality and scope can increase.

Epitaph on gravestone - In early youth my country called and I its voice obeyed. My body was by foes enthralled And now in earth I'm laid.

Gray Valley remains as the reminder of James Gray and his wife Parthenia White who settled it at a very early stage in the development of the area. 1897 Tioga County History: James was born in Sharon, Connecticut and resided a few years in Boston, Massachusetts. He and his wife and youngest children removed to Cooperstown, NY from Sharon, CT. In 1805 they came to Tioga County, Pennsylvania and located in what is now known as Gray's Valley, which was named in his (their) honor, where they bought 1,000 acres of land and paid cash for it. The place of their settlement is one of the prettiest and most fertile spots in Tioga County, and they were among the earliest of the pioneers of the township. Little of James'(and none of Parthenia's) early life is known of their descendants, except that he served seven years in the Continental army, and did his full share towards establishing a free government. He was discharged from the service with the rank of captain. In 1785 he married Parthenia WHITE of Norfolk, Connecticut. Mr. GRAY was originally a Federalist and afterwards a Whig. Historical Note: .

"In 1816 John Gray started a store in Gray's Valley hauling his goods by wagon from Philadelphia. This was the first store in Sullivan. Some time after this Timothy and Joseph Orvis started a store on King's Hill, some distance south of the State Road, and after that Alvin Ames opened one on Ames Hill. Mrs. Gray's store was a framed structure; the others were built of logs. In 1832 John Fox opened a store at mainesburg, the first at that point. He sold goods at that place for forty years."

Historical Note: . Mill History in Sullivan Township: "In 1819 John Gray erected a saw mill at Gray's Valley, on Elk Run. He operated until 1832. It had a number of owners. In 1838 Albert Dewey erected a saw-mill in the eastern part of the township, which he and George Dewey operated for a number of years. William Young, another early mill owner, built a mill about 1832 below Mainesburg on Corey Creek, near the Richmond township line. In 1844 Valorus O. Spencer erected a mill above Mainesburg. Other early mill owners and lumbermen were: Stephen Palmer, who ran a mill in the eastern part of the township; Peleg Doud, who erected one on the South fork of Corey creek, on what is now the George Ross farm, and Sylvester Bailey, who erected one in Bailey Hollow. All these mills were run by water power, the flutter wheel being the one generally used. They have passed out of existence, except the mill near the State Road, now operated by Edward Dewey.

John White Gray served as Justice of the Peace 1825 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. John succeeded John Marvin in this office. Jean Rumsey, Doud Ancestry, p. RD92-2 notes that no children are known, but that Kathleen Johnson believes Lester is possibly a child of John and Sally, and so she includes him on that possibility.

In the Census of 1850, James was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. James was a farmer with property worth $2000. Twelve year old Joseph Kendall was also in the household. Parthenia's ancestry is still undiscovered as of this writing. She is said to be of Norfolk, Connecticut. We will be very grateful when information on her family is revealed. Our early histories were abundant on the information they gave us on our male ancestors, and we are appreciative of that. Very frequently, however, they preserved much less about our female ancestors, and we feel the loss of that heritage sorely in this era.
