Eleanor WOOD & Eli GRAY Family of Sullivan Township
  1.  Eleanor1 Wood, daughter of Jonathan Wood+ and Hannah Whitlock+, (#1450) was born in Ridgefield, Fairfield County, Connecticut 12 NOV 1786.  Individual flags: Photograph.  Eleanor died 28 DEC 1865 in Vinton County, Ohio, at age 79.  Her body was interred DEC 1865 in Vinton County, Ohio.

 She married Eli Gray BY 1809 in Connecticut.  (Eli Gray is #1451.)  Eli was born 28 JUN 1787 in Connecticut.  Eli was the son of Justus Gray and Rachel Weed.  He married Sarah Fuller * After 1865 in Ohio.  Eli died 25 FEB 1868 in Ohio, at age 80.  Eli was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Eleanor and Eli had two females and one male under 10, and one female and one male 10-16 in their household in 1820.

 Eli registered to pay taxes 1829 in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Rutland Township was formed From Jackson and Sullivan in 1828. William Howland, William Rose and Ezra Wood performed the first tax assessment.

 Eli was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   The family in 1830 included Eli (40-50), Eleanor (40-50), two boys age under five and 10-15, and four girls - one under five, two 5-10, and one 10-15 (Rachel was 14/15).

 Eli registered to pay taxes 1832 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   20 improved acres, 50 wild acres, 2 cows, 2 horses, valuation $273, county tax $2.05, state tax .27.

 Eli registered to pay taxes 1834 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Twenty acres improved land, fifty acres wild land, two oxen, three cows, one horse.
 Eli registered to pay taxes 1835 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   15 acres improved land, 25 acres wild land, 2 cows, 1 mare.
 Eli registered to pay taxes 1837 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Fifteen improved, 25 wild acres, two cows, one mare.
 Eli registered to pay taxes 1838 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Twenty improved, 83 wild acres of land, one horse, two oxen, three cows.
 Eli registered to pay taxes 1839 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Removed and land transferred to Abel Watkins and Charles Rice.

 Eli was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Starr Township, Hocking County, Ohio.  Another Eli Gray born in New Jersey in 1820 in Rutland 1850 census residence 153. Epitaph Weep not for me, friends though death do us sever I am going to do nothing forever and ever. Eli Gray and Eleanor Wood brought their family to the head of Seneca Lake in New York in 1818 and then to Tioga county, Pennsylvania, near Eleanor's father, in 1820. Alberta McArthur claims that Eleanor and Eli had 4 daughters and 2 sons.

      Eleanor Wood and Eli Gray had the following children:

      2  i.  Justus2 Gray (#75488).
      3  ii.  Alford Gray (#18913) was born in Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut 14 JAN 1809.  Alford died 26 OCT 1891 in Hocking County, Ohio, at age 82.  He married Anna Pettibone 18 FEB 1830.  (Anna Pettibone is #18914.)  Anna was born 30 SEP 1807 in Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont.  Anna was the daughter of Ira Pettibone and Betsey Unknown (Pettibone).  Anna died 7 JAN 1894 in Hocking County, Ohio, at age 86.
    Alford was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Columbia Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  Alford registered to pay taxes 1834 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Four acres improved land
    Alford registered to pay taxes 1835 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   3 acres improved land., valuation $9.00.
    Alford registered to pay taxes 1837 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Three acres improved land.
    Alford registered to pay taxes 1838 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Three improved, two wild acres.
    Alford registered to pay taxes 1839 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Three acres improved, 12 acres wild land.
    Alford registered to pay taxes 1840 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Three improved, 12 wild acres of land.
    Alford was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Alford registered to pay taxes 1841 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Listed as Alfred Gray, five improved acres of land.
    Alford registered to pay taxes 1842 in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Eight improved, forty wild acres of land, two oxen, two cows.
    Alford registered to pay taxes 1842 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Listed as Alfred Gray, five improved acres of land. From History of Hocking Valley, Ohio, p. 1051: Alford GRAY, section 33 Starr Township, was born in Fairfield County, Connecticut, Jan. 14, 1809. His father, Eli GRAY, brought his family to the head of Seneca Lake in New York State in 1818, and to Tioga County, Pa. in 1820, and there settled in a wilderness. (This was part of a larger migration of Eleanor's WOOD and related families.) He was married Feb. 18, 1830 to Anna, daughter of Ira Pettibone. They have seven children...Mrs. Gray's father was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, and fought in the Battle of Bennington. Mrs. Gray was reared within twenty miles of that battle-ground.
      4  iii.  Rachel Mariah Gray (#5437) was born in Fairfield County, Connecticut 24 NOV 1815.  Rachel died 1 JUL 1867 in Hocking County, Ohio, at age 51.  Her body was interred JUL 1867 in Hocking County, Ohio.  She married John B. McArthur ABT 1832 in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  (John B. McArthur is #5436.)  John was born 12 JAN 1814 in Columbia Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.  John was the son of Allen D. McArthur and Eunice Benson.  He married Drusilla Unknown (Icenhower McArthur) 10 NOV 1867.  He married Lydia Michaels* ABT 1879.  John died 12 MAR 1905 at age 91.  John registered to pay taxes 1837 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.   Ten improved acres, thirty wild acres.
    John was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  one female, one male under five, one female 5-10 Alberta McArthur included research on the descendants of Rachel and John in her 1987 book, The McArthur, Benson, and Hathaway Generations, starting page 400M. She has kindly granted us permission to use her work in ours. The researcher was Michael Wolfe of Akron, Ohio.
      5  iv.  Amanda Gray (#70727) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 10 DEC 1829.  She married David Peugh*.  (David Peugh* is #75487.)

   Looking for the family of Eli GRAY [c.1786] & Elenor WOOD Gray [1786], daughter Amanda GRAY Peugh [1829 Penn.] (marr. to David PEUGH [1829] ).   In 1820 Eli is listed in Sullivan twsp., Tioga co, and in 1830 census lists as one boy less than 5yr, one boy 10 <15yr, and one male 40 < 50yr, that would be Eli for he was born c.1786 Conn.  One female less than 5yr that would be Amanda, she was born 10 Dec. 1829 in PA, two girls 5 < 10yr, one girl 10 < 15yr, and one female 40 < 50yr, that maybe Elenor, born 1886 Conn. They moved to Ohio before 1850. In 1850 Eli is a Plaster.  Justice J. KING born c.1840,  how is Justice King related ? lived with Eli and Elenor in 1850 & 1860. Eli's father is Justus Gray, Eli and Elenor had a son Justice Gray.     Any help is much appreciated, Thank you.
