Betsey FORD & Smith RUMSEY of Sullivan Township

1. Smith1 Rumsey, son of Isaac Rumsey and Abigail St.John, (#2210) was born in Rutland County, Vermont 4 APR 1773. Smith died 14 APR 1839 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 66. His body was interred APR 1839 in Rumsey-Doud Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

He married Betsey Ford * 1799. (Betsey Ford* is #5595.) Betsey was born 1781. Betsey died 27 MAR 1839 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 57. Her body was interred Mar 1839 in Rumsey-Doud Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Is she sister to Joseph Ford, Simeon Ford, etc.?

Smith registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the northern part of Ward which was formed in 1852.

Smith was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Smith was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Betsey and Smith were 40-50 and 50-60 in age. This was their last census as they both died within weeks of each other in 1839. Their hosehold included a male 20-30, a female 15-20 and a male 5-10.

Smith Rumsey and Betsey Ford* had the following children:

5 iv. Lucy Rumsey (#6518). Lucy died in as a child, at age unknown.

6 v. Electa Rumsey (#6511) was born in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont 1 JUN 1800. Electa died 9 JAN 1872 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 71. Her body was interred JAN 1872 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married Alvah Doud BEF 1825. (Alvah Doud is #6528.) Alvah was born 6 MAY 1796 in Rutland County, Vermont. Alvah was the son of ZinaDoud and Sally Hamlin*. Alvah died 20 MAY 1857 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 61. His body was interred MAY 1857 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Alvah was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Electa and Alvah were 30-40 with one girl and one boy 5-10 in the household, Aurilla and Lorenzo.

Alvah was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Electa and Alvah had one female and one male under five, two females 5-10, one female 10-15, one male 15-20 in their household.

In the Census of 1850, Alvah was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Alvah was a farmer with property worth $1500. Lorenzo also was a farmer.

Alvah had his will probated 17 JUN 1857 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Adm. Lorenzo Doud. Widow, Electa, renounced right to admin.

7 vi. Oliver Rumsey (#5000) was born in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont 21 JAN 1802. Oliver died 1 JUN 1882 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 80. His body was interred JUN 1882 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Ludington 14 JUL 1825. (Elizabeth Ludington is #4999.) Betsey was born 1807 in Vermont. Betsey was the daughter of William L. Ludington* and Ruth Ann Minor*. Betsey died 5 MAR 1885 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 77. Mansfield Advertiser 11th Mar 1885: Mrs Oliver Rumsey (nee Luddington) died Sullivan twp Mar 5th in 78th year, She married Jul 14th 1825 and had 8 children, 7 survive.

Her body was interred MAR 1885 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. 77 Y 1 M 22 D on tombstone. Obituary of William confirms Elizabeth as his daughter

Oliver was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth and Oliver were in the 20-30 age group with one male child under five, Cyrus. William was apparently born after the census.

Oliver was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Betsey and Oliver had one female and one male under five, one male 5-10, one female and two maled 10-15, in their household.

In the Census of 1850, Oliver was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Oliver was a farmer with property worth $700. William was a laborer.

In the Census of 1860, Oliver was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Oliver was a farmer with real property worth $1000 and personal property worth $400. John was a farm laborer. Olive and Jeanette were servants.

8 vii. Isaac St.John Rumsey (#6352) was born in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont 17 JAN 1804. Isaac died 8 APR 1865 in Mainesburg, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 61. His body was interred APR 1865 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married twice. He married Evalina Gray 07 OCT 1826 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Evalina Gray is #6353.) Evalina was born 16 FEB 1804 in Otsego County, New York. Evalina was the daughter of James A. Gray Sr. and Parthenia White. Evalina was divorced from Isaac St.John Rumsey 16 OCT 1838 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Thankful A. Calkins* 16 MAR 1840. (Thankful A. Calkins* is #6356.) Thankful was born 1819 in Pennsylvania. Grandmother may be Thankful Stevens (Calkins)#11274 . See page 247 of Vol. 1 of Pioneer and Patriot Fmilies of Bradford County. May be daughter of Jomaes Calkins#11306 and Huldah Dewey.

Isaac was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Evalina and Isaac had two daughters under five.

Isaac was divorced from Evalina Gray 16 OCT 1838 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Isaac was a shoemaker in Mainesburg, PA.

9 viii. Smith F. Rumsey (#6513) was born 6 AUG 1809. Smith died 30 APR 1842 at age 32. His body was interred MAY 1842 in Rumsey-Doud Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Ruth Danforth BEF 1840. (Ruth Danforth is #6529.) Ruth was born 1810-1820. Ruth was the daughter of Mr. ? Danforth and Lucinda Unknown (Danforth Newberry). In the 1840 census, Ruth and Smith were next door to Lydia ?? (Danforth Newberry) , birth name unknown, who also had a daughter Ruth. This helps us identify Ruth, wife of Smith as Ruth, daughter of Lucinda.

Smith was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Ruth and Smith had no children in their household at the time of the census.

10 ix. Betsy A. Rumsey (#6514) was born in Vermont 1810. Betsy died 23 MAY 1858 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 47. Her body was interred May 1858 in Ames Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married William Robbins By 1830. (William Robbins is #6530.) William was born 5 MAR 1805 in Cummington, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. William was the son of Amariah Robbins and Polly Richards*. William was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Probably newly married, Betey and William had no children at the time of this census.

William was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Betsey and William lived between his brothers Dexter and Joseph. Their household included two males and one female under 5, one male 5-10. Only two of the four children in the household are known to us by name since they were also in the 1850 census. The other two children must have died before 1850.

William was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

11 x. Emily Rumsey (#6515) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 17 AUG 1814. Emily died 4 SEP 1842 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 28. Her body was interred Sep 1842 in Rumsey-Doud Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married Dexter Robbins BY 1835. (Dexter Robbins is #6531.) Dexter was born 27 JUL 1809 in Cummington, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. Dexter was the son of Amariah Robbins and Polly Richards*. He married Mary Edgeton 1842. Dexter died 17 FEB 1880 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 70. Mansfield Advertiser 25th Feb 1880: Died Dexter Robbins, Sullivan twp age 70. Feb 17th. two daughters in Minnesota.

His body was interred FEB 1880 in Ames Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Dexter was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Dexter and Emily lived next to his parents. Their household included two males under 5, one male 5-10.

In the Census of 1850, Dexter was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Dexter was a farmer with property worth $1000.

12 xi. Levi M. Rumsey (#6519) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 22 NOV 1821. Levi died 2 MAY 1875 at age 53. His body was interred MAY 1875 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Sophia Williams*. (Sophia Williams* is #6534.) Sophia was born 14 MAR 1819 in Corning, Steuben County, New York.

Levi was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Levi lived alone in 1840 next door to Susannah CUDWORTH Rumsey and also next to Francis GITCHELL.

In the Census of 1860, Levi was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Levi was a carpenter with real property worth $500 and personal property worth $150.

13 xii. Mary Rumsey (#6763) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 19 DEC 1822. Mary died 23 JUL 1894 in Robbins Hill, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 71. Her body was interred JUL 1894 in Ames Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
